Can you please do a video about the Weasleys Clock that shows where people are? I've always found it fascinating because that means there is some sort of tracker on everyone and it knows not only location but like if they are in danger or other things (I think) and I think it probably uses similar magic to the Marauders Map and so like why don't Hogwarts heads of houses use it ?? Idk I'd like to know more about it.

4:37 the canon answer for that one is never actually bothing to give Sirius a trial. Ever. They mentioned that during the war Aurors were given the power to imprison without trial. They apparently never got around to giving one everyone involved. Ministry of Magic's human right score is probably in the negatives.
Imagine of they gave Sirius Veritaserum, but they also gave it to the thirteen witnesses . . . that would get confusing

Before this video I just always thought that the reason it wasn’t given to Sirius was he could’ve revealed so much anyway. Keep in mind three of them were unregistered Animangus, which can get you sent to Azkaban anyway, and Remus was a werewolf (to which the Ministry didn’t know as he nor his parents never put his name in the Werewolf Registry). So I always thought:
“Who killed Peter Pettigrew?”
“No one.”
“He’s alive?”
“Yes.”
“Did he kill those Muggles?”
“Yes.”
“How did he escape?”
“He’s an illegal Animangus.”
“How do you know this?”
“I studied with him.”
“Are you as well?”
“Yes.”
“Why would you illegally study this?”
“My friends a werewolf.”
“Who?”
“Remus Lupin.”
He’d get sent to Azkaban anyway, it’d be even harder for Remus to find a job, and really... meh. There’s millions of rats. They’d never find him.

And what does happen logically? Even in our universe, wizards are just as dumb or as smart as us, and also as corrupt as us. We have a polygraphy test that is rarely used, we have psychological ways of getting the truth, we have trials, we have cameras, proofs, DNA tests, we have everything imaginable and still millions of people are wrongfully sent to jail.
I think it's because Sirius himself thought he killed pettigrew, he only realised Peter was alive when he saw him in the newspaper. There was no reason to give it to Sirius because he admitted to killing pettigrew.
Would Avada kedavra work on dementors? If not, why?
On one hand, they are creatures, presumably not undead ones.
On the other hand, they seem soulless.
I could see it being either way and I think there would be good arguments for each side.
All creatures magic works differently. For example, a house elf's highest law is their masters bidding, if they are ordered to do something they are powerless not to. Giants and dragons have to be hit in certain places for certain spells to work and Avada Kedavra presumably doesn't, otherwise Krum would have used it in the first task as he would know how to do the spell having gone to Durmstrang. Expecto Patronum is "the only spell effective against dementors" as it says so on Pottermore. Dementors being soulless doesn't matter anyway because Avada Kedavra leaves the soul intact and destroys the body. One of the biggest reasons for Voldemort's downfall was his failure to grasp that magic which comes from different places works in different ways.

The spell itself is not illegal, the use of it on another person is illegal.
Slughorn clearly stated that felix felicis is poisonous in large amounts, and can cause recklessness and overconfidence to the point where the wizard/witch get themselves in a deadly situations.

No, while this video isn't about Felix Felicis, it's in this video. J screws up and completely forgets the limiting factors of Felix Felicis while criticizing it for being overpowered.
J meant that he would have large amounts so that when neccessary he can give someone a reasonable amount to give them the luck they need without activating any serious side effects

The thing is, Harry only got the map halfway through the book/film and so he only had half a school year to see Pettigrew, when he was probably more interested in finding routes to get out of the castle and into Hogsmeade. And in the films, Harry does spot Pettigrew's name on the map when he's exploring the castle at night, but as he thinks its a person, he holds his lit wand up face-level and doesn't think to check the floor and so he doesn't see Scabbers.
And Harry can be really conveniently dense at times.
In the book he also have seen Pettigrew around the comon room, he thought he remembered that name from somewhere when he first was told about it but didn't know where he had seen it (conveniently dense moment)
But Fred and George never saw him.

We don't actually know that Snape wasn't there. Dumbledore couldn't suggest the use of anything that might inadvertently expose his spy.

I also have to think that if the government _did_ question Sirius, they'd stop after "Did you kill the Potters?" or something like that, because even though he didn't kill them directly, he _believes_ he did by asking them to switch secret-keepers. I think perhaps it's survivor's guilt?
Also, they didn't bother. I'm pretty sure it's canonically stated he never got a trial or anything remotely like that.
True, that's the thing about trying to "get to the truth".. good luck finding someone without any bias in their interpretations to ask the questions.. (even in a fantasy book, that one probably doesn't exist..)
JL C That first part is a good point indeed... I have had COUNTLESS instances of certain people in particular remembering events as going QUITE differently than I remember clearly. As to who is right, it depends on whom you ask... although if I don’t remember something clearly or have some doubt (maybe being drunk or distracted), I am the first to admit: “Maybe I’m wrong???” This is a VERY RARE trait! Most people will argue until the grave that they are right just out of stubborn vanity... I don’t understand it, but it happens... so the point that people are “actually remembering the memory” and not necessarily the truth is an important distinction (I can only do caps on my phone keyboard)

Well a spell (enchantment) acts differently from a potion, so I don't think there is any evidence that potions woult be less effective on a half giant is there? (It's plausible, sure, but I don't know or any actual lore that proves it?)
@@gregoryfenn1462 I don't think there is any evidence that potions act differently from spells, actually. Potions generate a magical effect, just the same as spells, only through a different medium. Hagrid is resistant to all magic. It only seems logical that this would include potions.
So to answer the question, Hagrid is definitely over powered. So much, he needed to be kicked from school in order to lower his magical aptitude somewhat (from a writing perspective) XP

2:56 Seamus Gorman has a theory that I love that says that the Marauders made the map so that only a Marauder could see another Marauder on the map. This explains why no one saw Ron sleeping with Peter Pettigrew but Lupin saw him on there.

It's good to know that Veritaserum will most likely only work when given to the person unknowingly. However, I want to add this: What you are describing is an ideal world in which everyone, including the ministry, is striving for the truth. In the story we see Fudge, who is scared of the difficulty of the situation and the threat it poses to his position, and who believes just what he wants to believe and denies the truth/facts, even making up explanations for certain occurances, and at the same time he discredits the source of the alternate explanation, which is Harry & Dumbledore. It was a matter of power and the construction of "reality" or "truth" - It's also a pretty nice commentary on real-life politics.

in short it was always obvious to me that it's because they didn't want the truth.
Yes, but in those situations the one who was speaking the truth and wanted that to be known could have been willing to take veriraserum in order to prove that they were telling the truth. Of course Fudge would never want to know the truth about Voldemort returning, but if Harry managed to publicly take veritaserum and tell people what happened, a lot more people would believe him and a lot less would fall for Fudges "everything is perfectly fine" campaign, if veritaserum worked that way. Yes, the people questioning don't want to know the truth, but even more so they don't want others to know the truth. The people who are telling the truth have an interest in being believed and that might make them willing to take veritaserum in order to prove that they are telling the truth (again, if the potion worked that way). The existence of a real truth potion without the limitations mentioned in this video would probably mean that it would have an established place in the criminal justice system.
There is no ideal world needed for veritaserum to be useful or at least worth a shot in the scenerios he described, if it didn't have those limitations.

He wouldn't know how to brew the antidote, couldn't use magic against it, he's already aware of magic so it's not as if they're breaking any laws by bringing him in and Dudley probably isn't smart enough to fight it off. Besides, what reason would he have to lie given his history with Harry?
Dudley, like every other Muggle, couldn't see the Dementors. they could ask him about how it felt (everything went cold etc), but he would probably have given the Ministry the same answers as Mrs Figg anyway.

I would love a video about how memory extraction works and how Slughorn tampered with his memory. Also, I've always wondered why wizards even know how to extract memories if the pensive is so rare like what other uses do they have?
And also a question that I've ever had. What would have happened if someone extracted the bad memories about the Crucio spell that Neville's parents had suffered? I believe that will make them sane again, but it is difficult to say without knowing how the spell works.
I guess maybe extracting/tampering with your own memories could help protect you againt occlumency, if someone tried to look inside your mind they would then find fake memories instead of the real memories, maybe it would be useful for wizards who aren't very good at occlumency to just change or remove the memory altogether rather than having to learn how to guard them against occlumency

Except the quibble at 3:00 was talking about Crabbe and Goyle standing guard in the corridor, not in the Room of Requirement. ;-)
My personal theory was always that Veritaserum does *not* work against people that *want* to divulge information. When the potion worked it was against people hiding something that wanted to keep it hidden. Any of the accused people for murder or magic in front of muggles would *want* to divulge that information.
That's what I always thought too but this video made me realize the logical error in that. If they think you did something wrong, they'd give you the serum. Now there are two possible outcomes:
1) You were actually guilty and the serum forces you to tell the truth you wanted to conceal.
2) You are innocent and can therefore stick by your story, thus proving it to be true by process of elimination.
The explanation given in the video, for the serum not being used in criminal cases, makes much more sense, though it doesn't feel as neet or satisfying.
In court situations it just feels like what would happen with actual real world truth detectors. It's ruled as an indication that it might be correct and that it can make mistakes. And I would definitely see someone like Fudge say something like: "Oh yeah, Veritaserum confirming the story is just a bad batch or a fluke".
ironically if that were the case it would still work to determine that they want to divulge information. Also it's designed to work on people who want to divulge misinformation. Kind of means it has to work paradoxically. I agree with this video that it's unreliable which makes it like the equivalent of a convenient polygraph. One thing he doesn't consider is that making some potions or items could do more harm than the good the potion does. For example a horcrux is totally overpowered but most people aren't willing to make one because making one is so immoral. Imagine if you had to get a scale from an endangered dragon or from a really dangerous basilisk or water from a basin with a limited supply that makes the item harder to get and would justify not using it often.

Now you see why (in the real world) polygraph results are not allowed in court. First, it is too easy to fool and second, as you realized here, the version of the truth that a person has in their mind may be a long, long way from the reality of the situation. This really isn't a question of JKR having to backtrack and add issues with the serum - she simply had to realize, as American courts did in the 1930s and 1940s, that the polygraph machine which had been invented by William Moulton Marston (also creator of Wonder Woman and one of the ten weirdest human beings of the 20th century) had two major issues: first, it didn't work very well (and still doesn't) and second, truth is far more subjective than most people realize.

Lie detectors cant be held up in a court of law because they'er mostly there to intimidate, usually your breathing and heart beat speed up when you lie but that also happens when your nervous.

Yes, I believe the polygraph is based off the human biological responses to telling an untruth. So, a psychopath telling a lie would not be registered on a polygraph because their body makes no biological responses. Not only this, but partial truths are an issue. When something is a half-lie/half-truth it won't always give the right result.

This was all answered in The Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone: Wizards have little grasp on logic, to the extent that one of the greatest wizards in the series, Snape, felt comfortable that a relatively simple logic puzzle would stymie the majority of people going after the titular relic.
And Dumbledore presumably agreed, seeing as how he didn't just slap Snape in the back of the head and tell him to try again.

Actually, Dumbledore planned for Harry to make it through the rooms, as a test and for Harry to grow. He planned from the start what experiences Harry would need to survive and would need to be able to one day kill Voldemort. This is particularly obvious when you notice that each of the puzzles was aimed at one of the members of the trio.
@@soniccookie655 Except that he didn't design the tests other than the Mirror of Erised, and Snape was the one who designed the potion logic test in order to fend off a "brilliant" evil wizard that he knew personally, and was also doing his best to keep Harry away from the tests in the first place (admittedly, in the douchiest way possible).
Not to mention that he had no way of knowing that Harry would become BFFs with a chess nerd and a nerd nerd, or be preternaturally talented at Quidditch.
@@lnsflare1 It would be a very dumb puzzle for pretty much anyone, yeah. But I imagine Dumbledore had a lot of influence, maybe it was just there to stall for time. The rest of the puzzles are silly too, like Quidditch With Flying Keys. The chess one was good but weirdly specialized (designed for Ron, of course, because he’s good at chess).
I’m not sure how Dumbledore could get the teachers on board, though, because I don’t think he told them what he was planning.
In a crossover ff between HP en pokemon (if you are interested in both, it is a very good one, way better than it has any right of haha).
Anyway in that ff dumbledore actually explains the challenges were designed to be easy to overcome. He knew students would try to enter the room and thus once they would be teleported away they would be locked in a room, stuck for a while and then be collected by a head of house, get a scolding and then be let off. Only the mirror was a real test to protect the Master ball (pokemon equivalent for the stone).
Imo this also works a bit with the actual HP version, tho it seems way too dangerous compared to the ff XD
The suspect could be made to do the Unbreakable Vow that they are going to tell the truth for like 15 minutes, there's no antidote for that, they can be aware of it, and they can be asked if their memory was modified.

That being said, if there was an additional reason to hold your tongue you could literally just blurt out “my family is being threatened” or something and they’d have to take that into consideration

I always figured that Snape’s potion expertise came into play here and his stock was EXTREMELY expensive to the point that only a person with the skill to brew it could actually afford using it. The ministry of magic could never afford such an expensive thing for even the trial of the century.
My biggest problem is with the when harry had the elder wand. He could have fixed Hogwarts with one flick of that wand but he doesn’t only thing he did in the book was fix his old wand and get rid of it.
I think the spell Obliviate is very powerful and is very easily used by Lockhart, Hermione so it can be used often by skilled wizards. I mean it would be so cool if someone like Dumbledore used it on Voldemort to make him forget about his desire to become immortal. I mean it would've been so convenient.
Similarly it can be used on any criminal to make them forget about their wrong intentions and have them choose the right path!

Shailja Choudhary But Voldemort is powerful enough to counter spells before it could even hit him. Even if it was Dumbledore doing nonverbal spells. Plus I think it only works on memories, and prob not on innate desires or fears. Like you could forget why you want something but you’d probably still want it, especially if you want it so bad. Also memories can be restored, so any of Voldemort’s followers can just restore his memories at any given point. :)

Seems like the best use for truth serum is as a scare tactic for school children.
I’m pretty sure JKR answered this by saying that it forces you to tell what you believe to be the truth not the actual truth. So since the Ministry was convinced of both Sirius and Harry’s guilt it wouldn’t have mattered since to them they are just saying what they believe to be true.

The whole retconning the Cloak of Invisibility from "a very rare artifact" (of which probably more than one exist, but not many) to a one-of-a-kind Deathly Hallow was pretty funny. And I remember reading, as the books went on, the narrator mentioning that it was harder for the trio of protagonists to stay fully concealed beneath the Cloak as they got older. Presumably these comments were added to explain why they couldn't rely on the Cloak so much, and whenever it was used, it would almost always only be hiding one wizard.

I've also wondered why more people didn't just pull out their memories to show people. We see Slughorn, Snape, and Dumbledore all pull their own memories out for the pensive. And Dumbledore gets them from multiple people. I get that Slughorn edits his, but it was clear it was done.
Here’s something I’ve been wondering about. In Goblet of Fire Sirius breaks into a Wizard house and uses the fireplace there to speak with Harry in the fireplace in the Griffindor common room. He does the same thing in order of the Phoenix right before Umbrige tries to catch him. So travel (not just communication) from and into hogwarts common room fireplaces is possible, otherwise how was Umbrige able to reach through and try and grab Sirius.
Knowing that, why did Malfoy have to work so hard to repair the cupboard in the half blood prince when they all could have just come through the Slytherin common room fireplace?
The reason they didn't give it to Sirius is because no one asked. Sirius himself believed that he killed pettigrew and was quite happy about it. He only realized Peter was alive after seeing him in the newspaper. There simply was no reason to give it to Sirius since he himself admitted to killing pettigrew.
Sirius never believed he killed Pettigrew. Sirius always claimed what he saw: that Pettigrew tearfully shouted at Sirius in a busy street "How could you?", pointed his own wand behind his own back, cast a curse that caused the street to blow up and right when he cast the spell he quickly transformed into his rat animagus. Sirius believed Pettigrew to be dead because of the explosion, but he never believed he was the one that killed him.

No, this is one of the few theories that is just contrary to the explicit story. Sirius may have held mistaken guilt for James and Lily's deaths, but he never believed he killed those random muggles or Peter. The whole point of him staying sane in Azkaban was that he held onto the powerful thought of being an innocent man.
I feel like Polyjuice Potion is a little too much like a plot device because it's not really used in major crimes at all and it seems relatively easy to make considering 2nd years made it successfully. It seems like Polyjuice Potion has been reserved for only good use (besides Barty Crouch Jr). Like if you agree!!!!

You know, me being a faithful Ravenclaw, and reading the Pottermore prefect letter, I have a question. In book 5 Luna says people steal her stuff. But we know that only other Ravenclaws can do this. Pottermore says that Ravenclaw is accepting of those that are different. So why will they steal from her?

Dude such people exist EVERYWHERE. Even Hufflepuffs(the kindest house) has bullies. So while Ravenclaws are not that rude in general, there are always few exceptions. For example, why was Gilderoy Lockhart sorted into Ravenclaw if he was neither smart nor wise?
Lockhart was definitely clever to track down all those witches and wizards, wipe their memories and make himself famous like that. He lacks bravery or wisdom, but he is clever indeed.

I wrote like 6 points debunking the first half of this before I realized you were going to explain why it wasn't more used. Whoops. Although I can cover one part:
Harry knows a lot of things he should NOT reveal, such as the existence of the order of the phoenix, and a whole host of things he's done and shouldn't have so it's highly unlikely he'd suggest using Veritaseum as it could cause more issues and he had little trust in the Ministry at that time. The Ministry certainly wouldn't, given that Umbridge actually did order the attack so they were TRYING to get him kicked out and prove he was lying even when they knew otherwise, and worst of all he might just blurt out "Voldemort's back" or something and destroy that entire angle they were working too.

I think the truth potion works even when you're aware of taking it, because Hermione warns Harry in the Order of the Phoenix (chapter 29) that if he gets caght attempting to talk to Sirius, Umbridge 'will force him to drink veritaserum to answer her questions', and Hermione usually knows everything about potions and their properties, so she's aware that it can be used even when the drinker knows about it.

That's not how placebo works. For the placebo effect, one must believe that a substance will cause a particular effect to their body (such as relieving pain), and their brain will be tricked into creating the effect.
In other words, the person must be unsuspecting of whether or not the potion actually works, not unaware of the potion entirely, in order for there to be a placebo effect.

Interesting, it seems like veritaserum is similar to things like polygraphs for us muggles, something that is supposed to determine if a person is lying, but in actuality has several ways to be fooled or circumvented, distorting its reliability.

This is what happened.
It would be a stretch to assume Fred and George were using the map to spy on their little brother in the middle of the night. By the time Ron got to school they already had the map memorized. They never used it to spy on students. They probably used it primarily to spy on teachers and filch.
I feel the Marauders Map is THE MOST CONVENIENT magical object in the whole Wizarding World, considering it was invented by four fifth years (three if you ignore Wormtail). Like it even PREDICTS what the person is about to say even before he says it ("Dissendium!"), reveals the identity of people under Polyjuice Potion, AND IS ABLE TO THINK ON ITS OWN (Like giving creative replies to Snape) - All this, even after the creators of the object have died - thus not having to depend on their magical powers to sustain itself...
The dissendium wasnt a prediction. The map knows all passwords. It just informed Harry what he needed to say, nothing else. The rest is completely true tho

I get why Truth Potion can't be used in the court of law. But why don't they use pensieves? Why didn't they just take Sirius' memories - he remembers not being the secret keeper of the Potters and remembers not killing innocent muggles.

Hagrid confesses things all the time, even when you don't ask him. He ends a lot of his conversations with Harry, Ron and Hermione with, "I shouldn't have told you that".

After thinking of Slughorn's memory it just occurred to me that Voldemort possibly wanted him to be a Death Eater as a ploy to kill him. Slughorn was the only one who knew of possible Horcruxes and that proved to be key information for Dumbledore and Harry.
Also, also I don't know why I always thought Slughorn had two memories, one of the true events and the second of the altered events kept neatly as a file drawer in his mind. I took it for granted that he had control of both and revealed either whenever it was convenient for him. To be honest, I think it demonstrates his skill as a wizard and mastery over his mind because even people's memory can be altered over time without notice or because of trauma. It's a great question to ask though, and I appreciate that Jonathan is so inquisitive! Great video!
