Great video! I will definitely have a reputable shop do the work when I go from 3.73's to 4.88's. Also, thank you for not using some country cottage guitar music in your video like every other Jeep video seems to.
@@Winch_Offroad your jeep has an E locker.?. didnt get mentioned. the higher you go in ratio, the weaker the pinion. so best to upgrade diffs. d44 d60 ect.
Very cool ive been planning to save up for awhile now to do rebuild with E lockers and 4.88 gears its definetly worth it to do it all at the same time rather than rebuild it down the road, i replaced the tracloc gears in the dana35 a few years ago and thought "next time is the last time".
Change your speedo gear . They literally cost a few bucks. If you have NO speedo gear , then by a universal speedo recalibration unit from 12 o'clock labs ( 80 bucks ) . And wire it into your harness. Both options are crazy simple.
You can change the gear ratio in your flash tool as well to keep your speedometer on without messing with tire size. You want the tire size to be accurate to make sure your mileage is reading correctly. So if you have 35s that measure to 34 1/2 you wanna have it set to that and set your gear ratio in the flash to 4.88
For the 2.5 crowd with manual trans.. that motor doesn't come alive untill 3000rpm and is good up to 4500rpm.. so 4:88 on a ax5 or ax15..2.5 l will run 2800rpm with true 35s...and will be able to hit 80 mph
They put a lot of work into those to run the highway at 80+ mph on break in (Especially 4.88, it's harder on the pinion (spins faster) the higher numerically you go) .....Just sayin.... you'll prolly be fine but the gears we're prolly sayin' "REALLY!?, this is how its gonna go?....I'll TRY to hang in there!"
YJs ran from 1986-1995 i believe...Check to see, but you should have dana 30 front and dana 35 rear and if that is the case you should be able to do 4.88s. I know you can in a 94 YJ... I hope that helped.
@@Winch_Offroad Thank you, yes, I have a 1995 with 4.10 gears. I put newer rims from a 2015 Jeep and 33’s. Going up a hill at highway speed is a challenge and a small trailer with very little weight kills the engine if you shift from 3rd to 4th. Great video.
I was told that 4.88 with 35s will kill your tip end speed. I live in California where everyone does 80mph on the freeway. Would a 2017 jeep JK sport be able to cruise at 80mph with 4.88 on 35s?
Yes...I have a 2011 and live in Wyoming at about 5,600 feet elevation and do 80mph with no problems. Your 2017 has a better engine than my 2011. Now i do have a Flash Paq for my Jeep. I run at about 2,300 rpms and the auto transmission shifts at like 3,300 rpms.
Mine is auto, and I went 4.88 for two reasons, I drive my Jeep a lot, I mean A LOT...and second I was going to stay with 35's. I wish I went 5.13 because my Jeep is heavy. I want to do a video on the weight and why it's important.
@@richardticer I want to do 5.38 on 35”. I used to ride motorcycles and always loved taking off from pulls so I’m wondering if I’ll get the same feeling!?
I been thinking for a long time and been undecided if to go 4.88 or 5.13.. I have a 14’ jku with 3.5” lift n 35s... Is my daily driver.. will u recommend 4.88 like u did or u think 5.13 will be the way?
My 2021 6MT Willys Sport (all stock) has a noticeable 3rd gear ~ 2800-3000 RPM clutch slip or hiccup/hesitation feeling. Does 4.88 gear eliminate that hesitation/hiccup blip? I’m prob getting 35” tires & 2” lift, mild forest roads off roading. Thanks for your input.
I'm new the jeep community but I was planning on buying a JL with MT and a 4.88 gear ratio because I plan on switching to 35 as soon as I get it or should I stay with the 4.10 gear axel ratio?
It's about 800 in labor only per axle. The mechanic will thank u if u replace all the parts except the housing.. not cuz ur buying his parts but because he isn't pressing bearings off..then putting em on ect.. replace it all..like the guy said before ..it's around 3k for parts and labor..
Yes for 35s.....I run about 2200 rpms I just replaced my manifolds and spark plugs. I Have yet to get it out on the highway. I will check tomorrow for you.
Thanks! Pretty similar driving conditions? So you lost 1 MPG? I’m trying to figure out what to do with mine. I’ve got 35s like you. Would love for the Jeep to do better on the big mountains on the highway but don’t want to lose a bunch of fuel economy.
I drive my jeep 3.8 2011 jku about 6 miles a day in Cheyenne at 5600 feet elevation. I do use the Flash Paq chip and have 35s. I try to use 87 or 91 octane gas and get just under 16 mpg around town. Interstate I can go 75 mph with no problems and at 2200 rpms
2013 Jeep Jk 35in tires installed 4.88 gears, it’s been about two weeks and I’m at 2900rpms at 70mph is this normal? I can accelerate much better now and I can climb up highways without feeling like a slug now, but the Rpms? Seems high no?
2013 has updated motor and trans from Jacked 2 jeeps setup which is the 3.8 motor. The 3.6 motor in your jeep doesn't need as much gear. A 4.88 gear set with a 3.6 and 35's which are probably 34.25" (new) will be about 2800 rpms. (Measure on the jeep, ground to axle, multiplied by 2) if RPM's are really 2900, you might have really worn tires or a slipping torque convertor. At any rate, 4.88 is too much gear for 35s on that motor unless your build is mainly off road and no freeway driving. think about getting much larger tires or get those gears dropped down to 4.10. at the most 4.56. Very surprised the shop that installed those didn't bring that up? they should know better.
I'd say from watching this that if you want this job done right, then leave it to the professionals-and these guys looked very professional. nice
