Sierra & Billy you guys are true professionals. It really makes me happy to watch the two of you working on a boat, any boat, only because you really get stuff done. Projects like you just completed in 8 months would take most couples years to do. Now, when is that catamaran going to be ready? Any idea when you'll pick it up and where you'll take delivery and commission the boat?

Running North of SF is no Joke! Definitely have everything bolted down, strapped down. Go do a Bay Storm run, give the boat a good toss in the rough stuff before you head out make sure fuel systems tolerate the rough conditions etc! Once your outside the Gate going North getting closed out of the small marinas is a common and real deal so knowing your fuel burn, range and that the boat will run while getting tossed pretty good is important👍 Looking forward to seeing your trip

You two did a great job fixing up that boat. I do get the marina wanting photos of a boat that is older as they do get so many sort of homeless people who are just going to be a big hassle to get rid of . Now that your boat is all fixed up looking at least I do not think any marina is going to turn you down if they have an open spot for your boat now . I hope to see you sailing the world on your new boat soon but I would sure like to see a few little clips of whoever buys that boat going around doing whatever they plan on doing with her

Great to hear those Lehman diesel engines purring. My brother has a 40’ Defever with a single Lehman diesel which he keeps up in Semiahmoo Marina north of Bellingham, WA and I have spent quite a bit of time on it. Great job on getting the boat prepped!
I captained a power catamaran up the coast from LA to Bellingham, Washington for a friend. We traveled in the summer and still ran into a situation where we had to wait out a storm in Newport, OR. Just my 2-cents worth, but I would be very cautious about taking a boat north in the winter time as the storms can get quite bad. Along the Oregon and Washington coasts, there are few ports for safe harbor and even those can be closed down due to excessive wave heights and/or extreme tides. Be especially cautious crossing the Columbia River bar (between Oregon and Washington) as many boats have been lost there. It is best to cross it on slack tide or on a flood tide. It is most dangerous when crossing it on an ebb tide! Westerly swells stack up into steep waves due to the fresh water flowing into the ocean from the river and on an ebb tide, the outgoing water accelerates the river current. Don’t fall prey to “get-there-itis”.
One thing I wished we had on our trip was a FLIR system on the boat as we traveled most days into the night time. Unfortunately, there were small fishing boats along the coast working at night that our radar didn’t pick up and they weren’t all using AIS. A FLIR system would have been very useful. I would also recommend you have radar as you are much more likely to encounter fog traveling in the winter months.
    Love your channel!

I really enjoy seeing you two work together so well. You try to do everything correct.
I did see something that concerns me though. When you wired up your three batteries you allowed the negative cable to lay heavily on the positive cables. I would hate to see a dead short occur if the insulation becomes thin as the cables heat up . I figured when you put the positive cables on you would be looping the negative the other way and was concerned right away.
Keep up the great work on your "Master Piece"

I hope you guys have researched cruising the west coast. You will be going uphill against the California Current and the prevailing winds. A rule of thumb that many use is any winds over 15 knots and wave intervals of less then 10 seconds is a no go unless you like roller coasters. The closer to shore the higher the swells.
Some folks travel farther offshore and at night the wind dies down, the swells are lower, and no crab pots. The downside of this approach is when it’s time for fuel you turn and the swells are on your port side for a couple of hours of rock and roll.
Speaking of fuel stops. they are few and far between. And most require a bar crossing. It would be a good idea to have paper charts for the harbors. Don’t forget to check the Notice to Mariners. I hope you get a good radar you will be close to shipping lanes and depending on the time of year plenty of coastal fog at all those bar crossings.
When you depart the SF Bay hug the north side of the golden gate. You have more wind protection. Try to get under the bridge during slack tide after you pass under the bridge you’ll be going over the bar which can get nasty on an ebb tide.
Good luck and enjoy the ride!

been following you since the real early days. great to see this trawler going! havnt watched in a while, but this popped up. west coast, near and off shore, is a completely different animal. I am sure you have looked into it, but you cannot just hug the coast on the way up. shelter can be far between, and unavailable in storms. I would recomend the radar and all devices working. And when you come into any rivers and if you make it up to puget sound/san juan/gulf islands, you need to post watch for floating and dead head logs. this doesnt exist in the waters you have sailed, same with the hypothermia. looking forward to following the journey up the coast!

A few years ago, I bought a complete marine electronics package that was only a couple old. The guy I bought them from upgraded all the electronics on his 3 year old boat. The shop that did the work cut up most of the cables removing them and they did not comes with them and the manufacturer was nuts when it came to the prices of the ones they did have in stock. I ended up ordering all of the connectors and making the cables myself, which cost me under $200. I found the diagrams to make them in all of the manuals.

Excellent! Stoked y’all found a little spot. I’m in Berkeley and had so much trouble when I first came in with my trawler. I have Catalina 38 now and can go anywhere but it’s tough to get a spot unless your part of a yacht club which I am here in Berkeley and it’s awesome/I’m able to sail to any yacht club dock and stay. I love the yacht club. Y’all could get a membership at your local yacht club or in Berkeley or somewhere around here for cheap and then you can go to different yacht clubs and stay on the dock pretty much as long as you want for free pretty much all up and down the coast. So stoked for y’all though. Epic and I’m pretty sure I seen y’all out there (I was out there on my buddies catalina 38 around that time).

Jetty's looking happy to have the wind in his mug. The yacht is awesome! Wishing you some good cruises before you put it on the block. Orrrr....? do something like LaVagabonde and hire a captain to charter it out. Could be a brilliant source of steady income while providing guests a great time.
