Very fair points. We're so hard pressed to want to spend on sub-100 proof bottles so part of our opinion on Dickel 8 was based on the lower proof. We should've communicated that a bit better.
For us the Dickel 8 year is a good bottle to put in a tasting with a newbie group. Pretty easy to find, it's inexpensive and the palate isn't too aggressive for a newcomer to whiskey. I don't get as much of the 'vitamin' note in it vs other Dickel products. The Buy/not buy segment was great. Of our collection, there are quite a few that we won't be replacing. Which will help scale back our bottle count. Cheers
Thanks Kathy! There's so many bottles we actually enjoy *but* wouldn't rebuy simply because there's so much variety out there and new stuff to explore all the time. We're already lining up bottles for our next filming and it's interesting to consider what we will and won't be rebuying. Hope it's helpful to others!
Nice segment 👍🏽. I like the good buy or goodbye suggestion too. Also, just got one of the last 1792 picks you did at Nashville daily. Someone I know was down there and snagged one for me. Looking forward to trying it out.
So happy to hear that Jeff! Let it get some air into it and then let us know what you think (on the fresh crack and first quarter of the bottle we’d pour a glass and let it sit for 10-30 minutes before getting into it-now that the bottle is halfway down that’s not necessary).
Thanks Demitri! How someone votes with their dollars speaks the loudest in our book. There's plenty of bottles we enjoy a lot but wouldn't rebuy for a lot of reasons. We really hope this recurring segment is helpful for folks. Cheers and thanks for watching!
It definitely is, although we feel like so many other things work well in Old Fashioned as well that we're not too sad if we can't get Buffalo Trace. That's one of those products that we feel is a good solid pour but also isn't anything so unique that there aren't plenty of comparable options out there. Cheers and thanks for watching Troy!
Standard Buffalo Trace is bottled after many barrels are batched together, whereas the store picks are a single barrel than a store chooses to sell individually. As a result, the standard Buffalo Trace tends to be more consistent in flavor whereas the single barrel store picks tend to have a bit more range to their flavors (and come across more interesting to us). Great question CRH! We did a store pick video back in the fall where we compared the standard Buffalo Trace to two different single barrel store picks if you've got some time to check. It's a good watch!
Definitely! We've sampled some Green River products at one of our local shops but it was bourbon sourced from Green River--not Green River's own labeling. We're always on the lookout for new stuff for the single sample pool and Green River would be a great fit. Hoping we see it pop up in our local market soon.
I agree with several of your choices for bye-bye and buy-again. Recently bought Coopers Craft after trying it a year ago. I was hoping it would be a replacement for Early Times BiB (my former favorite every day pour, but since the new bottles recently came out - its not as sweet and more ethanol forward now), but its still not what I would like it to be. Also bought the OF 1897 but not a big fan of it either (its hard to beat 1920). Same with regular Buffalo Trace, I'd rather find a store pick. Please keep this series up its very informative.
Glad you're digging this series, Tim. We're loving seeing how folks agree or disagree in the comments as well. It's always interesting how tastes align or differ. We're already polished off a few bottles for the next one. Cheers!
Erin, we could be great friends/drinking buddies! 😆 I LOVE Coopers Craft! I bought it in Denver for $22. Amazing value. Add Rare Breed and I'm good for the evening. Absolutely agree with you.
Thanks Roger! And that's a fantastic price for Cooper's Craft! That would move it into the rebuy category for sure. For us it's over $35 with tax here which makes it not quite as great of a value buy.
I had low expectations for the Dickel 8 Year. Normally don’t like Dickel bottles, except for select BiB’s from them. But decided to get it as it was a low retail and worse case it becomes a cocktail mixer. I was actually happily surprised! Didn’t enjoy Cooper’s Craft but maybe I need to give it a try again. Always wanted to get the 1792 BiB but never can find it in my area. Maybe someday I’ll come across it. Cheers and another great video. 🥃
Funnily enough, we feel like Cooper's Craft is a pretty good alternative to 1792 BiB if you can't find that in your market. They're different for sure, but you almost need to taste them side by side to notice the nuances that make 1792 BiB "better" (and even then some folks will still prefer Cooper's Craft). Saying that to say that if you don't love Cooper's Craft, 1792 BiB may not be in your flavor wheelhouse either.
The 46 line has really knocked the standard Maker's line down a peg in our book. A year ago that Cask Strength would've been a likely rebuy or at least a strong "maybe," but with 46 Cask Strength available we're reaching for that every time. Great comment, Ron. We're right there with you!
We've had some 17-18 year store pick bottlings under their 15 year labeling that have been quite good, but on the whole we do tend to agree with you that their BiB series is their best product offering. Cheers Bill!
I have a bottle of Dickel 15 year that is the most boring pour I've ever had. Small amount of flavor up front and finishes like literal water. Total waste of $60 or whatever it was that I paid for it. I mean it's so boring it makes Basil Haydens seem interesting. And that's saying a lot.
Haha, that definitely speaks volumes. In our experience the Dickel 15 year stuff can either be very boring like you mentioned, very Flinstones vitamin heavy on flavor to the point of being off-putting, or it can be surprisingly great if it's a 17-18 year bottling with some proof and from the right barrel. On the whole though, we feel it's more miss than hit with Dickel.
I was the same on CC, when I kept seeing it as the BF replacement for Early Times BiB, I had to try it and meh. We so rarely see BT around here in OKC that over the holidays, I snagged a liter, then in finishing my old bottle, I found myself thinking...why did I get that bottle?...I'II probably either gift it or mix it (which weirdly is where I also am with a bottle of Smoke Wagon Straight from Denver...not to be confused with the excellent Small Batch or UCUF...but it may be useful in a swap or something)....often agree on BT picks...maybe not compared to other, even basic picks though. And yay...Rare Breed is reappearing here, just as my last bottle was vanishing!!!
Cheers to all that, David (especially the replacement Rare Breed). The funny thing about Buffalo Trace is that the more store picks we try, the more they highlight this kinda funky, thin, sour note on the finish of the standard Buffalo Trace offering that doesn't quite sit right with us--almost like apple juice that has started to spoil. It's very faint, but it's there for us, and certainly has us less excited about Buffalo Trace than we ever have been before.
"Last Pour", "Bottle kill vs Bottle Resurrection", Treasure or Trash. The only Whiskey I did not agree with you on was Coopers Craft. WHISKEY CHEERS 😎😎😎😎
For the "90 proof and $35 or under" category, we tend to agree that Russell's 10 is pretty much the undisputed champion. If we were buying based on those metrics, that's the bottle we'd be reaching for ourselves. Great comment! Cheers CH!
We don’t put much stock into mashbills. High rye can be incredibly balanced if it’s blended and/or aged well, and low rye or even no rye (wheat whiskey) can burn like crazy if it’s young or poorly blended.
Always interesting to me when people say they dont get the vitamins. I havent had the eight year but for me its very prominent on every dickel ive had. Doesnt matter if its finished, ive had sugary flavored whiskeys that are dickel and i can taste it. Its so prevalent even blind in my experience and i always hate it. Flintstones vitamins are the most accurate way to put it.
We were so excited to get this one into the first sip pool to try blind to see if that note stood out. It would be interesting to try it non-blind to see if we picked up on the Flintstones note. Dickel might be the cilantro of the whiskey world. Dickel is definitely more miss than hit for us, but we've had some amazing 17-18 year store picks that have gone toe to toe with Remus Repeal batches in blinds, so we may be less sensitive to the minerality (at least in moderation).
Right on,,,,, on the must buy again
Didn’t like the Dickel 8 year on the first couple pours but once the bottle opened up I came around to like it and would buy it again for that price
Very fair points. We're so hard pressed to want to spend on sub-100 proof bottles so part of our opinion on Dickel 8 was based on the lower proof. We should've communicated that a bit better.
Gone but not forgotten
Erin's stinky feet to sock save is a classic. The difference of the two are probably minimal, but as always you guys are entertaining as hell.

Brilliant. We're going to keep that idea in mind!

Brilliant, Zach! Simply brilliant!
@@stuffandwhiskey thanks!
Gold! I vote for this :)
I actually like the Dickel 8 yr Bourbon, not bad for $26 here in mid michigan 😊Cheers 👍😉🥃
😂🤣 love slip-on boots 🥾
Those Aussies are on to something. 😂 Cheers Paul!
I like on my second bottle
Love it 🤣😂 stinky socks
I think this is why I love watching you two....my thoughts on "Bye-Bye or Buy Again" is exactly the same. Keep it up!
Thanks Demitri! How someone votes with their dollars speaks the loudest in our book. There's plenty of bottles we enjoy a lot but wouldn't rebuy for a lot of reasons. We really hope this recurring segment is helpful for folks. Cheers and thanks for watching!

@@stuffandwhiskey I'm a big fan of Belle Mead cherry casks.
I’m not a rye guy BUT picked up the Rare Breed Rye on your recommendation and I absolutely love it. Now I need the regular Rare Breed
Glad to hear it, David! If you like the rye, you're likely going to love the bourbon. Wild Turkey have something special in that product line.
What is the difference between regular buffalo trace, and buffalo tray store pick?

Would you try Green River

Better than JD old no.7 😌

Sounds like Calvindos
Im sorry i cant figure out what calvindos is. I googled it and didnt get anything
@@LeatherDaddy97 I spelled it wrong. It’s Calvados and it’s a whiskey made from fermented apples. In the region of France.
@@tragic504 ok yeah calvados
Glad Aidan asked because we were coming up empty as well, but Belle Meade has done some Calvados-finished whiskey and now that totally rings a bell!
I love cooper's craft, but I'm a huge brown forman fan. Can't get it in my market, so I nurse my bottle until I travel east again
re-buy or retire

Send your red wings to
Trent and Heath
They are coblers and they have a UA-cam channel. They can resole your red wings.

The only George Dickel whiskey I care for is theirs Bottled in Bond.

@@stuffandwhiskey yeah i cant do cilantro either. Cilantro tasting soapy is due to how you percieve aldehydes. It effects about 10% of the population.
