I store my green propane bottles in a small igloo cooler in my vehicle. I checked it out. 101degrees F. Outside. Inside the cooler in the truck 85 degrees inside the cooler. It also keeps them upright.
Great video, I have a few backpacking stoves that I use with propane instead of butane, The ones that have a hose instead of screwing the stove on top of the bottle can be a problem if you do not keep the 1 lb cylinder upright, Liquid propane can enter the lines and cause your stove to spit and sputter instead of burning cleanly...When using propane on a butane stove make sure that your propane tank stands upright so as to avoid this problem. It is also advisable to keep your flame as low as possible when using propane, otherwise the higher pressure will begin to freeze up at the burner orifice.
I just had two of these show up from Amazon and cannot wait to put them to use. I have a family that is in one of my touring vehicles that are having trouble finding isobutane canisters, but have lots of access to propane bottles. I’m gonna get one to them and keep one for myself.
I have two of these. They pay for themselves almost immediately and from there on in it's all savings. Combine them with a refiller nozzle for your 20 lb propane tank to keep your one lb bottles full much more cheaply. Highly recommend especially for camper RV life. The 25 dollar Coleman Peak and the 10 dollar GasOne stoves, any other too, all work just fine on this setup. Buy these.
only thing about using the big canisters is the worry of tipping it over...I think coleman has a plate type thing that goes on the bottom of the canister to help
As a climber, I dismissed butane altogether for years and then just recently gave it try - which verified that I was 100% correct to have ignored it. However, that experience led to my "discovering" propane. Now THAT makes sense; the green bottles are not criminally heavy and propane boils at -40F so it's still got decent PSID at single digits. I use an MSR LOWDOWN with a Rocket; that thing rocks like an acetylene torch. It's also possible to put the bottle in an Outdoor Research 1L bottle parka for some warmth/padding. The Whisperlite is still my choice for survival-critical situations but otherwise, LPG is my new friend.
Great overview. Never knew they made lanterns for the canisters! Now all you need to do is buy the adaptors to refill these tanks and really save you money. As long as you weigh them and are carefully it can be done very safely. Thanks!
The burner on the Coleman Peak-1 is designed to produce a "diffused flame pattern" for even cooking/simmering, as opposed to the "concentrated flame pattern" of the MSR "pocket rocket" style burners that are geared toward boiling water.
Exactly! Besides I'm not going to make a big meal in the camping, I'm just going to heat up, not cook, for that I'd better stay at home and make a big stew.😋
I just purchased this little guy just for this purpose because I was running out of isobutane but had the propane tank. Then I got the propane refill adapter when it runs out.

Yeah. I'm unimpressed by the cost of the little cans, too. But there's options for refilling them, either from other isobutane camp stove canisters or from butane canisters, and the item in this video seems like it ought to be a good addition to the other tools for refilling them with a good butane/propane mix for all weather use.
It will work with that little mantle-less gas lantern/candle thing you tested in a previous video which is awesome. Burns a very very long time on a pound of propane!
I heard using hot hands and wrapping around propane tanks in extreme cold keeps it from freezing. But I never did any survival or camping so maybe I'm wrong
On the Peak One, the hissing noise is intsant when i open the valve with the short canisters. The tall one, wide open and nothing. I lit it anyway and had a small flame. It seemed like it had to prime or something. I thought i had empty canisters. At 65°, it just seemed odd.
Trangia has a propane fire that you can put in fire box stove. You can cook dang near any thing in there. I'm going to use reusable 5 lb propane tank compair to throw away 1 lb tanks. Good video.

Thanks for sharing, you scared with the lantern (I JUST bought one that says it works with either IsoButane or propane.) I noticed the adapter for propane comes with instructions that mentions increasing or decreasing pressure through it by turning a set screw (most of the little butane/propane adapters seem to have an adjustment screw on one side or the other.) Maybe this helps.
I’ve seen vids showing refueling the 1 pound propane tanks from the 20 pound tanks which are even cheaper to refuel, so this means 20 pound propane tank to refuel the 1 pound, then use adapter from 1 pound tank to isobutane stove, so can now run isobutane stove for the price of 20 pound bbq gas station refill propane? 🤓 There is also an adapter to refuel the small (backpacking size) isobutane canisters from the butane stove canisters at 1/10th the cost of isobutane canisters and the butane canisters are available everywhere even in supermarkets
You can get the Coleman type butane/isobutane canisters, containing 445 grams, which is as near as makes no odds, 1lb. They're also a lot lighter than the 1lb Propane tanks, 1.32lbs, compared to 2.3lbs for the 1lb Propane tank.
Excellent product review. I put the camp stove adapter in my Amazon Cart and will purchased it as soon as I find a good price on something else I'm looking for. Thanks!
Have you seen any freeze up issues when using propane. I used the same adapter on foldable Lixada camping stove and the line that runs from the canister to the stove kept freezing up when using propane. The stove would stop working until I thawed out the line. For any prolonged cooking the propane canister was effectively useless because of that.
is there an adapter that does the opposite? there is a stove that has the metal straight pipe for propane and I want to run it on the butane cans, struggling to find an adapter for it :( TIA
So I cheated and just finished shooting the video for the boil test lol, I will do my other video tomorrow. Video should be posted in a bit. You got me curious so I had to test it out.

Any caps available, so I can use the bottles more than once? Any help is appreciated.
They’re meant to take on backpacking trips. Propane doesn’t come in small, lightweight canisters. Those big 1lb cans are the smallest you can get, and they take up a lot of space and weight in a backpack. On a 300 mile trek, every ounce counts

This adapter is essential! Those iso cans can be hard to find in smaller towns where the 1lb LP or map gas cans are readily available
This 100% answered my question. Figured this would work for stoves, but wasn’t sure about the lantern. Thank you!
I buried my canisters half way into the ground to protect from freezing and stability so my soucepan does not fall off.
To test it put the bottle in the freezer. 4 season butane mix still works after being in freezer over night.
That lp adapter comes with the Stryker 200 stove from Walmart in case you’re looking into buying a jet boil copy anyway

My math says at the spec'd 6g/h rate the little gas candle should run nearly 12 days straight (285 hours) on 1# of propane.
@@DougKremer is that 6g/hr rate running it at max flame/open all the way?
@@DougKremer also, a pound is 454 grams, so 6g/hr would be more like 75hours (but still pretty impressive , over three days non stop!).
Don’t know, it’s the rate mentioned.
