Dear Mr. Howie Severino, gusto ko lang sabihin na magaling talaga kayo ng team nyo sa documentary at sa story-telling, hands down. Palaging maraming natututonan ang mga Pilipino sa historya natin.
Pero gusto ko ring sabihin na yung mga maling tawag ng karamihan ng mga kababayan natin sa mga Pilipinong tisoy / tisay o "half-ganito/ganyan" ay galing din sa mga salita at labels na palaging ginagamit ng mga storytellers sa Philippine media.
Pwede po bang simulan na ninyong gamitin ang "puting Australiano / puting-Amerikano" or "Asianong Ganito / Jamaican na Ganyan" etc... para mapaliwanagan naman ang mga manonood nyo na hindi automatic "Puti" ang mga Australiano o Amerikano ayon sa itsura ng inyong pinag-uusapan. Mga dayuhan din ang mga ninuno nila sa mga lugar ng Australia at Amerika, kagaya ng mga Asiano at kung anu-ano pa -- dayuhan lahat sa Australia at Amerika.
Samakatwid, si Catriona Gray ay hindi "kalahating Australiano" na nangangahulugang puti pala ang mga natural na lahi ng mga Australiano ayon sa itsura nya. Pakisabi po na ang mga Pilipina na katulad ni Catriona ay kalahating PUTING Australiano, dahil napakarami pong uri ng Australiano na pawang mga dayuhan sa lupa ng Australia. Mga Aboriginals at Torres St. Islanders lang po ang totoong lahing Australiano.

Pura Villanueva must be placed in our National Museum as the Mother of Philippines Pageantry to preserve her heroism. ❤️
Pura Villanueva Kalaw was not the first beauty queen she was just the replacement of Leonarda Limjap who was the original that year because the winner declined the title because she was scheduled to go to Japan for a holiday with her family

The 1908 manila carnival was marred with controversies because of the method that the organizer used in determining the winner was by balloting thats why the
Philippine Assembly ( House of Representative today) intervened out of the 69 votes Leonarda Limjap got 39 and the second highest votes went to Pura Villanueva in fact Pura Villanueva was very reluctant to accept the offer to replace Leonarda limjap because she is contented to just rule the Iloilo Carnival. The competition for the very first manila carnival was very stiffed because all of the candidates came from wealthy families and they are all well educated as well thats why the organizers were very concious in choosing the winner . The candidates this year are Leonarda Limjap, Pura Villanueva, Carmen Francia, Dolores De Morio, Paz Yangko and Inocencia Reyes

May naka schedule sya na byahe patungong japan thats why hindi sya pwede pero hindi nangangahulugan na hindi na sya ang winner. My “Lola” was a Manila Carnival entry as Miss Mandaluyong as a young lass. I remember seeing a postcard style picture of her dressed pompously and branded as Miss Mandaluyong. I was desperately trying to inquire about the photo from relatives to no avail. I am so sure that she was the one on the picture because of the prominent mole on the tip of her nose. I wish I could just dream about those times to experience it. It must be very enchanting.

I remember seeing her picture for the first time in a magazine 12 years ago (I'm from Baguio). She is indeed a stunner, with brown skin and thick, wavy long hair; an Ibaloi beauty.

Wow, the Manila Carnival Queen pageant that started in 1908 predates the oldest international pageant that started in 1951 (Miss World). The Philippines was already ahead of its time in that regard. The backstory coupled with interesting facts of that era would make this a brilliant and engaging autobiographical full length feature film. Hope someone takes the initiative.

Sa 300 years na provincia tayo ng Spain. IMPOSIBLE na walang nangyaring madaming intermarriage sa tagal ng panahon na yan gaya na lang ng intermarriage na nangyari sa padres ni Miss Pura Villanueva. We are more Hispanic than you think, kahit 00.1% may dugo ka na ding espñol na pasa pasa henerasyon de henerasyon. Kaya ang Filipinas wala ka ng msasabi na halos "PURE" daw lalo na sa mga ciudad, panahon pa lang ng Español lahing lahi na halos lahat ng Filipino. Sa side namin (mother side) my grandfather is a mestizo and fluently speaks Spanish, while my grandma chinese mestiza. (Father side) mix of Hispanic-Filipinos). Culturang Español na talaga ang hindi talaga maalis sa Filipinas kahit sinakop pa tayo ng dutch, americano, hapon hanggng sa naka independencia culturang español pa din ang gamit ng bansang Filipinas.

Additional information.....Pura was a second choice, the original winner was Leonarda Limjap, a Chinese meztisa and daughter of industrialist Mariano Limjap and Maria Escolar who owned a beautiful mansion near Ayala Bridge and Echague St. (now Carlos Palanca St.) in Quiapo, Manila. She however had to relinquish the crown to Pura to join her family in their family trip to Japan....
Therefore, it was meant for Pura 😊😊😊

Ronaldo Adoptante, nice to know. Very grateful for you to point it out. Wow! But, unfortunately, Leonarda Limjap missed the boat when she relinquished the crown. " To the winner, the glory!", as the saying goes. And, maybe, the crown was really intended for Pura, the Queen of the Orient. She has a very good advocacy that represented the true sentiment of the Filipino people during those times, the American Occupation of the Philippines. It was through her leadership with help from her fellow women organization that the Filipino women were given the right to vote. Amazing, indeed!
But, it would still be interesting to know what Leonarda Limjap contributed for our country, her own life story.

Her reason was that she was traveling to Japan for a month in the company of Mr. Regidor and his daughter and further expressed that “she does not want to miss the opportunity to travel in the company of such a nice family”.
With just a few days to go before the opening of the Carnival, the title was offered to the reigning Queen of Iloilo who had placed a strong second to Leonarda: Purita Villanueva. A telegram was quickly dispatched to Iloilo, but Pura initially declined the proposal, preferring to represent her province. A day later, she relented and accepted her appointment with grace.
