Such an underrated hoya in my opinion. In a world of huge, veiny, silver, variegated, etc. leaves, regular Mathilde always stands out as an absolute, easy-going beauty.
My mathilde demands nearly nothing of me and she gives so much. I bought mine for $10 at a plant fest last year in September. She has since tripled in size with minimal effort.
What a gorgeous bloom!😍 I don’t chase blooms, but they are like a little cherry on top of all of the lovely foliage.😄 Truly a 12/10 plant.
    Thanks for the video!🙏🏽

Mathilde is one that I obsessed over till I was able to buy a couple of cuttings. A few months later, I was at a local nursery, and they were selling a 6" pot with a ton of splash for $30. SOLD. A cautionary note for cat owners: those lighter-than-air vines can look like a good time to cats. I recently had two vines trimmed back by a feline friend. (Using the word "friend" loosely in this instance, obviously.)

She's gorgeous! I love my Mathildes (regular and splash)! I have 3 Serpens and they love more humid conditions. I just killed my H. Serpens splash (or something) cutting. I didn't pay much for it, thankfully (under $10). There's a really great Hoya group I belong to, here in MN. So, I'm sure I can try again soon. Most of my Hoyas are from cuttings - I love watching them grow. New growth is my jam!
Have you seen the H. Mathilde variegated? I can't wait till she's more affordable. One of our group members just sold 1-node cuttings for $100 a pop! That's too much of a gamble for me. I will wait. 😎

I totally agree, the taco test is not a good idea - take it from a chronic under waterer & never feeder. Now that I am watering/feeding much quicker, but sometimes not quick enough for 'perfect' conditions, my plants have responded so beautifully! Plants that I thought were supposed to be a dusky green are now a deep rich green and vibrant. I have been truly amazed.

I just repotted a beautiful new to me Mathilde with 12 inch vines. You need two people to do this. Have one person raise the vines while the other person wraps the pot with paper bag torn into wide strips or in my case plastic wide enough to hold the vines. Then move it up from the pot to cover the plant. This holds the vines out of the way while you get to work on the roots and repot.

I've been looking at getting a Mathilde for a while now. And no need to be serious if you are having fun getting these videos out.
I also remember having a conversation with a former colleague about charging $250 for a full sized knitted afghan. Was told very bluntly that I was gouging people. Until I broke down the price of the yarn x3 and the time taken to actually knit the damn thing x$10/h as an example of what I should be charging. That shut him up pretty quick.

I agree with your assessment of 'Mathilde'. Mine flowered within a year and grew exponentially when given the right conditions. I have propagated her several times and have made large planters just to see if I could. This Hoya is as perfect a plant as it could be, especially for beginner plant parents.

When I have a stuck plant like this, I pull it out of the pot, inspect the roots, and freshen it up. Sometimes it needs a smaller pot, larger, or the same with a different (oftentimes looser) substrate. The other technique I use commonly is to simply snip a vine to activate the growth hormone. That's just me, but I've done it many, many times. Cheers to you in this new year!

I kept rotting the roots. And I wish I could tell you what I did differently, but it wasn't really anything. It has been slow, though, even after the recovery. If you can't see the roots, and it'd be easy to pop them out, I'd take a look just to be sure. If everything is good, I wouldn't worry about it until Spring.

I do think restarting is the way I'd go ("think" ... I'm absolutely certain 🤣). Roots can rot so quickly under those circumstances. Best of luck. Gorgeous plant.

Serpens is a b*tch 😖 Extremely frustrating. But Mathilde is a dear and so is Carnosa :) My Mathilde is about to open her first 3 flower clusters any time now. I am sooo excited :)
Edit: I sooo agree with you about stressing out plants. I don't do it, I don't like it. I'd much rather wait for happy blooms than instantly get stress blooms.

I have some cuttings of serpens rooting in the grow tent. Looking good, for now...! The scent on 'Mathilde' is so lovely. I hope that it gets stronger as she flowers more. Enjoy yours!

I bought 10 hoya seeds. 1 sprouted and quickly withered and died the rest didn't even come up. I tried using a seed tray. Maybe too high of humidity? Not enough ventilation? I have 15 more to try. I'm a lil scared.

Whoever thinks that hoyas should be $5-$10 only when its well rooted and grown is insane or too cheap to buy it...just keep your money ...im a gardener and i know how much time, money, effort, water , light, fertilizer, and pest control or prevention we gardeners or plant ppl spend with our plants ... We also know the smaller the seedling, the less stable or rooted it is so its cheaper to buy it in that 2 inch size pot...of course the bigger and more established a plant is, the more it cost as its been a longer period its been grown or cared for ...time is money....some very cheap or frugal ppl should try to propagate and care for these plants from cuttings or seeds and see after 1 to 2 yrs growth if ever they are successful and get a healthy plant growing will they consider selling or parting from it for $5-10 😂😂😂 thats ridiculous!!!

    • @soberplantguy

I think the question was earnest. My guess is that *most* people don't know how much effort it takes to grow a lot of plants well. Expectations upon delivery are high (and I'm no different there). Cheers, fellow gardener

I follow a lot of US Hoya people here at UA-cam and also have looked at a couple of websites (Etsy etc.) and I must say that I feel that many Hoyas is very expensive in US.
I compare that with the situation here in Sweden. Maybe we don't value our precious Hoyas like you guys do 🤷‍♂️.
What are your thoughts about that?
You mentioned NGG in the video, and I am curious what the price of a wellrooted and established plant would be if you would sell it.

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  3 місяці тому

@@MichaelHaeffner Etsy takes 20% commission off the top, then there's 24% tax, and then there are the transactions fees. So, it's an expensive proposition to sell that way, and sellers have to price them high. I don't sell there for that very reason. I sold 4" very full pots, with multiple plants, of NGG all summer for $34-45.
