Software driven solution would be the simplest solution for manufactures; 2020 Ford products starting with the Lincoln Aviator will have a pin system, for example, as an extension of their door keypad system. Federal legislation ultimately is the best driver for change and pressure placed on these governing bodies by special interest groups, typically consumer rights groups, is what is needed to make these changes become realty. So looks like it’s up to you in the UK What Car...

Why not change the unlock code every few seconds? You'd have to add more memory and processing power to the fob and the car, but the cost should be on par with the cost of USB memory sticks -- not much. And yes, fellow programmers, the codes will repeat after a while. Stop typing and run the numbers. It only takes a few gigabytes of memory and a cheap CPU to provide a cycle time of months or even years. Keyless entry keys emit a coded radio signal. The car picks up the signal and if it’s the right signal, it knows you are the owner. You can devices that can pickup that signal from your keys and copies and sends out the same signal. The car thinks it’s your car keys but it’s the device. It’s a sorry state that something designed to improve convenience becomes another back door to theft. It’s also amazing that the tech needed to steal the codes is available to buy online! I have had keyless entry and go on my last 3 cars (paid for options) and found it to be worth every penny. None of the cars were stolen btw. However, cars are becoming increasingly connected as part of the internet of things. If something as fundamental as physical security has not been fully considered by the manufacturers, what hope do we have when it comes to remote access and autonomous control of cars that are always connected?
