Final Account There is a lot of information to remember.
Gluttony is Father's failed attempt to reach the Portal of Truth without sacrificing anything. He thought he could do it the easy way and that's why it's a sin.
Envy is Father's failed attempt to understand humans. You will see why he has trouble with that in a future episode. He hoped Envy could learn from them, but instead Envy resents humanity because he can't understand our emotions and blames his failure on us. If Envy hadn't failed, maybe Father would have more empathy.
Lust is Father's failed attempt to control humans through manipulation. She works on weak men like Father Cornello, but it isn't enough.
Wrath is Father's successful attempt to control humans through fear and force. Wrath is the most refined and well thought out homunculus.
Greed is Father's successful/failed attempt to slough off his unwanted avarice. He saw his greed as a defect and so removed it from himself, he became more patient and careful as a result, but lost desire and passion as a a consequence.
You haven't met Pride or Sloth yet, so I won't say anything about them.
Father is such a butthole.
Ironically, the most successful Homunculus is the one made from an existing human.

To me, so much of the humor works because it feels like either A, what I would be thinking in that particular situation (because sometimes in ridiculous/scary situations, all you can do is laugh at them) and B, the kind of comments I'd be making as an audience member or a fan, if the show didn't already make them for me. A lot of the jokes feel like ones fans would make, and to me at least it gives a sense that Hiromu Arakawa has a good understanding of her audience, as well as what it's like to be a fan of something. For example, one of her 'author's note' style comics in the manga shows her drunkenly asking "WHY WOULD PADME FALL FOR ANAKIN?". To me the humor has always felt very well balanced, with a few exceptions. The one with May here does feel a little off, but honestly it's no less realistic than anything involving her little panda.
Timely jokes that don't drag on so you can get back to the seriousness are a classic.
The only jokes that really drag it down are the short jokes

They each want the secret of immortality to give to the emperor to gain his favor.
They are both children of the emperor. The emperor takes a daughter from each clan chief as his wife.
Ling is the 12th son & May is the 17th daughter of the emperor. They are half-siblings.

India Wilson They are still supposed to be artificial humans. Him being a leach is even more confusing now that I think about it.
It really kind of makes perfect sense when you consider that form is just an amalgam of all of the souls that comprise Envy's inner being. Not to mention they're imperfect copies of humans constructed of singular aspects of human nature in a 'pure' form, with Envy being Envy, which is often depicted as a very parasitic trait.
All the Homunculi have aspects to themselves that make them bastardized mockeries of true humans. Lust has sharpened extending fingers, Greed had a second layer of skin complete with claws and serrated teeth, Gluttony has a toothed inter-dimensional rift with an eye in the center as a stomach, Sloth and Pride doesnt take much to think about their falsity when you actually just look at them, etc. Only Wrath ignores this.
Each Homunculi is also to some extent Father's failed attempts at understanding or controlling humans in their entirety. Envy is a failure to understand and mimic human form apparently, even further warped by Envy resenting the very humans he mimics. Again, Wrath is the most refined and newest model of the Homunculi, and thus shows the closest thing to successful understanding of an aspect of humans, or in Wrath's case how to control them.
"their bastardized versions of humans".well thats one perspective.Here is food for thought though..... Perhaps the homunculi are perfected versions of humans. Enhanced abilities, ( Practically all of them have this), Unique abilities( the ultimate eye, the ultimate spear, the ultimate shield, shapeshifting etc) dont age and have to be literally killed countless times (all of them except wrath) extremly charismatic ( greed, lust, and wrath in My opinion) superior intelligence ( In My opinion Lust, wrath, and Pride..... dont wanna spoil Pride though lol). So whats My point then? They are superior in every way to humans. Lust, Wrath, and Pride I am specifically noting to be generally vastly superior to most humans especially when it comes to intelligence. I just honestly cant think of anyway that humans are superior.......unless you use the old cliche "but humans have actual souls and homunculi are just monsters with cool abilities ". Well to that I would say thats a very simplistic view on it but so be it. The idea put forth by anime (not all anime obviously ) that humans can outbest even the most skilled and bizarre creatures for the very reason that "they never give up and won't fall into the cycle of hatred" and blah blah blah is a cliche that everyone can see through ............ but thats just My 2 cents. And sorry for the essay... lol.
bpayne00295 That reason isn't just cliche, it's not true at all. Plenty of humans give up and give in to the hatred. Almost all of them. Extremely few (if any) humans would actually have a will that can never be broken. Ironically, it's more normal for us to give up and fall into the cycle of hatred. Those qualities would actually define humanity better. Our history is living proof of that.
I compare the girls crying to deadpools 4th-wall-breaks, like in the comics he can just cut through the pages to look whats on the next page. the crazyness in the scene starts to affect the environment in the story for fun, and I think that humor of FMA is just perfect :D
Regarding Ling and May, both of them are children of the emperor, who has dozens of wives and even more children. Right now the emperor is old and dying, so all the houses are near open war over who will succeed him when he dies. If either Ling or May brings back a real philosopher's stone, they can present it to the Emperor to become the annointed heir if the Emperor dies or, if the Emperor uses the stone for immortality, essentially make their clan the most powerful in Xing and the Emperor's right hand.

Envy's transformed state looks like it belongs as a boss in a Souls game.
Regarding what the Elric's have done to aid the military, recall way back in episode 3 that Ed and Al liberated the town of Lior from the puppet priest with a philosopher's stone. After they left, Envy impersonated that same priest and instigated a civil war in that town. What that's for and the Elrics ultimate purpose hasn't been revealed yet, but that civil war they helped start by revealing the priest as an imposter is an important detail to remember.

Yeah, the basic set-up is Mei wants to get the Emperor's favor to save her clan (either from poverty, or land-grabs, I dunno), and Ling wants to do it as a show of force to show the Emperor how capable he is so that he'll be made the top heir.
Envy is so drawn cause jealousy is an ugly thing. :)

This reminds me of the Chinese history. One emperor, I forgot what era, want immortality and send one of his men to find it. He never came back to China because if he goes back empty handed he will be executed.
Ling and Mei are both the Emperor's children. But Mei's clan is very poor and low ranked, which is why she is so desperate to gain the favor of the Emperor. All the siblings are in a battle to see who gets chosen to become the new ruler of Xing.

After watching the whole series again I have to say Bradley is the most badass and dangerous (second only to young father).
They are on episode 25 and still 39 episode are remaining .they watch 1 ep/week. so they are going to complete remaining episodes in next 9 months. hell I watched the whole show in under a week (along with fma) and they are going to take a year😵😵😵😵.I can't remember which episode has which of my favourite moment. Hope they sped up

Both Ling and Mei are prince and princess. They both need it for their clans to survive. I forget Mei' s number but it is 23rd princess or something. There is a civil war going on to ascend the throne so they want to protect their families. The same concept of empires and the children of many wives of a ruler fighting each other for their respective houses and lives. If she doesn't figure it out her clan could be wiped out. If Ling loses the winner might order his death because of his very existence would be a threat.
But they will never read this comment...

The thing with Mei crying and putting out the fire, it's just comical theatrics. 90% of anime do it. It's not meant to really be looked into or taken seriously as anything other that a cutsie/funny gag. Like, it doesn't mean that her body has a ton of water in it or anything like that. Hell, in other anime you'll see a character cry and create a flood with their tears while their partners are sitting in a boat that came out of nowhere with an unamused expression on their face. It doesn't mean that flood will cause any repercussions on the environment... most of the time. Some anime do something with it, most don't. It's just a style choice that most anime use to both add some levity to the situation and also give the characters and series itself more personality/life.
Like when Al said "I've got your soul, brother!" and put Ed's soul back in his body. Understand how, by this logic, that's worse than Mei crying and putting out fire. Al put Ed's soul back in his body without needing any kind of equivalent exchange, while Ed had to sacrifice a leg just to put Al's soul in a suit of armor. That throws the laws of the show COMPLETELY off balance! ... but it was just a gag. Maybe it's because I understand anime and have been watching it for a while, but that stuff comes across obviously to me as something to take as a theatrical gag, and I can identify them immediately. It was just to emphasize the beating Winry gave to Ed.
The silly moments also help define the serious moments. Like how games have "unfun" mechanics that act as a counterbalance to the fun you're having. The lows help define the highs. You can't understand the value of something unless you experience the penalty for losing it. You clearly know when something is meant to be completely serious in FMAB, when that stuff is absent. Since the series has those defined lighthearted/theatrical gag moments, you notice the tone shift *immediately* when it's gone dark.
Mei and Ling are brother and sister.
Rather than the joke affecting someone else, think of it more as someone else participating in the joke

well, create realism isn't what they are trying to do with the show in the first place, just depends on how much you connect it to real life yourself. It is a tv animation that doesn't take itself seriously, but can be serious when needed. If you think about it, a lot of things don't make logical sense: how can the panda do kung fu? panda can't use chopsticks?i know it's probably a wierd feeling seeing dark, gridy, realistic themes and cartoon goofyness colide, but Anime as a show format, has already over-done a lot of themes that make you connect the show to real life as much, they don't take it as serious as you think it should be. People get used to it when they starting to get into anime, but maybe out of personal preference, you don't, which is completely fine. just know this, it is a cartoon after all.
Realism is good but sometimes it takes away to much of possible fun stuff sometimes to me imo.
Uh, establishing realism is something they HAVE done with this show. Going to great lengths to establish their own rules AND be consistent is practicing realism (btw, which is relative to their world's physics).
It becomes "unrealistic" when they defy their own rules. As long as the panda doesn't unrealistically affect someone/thing else (such as defeating an opponent in a drawn out battle) it maintains consistency - relegating all the panda's antics to artistic expression of comedy.

You are confusing "comical situations and effects" that happens independently of the storyline (things that are used in a LOT of anime, except for really dark seinen) AND the storyline himself that is very dramatic and logic. FMA is one of the few anime that succeed to perfectly manage both ! And that's probably why some people that aren't really into anime (or don't watch anime very often) get confused while watching this anime.
Rinku San nope, that's just what your preception of their writing is. arakawa never was trying to creat a deadass realism through out the run, she was trying to creat a complex, logical, slightly dark but fun shounen comic. other-wise there wouldn't be as much talking and catch phrases thrown around, also comedy. it's shounen down to it's core.
also forgot to point out the most obvious thing. if this is so realistic, how come there is no language barrier between xingnese people and amestrians, ling should be speaking giberrish according to ed? see, it's all for the convenience of the story. so i guess that's a part you can ignore?

The guy on the right always think too much, it's simple. Each clan has a emperor's wife, so those 2 are the prince and princess of Ling's country.
Ling's Clan is ranked higher so he can compete to be the next Emperor against his brothers/sisters.
Mei's Clan is the lowest ranked in the Kingdom so they have no power to even compete for the throne.
The Emperor is their father and their mother is their clan leader and or the daughter of the clan leader.

I think that with crying, you are overthinking it, the subject matter their addressing is very dark and they have too lighten it up here and there, also as the other guy mentioned it's cultural thing, like most martial art Chinese movies the actors seem to fly while fighting, also in America very cultural in our movies, which is that we are invincible and our American hero in the movies decimates entire armies in foreign countries all by himself or (herself).

Paul Anthony yes it's an assumption I made by an observing them, just like you're making an assumption like me. Their job is to discuss and make theories so to ME that doesn't really speak volumes. It just seems like recently in their reactions they don't seem that invested on the show. You have your reasons I have mine. As for why I keep coming simply put I like blindwave, but I think I'll just wait for them to finish their fmab reactions, I'll watch them after since I'm not enjoying them that much right now.
