  • Enthusiastic Steve reviews the Crt SS 9900 CB Radio. After my recent videos I have had many questions and comments about the SS 9900 CB Radio that I use, so here is a video talking about the radio, testing the power output and using it live on 27mhz. This radio compared to some other radios is truely... "Out of this world".
    Power testing from 10.11
    On air from 14.17

    Great video 📹, the ss-9900 are a good radio for the money, careful rf gain adjustment will provide great signals on rx. I use mine with a K-po pwr mic on low gain, sounds great on all modes. The only thing that let's the rig down is lack of a decent heat sink. I recommend driving low pwr into a linear amp. Best 73

    I am still very interested in one of these or the Anytone 6666 (basically the same radio). I cant find any reviews on the Scarlet Warrior or any comparisons with the Scarlet Warrior with other antenna's. I have a new Crew Cab Pick Up truck. I will probably use a Sirio Turbo 5000 through the roof on a 3" Breedlove Puck mount. I also might use a Hustler HQ27 through the roof. I have been on CB since 1968. I have never been a fan of stock mic's and I still have a new looking Astatic 575M6 Power Mic.

    If you have the crt SS6900 you can use the cable to program the radio via computer. Take the cover off the radio. There is a lead from the back to the front with the same 3 pin plug on it. Remove the cable from behind the volume control and plug the SS6900 lead in and off you go. Thank me later.

    Hello! The only thing that annoy me is the fact that if we switch from channel mode let's say CB 19 into frequency mode and accidentally we change the frequency, let's say from 27.185 to 28.185, when back in channel mode, it will keep the changed frequency. Practically the channel mode became useless, each and every time, when switching between channels I have to check the frequency and compare it to the frecquency table and when driving, this is almost impossible and very dangerous. This is a way to avoid that? Thanks!

    I mounted a 25mm PC cooling fan on robber grommets on the heatsink works a treat the only thing I don't like about this radio is the roger beep there' 5 and not one of them is a straight single tone other than that this is one hell of a radio for the money very compact and well thought out controls I'm running it along side me Cobra 158 GTL-DX and my OmegaForece S45 and using a vintage Avanti Astroplane for the twig.

    Hi Stephen. After watching many videos I bought one, a great little radio for the money. I have heard occasionaly the Switzerland repeater but understand in needs 1750 Hz tone to access. Does this radio have 1750 Hz or is their some other way of opening up the repeater? Many thanks for all your excellent videos.

      Hi John, I believe for the 10m repeater you do not need a access code. For 70cm you do. Have a look at one of my other videos where I test/compare a Thunderbolt antenna to my Gainmaster. In it I speak to the repeater on my 9900. Have a look at the radios screen, I don't believe I has any tone set? Regards Steve

    • @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
      @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV  5 місяців тому +1

      You can adjust the freq by khz and program channels to particular freq, no computer required, i would use a 15 to 20 amp supply if considering running at full power, though fm is demanding if at full power use a 20amp supply. The radio will get very hot. Best to run with less power to prolong radio life, a few extra watts out makes very little or no noticable difference in signal. If looking for big power run radio low power and use an amplifier. I regularly get to the USA from uk with just 10w, even got Australia and held a 15min conversation to Australia on just 10w, its mainly down to propagation. The latest version has more output power than the version i tested. All the best regards Steve

Most people use the stock microphone that comes with the radio as it appears to most to give a clear strong audio. Hello, well a million dollar question. Height is might, especially for local/ground wave contacts so a outside 5/8th wave is best, at least 20ft off the ground. But if you want just dx, ssb etc, then you cold make a simple di pole, 2 lengths of wire cut to 1/4 wave each. Coax joining in the middle. This could be slung horizontal in the loft if you have room, a great dx antenna. Always better outside but an antenna will work inside. Good luck and enjoy, its a good radio and the bands are getting busier with dx. Regards Steve

      My own view is they are both good radios, but i would prefer the 9900. Depends what you are looking for in a radio, looks, power, size etc. One to consider is the new crt 7900, larger display plus effective noise cancelling built in. With all these radios, they can all run good power but be careful as they do run extremely hot if you hold long conversations. Just run them at 75% or less and they shoul be fine. Regards Steve

You may have seen my other cb antenna video, the K40 surprisingly came out on top. The bigger longer antennas also work well but can be cumbersome and need a strong mount if mobile.

    I guess no one seems to be worried that this radio is not type certified for CB, among other things, max 4w AM/FM, 12w/SSB. If you are using the radio mobile, just hope you don't get stopped by a cop who knows something about CB and amateur radio. But, as we all know, shit sometimes happens.

    • @TrafficCamWatch
      @TrafficCamWatch 2 роки тому +5

      You are more likely to get pulled over for speeding than using a powerful CB radio. Remember, there are annual publicly known contest for Channel 6 use where people use radios that would put even the best AM station to shame. The FCC has abandoned CB frequencies, and that makes it clear.

      Hello Mark, best to wire into a battery, 12v supply, 12v sockets may be 10amp, the radio should not use a full 10amp but it could put a strain on it. Antenna wise probably a mag mounted one would suit your needs, I did an antenna test of some cb Antenna's in another one of my videos. Choice depends on if you want to use it driving mobile or just when parked up static. Most mag mounts come with a rubber boot on the base to protect car paint work. If out and about you could call into nevada radio, not too many miles from you to see what they had in stock, antennas and mounts. All the best regards Steve

      The v4 has an extended freq range, handy if you are an amateur radio user as well as it covers the 12m band. Other than that much the same as its previous versions, it may have a slighty higher tx output. Older versions just as good and may still be found and will be cheaper. Any savings can be put to a good antenna, mount or coax. The standard mic on the 9900 works so not much improvement if upgraded to a powered on. Regards Steve

      Hi, it all depends on budget, I personally would by a cb with ssb modes but not as cheap as a standard fm only radio. Export mode radios give more channels but may not be legal in your country. Find a good local radio retailer, look at what they stock, any of the Crt based radios are very good, the president Mckinley cb is a very decent radio, see my other video, never too late to the party, for info on that one. If buying a used one test it first if a private buy. Then get a good antenna, a power mic is optional, but not needed on some radios as supplied mic is good enough. Enjoy the radio when you get one. Regards Steve

    How does this compare to K-PO DX-5000 PLUS ?

    • @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV

      Not had one to compare but on paper they appear similar. I had a radio, different brand name, similar to the 5000 plus but I preferred the 9900. My favourite radio is the President Mckinley , less power but goor audio recieve with a forward facing speaker. The 5000 plus promises to be a good radio and I would like to try one if I could. I don't have that radio anymore but it is a fairly simple process, on my one it was a v4 i just did the following :
      Press and hold MENU key and BAND key while you turn on the radio .
      The radio display HF BAND 28-29.7 MHz, turn the channel rotator to display CB BAND 24.880-30.105 MHz.
      Press and hold MENU key to save your choice.
      Beaware this could affect your warranty if new, though most dealers if asked will supply in export mode. Regards Steve

    • @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
      @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV  Рік тому

      Depends on so many things, car to car in town 3 miles, higher up 12 miles, hill to hill upto 100 miles, that's ground wave, with skip 5000 plus miles is achievable. Often speak out to around 1000 miles fm and ssb. Often listen to ch6 the super bowl channel from the USA, and its possible to talk back to them. Its all down to propagation when using the radio, you do not need massive power. Regards Steve

    • @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
      @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV  Рік тому +1

      On Am, Fm or data modes it may get warm even on low power. The heat sink transfers the heat out of the radio, the heat is generated inside so may transfer to the chassis. As long as the vswr is suitably low and the power is not at the upper end for extended time i would think this is acceptable. If heat sink is getting hot then its doing its job, if if it remains cool may need to check that it is still joined to the chassis ok.

    • @daienaa
      @daienaa Рік тому +1

      @@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV The only problem with the swr is that the internal swr meter and an external meter doesn’t agree with each other. I don’t understand why they mismatch so I have decided to trust the radios built in one. It would be devastating if it didn’t have a built in because then I would have trusted the external meter which doesn’t show the true swr. The radio would be fried then

    • @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
      @EnthusiastSteveM6WVV  Рік тому +1

      They sometimes vary a little but shouldnt be that far apart. On mine the internal meter is fairly accurate. I would for piece of mind try radio on a different antenna or a different meter to compare again. Even a cheap new meter should give an accurate measurement. Or get a dummy load and connect it with a swr meter and radio, you sjould get a perfect match on both, that will show how much out either is.

    It's a legal ham radio, not a CB radio. It's illegal to modify the output transmit on these radios, from what it was intended, and sold to perform as a 10 meter transmitter. Modifying it to transmit on the CB band is illegal, and it's higher rated power output is also illegal on the 27 MHz band. This practice has to stop. You want a radio that transmits long distance, then get off your assess, and get your ham license, and do it legally. CB was not intended to work long distances with high power outputs. Huge fines should be imposed for this type of action. Governments need to put their feet down, and stop this practice by CBer's. What are you lazy CBer's, lazy in not getting your ham license?
