    I'm surprised they didn't pick up on the fact that Hohenheim purposely asked Pinako about the body the brothers transmuted, after seeing the dog stop barking at him, and go into the hallway, (He knew Ed was there and would hear) knowing Ed would dig it up, and come to the conclusion that what they attempted was impossible, thus giving them closure. He *does* care about them, and that one simple implication gave them hope again.

    I think they are kind of missing the point with Al. He flat out can't sleep meaning he spends every night alone with his thoughts while Ed sleeps, he can't feel anything because he doesn't have skin as was mentioned in an earlier episode when he said he couldn't feel the rain on his face. He can't eat because he doesn't have a stomach. He clanks when he moves. And through all of this he's stuck watching other people have all these experiences and sensations that he can't have. Watching Ed enjoying a meal, seeing people around him feel the rain on their skin, watching Ed sleep while he just has to sit there or wander around until morning.
    His entire existence is a constant reminder that he isn't truly human mixed with the constant fear that he might never be human again and he can't even escape it because he can't go to sleep and shut off the thoughts even for a brief time. Just imagine your worst fear in the world and everything around you is constantly reminding you of it and you have no way to ever shut those thoughts off and this lasts for years. That is what Al is going through. That he is why it's hard for him.

  • @reader111089
    @reader111089 7 років тому +326

    The whole sleep discussion really ties back to why Ed was so angry at Greed when he said he was jealous of Al.
    It's not that Al doesn't NEED to sleep, eat, use the bathroom, or jerk off. It's that Al CAN'T eat, or sleep, or use the bathroom, or jerk off. No matter how much he may want to do all those normal human functions, they are denied to him. It's like the torment of Tantalus. I think that Calvin was trying to say something similar.

    • @sophiefilo16

      ...I...don't think jerking off is on the same level of importance as sleeping and eating...

    • @sophiefilo16
      @sophiefilo16 6 років тому +21

      Umm, yes, they totally do. A person who does not receive enough sleep or food during prime developing years can be screwed up for life, mentally and physically. However, jerking off isn't essential to life. Just think about asexuals, people who go through puberty incredibly late, people who _can't_ masturbate due to some medical condition, people who are under immense cultural or religious pressure to not have any sort of sexual activity, certain autistics who are too disgusted by the idea, people who were sexually abused and thus are too traumatized to touch themselves, etc. Masturbating is nowhere near as important as _food_ and _sleep_ are. You literally _cannot live_ without them...

    • @sophiefilo16
      @sophiefilo16 6 років тому +21

      As you said, Al lost his body before puberty. Therefore, masturbating doesn't matter to him at all. He's still a kid. He *has* no sexuality because he has no body. When Al is alone watching everyone else sleep, I'm sure he is not thinking, "man, I wish I had a body so I could jerk off". Without a body, there's no sexual tension or urges. Any intimacy Al would seek would be purely emotional. After all, he can't miss masturbating if he's never done it (assuming he hasn't, but he was 10 after all, so maybe). That's like missing living under water when you've lived on land your entire life.
      In any case, Al is understandably miserable in his condition for a plethora of reasons. Let's just leave it at that...

    Hohenhiem talked rudely to Edward in front of the grave because he was somewhat pissed too. When he came back home ,found his wife dead , saw his burned house where his best memories were formed, learned about how Ed and Al were so reckless to commit a taboo, and was surely in great pain.
    But then he realised his fault too and saw things from Ed's perspective and started blaming himself.

  • @0t4ku426
    @0t4ku426 7 років тому +94

    I think what Calvin was getting across is that "not having to sleep" vs. "not able to sleep" are two different things. In this case, Al has both: he's doesn't have to sleep because he doesn't have body functions to necessitate it, and he's not able to for the same reasons. The way I see it is that it's kind of like being immortal and being alone. Remember that Al is a kid; being alone is a terrifying thing for kids.

    • @lazyshoggy
      @lazyshoggy 5 років тому +18

      They is another effect with the lack of sleep : Al can't stop thinking. Sleep isn't just for the physical fatigue, it is for the nervous and emotional ones as well. When someone suffers a trauma that makes constantly him mull over he still can finally take a break while sleeping. I just can't imagine how were the first weeks or months after the failed transmutation for Al, reliving what happened or wondering what mistakes they made again and again, with no one to keep his mind off it 8h a day.
      And at that time with no computer or TV or even habits of people to stay awake a part of the night there is little he can do to spend the time apart than reading. Most of the time we see him keeping Ed company at night, so he stays in the dark just waiting that his brother wakes up. No wonder that he feels so lonely ...

    One of the reasons I enjoy the reveal about what Ed and Al actually transmuted (aside from the fact that it solidifies more about how alchemy works and ties into what we already know), is that it fits into a larger theme that carries through the show: that it is possible to take something painful and traumatic and turn it into something that makes you stronger or gives you hope.

      The only tragedy I see is that they failed to being back their mom and lost their bodies. I don't get why they make a big deal of it being her or not. I mean, it would suck if it was her and she couldn't be normal again, but it's a failure nonetheless.

    • @Zeekay980

      It is less tragic. They blamed themselves for failing the transmutation. They, the Elrics and Izumi, thought that if they had just done more work they could have done it right. It was never possible in the first place. They didn't fail because of anything they did. That combined with the fact that they didn't cause their loved ones to suffer a second time removed a lot of guilt they felt over the situation.

      I'd say that gave Ed, Al, and Izumi more hope than tragedy. They had to deal with the trauma and tragedy of assuming they were *this* close to bringing their loved ones back to life only to have them suffer and die a second time right before their eyes, as a monster. The regret of thinking that if they had just tried a little harder or made sure there wasn't a single misstep in their calculations, that it would've worked.
      But finding out that the body they brought back wasn't even a living person eased a lot of that guilt and regret. They now know it's not that they were a slight mistake away from succeeding, it's that what they did was never possible in the first place, and that they didn't tarnish the bodies and souls of their dead loved ones. It's a hell of a lot easier than coping with the fact that they're dead and will always stay dead.

    • @biocapsule7311
      @biocapsule7311 7 років тому +5

      You misunderstood... the tragedy is for those who read the story, for the character, it's closure & not hope either. 'Tragedy' isn't really a word you use to describe something that happen to you personally, it's something you use about others. The crew said it lessen the tragedy... but it doesn't really do that, since it still happened. It however opens a way to closure for them.
      And not really about hope either. Since that imply there's something they can do about it... there isn't. It's about moving forward, so it's about closure, having closure doesn't make a situation less tragic.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 3 роки тому

      @@biocapsule7311 Which isn't a bad thing at all. it not being as tragic is actually a good/positive thing because they were doing something they didn't know was possible, after they learned that they gave up for no reason, they can find something positive again and return to give them hope to try to fix everything they did after learning the "truth" of the situation.
      They don't need to feel more "guilty".for the story to work, they just need knowledge/ "truth" to realize they and pick themselves if they did more research on the subject regardless if it couldn't.
      It was hopeful scene because of it and ADDS to the story that they can always pick themselves back up again which is a great message for the story/audience.
      It IS about hope but moving forward.

    Remember that the blue print of a body is DNA. Genetics isn't exactly a well-known scientific field in this world. They use alchemy to fuse life form together as their equivalent of genetic engineering. it's pretty brute force instead of scientific. So, making a body for someone who doesn't exist with nothing but the raw chemical ingredients and no genetic blueprint means they basically created something that couldn't have survived birth, because they just assembled the body through brute force without worrying about how all the sequences go together. It was riddled with lethal anatomical defects.
    And gene sequences determine how traits such as hair color are expressed.

    I feel like Eric was over analyzing the situation a bit when it came to making trying to transmute someone to bring them back to life. The hair color and gender were not correct BECAUSE it can't be done. NOTHING Ed and Al did or tried to do would have worked to make the hair, eyes and gender match what their mom's had been. And there was no way via alchemy or the chemistry involved that would have made it possible to try and make the body they made match all those things. All that stuff, the hair color, eye color and gender, were all random, not chosen by Ed and Al or able to be predicted by them via alchemy.
    The body they made moved for a bit because Al's soul bonded to it before being rejected and being pulled back into the portal where his real body is. Al is still alive, not dead, which is why Ed was able to pull his soul back out of the portal again by sacrificing his arm. But someone who is dead, like their mom? You can't EVER get their soul back, no matter what you may try.

      To be fair, Calvin guessing the entire country was a transmutation circle was foreshadowed since episode 1, when Isaac the Ice Alchemist confirmed the entire city was a transmutation circle when he took advantage of Central's shape to freeze Central Command over. Aaron mentioned the city was a circle because of this.
      And Hughes basically figured out the entire country was a circle, too, albeit it didn't reveal it directly and left his revelation vague so we don't know exactly what he found out since the map he was drawing on was obscured by the different camera angles of him drawing on it and connecting the dots for the sake of suspense.
      But a full map of Amestris is shown later, notably in the episode Ed first meets Ling and they discuss Amestris's history, so it looking like a perfect circle compared to all the other countries does look suspicious.

    honestly this was the episode that kept me thinking over and over about what actually happened when they did human transmutation, ive watched this show over 5-10 times, and the original more or less 4 times, And i though about it, they were basically transmuting a new body with all those materials, but like the explanation said, you cant bring back a soul thats already dead, so the body they made basically needed a new soul in which al's was used but the body rejected the soul and it was a failed transmutation.
    Now for them to make a new body, another one must be sacrificed because of the law of equivalent exchange, which is why al's body was being deconstructed in order for the new one carrying both al and ed's DNA to be constructed which is mainly why al lost his body and why al's soul was placed in the supposedly new one. Just as Ed says in episode 26, because he was transmuting himself, an already living being and not creating a new body, he was sucessful.
    Now human transmutation is a taboo, just like murder, it is something everyone knows and understands that it should not be done because of human morals, but it is still possible to do, wether or not you do it that is up to you. Now in my opinion the transmuation rebounded because IT IS A FAILED transmutation, Ed lost his leg because the transmutation was incomplete not because HT is a taboo. Noone has ever done a completely sucessful human transmutation because its not something humans know or are knowledgeable of.
    The punishment for the taboo in my opinion is what gets taken from you, just as father says in the later episodes, whatever The truth takes from you is carefully chosen to humiliate humans and to put them in their place, Ed didnt necessarily lost his legs because he performed the taboo he lost it because of a failed/incomplete transmutation.

    The thingg the boys created was a failed homunculus, without the philosopher's Stone the homunculus couldn't survive so when they tried to create it they didn't bring back their mother they were basically created entirely new life but something like human life is immeasurable or the very least the price is so steep that it's impossible for a single human to perform so the transmutation was a failure. Also the reason Edward started hurting is because he mentioned earlier the weather was changing because of the metal in his body with the temperature and the are becoming charged with energy as a result of the storm it caused him incredible muscle pains.

    @josephine4s 7 років тому +4

    The interesting thing about philosopher stones, I don't think you can actually make a perfect one; a perfect one would have truly limitless, infinite power. The ones the homunculi have are just high quality

  • @kana22693
    @kana22693 7 років тому

    I think those chemicals they used were transmuted into an incomplete artificial human body aka a homunculus, since they also mixed in two drops of their own blood and all those chemicals were measured to be more than enough for an adult, they essentially created an adult which was also their inbred offspring. The body lacked a soul and Al lacked a body so he was placed inside that body, then the body immediately started dying since it was incomplete and Ed paid with his arm to transfer Al to a suit of armor. If he would've waited longer I suspect the price would've been much higher than an arm, Ed would've probably died bringing Al's soul back.

    my understanding of the portal was always it was an in-between world where alchemist drew their power. The kicker was that alchemist only drew small amounts of power from this inbetween world in accordance with what the white smiling guy would dictate. So, its like a giant court room/ lobby for alchemy powers.

    I mean, they put forth their best effort, but basically they gathered the basic materials for a human, and made a transmutation circle that would hopefully bring forth a human with their Mom's soul (which they assumed would look like her. Also, they had gathered the AVERAGE amount of each substance for an adult human, so if they did succed, would their mom be shorter than she had been, have a higher bone density?

  • @IMVADER2

    ((Spoilers))All the boys' tragedy, from a technical standpoint, was body transfer. They made a body, and a soul was transferred from Al to go in there. Nothing was there in equivalent exchange to say that it was their mother. The puzzle makes sense once you have all the information, and they were just over confident kids thinking they knew what they were doing.
    And to think, their world would be ruined if they never did that one action.

    also why did they bother measuring the femur of the skeleton as it was more then clear that the bones of that skeleton weren't exactly reliable seeing as how some of the ribs looked large enough to be from a cow as well as the other femur being both curved and half the length of the one they measured

    • @NopeJustPatrick
      @NopeJustPatrick 6 років тому

      *Jack McDonald* - The femur was one of the more complete bones left over from the failed transmutation, and(If I'm remembering correctly) femur length is a common indicator of gender in archeology.

    Are the bodies weird just because of the rebound? That's what I always assumed anyways. I can also see why the not-Trisha would be male if it was sort of recreating Al's body in some form, but why was Izumi's so different from her and Sig? If we ignore the theory that Al had an effect on the body they transmuted, then maybe the rebound just created the exact inverse of what they were trying to obtain in some messed up form of equivalent exchange.

    But one thing that the show never seems to cover is, whether he needs to sleep or not aside, the effect that constant unending consciousness would have on a human mind.

    26:00 I believe that if a soul is real, the only scientifically possible explanation would be the quantum processes that occurs in our brain..... It's suppose to be impossible to predict some of its outcomes, because they rely on probability rather than actual physical data, so in a way they can't be measured (in other words, a soul would be the capacity of the brain to make choices).
