      Lebanese Edgyist I didn't think it was so common but it makes sense. Writing is one outlet that can be done from within prison walls, that and art. Harold's blog, though, is not run by relatives but by two penpals, one blog master, the other editor.

    Breakout episode recipe:
    -Impossible to escape
    -“I’ll die here if I don’t leave”
    -Sudden idea for escape
    -Moment of suspense where they think “I’m screwed”
    -Escape
    -Problem during escape(Patrol van, can’t cut fence, etc.)
    -Flashes of being on a beach or living it up in a paradise
    -Robbery/Theft
    -Another moment of suspense
    -Capture

      I was locked up in Melbourne at a high security prison in the middle of the CBD.
      The cell windows faced a busy city street.
      There was Perspex and 3 steel bars welded to a flat steel window frame but the bars didn't penetrate the frame.
      We had electric Kettles in our cells.
      I could have stolen the long electric cord from the vacuum cleaner, smashed the kettle to get to the heat element.
      Use the long cord and the Heat element to melt the Perspex.
      This would take about 2 hours.
      Use fan to blow smell outward. Perspex doesn't smoke at that temperature anyway.
      Attach foil to left bar connecting top to bottom so the alarm isn't tripped when separated.
      Cut bar with wire from extension cord covered with cutting agent made from steel shavings sand creamer and glue from shoe soles.
      There was a key cutting station like at a shopping centre. The grindings and the lubricant that builds up is a perfect cutting agent. Once mixed with something sticky and thick.
      Rope blanket to the street. Then you're getting chased unless you're super lucky but you could have a motor cycle waiting.
      If you know that part of the city we'll there are lots of alleys and bike paths etc.
      Not sure if this would have worked but it killed time thinking about it.

      @michaelgeorge4780 6 місяців тому

      I'm 5 years late, but it is a huge difference. He was a minor at the time of his crime, so his life sentence cannot be charged as a life with no parole. If you listen at the beginning, you see that he was actually given a 35 year sentence ("life", but he's eligible for release after 35 years). He'd be free right now as we speak had he not escaped. But I do not blame him one bit for attempting that escape. That guy deserves 100% to be free. He didn't want to join the Neo-Nazis, he didn't hurt anyone while on the run, he could've easily shot the officer that was stopping him. The guy was punished wayyy too harshly. There is another 10 years of brain development left for a 16 year old, to charge him for the murder and then give him 35 years is disgusting. Leave it to some stupid hick state like Texas to come up with medieval laws like that

      It was the guards fault. I would have sued them for letting that crazy inmate say he's going to kill him by morning time. IF he didn't break out. He would have died and that's the whole prisons fault. I would ask for a new trial and open a law suit for time taken off my bid and some money from pain and suffering, along with moving him to a better prison. I'm sure if he fought for it he could have gotten something out of it and a lot of guards and the warden would be toast out of a job.

I am convinced that society is better served having him OUT rather than IN. He has shown remorse and consistently shown his efforts to educate and improve himself. He has never asked me for one single thing and often helped me sort things out. His whole family has turned their backs on him. I and a friend in Germany (a reporter) are keeping his new website going. He writes, she manages the site, and I copyedit. Stopping and sleeping in your car at a rest stop, there's a too good chance that a cop will come and knock on your door, even if it's just to do a breath test or see that you're alright, or ask for your license because you're looking for a robber in the area or something. Damn, why wouldn't you find a quiet out of the way stop in the bushes, out of public view!

    Ok... What's the fucking point of adding time to a life sentence? -_-

    • @BlackHawkDown2
      @BlackHawkDown2 10 років тому +9

      Life sentence is not exactly life sentence. It differs in different countries. In US I think "life sentence" = 25 or 30 years. After that the court will review the sentence - gives parole or sets them totally free. In India "life sentence" = 14 years after which prisoners are mostly released without going back to court.
      Adding time to life sentence without parole is what you are talking about.

    • @alantaylor6691
      @alantaylor6691 7 років тому +2

      Hell, if you get a life sentence, which is usually about 15 years, you can be out in 10 years with good behaviour. Life sentence literally equals 15 years in a lot of cases. Sometimes even less.

    Unfortunately In Car obsessed America it's the thing to do, and cars are checked by police when a fujitive is on the run, much easier to escape in a place away from city life and main roads.

    Stealing a car is one thing not to do during an escape. Police are waiting for you to make a mistake or a moving violation so they can grill you and take you back to jail. Had this guy walked during the whole escape, like John Parsons did, then he could have stayed out for longer than two months as well or maybe even longer if he'd high-tailed it to Mexico. He was so close to there but chose not to do that and was caught in a stolen vehicle after falling asleep at the wheel. All the escapees of the Breakout series are smart in that they can figure out an escape but stupid in that they make a mistake that gets them caught again, which police are waiting for.

      Actually, this is my 3rd time watching this! In fact, I've watched "Breakout", so many times..........If I ever got locked up...... I think I would know how to escape. Unfortunately, most people who have escaped from a jail or prison has been caught!!! Sooner or later. The ONLY exception are the men who escaped from Alcatraz. And, while they were assumed DEAD, they've never found the makeshift raft, paddles, or any other physical evidence that would support the notion that they drowned!!!

  • @DougglesMagnificent

    really wanted this guy to be able to stay out.
    in a lockup raw episode there was another escapee who managed to get 500 miles out of state but he got caught the same way, passed out in the car.
    i'd drive to the nearest big city, ditch the car, and go to a homeless shelter or even skid row (where rough sleepers are common) and figure shit out after a night of sleep. you're always a sitting duck in a vehicle, especially stolen, and especially in the USA, where cops are such busybodies who love to rustle anyone in a parked car or a car period. i'm from canada, where admittedly it is a lot easier to pull off somewhere and hop in the back for a snooze. also, always better to park in a crowded lot and make yourself not visible with a sheet or tarp. being the only car somewhere is asking for it.

      +DougglesMagnificent Harold had no place to go and no money. Plus it's disorienting to all of a sudden be in the "free world" as opposed to a cell in prison. They've now kept him in solitary for 11 years since that time because he's a threat to their careers. They don't plan to let him out. However, his behaviour record has been very good, and he's well liked by the prison guards. Go figure. I write him all the time, and I think he would do well as a legally free man. PS I'm Canadian too.

      Patricia Russell yes, i'm sure it's pure overload to suddenly be out in the open like that - my comment was mostly some classic youtube expertise-in-hindsight, lol. in reality all the armchair tactical thinking in the world falls away when one's on the run with no funds or safe destination like you said.
      i was actually planning to write him as well when i first saw this episode, and your comment reminded me! i also think he'd do fine on the outside - he doesn't have the born-to-lose mindset of a real habitual con. he'd make a great handyman or, with some education, an engineer with a troubleshooting specialty...just imagine how resourceful he'd be doing something like industrial pipeline insulation or retrofitting. to think there are probably far more evil offenders out there who still have out dates because they decided to snitch or something.

    • @patriciarussell6683
      @patriciarussell6683 9 років тому +1

      +DougglesMagnificent I actually went to visit him. We had no problem talking - there was no lull in the conversation. He only has a ninth grade education but a good mind (and heart). A quite a scientific bent, yes - would make a good engineer. I've been writing to him for over a year now. He has a blog too, and an art site (this woman sells his art from The Netherlands or at least she used to). Please do write to him - he'd be very pleased. Letters are his life-line. He's in a cell 23 hours a day. Never mind good behaviour. It almost seems they have no intention of ever letting him out. This is in contravention of the whole system as it is supposed to work! Harold is a pen pal of mine and what he said to me about the show is. A lot of what really happened the director changed. so you saw what he MADE UP. The truth is much longer. The show cut out a lot of what really happened and had to be change a lot to properly get the point across in a fast way. The only thing that is close to fact was how I got out of my cell and over the fence. The rest only the basics were true but how it happened had been changed. Some of those changes made me look stupid but maybe ill get the chance to set the record straight.

    I am also a penpal of Harold's. Yes he murdered two people - a terrible, terrible thing. He was young, homeless, desperate, had been passed around from foster home to foster home most of his young life, was very angry...one thing led to another and he made some bad decisions, bad in the extreme. I feel awful for the families of the victims. Yet on the other hand I hear from Harold that what he did haunts him and he is very remorseful. I take that as being sincere. He is intelligent and gosh I hope he never tries to escape again or he'll have ZERO hope of ever being a free man. What I'm trying to say is: some people are inherently evil - I take Harold as being someone who can change and make use of his talents and not inherently evil, sociopathic, or psychopathic. Yes I can and do feel bad for him without downplaying what he did.

      One documentary stated that his mom lied to him about being raped. He killed the man that supposedly raped her. He might have gotten a bad break in life because of his mom, but let's be honest here. This guy is not going to ever get out prison. If he was innocent, then there might be a chance.

    • @patriciarussell6683
      @patriciarussell6683 10 років тому +2

      No - he completely owns his crime. However, he was sentenced to "35 flat" and his parole hearing is in 2027. I don't believe he's not meant to ever see the light of day again. The 20 extra years added on for the breakout I would question. It seems his life was in jeopardy for not joining the racist gang and he did not hurt anyone while out.

    • @teamchb3143
      @teamchb3143 10 років тому +1

      Patricia Russell
      The documentary I Almost Got Away With It states that his mom claimed that she was raped, he killed the guy, and it turns out that his mom lied to him about begin raped. So he killed the man for no reason and Harold's life was basically ruined b/c of that lie.

    • @patriciarussell6683
      @patriciarussell6683 10 років тому +1

      He has never mentioned that to me. However in one letter he told me he forgave his mother a long time ago (for what, he didn't say). He also mentioned that she had him diagnosed with epilepsy when he was small and he took meds for it. He says that later it was borne out that he never had had seizures and he had been taking the meds for nothing. Reminds me of "Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome". He also told me that because of things his mother told his sister he is estranged from her and no members of his family go and see him (Mother as attention-seeker). From what he writes I take him for basically having his heart in the right place and a spiritual sort of person....

    • @teamchb3143
      @teamchb3143 10 років тому +2

      If he is mad at his mom, I can certainly understand why. The man he killed supposedly raped his mom, but during that episode I mentioned, he stated that he feels like she made it all up. Now why he killed the other person, I guess he didn't want to leave any witnesses.
      So I don't know if she lied about it, but he feels like she did.

      Why do everyone go to mexico?

    • @VagueMemory
      @VagueMemory 8 років тому +3

      +Haakon Johansen They go to Mexico because it is the closest country they can go to where police from the U.S. cannot pursue them. As soon as they cross that border the police can no longer go after them and it is up to Mexico authorities to do so which makes it much easier for the escapees to stay on the run.

    • @lethalspecter
      @lethalspecter 8 років тому +3

      +Vague Memory Not entirely true. The Mexican police has very good relationship with the U.S. marshals. The mexican government will hand you over to the U.S. in a heart beat if you are a U.S. citizen and the marshals are looking for you. Mexico is very tight because that is where most, if not all the escaped prisoners go in order to get away from the U.S. You're honestly better off boarding a freight ship if you are an escaped convict especially if you don't speak Spanish. From there you can go where ever.

    • @DoomFinger511

      Because south of Mexico is the rest of the entire southern hemisphere to escape into on land. It's much easier to hid in those countries then just Canada.

    So next time he won't do that mistake of sleeping ever again. He has learnt his mistake n has tasted the breth of freedom n felt it , so he still craves n wants that free feeling , n am sure he is working on his super last escape ,n with his MacGyver skills n abilities he won't get caught again.
