    My head canon: Dementors can't be killed or destroyed. They don't NEED to eat, but they hunger constantly like vampires. In my mind, they probably had a lot of conflict with wizards (and muggles) for a long time. I think they probably made a deal with them to keep them under control. They would provide prisoners for them to feed upon in order to keep them sated because the alternative is much worse: they'd be roaming around uncontrolled, killing lots of innocent people. Sacrificing prisoners does seem barbaric and cruel, but it's preferable to everyone in the world living in fear forever, never knowing when dementors will come for them or their children, as well as exposing the world of magic to muggles which would undoubtedly lead to muggle vs wizard conflicts on top of that.

    • @HunterStiles651
      @HunterStiles651 4 роки тому +5

      Muggles can't see Dementors though. In the presence of Dementors, Muggles just have the same vague feeling of unhappiness that Wizards do, but they don't understand why. Also, for most people being in the presence of Dementors isn't likely to cause any serious harm. Unless you've had some truly awful things happen to you like Harry or Dudley, you'll be fine.

    The carriage scene wasn’t a “body switching power”, it was polyjuice that they each took at the same time, so it wore off at the same time. The proof is that at the beginning of the movie, Picquery says they cut out Grindelwald’s tongue. Later, Grindelwald replaces Abernathy’s severed tongue with a forked one. Also, during the escape scene Abernathy doesn’t speak once. (Maybe he does after he gets his tongue back, I’m not sure)

    Something I’ve always wondered was how more wizards haven’t escaped Azkaban. So you know how Sirius’s wand has runes all over it? Well he supposedly carved them into his wand while he was at Azkaban, which means he must have his wand while at Azkaban. And what creatures guard Azkaban? Dementors. What spell can deflect Dementors? The Patronus Charm. And there is no way that not one prisoner knows how to make a patronus. And the only thing I can think of that would disprove my theory is if there is some spell or potion or something that makes a wand not usable in that location or makes it so that a person can’t cast a spell in that location. Also I know you may be thinking ‘but wait if there are so many dementors someone may not be able to cast the spell.’ Well actually no. In Prisoner of Azkaban Harry deflects 100+ dementors. So there may be more that 100 dementors at Azkaban but if there are multiple people who can produce a patronus then I bet they could do it.

      Samuel Musser, I agree. The only way this breakout tactic makes sense is if Grindelwald is making decisions in order to build the legend of his own power, making himself into a perceived unstoppable foe. Dumbledore's continued existence is the biggest threat to this plan in two ways; First: Albus is a very talented and powerful wizard in his own right and Second: He is essentially the only person alive who truly knows what Grindelwald is actually capable of accomplishing.

    it's not only life sentences in Azkaban, on page 592, it says, "Ludovic Bagman, you were caught passing information to Lord Voldemort's supporters," said Mr. Crouch. "for this, I suggest a term of imprisonment in Azkaban lasting no less than-"
    The fact that he said, "I suggest a TERM" and "imprisonment ...of no less than-" suggests that he was not about to sentence him for life.
    Besides, I can't imagine Crouch saying; "for this, I suggest a term of imprisonment in Azkaban lasting no less than LIFE."
    That's just way too sassy for Crouch.

    Another thing I've been asking myself for a while now: where even is Grindelwald from? ... We know he's from somewhere in Europe and Grindelwald is a German name.. So in my opinion the possibilities could be: .. well Germany, Austria because Nurmengard is located there or Switzerland because there is an actual city named "Grindelwald" there. But he could also be from somewhere around eastern Europe because he attended Durmstrang..
    This question is bothering me for quite some time know and I hope to get a (canon) answer soon (maybe/hopefully in the next part of fantastic beasts...?)

    • @cgrimes34
      @cgrimes34 4 роки тому

      Lina the only possibility I’ve thought of is Bulgaria, or somewhere nearby. We know that Krum attended Durmstrang and played for Bulgaria during the World Cup. While it sounds like Hogwarts serves just the UK, it’s possible that Durmstrang serves multiple countries in eastern/Central Europe. Since no other country was ever mentioned, I always assumed that Durmstrang was in Bulgaria, but I could be wrong. In keeping with its "dark arts leaning" persona, I would guess that Durmstrang could be located in Transylvania. This part of Romania would make sense both symbolically and practically as a German and Bulgarian student could both live close enough to attend.
      So your assumption that Grindelwald could be German seems spot on.
      But now the question is.... If Durmstrang is so landlocked, why do they decide to use a ship to travel to Hogwarts? It almost seems like they mixed up their transportation methods with Beauxbatons. At least France has coastlines.

The books were much better for this. If it's not in the texts it's not canon for me so the move to just fixing explanations in post, essentially, is really jarring. And I actually didn't hate the movie. Fantastic beasts needs to get better though. My interpretation of Grindlewald's escape is that he'd actually escaped weeks before and was using polyjuice or some other spell to impersonate his guard, who was now trapped in Grindlewald's cell without a tongue.
    Why didn't he just escape then? I have no idea.
    Maybe he thought a midair escape would be more impressive, and that it would muddy the waters of when he'd actually escaped and who was responsible, causing a rift between magical law enforcement agencies who now blamed each other for his escape.
    I think the movie suggests that he actually wants to leave his guard behind and escape, but he's forced to hand the bloodpact over and so has to return for it.
    Either way, I don't think MACUSA is actually successful in imprisoning him.
