I actually checked the episodes a while back. If i remember correctly, in DBZ, it took about 8 episodes for the whole 5 minutes. That's still a lot of episodes for 5 minutes.
In DB Kai, it took 3-5 episodes. It took 3 episodes for the 5 minutes. The attack itself was done at the end of an episode. The explosion was shown again at the start of a different episode. If you count the attack and the aftermath, it took 5 episodes in Kai.
Hieillua Watching that part of Super I literally thought that somebody told Toriyama "Hey, I bet you can't make anything more ridiculous than those 5 minutes on Namek" and Toriyama replied: "Hold my beer" xD
An additional note, Father's original plan wasn't contingent on the brothers' availability. Which was why Scar was a problem for them at the start. Any & every State Alchemist was suppose to be valid candidate when the times comes, which was part of the reason the institution was established. They hope more people will open the gate but they already planned for the worst with the Homunculi. Scar became a problem by accident when he started killing off State Alchemist.
And simply think of the stones as the shields of a starship... once it's depleted, they die with one mortal hit, they didn't give Envy that fatal blow.
I don't know ... Amestris is know to be a great alchemical power, and Scar killed maybe 20 state alchemists. There probably were enough left they could have used if they needed to (at worst they could call back the ones who resigned after the civil war). If it was that easy they just could have locked the remaining alchemists needed until the day of reckoning, for their own safety of course. And they could have get rid of Ed, Al and Mustang who proved themselves to be more and more annoying. The fact is they more or less know how to open the portal but more important, they have no clue what makes an alchemist strong enough to see the truth AND to come back alive. When Mustang get caught, just before his talk with Bradley, you can see the single staff worrying about which alchemist could manage to do it, quoting Marcoh and Kimblee.
The problem with the ones only candidate is that they don't know how many of them 1. will be skilled enough to perform a human transmutation, 2. will die trying to open the gate before they have a viable sacrifice, and 3. will perform it willingly (homonculi can force them to do it but it is dangerous for them). It is complicated enough for 1 candidate in 5, so they need all the sacrifices they can have.
The status of state alchemist was created to attract the most skilled alchemists (so they could have money and means for their researches) and the army could know who was a sacrifice and who could make a good candidate (and keep an eye on them), but it doesn't mean that every one of them was able to do it. If it was the case, the homonculi had no reasons to let the heroes live.
And this is one of the many reasons Hohenheim is my favourite character. He's so badass with alchemy and once you've learned his story, he just becomes so amazing. Early on in the series, I thought he was just a dead beat dad. I was horribly wrong.
Isn't that the point? We first see him through the eyes of Ed, which is why he looks like a cold, villanous, distant and absent guy, then we see his own point of view, which is wildly different.
The 'brother' discussion: I think it's a translation thing. In Japan, it's considered a sign of respect to use an honorific title instead of a name for an elder, like 'onii-sama' or 'onii-san,' which translates to 'older brother.' Ed, being the elder, just uses Alphonse's name instead.
That's the same in South Asia and many other Asian countries
Same with the term 'Aniki'.

It's the same as using titles instead of names for your parents and grandparents in English, they just include older siblings in that too.
+blackcat19 It's the difference between a literal translation and a cultural translation. In the literal translation they translate it almost word by word, not caring about the differences in culture. In the cultural one they change certain expressions/idioms to fit the culture of the country it's getting translated for.

If you pay attention, all homunculi die in a way that's ironic or even "poetic justice" related to the capital sin they represent. It's really clever.
Can you give examples? I'm curious on that thinking, like I see that case with Gluttony and Greed, but how's something like Lust's death ironic?
@@Tayvin4042 This one is probably the least clean cut, but part of the facade that Mustang creates of himself is that of a womanizer. It's not very heavy handed but I think someone even calls him one at some point.
@@Tayvin4042 I always saw it as her being consumed by a different, more literal kind of fiery passion. Not to mention, Sam Rozier is right; Mustang is commonly seen as a womanizer--he collects his information through Madam Christmas' women (who appear to be like a brothel of sorts), his code over the phone is always him chatting women up, etc. So Lust is consumed by the fiery passion of a womanizer.
@@samrozier891 Two years late, but Lust isn't just sexual (at least in terms of the manga). Her sin also is about blood lust. She's the only Homunculus who literally does not care about the sacrifices and goes out of her way to kill and destroy. On the other hand, Roy is calm and calculating, we'll see during the coup that he goes out of his way no to kill. Even during Ishval, it wasn't like he enjoyed being a mass murderer. The only time we see him lose control is when he finally confronts Hughes' killer and even then he is nullified by Ed and Hawkeye. So on one hand, yeah its about the womanizer persona he puts on and him defeating Lust, but on the other, it's about a desire for violence and bloodshed. He has no desire for it while she lives for it.
In English, there are no honorifics for blood relatives that are used in the modern day but many Asian cultures have a very wide variety, which is used in place of names. We do not call our elders, whether related or strangers by their names. Elder brothers and sisters are never called by their names. It is considered overwhelmingly rude. The reverse, however, has exceptions. Elders do call younger acquaintances by their names or by honorifics that are considered "loving".
In most of Anime, you will find elder siblings using -chan, which it is used for "cutesy" younglings. Whereas young ones will call their elder brothers and sisters as O-Nii-san (Respected-brother-sir) and O-Nee(pronounced Ney)-san (Respected-sister-ma'am).
Thus, it is hard to translate such social dynamics and often Westerners find it unusual. By that same rule, we too find Western custom of using names irrespective of age and relation weird.

It's been a while but my assumption with Envy's true form was that he was reduced to just one soul, maybe "his" if you want to look at it that way. Since a Homunculus basically IS their Philosopher's Stone he would die like Lust without it, it's just so weakened that he can't make a proper body or do anything useful like before.

Them being Hohenhimes sons does not mean anything as far as them being sacrifices goes. As far as sacrifices go you need to be someone who saw the truth. Sounds simple enough but just seeing the truth is dangerous. The huge influx of information is enough to break most people. In other words people who saw the truth and have a strong enough will to not go insane/die can become sacrifices.
Al calls Ed brother because in japanese younger brothers refer to their older siblings by their title when speaking to them as respect, while older siblings can just stick to using normal name. the englsih dub wanted to reflect that linguistic dynamic so it keeps it in. this is also why Ed and Al call izumi curtis teacher, because they refer to her as sensei in japanese.
Just a quick thing - though it's pretty early, I highly recommend that you guys watch the 3-part finale in one sitting. You can release the videos to fit the schedule, but the finale really needs to be watched as a movie to be fully appreciated :

The brother thing is because in the original japanese Al call Ed "Nii-san" which is a japanese honorific for older brother.

Qhen i would call my siblibling "brother" or "sister" it means its either an emergancy or I need their attention immediately. Since they are in constant danger and since al is the younger one i can see how he always says "brother" instead of ed. I think Al only calls Ed "Ed" when hes mad or needs Ed to listen.

The English language is probably the only language which doesn't have a way to refer to your elder siblings in a respectful manner. In Japan you refer to your brother and sister as that, in many other languages it is the same such as in Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. There are often multiple terms to signal level of respect or elderness.

The homunculi being like second generation clones of Hohenheim sort of reminds of Fallout 4, where all the Gen 3 synths are basically clones of the player character's son. I just thought of that.

About that "brother" thing: that's what happens if you watch English dub. It's not natural in English language. If I were to translate it, I'd go for "Ed"/"Edward". The only problem with this is lip movement. It's way easier to deal with it in manga.
The anime is obviously Japanese, and originally dubbed in Japanese. So even though FMA takes place in a world resembling Europe, it's impossible for the creators to avoid some "Japaneseness", especially in the language. You see, in Japan younger siblings call the older ones by "(big) brother/sister" to indicate their position in hierarchy (which is a big deal in Japanese society).

Al says brother because Japanese people have a specific word for "big brother", "nii-san". Same with many Asian countries (like Filipino, Shane would know, has the word "Kuya" for "big brother"). It's kind of awkward to say "big brother" all the time so they just shorten it to "brother".

+IndianTelephone idk what this guy is talking about when he said disappointing but it's a really good show. It's unique with amazing animation that still holds up or looks than some new anime. It's episodic so it's not your typical straightforward story but there is an overarching storyline.

Ahsaan Baig HXH is not nearly as convoluted as FMAB (I'm not saying that one is better than the other though). It's really easy to follow.

I'm pretty sure Calvin knows what's going to happen already. I don't know why it irks me but he has corrected the other guys multiple times. When Eric is talking about the sacrifices Calvin blurted out, "well because they have seen the truth which is why they are after izumi Curtis as well." There is know way he figured out why they are the sacrifices. Plus at this point she is only a potential sacrifice. But whatever I'm still going to keep watching.
