Looks amazing. I learned how to make this from an old Polish lady I used to take care of. I used to go to her home 3 times a week to care for her and her husband. She could barely walk anymore , but this woman would still cook everyday. So glad that I got to be there for her and to learn her amazing Polish recipe's 😋
My neighbor is Slovakia & she invited us round for lunch Omg she made this for us, it’s a meal in itself it was absolutely beautiful, I would have liked more but we had a main course of fried chicken & pork schnitzel with rice & cucumber salad with sour cream amazing food yummy 😋
I had a good friend who made this every year for decades. He's passed on but shared this recipe with a grandson whom I had to beg for it. Your video really helps me as I only do this soup at Christmas to remember him and the many folks who would share it on the special day. I have a big kettle on the stove now with the wonderful aroma filling the house and yard. It smells Great. Thank you!
We're Slovak, mom used to make a huge pot every Christmas. For meat she put in both fresh and smoked Kolbasa (that my dad made) and a pork loin roast, barley and also reconstituted dried black truffles (until they began to get so expensive back in the 70's). Since mom died in 2005 haven't had it since she last made it. So very much miss her, her great culinary skills...and especially that fantastic soup. Thanks so much for the memories...and I'm gonna try and duplicate our traditional sauerkraut soup...your recipe has helped tremendously...!
You did a good job of making this soup and making this video. I’m making this soup on Christmas Eve and I’m amazed at all the different techniques for making the same soup. This is a great way of making the soup. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
This looks so yummy! We use potatoes and white northern beans instead of meat. Some of us add a little vinegar in the soup at the dinner table. Love Christmas Eve soup!
Making it this year for Christmas Eve... sounds perfect ..... And ordered the right sausage the the Vegeta too... thank you so much.. Always learning... !
Thanks for sharing this recipe! Such a shame that Americans don't really use sauerkraut because I feel like they don't like it, but when you know how to combine it with other ingredients it's so good!! I cant wait to make it for my friends this Xmas! Also eat it second day, tastes even better!!
I completely forgot about bay leaves :) I usually throw 2 in with the cabbage. We used to add cubed potatoes too but after a while we just do pasta. When adding potatoes I cook them separately and then add them to soup when done. Potatoes cook funny in acidic liquid like sauerkraut soup. They are soft inside but hard on the outside :) Thanks for watching and commenting Monika :)
I have been scouring the internet for traditional sauerkraut soup recipes to honor my Slovak heritage. I have seen several versions with prunes in them, which sounds amazing... Does anyone know if I could add prunes to a version as straight forward as this one? If so, how would I do it? Also, does anyone add white wine to theirs?
Hi, you can add anything you want. My mom would throw 1-2 prunes in our sauerkraut soup too but I am not buyign a whole bag of them just to add 1 in the soup. It adds tiny bit of a sweetness to the soup. It's more done for tradition than for any taste. Just don't add too much, that would make soup sweeter. We would actually add some prunes to goulash soup too. no idea where that comes from. Many people add random things in, i never tried wine but splash f it won't hurt anything.
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I used it as a base to make my own. Sauerkraut is one of my favorites :) My kielbasa unfortunately ended up tasting very bland after simmering for a few hours because it gave all its juices to the broth. Does that happen to you too, or is it maybe due to the quality of the meat?
It took me a while to figure out what is Bobkove Listy called in English! I had to literally go to the spice rack and look at the pictures on those small bottles until I found it. lol
a little different then mine but i would like to try it .We do not eat meat on Christmas Eve also we dont use pasta we boil potatoes in one inch cubes then brown them in butter with onions and serve the soup over them.
oh wow, never heard of making potatoes for the soup that way. As I said, so many different traditions :) We used to boil some cubed potatoes separately and then add it to soup once cooked. but then we switched to easier way and we've been using pasta for many years (homemade grandma's pasta but I was too lazy to make my own this year). Give it a try, you will love this version with smoked sausages :)
It does. Not all of them, but the raw sauerkraut is full of them. Also the sauerkraut juice, it's a vitamin C bomb - but, it makes your bowels move veery fast :)
Skoda ze to nieje po slovensky kedze sme obaja slovaci a ja anglicky neviem .. Chcela by som sa opytat na recept po slovensky ak sa da .. Dakujem pekne :)
Lol you go to Slovakia and tell them Slovak food is in-between German and Russian food. 😄 Very touchy subject. TRUST ME. I asked my grandfather jokingly, have to embraced your inner Rusin? He would give me this dirty looks. And Rusin are a group of people in Slovakia.
+Ama Haas sorry, just seeing your question. It is called Vegeta, very vommon food additive in Slovakia, Czech republic, Hungary. It is made of dried root vegetables like carrots, parsnip, celery root and few others, blended and mixed with salt. It is mostly salt with those veggies :) similar thing in USA would be Mrs Dash but I haven't tried to use that yet. Vegeta can be found in many american stores now, in international Isle. or in any Polish store.
With all due respect, never ever add Vegeta to your food. It's a pure MSG. I like the fact that you use Hungarian kolbas, because Polish kielbasa just won't do the justice. I cut up kolbas, saute it in a hot pot, add pealed cut up potatoes, add German (with white wine) saurkraut, all untill kolbas releases fat and flavor. Add water (2" over the ingredients) add soaked, rinsed porcini mushrooms and cook (simmer) for good 2hrs. No rue, potatoes will take care of it and since they were FIRST sauteed they should NOT dissolve during cooking. Again absolutely no MSG "Vegeta" you won't need it if you have good smoked old fashioned sausage / kolbas
mahwah azet Please note that the MSG American conspiracy has been long debunked! MSG is a naturally occuring ingredient just synthesized for economies of scale. Its "bad boy" reputation was the wrong long held belief that it had negative health consequences (American lobby). MSG is naturally ocurring flavor enhancer...keep using it for umami effect! your food will just taste better! Vegeta is a just a superior flavor enhancer containing lots of sun soaked eastern european grown vegetables and roots with an incomparable flavor adding punch.

My Polish Grandfather made us all sauerkraut soup every Christmas eve.
My mom was born in Dubova. She made the soup with sour kraut juice
My grandpa was from Dubova, and my grandma from Casta
Yes with the juice
Veľmi dobrý recept, I love it
Máš super výslovnosť Otilia. Vacsinou sa extrémne hanbím keď počujem slovakov anglictinovat haha
Our family used only the sauerkraut juice with a flour roux, half and half, mushrooms and spaetzle
In our family we make cabbage soup for New Year's Eve.👍
Teşekkürler daha fazla Slovakya tarifi yüklermisiniz ve slovakya kiliseleri teşekkür ederim mutlu günler ❤
Muka do kapustnice, to ne😁😂😂
I also use the bay leaf and caraway seeds. And potatoes. :)

Could I use dried Shitake Mushrooms instead?
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I used it as a base to make my own. U nás sa síce robí inak, ale aj vaša je určite výborná. Ponúkli by ste za tanier? :) Mňam, dávam like.
Can you use fresh mushrooms instead of dried?
My mom would add rice instead of pasta. But thanks for the video.
It took me a while to figure out what is Bobkove Listy called in English! I had to literally go to the spice rack and look at the pictures on those small bottles until I found it. lol
Mike Dusik what you mean bayleaf
see you should ask and in 10 month's you would get your answer
where did you bought the mushroom? and what is the name of the mushroom in English?
Porcini mushrooms and I throw mine in a dehydrator for a couple of hours. Sliced preferably.
a little different then mine but i would like to try it .We do not eat meat on Christmas Eve also we dont use pasta we boil potatoes in one inch cubes then brown them in butter with onions and serve the soup over them.

Doesn’t bringing the sauerkraut to a boil, kill the good bacteria?

But If You do originaly, it is typical Slovak soup...with hungarian sausagge😉
Lol you go to Slovakia and tell them Slovak food is in-between German and Russian food. 😄 Very touchy subject. TRUST ME. I asked my grandfather jokingly, have to embraced your inner Rusin? He would give me this dirty looks. And Rusin are a group of people in Slovakia.
Polovičku surovín tam chiba.
What was the yellow looking spice she put in the roux?
