    Videos like this sadly make you realize how very little praise is given to the combat designers of these games. They should celebrated as industry legends like Naughty Dog and GOW Reboot team (Forgot Name, Don’t Kill me Lol.)
    Like honestly, it is insane that DMC4, a SINGLE PLAYER GAME with no practically no online elements whatsoever, literally rivals, and arguably even surpasses big time multiplayer games that constantly are getting new content.
    I personally find that incredible.

    It's fascinating how no other games have tried to reach the same kind of gameplay freedom DMC4 gives us. PlatinumGames are well known for pushing out crazy action games of a similar caliber, especially Bayonetta, but their philosophy is tied more in making players FEEL stylish rather than working hard to BE stylish. Of course Bayonetta still offers its own depth but DMC4 will continue to have a lasting appeal because there's just so much to discover here. I say this as someone who has been watching DMC4 content made from pro players from the sidelines for ages now.
    I'm only just starting to scratch the surface this year, having already experienced the entire DMC series several months back, but DMC4 and 5 have quickly become my favorite games purely because it's just so damn fun experimenting with all the possible combos one can do. I hope that as the years go by, we'll continue to see a wonderful community devoted to just simply pushing for all these crazy stylish plays (for all cuhrayzee games, not just DMC4) from both new and old players, and this video is certainly helping to keep it fresh. Great video! Keep it up!

      For real, it's a shame she only got to appear as a voice from offscreen and on the phone in DMC5.
      For all the shit people like to give to passive characters like Kyrie, her issue would be remarkably easy to fix; just give her something to do and be passionate about, that would give us more solid idea who she is.

    • @theworstcatholic7247
      @theworstcatholic7247 4 роки тому +8

      @@jondoe7036 I mean we already kind of do know what she's like personality wise. She's shy, reserved and compassionate. Also must have an ludicrous amount of patience if she's willing to be in a relationship with Nero and run an orphanage. I mean her second scene was her willingly ready to give her life up for a child, so compassionate and brave, to a stupid degree even there and a love of children with that knowledge and the orphanage. She's also very supportive of Nero, as in shown in 4 and 5, especially about his own insecurities.
      I mean I'd love to get to know more of her and all much like the next guy. And she was totally a damsel in distress in 4, however I gotta go against Code about him saying it was some sexist shit, considering the entire rest of the female cast in the series. They were just going for something different is all. When most characters are wacky, she's pretty tame, where most are extroverted to an extreme, she's obviously very timid, personality wise anyways.
      She's ironically the most unique DMC girl in that sense considering the rest of the females all act pretty similarly in their demeanor. Though I don't mind not seeing her in five, considering what they did to Trish and Lady in it, Kyrie likely would be flat in it. Not every character needs to be a demon killing bad ass.
      That being said, watching her play to her strengths in a game would be nice, perhaps helping in a relief effort with the surviving kids of redgrave city? It'd fit in her character and be somewhat related to the game. Maybe give Nero some green orbs or stars randomly in different places when you see her, showing her support. The problem with her character type in a game like this is it's difficult to put them in any major meaningful way since the games are all about combat, unless she somehow can get Nero weapons, which is already taken up by Nico.

    • @jondoe7036
      @jondoe7036 4 роки тому +5

      @@theworstcatholic7247 True, it's not like we wouldn't have already gotten some idea as to what she is like as a person, but just getting to actually see her do her thing, even as just a background detail and establish some sort of dynamic with rest of the cast beyond couple of on-screen interactions she's had with Nero would do wonders at enforcing what's already there and make Kyrie's presence in the story that much more endearing. It's still hard to argue, that she wasn't really an active character with any agency outside of the intro-cutscenes of the first two missions and perhaps a teeny bit at the end credit scenes in DMC4, and since the game would mostly frame her presence in the story as a passive damsel, saving whom became Nero's driving motivation for the latter half of the game, that's how players by enlarge tend to remember her.
      Honestly I don't mind the whole damsel in distress business by itself that much either, but execution-wise I'd have liked it if she'd get to react to it beyond just quietly waiting to be rescued and giving of a look of anxious hopefulness, whenever Nero would get close enough to her and the villains for him and us to see her being held captive; getting a clearer idea what that experience actually was like for her would have already gone a long way at making her character feel more involved and have people be generally way more sympathetic towards her. It would have definitely lessened the odds of there being bunch of people actively wishing she'd just get killed off at the start of DMC5 (not that I would remotely understand that sentiment as is).
      Well Nico also kinda stands out, in that she's more this sort of socially crude hyper energetic geek, doesn't directly partake in the fighting and outside her insane car stunts she's a regular human-being, juxtaposed next to Trish and Lady's more straight-laced and competent badass action heroiness, with differing capabilities for pulling off superhuman feats and occational dip into Dante's addrenaline junkiness. In any case, I agree on Kyrie kinda being the most normal human-being in the main cast makes her an unique presence in the series and there could be some interesting directions they could take with that.
      One simple way I could think of as to how they could have included Kyrie in DMC5, would have been to add Nero the option to call home from the same phone booths he uses to summon Nico. You could have had them have some spousal banter and differing exchanges of Nero giving cheeky summary of what had happened in the prior mission and Kyrie giving account of what stuff she has been up to in Fortuna. Maybe one call would be her playing something really wacky sounding with the kids they're taking care of and in another she'd be feeling sultry and make Nero flustered on his end of the phone. That stuff would pretty much write itself and it would have also worked as a neat build up to that scene of Nero calling Kyrie just before his final bossfight. Gameplay-wise you could have also connected some side-objectives to it, like maybe the kids would want to see what some specific demons look like and Nero would have to hunt an x amount or some hidden colour-coded version of said demon for a souvenier trophy, or something like that.

    So THIS is where you hid after that twitter thread? Really nice work. I think this vid is now the best answer possible to "what's the deal with DMC4?" in terms of both flaws and merits. You really did it justice.
    Also, don't know if you've heard, but modders have figured out ways to add back a lot of the mechanics removed from 5/fix the issues, and its gameplay has transformed in the best way possible over the last couple of months as a result, and will continue to do so in the future (I'm not joking, it isn't even the same game anymore).
    You don't have to talk about it in your 5 vid, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this at some point since you discussed combat depth, expression, and what encourages them so much here, and the fixes have added a lot of synergy and depth to the character kits that was just missing before (I almost think the game was designed with those things in mind looking at what was datamined, before the devs took a different direction partway through development and decided to scrap the mechanics).

      Not just the reversals and momentum, the enemy step without any delays, guard cancel, breaker switching, animation swaps to replace similar functions for more needed ones (like replacing Balrog Feather Combo with only the last hit so you get a spike function like Hammer in DMC3 to knock enemies down below you).
      The list goes on, but they add an incredible amount to the game.

    One of the worst things about DMC4's story is that I can see how it could've been great, the dynamic between Nero and Credo is an interesting parallel to Dante and Vergil, with Credo becoming consumed by his loyalty to The Order Of The Sword as Nero distances himself from it with Credo later himself, early concept art shows Kyrie in more militaristic attire, the Saviour evolves over the story, starting off as a fetus and growing into what we see in the game, on paper this is the most ambitious narrative a DMC game has done but perhaps because of a rushed development cycle, we didn't get this story

    Kyrie is underrated. What makes an interesting fictional character doesn't necessarily make a well standing human being.
    Lady is a nice person when she drops her guard, but when she doesnt she shoots at people, she is mentally scarred by her family tragedy, she is consumed and throws away her life in pursuit of revenge.
    Kyrie....is nice. She is kind, loving, supporting, she has her own family tragedies but focuses on rebuilding with what she has left. She can not fend for herself, but thats most regular people. (Also she is good at cooking and has wide hips. Good for childbearing. Nero knows whats up :p)

    The really oddball thing about Kyrie is that it seems she HAS personality traits that could be interesting, we just never really see them. She has exactly one good line, where she tells Nero his sword yearns for his touch (a really low-key bit of humor on her part about the sword being called Red Queen). Then in DMC5 you find out things secondhand like: Kyrie is apparently a big talker and also that kind of home cook who makes too many damn servings per meal, both of which are kind of endearing, but... Kyrie, a talker? We didn't see much of that in 4, did we... and yet, Nero turns to her immediately for support at the end of the game, and just a little bit of encouragement from her settles him. Woulda been really impactful if we, like, had a chance to get to know her as a character directly. >.>

    • @xtoadsannom6704
      @xtoadsannom6704 4 роки тому

      I don't know, I find that third cutscene kind of nice for her. First, there is something inherently funny about her dragging in that big-ass crate, with the sound announcing that she's arriving. Second, if you go with the idea that she's teasing Nero throughout, the "yearn for your touch" line (are we talking about the sword or you there Kyrie ?) and the pendant (sure to bring Nero's gaze smack to her chest) become much funnier.
      Also, I think they dropped the ball when it comes to the animation (that pose when she's standing with her hands crossed before her is horrendous) and the design of her clothes (that thing feels like it's restraining her movements completely).

    • @OneTrueNobody
      @OneTrueNobody 4 роки тому

      @@xtoadsannom6704 The line about the sword yearning for Nero's touch is a play on the sword's name: Red Queen. I feel like games like this can still be done, and that they can be done even if "polished". DMC4 is the only game that provides the freedom and the ability to manipulate its systems the way it does... among character action games. What if you had a game where the core of the gameplay was freedom instead of style or "being a badass" like basically the entire genre? Wouldn't developers intenionally make open ended mechanics like inertia so that players can abuse them? There are games like that in different genres, the biggest one right now being Breath of the Wild. But you can see that kind of design in different games from different genres, like Divinity Original Sin, Dishonored and Metal Gear Solid 3 and 5.
    The thing with pretty much every character action game other than DMC4 is that, while creativity is a certainly a part of some of them, they aren't designed for you to become a performance artist as you put it. The DMC games have some of open ended systems that allow you to do a lot of stuff, but that's because of the relation the devs see between variety and style, not because they want you to abuse those systems the same way you can in Dishonored or Divinity. DMC4, by accident, stumbled into that kind of design and it's brilliant because of it. But I'm 100% sure that if Capcom made the effort to build a game with freedom and expression in mind they *could* do it, and it could be better than DMC4.

    I have a good example of a hidden gem mechanic being patched out. Absolver is a 3D fighting game where you can create your own combos using a 4 stance deck building system. In the early days the stances would switch automatically based on positioning. Normally (for simplicitys sake) youd have 2 options for your next attack, square and triangle for default ps4. But certain moves would change your position by the way they moving, causing the stance to switch automatically for a short time, meaning with the correct timing you could double your options for your next attack (from 2 to 4). I was the only one who really looked into this and i never made a viable deck 100% focused on this mechanic (i made some pretty successful ones that integrated this) and in one of the final updates they changed it so stances couldn't automatically switch rendering this impossible to pull off in the current game

    Oh wow! I've been following your work for quite some time, and you've greatly improved. Great work.
    I've been a DMC "fan" in the tone and style and in that I'm a fan of 3rd person action adventure games, rather than tech, depth and mastery. However when I got active on the Internet around 2013/14, I learnt about the latter things. So when I applied some of them in another hack n slash game Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, I was floored to find almost an entirely new game behind the normal one. Unsupringly, I practiced bit of chaining moves and abilities in DMC 4 SE and I could peer into its depth. But since I never committed to it, I've gotten rusty and now that I've grown up, I'm short of time as well. So this video was actually a great look into the mechanics and depth that were there.
    Also if you want to know just how much I was obsessed with DMC (mainly 3 and 4), I had downloaded almost ever wallpaper I could find, torrented it's music with random ass file names, saw AMVs, tried acting cool like Dante in my subconscious, even downloaded an app for DMC wallpapers for my old ass Android phone when playstore had no quality control.
    Sorry for sounding like an old fart reminiscing the good (awkward) old days.
    One tinsy-winsy feedback, I wish you would've talked about the differences in base DMC4 and DMC4SE. I've heard lot of high level players like VashTSB preferring the former.

    Honestly, 4 was my first DMC game and I've always compared every other game to it as a result, where I feel everyone else compares it to 3.
    The fact that Dante went through the same levels as Nero really didn't bother me because I was experiencing them as a different character and was forced to mix up my strategy with enemy types because of it, and the Style switching mechanic is so deep that I still haven't mastered it. It's true that they're the same locations, but for example, the forest area has a cute gimmick where you have to follow Echidna's voice and go through portals, so there's this new added element of exploration.
    Also, Dante's cutscenes. I don't think I have to even say anything.
    The Savior fight really didn't bother me. While everyone pans it as "too Sonic Adventure-y", I honestly haven't played those games so I have to sort of take their word for it. The Leviathan boss in DMC3 is even worse imo, even if I agree that's a better game overall.

    Good to to have you back and on this level. The emphasis on the value of a work quite resonated with me. A lot of people seem to “demand excellence” in media, which ends up being more in line with “I want a comfy level of polish so I dont have to move my artistic goal-posts.” But anyone whose spent time in a workshop for any extended period of time knows that the hallmarks of expressive work isnt (usually) the same parts that pertain to evening out an experience. Some folk write characters who grate but are wildly colorful. Others may create works with weaker narratives that can sooth with tone alone. And some devs have a notable confluence of time, budget, etc to shit out this masterpiece. And Eva.
    ...And other people are Kentaro Miura and create hundreds of pages of eye feasts and a glorious storytelling rhythm and will never finish their goddamn story. That’s right I’m calling out my coward friends who wont read Berserk because it doesnt have an ending. How’s that for a pizza topping?

  • @AJMurdoc
    @AJMurdoc 5 років тому +1

    Hey Codex. Glad to have you back. Great video with some genuinely unique and well presented ideas.
    I feel so mixed on DMC4. The depth in combat, performance, and visual style all hold up. But on top of all the issues that have been brought up, I think what really holds me back is the attacks themselves. Before the release of DMC5, everytime I played 4 Dante, I would compare him to 3 Dante. 3 Dante just feels better in his attacks and how "crunchy" they are.
    I understand and empathize with 4 players wanting inertia and reversals, and all that back into 5. And if that combat is enough to satisfy, all the more power to you. It really sucks that 4 was rushed, because I need the product as a whole to satisfy before I go in deeper with the mechanics (cries as a MvC fan).

    I love DMC5. Its amazing. Probably my favorite DMC game but for all the polish the game has it still has some bizarre design oversights that I find baffling the devs missed.
    1. The fact the Deluxe Edition prioritize the mostly joke DE Devil Breakers (yeah Sweet Surrender is pretty useful especially in DMD runs and Gerbera GP01 is probably better than the standard Gerbera) over the standard actually useful Devil Breakers. It just FUCKING pisses me off whenever I see a FUCKING PASTA BREAKER than an actual arm I could or want to use.
    2. The fact you can't change the difficulty setting in the Void without having to select a Mission and changing the difficulty in the Main Mission. Something that should be a quick 1 to 5 sec ordeal becomes a full 5 minute ordeal of having to go between modes and multiple loading screens and speaking of loading screens. Not a major issue really but a very noobish mistake and upsetting design oversight.
    3. ALL THOSE FUCKING LOADING SCREENS!!! JESUS CHRIST!! Some are short like a few seconds but goddamn WTH! Pick a Mission. Loading screen. Cutscene plays. Loading screen. Pick a costume. Loading screen. Go to the Customization menu. Loading screen. Leave. Loading screen. Play the damn Mission. loading screen.
    4. The fact you can't rebind individual d-pads for Nero and V (especially Nero) like you could in 4 but now you must rebind the entire d-pad as one action which is bullshit and I want Break Away to be one button I never have to deal with rather than accidentally pressing it
    5. The camera and lock-on sure needs some polishing. Why don't you "polish" that CAPCOM. Why do my lock-on just up and cancel on me whenever or change targets for NO REASON. I knock an enemy away it changes to someone else. This "dynamic" camera system is becoming more of an hindrance than the static one in 3/4. Also doesn't help using L3 for changing target is fucked because the stick needs to be perfectly still for it to register so I have a hard time changing targets very quickly. Also the fact sometimes I can point my stick to the enemy I want and press lock-on and it chooses the wrong target. There has been times its locked me to an enemy who isn't even on the fucking screen. I've been fucked more the lock-on and the camera than I have in past games. I needs to keep adjusting the camera settings to figure out what the fuck is going on.
    Itsuno and Capcom out here going through the effort of removing tech/abilities that some fans really enjoy (and doesn't affect casual gamers) and coming up with half baked excuses rather than actually "polishing" the game's REAL problems.
    Still my Game of the Year though.

    • @jonnysac77
      @jonnysac77 5 років тому +2

      I don't agree with the first point, all DLC devil breakers have some use, pasta breaker has a better stagger value than punchline making it useful against enemies that are hard to combo especially on DMD, Mega Buster let's you control your height in the air(which is great in a game with very limited aerial movement) better and gives you an amazing side step, sweet surrender is actually kinda bad and I do get frustrated whenever I see it instead of an actually useful arm but overall I'd say all of these arms should've been in the standard edition

    • @DarkEdge1231
      @DarkEdge1231 5 років тому +5

      @@jonnysac77 I don't like how Pasta Breaker changes my DB order. Whenever I make a set it's for a reason or Im planning ahead and rarely do I want to change it. Either way that doesn't excuse prioritizing the standard Devil Breakers over the Deluxe Edition ones. They should at least have equal billing or be totally random. I never see any of the Standard DB on DMD.

    Whelp the reason the game doesn't outright explain Nero's origins is because Devil May Cry is one of those franchises that likes to give out otherwise pivotal information about its games stories, but not in the god damn games themselves. I believe Nero's origins were fully explained in a novel or a manga of some kind. Kind of ridiculous I know, especially considering as far as I can tell there wasn't any reference by Capcom to check out the additional backstory. I love DMC for what it is but it really gets on my nerves when game franchises do that.

    Few minor things I like w/ Nero & Vergil respectively:
    Nero's charge shot recovery frames can be circumvented by doing it right at the end of your airtime, which combined with adding shoot to a trigger (which allows for constant nonstop charging), makes charge shot basically riskless to use
    2) Vergil's summoned sword circle surrounding himself thing (wtf is it called?) can be used to juggle a falling enemy, which leads to a basically free real impact. Also his taunts have hitboxes!!!

Even if it turned out to be a decently good action game (which it was), it wasn't going to be a Devil May Cry game. The blueprint for amazing, expressive action that had been laid in 1, developed in 3, and perfected in 4, was going to be washed away and replaced with something generic for the masses.
