  • In Series voltage adds up and Amps stay the same
    In Parallel voltage stays the same and Amps add up
    It is important to stay withing the wattage, voltage and amperage specifications of your charge controller / solar pump controller. If you don't do this you will damage your solar equipment. This is a very quick video to explain the concept.

      You will need to look in the manufacturer manual to see what is allowed, most inverters will have a range they can work with, outside of the range the inverter won't accept the grid power.

    Solar panel system
    I have 325 watt solar panels they are 34 volt panels with a open current voltage of 42 volts and with max current at 9.32 amps. I have a Rover PG 60 amp MPPT solar charge controller with a max open current voltage of 150 volts and I plan to use the 48 volt system which is rated at 3200 watts for a 48 volt system. I have a 48 volt lithium ion battery 50ah with 3.5 kw. So based off the max wattage input I can only install 9 -- 325 watt solar panels which equals to 2925 watts and a open current voltage of 379 volts which is way over the max open current voltage of 150 volts rated for the charge controller, so my question is which pv module wiring configuration do I use to wire my 9 solar panels to my charge controller and also I checked the manual of the controller and there is no pv module configurations, please I need help which wiring configuration do I use to install my solar panels ???????

      @hederyat6161 2 роки тому

      I am not practically inclined in solar energy installation but with fee materials i have read, i think parallel connection of of panels will suit better. Because with this connection, your VOC remains 42volts but current increases. However, you need to be sure that your charge controller can withstand the current output of your panel.
      Please, kindly put me through guys if i am wrong

    • @CedarSolar
      @CedarSolar  11 місяців тому

      The charger has a max of 150v so then you need to make 3 strings of 3 panels in parallel. You will use a 3 to 1 combiner - then you stay under the 150v limit (3 x 42) and your amps will times by 3 (28) - which is still under the 60 amps of the charger. But consult a local professional if you are not sure, you don't want to damage your equipment. Component voltages are almost always hard limits that you don't want to go over. If you do the unit will get damaged.

      You can use Victron's MPPT calculator and it will show you what will work, temperatures in your will also have an effect. Select 'custom module' and enter your panel's specs in there. www.victronenergy.com/mppt-calculator

    • @CedarSolar
      @CedarSolar  3 роки тому

      @@joatmofa0405 It depends on how you setup the configuration of the panels. Start with system voltage. 48V. Then get a charger that can do 48V and look at the Voc and Amp limits. EG If you making 2 strings of 4 panels you need a controller that can handle 214V Volts (4 x 49.1V) + 7% temperature safety factor 18V (Assuming it doesn't go below -8 degrees Celsius in your area) and 25 / 30Amps (10.1 x 2 rounded up).
      Best is to download the specs of 48V MPPTs you are interested in buying and make sure you are within the Voc and Amp limits. That MPPT calculator is super useful and takes temperature into consideration and gives very accurate sizing.
      I don't think many MMPTs are available that will handle all of those panels in series. so your options are 2 strings of 4 or 4 strings of 2 panels. And do the calculations for both options.

      @@CedarSolar Thanks for that.
      I have decided on a 150V / 100A MPPT controller (bit of an overkill, but it can handle future upgrades).
      I'm also going for 24 x 400W panels : 3 x series strings of 8 x 400W parallel panels [ 3 x [8 x 10.1A=80.8A] 49.1V = 147.3V]]
      TOTAL CONNECTION 147.3V / 80.8A this will work 100% on a 150V / 100A MPPT charge controller!

    So you've explained how panel wiring can vary in volts and amps. With all components and conditions considered within optimal range, can you explain which wiring, series vs. parallel, is most beneficial. In other words, why do I want more amps as in parallel compared to volts as in series?

    • @CedarSolar
      @CedarSolar  11 місяців тому +2

      Hi Robert, the quick answer is that almost all solar equipment (inverter, charger, batteries etc..} has a voltage, amp and wattage range that it operates in. The panel configuration (series/parallelcombo of the two) will be chosen to work within these limits. You can find these in the manual of the charge controller/MPPT charger.

      No difference on panel life. For performance: PWM chargers will most likely lead to parallel connections and MPPTs will allow for more panels in series. So read the solar charger specs and look at the recommendations and limitations of the charger then decide on your panel configuration accordingly.
