It's this SHOCKINGLY Easy to Steal a Car!? Bye Bye My Focus RS

  • Prepare to be shocked by just how easily your pride and joy can be stolen by a relay attack! Car theft numbers are rising fast, and with my Focus RS parked on the driveway, we see a live demonstration of just how quickly a criminal can steal the car and drive it away. Scary isn't it?!
There are now millions of cars being stolen per year via relay attacks whereby criminals get their hands on devices that can read and repeat the signal from your car's fob to enable keyless access. The key itself can be hundreds of metres away from the car, yet by this method the car can be instantly unlocked, started up, and driven off, and this is quite clearly a major problem.
To demonstrate, we are joined by Henk van Vliet from KIWA SCM, the certification institute in the Netherlands, who are leading the charge against these kind of vehicle thefts. With demonstration equipment for the purpose you can immediate see how this is done, a process that affects everything from Ford Focuses and Fiestas, and VW Golfs, through your Mercedes AMGs, BMW Ms, Audi RS' and Range Rovers all the way up even to supercars if they feature keyless access fobs that don't have a prevention method to relay attacks.
This is where Keyless Protector step in, offering products that will safe guard your keys through different techniques to prevent the car from being stolen so easily. With the system installed to the keys of the Audi SQ5 and then also to my Focus RS, we can see first hand the difference that it makes in preventing this attack.
You can find out more about the Keyless Protector systems here keylessprotect... and should you wish to acquire one, you can find your local dealer here: keylessprotect...
    Thanks for watching, Tim

You can get Faraday Pouches for under £10 which do the same thing pretty much as long as they're properly shut. But this is much more convenient than having to get your key in and out of a pouch everytime. But it genuinely works standing next to the car

Also could simply use an algorithm that once the car is locked, only an unlock command from a preprogrammed fob will let the car wake up. The OBD port should be dead anytime the car is locked with the fob. Its amazing that security from the 90s has been eliminated in the name of "convenience".

Surprised it's taken you this long to do a video about this Tim, it's been a problem for at least four years. Also, even cars like the ST which don't have keyless are susceptible due to an essential part of the car's electronics running code from 2005. The modules were reverse-engineered by Eastern European criminals; OBD dongles are now availale which can easily disable the (Thatcham-accredited) Ford alarm via CANBUS, then put the security system into key learning mode to clone a new key. Exactly how mine was stolen, took about 60 seconds from popping the window to driving away. Many owners now have Ghosts fitted to suppress CANBUS attack. Also quite surprised you didn't recommend people buy a Disklok!
Layered security is what we need now - make it too much of a hassle to steal a car, they'll go after someone else's. Sad state of affairs. The Keyless Protector is a clever invention, I remember being impressed by it when it launched, but wow it's expensive. Any chance you could do a promo with them for some money off?

Very educational video! One of the flaws in preventing car theft are keyless fobs criminals can use a device to receive information from the fob itself to gain access to the car. This is why I prefer conventional keys over keyless fobs because they are simple and secure. Now that we watched the video, there is a solution to the weak problem that is a protector for keyless fobs so information from the keyfob cannot be picked up.

    Robust solution buuuut,
    The time should be configurable...
3 minutes is enough for you to get inside your home and for a stalking thief to gain access, the user should be able to configure the time after which the key goes to sleep...
or make the user have the ability to make the key go to sleep quickly...

So... What happens with the Focus if, for instance, you had parked up in a car park for the afternoon, and walked away having locked the carr?
The key is in your pocket and is still moving when you walk off. Thus it's still sending out it's "normal" signal. Meaning that anyone with the right equipment is still able to "collect" the keys signal and then just jump into the car and drive away when you've gone?
The one for the Audi stops that happening with the double tap system.

I don't understand why they don't do this from the car manufacturers. A go to sleep, idle mode where it stops emitting when car is turned off and locked so the key goes to sleep. Then to wake it up you have to press unlock once to wake it up and unlock again to unlock the car. Would solve that potential threat.

Better to simply turn off keyless entry option on your Focus RS Red Edition. The new Focus key transmits in motion so that's no good as you might be followed out of the car and it be copied while your eying up your next ready meal. The Audi is much better as it will only transmit when tapped twice. But tell us do you have to then tap twice again to start the car or do you have say a 20 second window etc to load the trunk and start the car before you must tap it twice again. You could end up with a few bruises before too long, much better to turn off keyless entry as this systems.

Ford have stepped up to the game and now provide motion detecting keys as standard with Focus and Fiesta. Other models coming soon. The keys operate slightly differently to the system above in that it is only the keyless entry function that sleeps. With the aftermarket method shown in this video you may end up not being able to start your car if you sit inside for more than 3 minutes with your key stationary.
