I just want to share that one of the white Russian refugees was my great grandfather whose name is Alexander ivanoff who settled in Zamboanga City together with his mother Parakovia ivanoff and some of his friends. He was one of the white Russian soldiers who fled Russia during that time. Am proud to be a Filipino and at the same time a Russian in blood.

We may be portrayed by some as a country of cockroaches, slum areas, poor, governed by corrupt officials, traffic jams and other worst images but one thing for sure, I am proud to be a Filipino whose bravery, patriotism, resilience, hardwork, love of family and hospitality have been proven and tested many times in history even at present! We may have encountered many disasters and challenges in life but we can still afford to smile and laugh at them. We may be considered among the poorest but we cannot deny food and drinks to any visitor especially during celebrations. Our houses may not be as grand as the others but we can always welcome those who need shelter. We may be in pain but still we are capable of providing comfort. I am a Filipino and I am very much proud to be one!

In 2010 I moved from Calif USA to the Philippines. The people here are the sweetest, friendliest most hospitable people I've ever met. I just watched how under Manuel Quezon they saved something like 1200 jews from the Holocaust just before WW2. Now this about welcoming the White Russians. The Philippines is my home now and I found my sweet asawa here. Every day seems like the happiest day of my life. The Filipino people have every reason to be proud. God bless the Philippines.

President Quirino is probably the nicest President ever lived. Not only did he release Japanese soldiers back to Japan after the war but he also opened his country that is badly damaged by the war to people in need. When I read the story about how he forgave the Japanese and released them knowing that those same people was the same people who took his wife and children's life blew my mind away. It must've been the hardest decision he had ever made in his life. Specially with the anger of the Filipino people towards the Japanese army. I truly commend him from the bottom of my heart. I salute to you Mr. President.

This part of Philippine history would never have been known, were it not for the efforts of Annaliza Gonzales, former mayor of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, her daughter Kinna Kwan (who did first-hand research and production of the video) and the President Elpidio Quirino Foundation. Kinna traveled to several countries to interview some of the original refugees and their descendants, as well as some Filipinos who made friends with the White Russians and told part of the story, in order to portray an accurate accounting of how President Quirino and the Philippine Government played a big role in saving the lives of over 6,000 White Russians who were escaping Communist tyranny, first during the Russian Revolution and later during the Communist takeover of mainland China. Lastly, I am proud to have been part of that history.

we may be cash poor, but it is ingrained in us that we are rich. that's why it's easy for an average Filipino to give even if they have less, to smile even if they themselves are sad. we are always taught that the world is not about ourselves, but about us as a community.

I knew that the Philippines accepted Jewish refugees from Germany when no other country would, but I had never heard about the White Russian refugees in the Philippines. My late wife in Australia was from a Latvian family. Her parents emigrated to Australia in 1949, around the same time as the resettlement of the White Russians. It is possible some of the people we knew in the Latvian community in Australia may have come to Australia in the way described here.

What refugee has luxury? It’s survival, having a place to settle. When then Filipino Pres Quirino took them with open arms and later visited the camp and ordered putting down the fence, in their own words, it was a symbol of acceptance and hospitality, not to be treated as refugees but as part of the community. Humanity at it’s best. Anyone would take that over being imprisoned, worse killed by the communists.

One of the best documentaries that I have ever seen. The compassion of the Philippines people is insurmountable. This act of kindness by the Philippines president and people changed the world for these beautiful ,intelligent and industrious people. The White Russians were vulnerable and scared and he gave them a home. I love the Philippines people, they are so special, I love them even more now.

*Oh my God! I am crying right now after watching this short film/documentary. Because it happened in my province of Eastern Samar. I am from San Policarpo, Eastern Samar, Philippines. I was born in Metro Manila. But our parents sent us to our grandparents in Samar when I was 4 years old. I grew up in that beautiful province and studied in elementary and high school from 1986 to 1994. From my town of San Policarpo to Guian, is actually 4 hours drive. Yes, our province is one of the most prone to typhoons every year in the Philippines because our province is literally is facing the South Pacific Ocean. But damn! we have beautiful beaches, rock pools, pristine jungles where you can also find the majestic Philippine Eagle, our national bird and one of the top ten largest eagles and largest birds of prey in the world.*
*It's more than 20 years already since I left my hometown of Eastern Samar after moving to the capital city, then went to the middle east for ten years, and finally a dream come true of migrating here in Canada. I got emotional really watching this documentary and I am longing for my beautiful island of Samar, Philippines. I am not aware and never knew that part of our history in my province, about the Russian refugees that lived and survived in my neighboring island of Tubabao. And also about the Vietnamese and Jewish refugees that the Philippines welcomed and accepted. Why these are not on our textbooks in schools and our history teachers never told us all of these? All these very important historical events, and humanitarian aid that my country served to our brothers and sisters from different corners of the world, recently I knew and discovered here on UA-cam. I am so grateful for this platform and to all the people who contributed many relevant pieces of information.*

Years ago, I have a female friend-classmate in La Salle Dasma. She does have a unique features (except her height) and last name, it sounded as Niazef... though I can't remember anymore how it is spelled out or if I did got it right. When I asked about her distinct last name she said it was from her grandfather who is russian(obviously/ likely) and planted roots here in the Philippines decades ago because he fell in love with the country. Though she wasn't able to elaborate the story or simply I can't recall the details of her narrative anymore.... I guess her grandfather is part of those who fled from Russia, as this documentary says..... because it is unlikely that russians knew about the tiny Philippines then or an option to migrate during those times without any compelling reason/s.
