Dementors, boggarts and poltergeists aren't animals, they're non-beings.
They're creatures that don't have similar muggle relatives. They're purely magical creatures, and manifestations of emotion: dementors, despair; boggarts, fear; and poltergeists, mischievousness.
Because they're purely magical, muggles cannot see non-beings. Muggles can feel the presence of boggarts, even glimpsing them, and can feel the effects of dementors, and of course experience the physical activities a poltergeist causes, like throwing stuff.
Non-beings aren't alive, and so cannot be killed. The charms that affect each non-being can only repel them. To decrease their number, you have to decrease the amount of their associated emotion in an area.
Dementors "grow like fungi" and survive in places of despair, and as Lupin said, "Our pain becomes their power." The more despair and upset there is, the more of them there are, and the stronger they are. You can repel them with the Patronus Charm, but that's not the only way of combatting them. In his 6th year, Harry argued with Snape in a Defence Against the Dark Arts class about the best way to combat dementors, with Harry saying it was the Patronus Charm, and Snape saying otherwise. In Deathly Hallows Part 2, Repello Inimicum, a protective enchantment cast over Hogwarts, is shown to repel dementors.

      www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/dementors-and-chocolate
Boggarts are generated and sustained by fear. Boggarts prefer to hide in confined spaces, such as cupboards and underneath beds, but also take residence in woods and around shadowy corners.
Jack the Ripper, a murderer from the Whitechapel district of London, was actually a boggart, and the most infamous boggart in the world.
      www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/boggart
(The issue with this article is Rowling saying non-beings are "strange". They're not. No creature, alive or non-being, is strange. Humans aren't a baseline of life.
"There are no strange creatures, only blinkered people." - Newt Scamander
Likewise, poltergeists grow in places of and survive due to mischievousness. Peeves is so strong because there's been 1000 years of students and some mischievous staff at Hogwarts. That mischievousness resulted in Peeves. And I think there may be a unique aspect of poltergeists which explains why he can't be removed from the castle: unlike other non-beings who can move freely, like dementors leaving Azkaban, poltergeists are a part of where they're generated, so Peeves is a part of Hogwarts, as much as the walls, and windows, and doors, and grounds are. This is further evidenced by him acquiescing to the wishes of the teachers in regards to the purpose of a school: teaching, by staying out of classrooms during lessons. It's further corroborated by Peeves obeying Dumbledore, the head of the school, as well as being afraid of the Bloody Baron despite him posing no threat to Peeves: the Baron killed Helena Ravenclaw, daughter of Hogwarts founder Rowena Ravenclaw. Peeves is scared of the Bloody Baron because Peeves is a part of the school, and a creation is an extension, a piece of its creators, and the Baron was a danger to a founder's daughter whom, despite their estrangement, she obviously loved, and so that is manifested in him.
      www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/peeves
Edit: I was wrong on Jack the Ripper.

If I remember correctly, Dementors were created by dark wizard Ekrizdis, maybe he created the Dementors using Boggarts that he either overfed with human fear and despair (after all he was torturing muggles on his island) or purposefully created them (twisting Boggarts to serve his goals) to instill fear and despair in his victims. Maybe he didn't even consciously create the Dementors, it was rather a side-effect of his actions on the island. Anyways, I think it would tie nicely with your theory. Question: when Harry hears Lily’s screams, is it actually his memory? Or, is it Voldemort’s soul shard that is remembering the event as his downfall? Seems to me more likely the latter, since Harry was a 1 year old at the time. So theory: after Voldemort’s defeat, would Harry still have the same reaction to a dementor?

    • @Paolabear7
      @Paolabear7 2 роки тому +45

Yes. I forget what book it is but they do eventually say that the scream is from Voldemorts memory. They don’t say this part but Voldemort had just been defeated by an infant and the scream is the last thing he heard when it happened. Of course it’s going to be with his fear of failing. I like to imagine that the reason Harry hears it is not just because of Voldemorts memory but also because he too was scared in that moment. Even tho Harry doesn’t remember it, it’s possibly buried deep in his subconscious.

Harry also remembers a Flying Motorcycle and a Bright Green Light.
So he has rudimentary memories of that night (despite children not really having Memories until they’re two-to-three at the earliest). I’m gonna lean towards the horcrux influencing how Harry processed things that young. After it’s destroyed it’s possible that Harry only has a “memory of a memory” of the flying motorcycle memory/remembering himself drawing a flying motorcycle in primary school but can’t Recall that memory beyond “I remember doing this + I’ve ridden in this thing when I turned 17”

Interesting question. I guess it's voldemorts sould they see, and the pain of him at the last moments. Luna lost her mother too, neville has painfull memories of his parents not remembering him.
However, Harry cannot see thestrals, his soul dies not remember their deaths I guess, till cedrick, but voldemort can. Why does the part of voldemorts soul does not make him see thestrals before? It enables him to talk to snakes... so many contradictions. • @Paolabear7

@@kathzemiau7234 JK actually talks about that. Harry doesn’t even see the thestrals on the way home after the tournament because you kind of have to process the death first. Harry can see them after having marinated in what happened that night for two months. At the end of Goblet he was still a bit in denial in a “maybe this was all a dream” sort of way. Which is why he can’t see them from the beginning despite having seen his mother die.

I think after GoF, Moody's boggart would be that chest he was locked in by Barty Crouch Jr.
He was a powerful Auror for so long, he was so used to being at the front of the fight for the light. He believed he took every single precaution he could, and yet, he still failed to protect himself. And that kind of failure would eat at a person who is as proud as Moody is. He might start to wonder if he is as crazy and broken down as many people around him think, that maybe he has lived past his usefulness. For him, that chest would represent the possibility that he is no longer an asset, but a burden.

According to Pottermore, Moody's greatest fear if Voldemort. So I always thought what Moody saw when he looked in the drawer was an apparition of Voldemort curled up like a contortionist inside the drawer. Since he knew that (A) Voldemort couldn't access the Order's HQ, and (B) even if he could, that kind of hiding just wasn't Voldemort's style, he realized that it was most likely a boggart.

I think it makes total sense that Moody’s boggart is a Dementor. He very obviously has PTSD (“CONSTANT VIGILANCE”), and someone with PTSD’s greatest fear would definitely be the creature that forces you to feel unsafe and relive your worst memories. Not only that, but the other character that we see that likely has PTSD is Harry (In book 5, he has constant nightmares, is easily agitated, and is often mentioned pulling his wand out “on instinct” showing that he’s always alert of danger). Harry is the only other character we know to have his boggart be a Dementor.

I never assumed the boggart-dementor has the actual abilities of a full-fledged dementor, and that Harry feeling the effects was just his own internal fears and expectations of how to feel around what appears to be an actual dementor.

I think it's really great that you're throwing this theory out there since it's a correlation that's surprisingly easy to make, yet I have never seen anyone talk about this.
And it is certainly entertaining to think about, but:
    Correlation does not equal causation.
It is suspicious that these creatures show so many similarities, but that just isn't enough to give the theory that boggarts are baby dementors any leg to stand on.
The only thing that could have been a real argument for this theory was the boggart's replication abilities. But the fact's presented here are easy to poke holes in.
We can't assume that the boggart wouldn't be able to replicate venom? Shouldn't it be able to replicate every physical aspect?
And the Lupin argument just feels disingenuous, since it's not like one second of moonlight equals an instant werewolf transformation.
We don't even know if the boggart is really copying a dementor's ability like you described (isn't his mom's screaming an essential part of Harry's fear? we don't even know if the boggart was really doing anything to harry or if the stress just made him pass out) and if it can, it's still not a good argument since we can't be sure it doesn't copy every ability of any creature it turns into.

With all the class there you cant trick your mind into seeing it as an activity: I mean we see it in that scene how they were all nervous untill Neville's (who actually got his abuser) triumph, and then everyone congratulate him and started having fun with it.

They answered this question at the end. They believed he would see a baby dementor. They just don't know why. It could be because that's what a bogart is or it could also be because they think Moody's greatest fear is a dementor.

In the book also Snape steps out of the cupboard. It goes like this -
" A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville.
So it means boggarts can see who is facing them from inside of cupboards or wardrobes.
And probably Moody saw what his worst fear was in the cupboard and recognised the boggart.

I believe that this is because Lupin isn't actually afraid of the transformation, but the thought that it occurs. He isn't afraid to turn into a warewolf, but he hates that he is one. So, he isn't afraid of the full moon, but the sight of it.
Similar with Harry. He isn't actually afraid of dementors, but their effect on him. So, in order to scare him they need to replicate those effects.
Plus, in the "Goblet of Fire" Harry recognises a Boggart because it trips on its cloak, meaning they aren't meant to float like dementors.
Further proof, is that Molly, in the scene mentioned in the beginning saw the corpses with blood coming out of them. Which means that boggarts can replicate substances.
I do believe though, that Dementors were made by corrupting Boggarts.

According to "The double slit experiment" in our real world, the act of just observing something, in this case the non-being called a Boggart would be enough for it to change into whatever your fear is.
Moody does observe the Boggart, hence it changes before he can see it´s natural state.

Have you ever tackled the question why Lupin only transforms as the moonlight hits him in prisoner of Askaban? This has always confused me as it would mean you could avoid transforming just by preventing to be hit by moonlight. In that case being a werewolf wouldn't be a big deal after all. Just get some really good blinds for your windows and sleep trough that one night each month.
