My problem is getting even a technical interview. I've only had two interviews, but no offer, I'm straight out of a bootcamp. I solved their problems quickly and I think I did well. I'm solving leet code hard problems quickly. Any tips? How do I get an interview. I have a major in math and business. Trying to get an entry level position.
I just want to get into front end web dev, maybe software development. I've just finished the front end track on team treehouse. Do I honestly just make a portfolio of my projects and network with the right people? Like what do I specifically learn that I can say I can apply to jobs? Do I just dig into a language just learn a bunch of random things about it to gain familiarity or is there a certain route I need to be going on all of this. I'm ready to take on whatever needs to be thrown at me. If you can help that would be amazing, thanks.
Companies scoff at people who do boot camps, I've talked directly with the interviewers about this. lve managed to land an offer but I made up that I had software engineering experience in another country. I'm not sure about front end, but I'd expect they ask bunch of javascript html css questions and maybe some algorithms using javascript.
@@turkyturky6274 Thanks for your reply. So you are saying essentially employers don't exactly trust someone who went through a brief bootcamp but rather someone who's been self-teaching for say 6 months to a year, working on projects, attending hackathons, contributing to open source projects through Git, and other networking with professionals, or other relative experience?
Well that puts you in a better position. Understand that, you are competing with cs grads and I'm sure they get priority over boot camp grads. I'm talking about this field as a whole. I have a university degree but it's in mathematics, I'd imagine no degree at all would be extremely difficult to land a interview. I did interview at google but they asked some tough algorithm questions that I needed more practice on. Essentially, you want to stand out, don't waste your time with Indian recruiters. I want to tell you that jobs in cs might be plenty but there are millions of people that are average programmers and competing with you for limited positions. Yo Joma! Do you have any tips for a Canadian trying to get a job as a software engineer in the United States? I'm born and raised Canadian citizen in 2nd year of software engineering at carleton university. As a Canadian would you apply for a green card to work in the US or just stay on Visa? I've completed 2 coop jobs so far but the companies that come to my school are mainly Canadian based.
Is it correct to assume that his interviews were relatively harder (leetcode medium-hard, 5 algo rounds) because he was applying for a high level position? As opposed to an entry level engineer
Software engineering is very liberal with that compared to other fields like more traditional engineering and business. The reason being is that you can easily distinguish yourself in extracurricular activities and projects. That being said, there are obviously still benefits going to super big-name CS/CE schools like Stanford, CMU, etc. but it's just not as extreme as other fields where you can literally get rejected off of not being on their list of recruitment schools. For reference I know a person who now works for Google that came from a small liberal arts college and another person working at Amazon from just a typical state university.
I'm always wondering when we use another offer to bargain, do we need to attach that offer in the email? Or how are they going to know that what you said is real? Versus just made the numbers up.
