I think it is crazy that people dont love this Lover album, I loved it the moment I hear it back when it first was released. It was beautiful watching you fall in love with it, it does not get a lot of positive reactions normally.
Lover is a great example on why Taylor Swift is such a great storyteller not only inside a single song but also within a single album AND multiple albums. She creates stories that explore many aspects and moments in time within the same experience. Sure, the audience can listen to a single song and take it for what it is, but as a listener you can also take many songs that weave a story that feels coherent and somehow manages to be consistent (almost as if all the songs were written by the same person!) Let me explain what I mean. We have the song Lover, where she sings "my my my, Lover". Obviously, that is a love song about finding the love of your life. Later we have Paper rings, again, a song about being madly in love. After, comes Death by a thousand cuts, where there are also "my my my"s repeated and where she sings "paper cut stings from my paper thin plans". Now, the picture painted is the loss of that love you once thought was the love of your life. As everybody has noticed, she also references red in daylight and even midnights. These parallels create the sense of a universe in which all the listener's experiences can be held and intertwined. Now, I would like to add that while some of these lyrical parallels can occur because she is talking about the same person, this doesn't undermine the talent that comes with knowing how to put the right words in a song. Also, in the example I gave this was not the case, as Taylor wrote death by a thousand cuts inspired by a movie (she said so herself). Here's a ridiculous list I've gathered of some of these little or big connections: [ ] Foolish one: "maybe this is something we'll laugh about over coffee every morning while you're watching the news" & The manuscript: "in the age of him she wished she was thirty and drank coffee every morning in a French press" [ ] I know places: "lose lips sink ships all the damn time, not this time" & this love "in losing grip of sinking ships" [ ] Dress: "you made a mark on me, a golden tattoo" & Dancing with our hands tied: "deep blue but you painted me golden" & daylight "I once believed love would be burning red, but it's golden" [ ] Invisible string: "something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire" & tolerate it: "where's that man who'd threw blankets over my barbed wire?" [ ] Long story short: "my waves meet your shore ever and evermore" & The manuscript: "one last souvenir from my trip to your shores" [ ] Lavender haze & The great war: "somewhere in the haze got a sense I'd been betrayed" [ ] You're on your own, kid (the whole song) & a place in this world (from her debut album) "I'm alone, on my own, and that's all I know" [ ] Would've could've should've & Dear John [ ] You're losing me: "my face was grey but you wouldn't admit that we were sick", "fighting in only your army" & My boy only breaks his favorite toys: "the sickest army doll" [ ] Hits different: "have they come to take me away?" & Fortnight: "I was supposed to be sent away" [ ] Fortnight: "move to Florida" & Florida!!! [ ] TTPD: "tattoed golden retriever" & I can fix him: "good boy, that's right, come close" & The black dog: "tail between your legs you're leaving" [ ] So high school: "brand new, full throttle" & The prophecy "hand on the throttle, thought I caught lightning in a bottle"
I NEVER figured out why she said my in the intro I’ve always thought it was just similar to by. THANK YOU! Love hearing others reactions and how quickly you picked that up
“soon you’ll get better” is a song about her mom who suffers from cancer and the chicks (new name of the dixie chicks) is her mom’s favorite artist so they did the harmonies on the chorus, such a sad song
I am totally shocked, when I saw you were going to react to Lover, I was willing to bet, that you guys would hate it. So glad y'all love it, this album is so underrated. London Boy is one of my favorites, she performed it at the BBC Lounge, and it was so good. Taylor was with Joe Alwyn during this time, Reputation through Midnights Taylor was with Joe. Joe was her London Boy, but on the TTPD, the 5th track is So Long London.
It’s interesting because there’s a lot of Swifty that did not like lover. They only liked to handful songs, but as the years go on lover is starting to become one of the best selling albums. Newer Swifty’s are discovering it and they’re really liking it.
The archer also has to do with her zodiac, Sagittarius, the archer. She has said before that she relates to the archer in terms of how she responds to things in her life: she steps back, assesses, then shoots, instead of shooting from the hip, so to speak.
PLEASE do yourselves a favour. Taylor does acoustic live, stripped versions of Death By A Thousand Cuts, Cornelia Street and Daylight at the Paris City of Lover mini tour just before the pandemic hit. I barely even listen to the studio versions of those songs now because I love the acoustic tracks so much. She also did an acoustic set of The Archer on BBC Live Lounge that gives me the chills every time.
@@sapnasura honestly, I think nearly the entire Reputation album is EXPONENTIALLY better live or acoustic! I really hope she either gets a decent Hip Hop producer for the TV rerecord, or produces them to sound like the live versions. I actually almost hate the studio recording of I Did Something Bad. The witches bridge gets totally lost. Also, the State of Grace acoustic is one of my favourite songs of hers full stop 🥰
lover is probably one of her least widely loved and low-rated albums both within and outside her fandom and it makes me really sad because this was the first album of hers i heard and it's what made me a fan in the first place - i think it's just so wonderful. it makes me really happy that you loved it and understood it in the same way i do because a lot of reactions to this album are more negative so this was really like a breath of fresh air. thank you so much !! i've loved your taylor journey and this has only made it better! also you guys missing some eras tour connections (miss americana and cruel summer specifically lol) and then completely making up some other songs being there that just weren't at all really made me laugh hahaha
It’s incredible that she has released 11 albums, and if I were to ask someone to recommend her best album, I wouldn’t be disappointed with any response.
To me “ME” is a self love anthem! A love letter to all the younger Swiftie’s. Its bubble gum pop but with a really important message if you really look into the lyrics
and not to get too crazy but as someone who voted for the class to watch a taylor swift special educational video in middle school english, "hey kids! spelling is fun!" is actually a vital lyric and super important for the world, unironically!
"Miss Americana & the heartbreak prince" is a song about the political climate in the US, she is using highschool references as a metaphore. I am so surprised so many miss that when they listen. She also wrote another political song called " Only the young '" around the same time.
it's actually pretty amazing seeing other people listen to Lover and love it so much! nowadays people shit on it so much saying that is her worst album. personally it's not my favourite but listening back with you guys makes me appreciate the album way more than I did before
Death by a thousand cuts was an old form of torture and execution. It’s often used now as a turn of phrase meaning something slow and tortuous. So in the song it’s kind of referring to how the end of the relationship is a slow series of painful moments and reminders. Basically, not a clean break. She keeps remembering things and feeling like it’s not really “over”. It’s a sad bop for sure. She has a really great live performance of False God on SNL you guys should check out if you’re interested.
OMG I NEEDED THIS REACTION, all the other reaction channel out there didn't give lover justice calling it her worst album, this was breath of fresh air I love you guys😭😭
It’s interesting that a lot of men seem to be a lot more pulled into Lover than I tend to see with women. I’m not sure what that means but it’s nice to see that this album has its fans!
That’s not true! My sister and I are both women and we love this album to us it’s so overly hated for no reason. My least favorite album of Taylor’s Is Debut and Fearless. Not lover.
I love debut and fearless AND lover hahahaha At this point there are enough Swifties in the world that a bunch of us will claim each one of the 11 albums as their favorite, there are definitely enough of us that none of the eras is ever truly left out. (Except Debut on the eras tour lol)
It's Taylor's most streamed album on Spotify and it's still getting 7M daily streams, it's hardly an underdog album. Just because some Swifties are very vocal about how much they don't like this album doesn't mean it's not getting a lot of love. Same with Reputation, it's divisive online but very successful in the "real world".
My thoughts on Lover before watching this was that it was one of the weaker albums in her discography. But being able to revisit it with you guys has made me realized it's a much better album than I remembered it being. I wouldn't say it's in my personal top 3, but it's definitely a strong album for sure
In a sense, you could say this album as her re-debut, since it's when she got out of her Big Machine Records contract and has full autonomy/free rein of her record (though I never think she's restricted to a sound). There's a genre-blending, see-what-sticks approach to pop (akin to Red) that turns some people off due to what they perceive as cringe, which is ultimately also its strength. It truly reflects how she was feeling at that point in her life.
During afterglow when you said “that’s ari range” is sooo ironic cuz it’s rumored(with clues) that an ari ft. was supposed to happen but the same guy who stole her music was managing ari so he prob didn’t let her😪
Lover was the first album where Taylor sort of opens up about her insecurities and anxieties in a vulnerable way . From then on, we've seen more and more of this on the albums that followed and even some vault songs. I think a healthy solid love, whether it lasts forever or not, helps you introspect and dig deeper into yourself and take a step towards being better as a person. Hence we got Daylight.
SO glad yall loved the album!!! Lover is in my top 3 (1989, Midnights, Lover in that order). people call this her 'flop' era but it was still incredibly successful during its time. The outro to daylight always makes me tear up, the idea that you are what love is just so beautiful to me. Fun fact: the album was going to be called daylight but she switched it to lover!!!
19:00 I'm so glad your dad felt that and was able to describe it so well because that's the entire premise of the song, but it so often gets missed by first time listeners. The driving of the constant palpitating, quickened heartbeat, mostly experience during anxiety attacks or phases. And the lyrics captures the same feeling that the sound evokes, stuck in the smoke, calling out for help, feeling like an open wound that everyone can see through but wondering who would accept you despite it all. Edit: Also! I think the choice of Archer over Predator or Hunter also changes the connotation of the role. For me, predator/hunter brings the association of aggression, intention to harm/destroy. Whereas choosing archer and juxta positioning it with prey, sort of alludes to her being the one that broke or destroy or shot something, intentionally or not, very self-sabotaging versus intentionally harming.
yes to all of this but also I like that she chose the word Archer because it immediately brings to mind a bow and arrow and that makes me think of Cupid! 💘 the terms hunter/predator wouldn't apply to a cupid-like figure necessarily, since they're not hunting the people they shoot, they're striking them with love arrows! I think there were some cool angels in the Me music video 😇🪽 and she had those angel statues in her Lover photoshoots
@@andreadilorenzo4955 I'm not surprised even though it's not my favorite albums of hers i can see why would they love it based on their previous reactions
@@andreadilorenzo4955 I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m so happy to hear that! Lover is one of my favorites from her and my Favoirte Pop album from her. It’s very underrated by her fans.
I’m so happy you liked this album lmao 😭 this is on my top 3 of Taylor’s discography, it’s so beautiful in every aspect and it’s sadly the most hated in the fandom lol
Yay! I'm so happy your review of Lover is so positive. Since it released in 2019 it's been my favorite of all her albums and I was surprised when talking to close friends and other fans of Taylor, to hear that very few of them really enjoy Lover. I, like you two, hear this album as such a optimistic and upbeat album and I always feel better after I listen to it. To each their own, but I wish more people could hear what I hear in the songs, so thank you! :)
I also came here to say this. Lover in Paris is EXCELLENT and the live versions of Cornelia Street & DBATC should be mandatory viewing for all reactors.
It’s funny you say that ‘It’s nice to have a friend’ sounds like a nice song to walk down the aisle to when the song follows two people from childhood to when they get married 🫶🏼 so you were kinda spot on without even knowing!
Wow loved this reaction! Lover is in my top 3 forsure of all TS albums and I often feel like it isn’t one of the more popular ones when people talk about their favorite TS albums.. so this was so lovely to hear!
I’m sure there are other comments of this, but Swifties LOVE the Paris City of Lover versions of a lot of these songs. Her live from Paris Version of Cornelia Street is forever my favorite live performance of hers. Sooooo good
my new favorite taylor reaction from you guys, so often listeners or even diehard fans are so reluctant to let taylor lead them through a journey of love and joy and peace that is this album and I truly don't know why, so having you guys really embrace everything and caring about the meaning of the songs is really fresh and sweet
Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from her seventh studio album Lover (2019). She wrote the song a few months after the 2018 U.S. midterm elections to capture her disillusionment with the American political climate. Written and produced by Swift and Joel Little, "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" is a synth-pop tune with marching band-styled percussion and background cheerleading shouts. It is a protest song that makes use of high-school imagery lyrically to depict the struggles navigating through a flawed system, with allusions to a troubled love story.
Swifties have been saying that Lover is for the girlies, and it is, and I am actually in awe that you guys really like and get it! You passed the girlie vibe check. Thank you so much for reacting to Taylor's album
Lover was the album that turned me into a Swiftie and it is still one of my favourite works by her (alongside Evermore and Midnights). Funnily, London Boy is in my top 3 of off this album. My friend also disliked the studio version and then, she had a change of heart when I showed her Taylor's performance of it at the BBC live. Tay's little choreo, facial expressions, and the live band can truly shift your perspective. It's such a feel good song with a fun rhyme scheme and great rhythm. I also usually lean towards more lyrically deep stuff. But this track still has good songwriting, it's just more melody rather than lyric-focused. I love how you immediately noticed 'arrowhead' in Cornelia Street and immediately commented on it. I think the whole fandom had a bit of a laugh at this unintentional "easter egg" that even Taylor didn't know she had planted. Also how did you notice that sound of the door at the end of Cornelia street?! such a good catch! I heard it a million times and never realised it was a door... i feel like an idiot now. Maybe i never processed it because I rushed to re-start the song 😂 Another great catch of yours was the repeated 'my my my' harmonies in the bridge of 1000 cuts. Some fans have also noticed that this repeated 'my' might be a reference to the 'my, my my... lover' from the song Lover, but the phrase is unfinished because the couple in 1000 cuts broke up. Anyways, thanks for such a great reaction, as always, I enjoyed watching you a whole lot and it warms my heart to see such a loving family bond. I could never talk to my parents about music in this way. it's lovely how open the both of you can be about your experiences and emotions.
I remember this album coming out the summer before the pandemic. It got so much hate by critics and still does by the fandom, but I honestly thought it was the perfect dreamy blend of love and sadness, like the album colours of pink and blue. It was so sad that Lover fest got cancelled. Cornelia Street dethroned All too well as my favourite then and there and is still my number 1 song, which i was fortunate enough that she played it at my Eras tour date. In the middle of summer, at sunset, tearing up as she played on piano. It was like something healed then and there. Glad someone actually loves this album too!
This album is massively underrated. It’s an easy top 5 for me. It’s so experimental and dynamic. It really benefits from repeat listens too. Lyrically stunning as well Also, Me! isn’t on the eras tour setlist because “fans” mocked her mercilessly for it, because apparently they’re allergic to fun and camp. They even bullied her into removing “hey kids, spelling is fun!” from the lyrics. So thank you for giving the song its flowers! I personally love it and it’s nice to see someone actually giving it a thoughtful analysis
I am once again watching the same video on UA-cam that I’ve already watched twice on Patreon. I’m so happy you loved this one!!! It’s my favourite Taylor album but it’s kinda polarizing among fans for some reason. I totally agree that if someone asked me who Taylor Swift is, this is the album I’d show them. (not that anyone would ever ask that lol)
Love your reactions to a lot of these albums and also love the Steinway St. reference. I grew up on 49th St. and you brought back all my childhood memories of walking Steinway. LFGM!!
I love the parallel in Daylight when she says, "I once believed love would be burning red, but it's golden" - a reference to what she sang in Red, the song. What a lovely video, guys! I didn’t love this album as much in 2019 as I do now. For me, her best ✨ pop ✨ album is 1989, but Lover is great and very mature, as you guys pointed out so well. It’s funny how most fans wouldn’t put this one in their top 3, but people in general love it. My husband, who’s listened to all her albums (not a Swiftie like me), says that after Folklore, Lover is his favorite one.
Daylight is such a satisfying end to this album, with her saying she’s seeing daylight with this person she loves. In the prologue of Red (original version), she said that she dreams of a love that shines like starlight (a reference also to one song from that album). Hearing Daylight for the first time made me feel happy for her cause she found the love she was looking for, and it’s even brighter and better than what she wanted to.
@@Jess-y7c oh I don't hate either but it's definitely not one of my favs singles she's released, it's not even one of my favs on this album but I agree it's overhated
This is my favorite album I always hear that it’s not people favorite but when I first listen to it, I like it from beginning to finish, that doesn’t usually happen with Taylor albums you always need a couple listens to catch on the lyrics but this ✨

Yesss!!!
The BBC live lounge is one of my favorite things ever. Her cover of Can't Stop Loving You is something else.
lover is probably one of her least widely loved and low-rated albums both within and outside her fandom and it makes me really sad because this was the first album of hers i heard and it's what made me a fan in the first place - i think it's just so wonderful. it makes me really happy that you loved it and understood it in the same way i do because a lot of reactions to this album are more negative so this was really like a breath of fresh air. thank you so much !! i've loved your taylor journey and this has only made it better!
also you guys missing some eras tour connections (miss americana and cruel summer specifically lol) and then completely making up some other songs being there that just weren't at all really made me laugh hahaha
Ahhhhh your dad's storytelling bout him and your mom expecting to see each other AAAAAAA ❤❤❤❤

My surprise songs where Slut!×False God it was insane! 😭

It very much is The Dixie chicks on "Soon you´ll get better" they changed their name to just "The Chicks"

Exactly but Me is still a good song for any age really and I think it’s so overly hated for no reason.
@@Jess-y7c yes!
and not to get too crazy but as someone who voted for the class to watch a taylor swift special educational video in middle school english, "hey kids! spelling is fun!" is actually a vital lyric and super important for the world, unironically!
I love love this Album!!! How do people say this is her least best album!? Highly Underrated
"Miss Americana & the heartbreak prince" is a song about the political climate in the US, she is using highschool references as a metaphore. I am so surprised so many miss that when they listen. She also wrote another political song called " Only the young '" around the same time.
I've listened to it a ton but I didn't know it was about politics until someone told me last week! It makes so much sense now 😅
it's actually pretty amazing seeing other people listen to Lover and love it so much! nowadays people shit on it so much saying that is her worst album. personally it's not my favourite but listening back with you guys makes me appreciate the album way more than I did before
Death by a thousand cuts was an old form of torture and execution.
36:50 "Who's that?" "Charles?" Yep, Charles Minor from The Office aka Idris Alba!
OMG I NEEDED THIS REACTION, all the other reaction channel out there didn't give lover justice calling it her worst album, this was breath of fresh air I love you guys😭😭
15:45 considering that she has also mimicked John Mayer’s style at times when making a point about him, that may have been purposeful.
You forgot "All of the girls you loved before"
Thisss
yes! one of my favs from lover
Love this bonus track
I wish Need was released. I LOVE that song even more than all the girls. 💔
it’s not officially on the album
It’s interesting that a lot of men seem to be a lot more pulled into Lover than I tend to see with women. I’m not sure what that means but it’s nice to see that this album has its fans!
That’s not true! My sister and I are both women and we love this album to us it’s so overly hated for no reason. My least favorite album of Taylor’s Is Debut and Fearless. Not lover.
I love debut and fearless AND lover hahahaha
At this point there are enough Swifties in the world that a bunch of us will claim each one of the 11 albums as their favorite, there are definitely enough of us that none of the eras is ever truly left out.
(Except Debut on the eras tour lol)
i observed this also
It's Taylor's most streamed album on Spotify and it's still getting 7M daily streams, it's hardly an underdog album. Just because some Swifties are very vocal about how much they don't like this album doesn't mean it's not getting a lot of love. Same with Reputation, it's divisive online but very successful in the "real world".
I LOVE that you love lover, it's so underrated!! One of my alltime favorites, especially Daytime!
My thoughts on Lover before watching this was that it was one of the weaker albums in her discography. But being able to revisit it with you guys has made me realized it's a much better album than I remembered it being. I wouldn't say it's in my personal top 3, but it's definitely a strong album for sure
have you ever heard the unreleased song Need? I love that song, I wish she'd release it
Being honest, I still think it’s her weakest album… but as an album itself it’s pretty strong… she’s just so good all her albums are strong
@@sebastianledesma8405Lover charts extremely well and it’s wild how people discount it
Fun fact: I Forgot That He Existed is kind of a sign off to the Reputation era and all that drama lol
During afterglow when you said “that’s ari range” is sooo ironic cuz it’s rumored(with clues) that an ari ft. was supposed to happen but the same guy who stole her music was managing ari so he prob didn’t let her😪
👀 That's 🫖.
Fun fact!! The places mentioned in London Boy form a heart on the map iirc!
seriously?
@@metoziiiit’s true lol

I think that’s only on Patreon.
I always say how versatile Lover is for Taylor. It just got everything, from pop to ballad but still able to fit with the album theme.
I held my breath at the beginning of Paper Rings, you either love it or hate it 😅 I’m so glad you loved it!
the terms hunter/predator wouldn't apply to a cupid-like figure necessarily, since they're not hunting the people they shoot, they're striking them with love arrows!
I think there were some cool angels in the Me music video 😇🪽 and she had those angel statues in her Lover photoshoots

you should check the live version of the album in paris is fantastic !
Yes please !!
Omg Yes
I also came here to say this. Lover in Paris is EXCELLENT and the live versions of Cornelia Street & DBATC should be mandatory viewing for all reactors.

It’s funny you say that ‘It’s nice to have a friend’ sounds like a nice song to walk down the aisle to when the song follows two people from childhood to when they get married 🫶🏼 so you were kinda spot on without even knowing!
Thank you for showing love to this album! I feel like a lot of fans don’t appreciate it the way it deserves, loved the react 💗

I’m sure there are other comments of this, but Swifties LOVE the Paris City of Lover versions of a lot of these songs. Her live from Paris Version of Cornelia Street is forever my favorite live performance of hers. Sooooo good
i’m shocked you guys loved this so much but so glad
my new favorite taylor reaction from you guys, so often listeners or even diehard fans are so reluctant to let taylor lead them through a journey of love and joy and peace that is this album and I truly don't know why, so having you guys really embrace everything and caring about the meaning of the songs is really fresh and sweet

I feel the same way about this album, it's one of my favorites.
You guys are so wholesome❤ and have great musical perspectives. New subscriber!
Thanks so much! 👊🏼
Maybe i never processed it because I rushed to re-start the song 😂
Another great catch of yours was the repeated 'my my my' harmonies in the bridge of 1000 cuts.
It is the Dixie chicks, her mother loves them

Arrowhead! 😂 I am so glad y’all loved this one! It has a reputation as her “worst” album but it’s my favorite!
at 9:13 Cruel Summer just took this man back in time, I love it
If you connect all the locations mentioned in London Boy they make a heart 🥲
OMG REALLY?!?!?!
everything y’all said is the reason why this is my fav taylor album😭 i love it sm
One more song that is a bonus on this album is called “All of the Girls You’ve Loved Before.” You two should give that one a listen too.
Lyrically stunning as well
Also, Me! isn’t on the eras tour setlist because “fans” mocked her mercilessly for it, because apparently they’re allergic to fun and camp.
Aaa thank you for reacting to this album and loving it!
Afterglow and it's nice to have a friend appreciation in this😭💓👏 it is always my songs!!!
I hope I can listen to daylight for the first time again.
YESSSSSS😢
Daylight is such a satisfying end to this album, with her saying she’s seeing daylight with this person she loves.
In the prologue of Red (original version), she said that she dreams of a love that shines like starlight (a reference also to one song from that album). Hearing Daylight for the first time made me feel happy for her cause she found the love she was looking for, and it’s even brighter and better than what she wanted to.
and i still can't comprehend why Lover is her most hated album among swifties.
51:28 actually me! Is not on the eras tour cause most swifties hate that song as a single so instead she chose cruel summer
Me Is So Underrated!! And I definitely don’t hate that song.
@@Jess-y7c oh I don't hate either but it's definitely not one of my favs singles she's released, it's not even one of my favs on this album but I agree it's overhated
i can’t believe people call this her worst album. it’s for sure in my top 5.
This is my favorite album I always hear that it’s not people favorite but when I first listen to it, I like it from beginning to finish, that doesn’t usually happen with Taylor albums you always need a couple listens to catch on the lyrics but this ✨
