Excellent video buddy, straight honest diagnosis of the cost of living there, I’m originally from Guam, born and raised, joined and retired from the military and go home every once in a while, married a local from Mississippi. I could retire and live at home comfortably but it’s the job that I currently work for that pays me well. For a mainland resident like yourself to pronounce the villages like a champ, kudos brother! Enjoy that pacific paradise.
This is actually an incredibly well done and informative video on someone that is trying to compare prices to their home region. Bravo! Thanks a lot for this
Thank you for your info about Guam, it was very useful. If you think that’s expensive, move to California. 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment is $3k on average + gas is currently $4.57 a gallon and food is getting ridiculously expensive as well. Guam seems like a good place to get a break from Cali
Excellent video and very informative for a non military person moving to Guam, I lived there 2013-15 while working on the construction of GRMC, I found your percentages of cost similar. I was lucky enough to have a friend who had access to the Navy store and their prices were ' jaw droopingly' low compared to outside. I loved bike riding (MTB) and had some fabulous rides in Guam, tried snorkelling as well. I was lucky enough that the company paid my rent at Oka Towers, awesome spot to live. Hope you enjoy your time on Guam, I did.
Your 2-bedroom in Tumon for $1500 is much cheaper than my 1-bedroom apartment in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Mind you, my apartment building doesn't have a pool. My unit has no balcony. The building was built in 1957 and no central air-conditioning. I park on the street. Gasoline prices right now in L.A. is about $4.29 regular unleaded. Doritos is the same price as Guam about close to $4.00 a bag.
Rent in Guam is still cheaper than rent in NJ, Paying about 1,300 for a little studio. Plus cheap steak and reasonably priced avocados, i'll get the gone to guam sign ready.
I'm not a retired military but a service connected veteran. I think we are able to use the military exchange and commissary. I was there about a month ago and didn't think the price was that bad. Transportation is limited. There is the trolley but it's not reliable. It's also not cheap.
I live in Alaska so I’d be used to the prices. We are thinking about moving in 2-4 years. My family used to live there many moons ago. Rent here for a 2 bedroom 1 bath $1350. We also pay fuel as well so since gas prices are higher you can imagine how much that is each month. Better off buying a house which is what we did.
Yup, yup aaand yup! However! Been here for 20+ years and I will not have it any other way...Price you pay to live in paradise, aka a tropical island 😉 Very thorough video, great job!
TRUE!!!! For example...I'm into Nerf...and here is an example of the ridiculous prices... $5 for three Nerf Zombie Strike Arrows...but at our Guam K-Mart...they are $15.99...clearance price $15.00...they should get rid of the Jones Act...outdated law . From Investopedia: . "The Jones Act is a federal law that regulates maritime commerce in the United States. The Jones Act requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on ships that are built, owned, and operated by United States citizens or permanent residents. The Jones Act is Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, which provided for the maintenance of the American merchant marine."
Hello. I'm also from Columbus, OH !! How has it been living in Guam for 2 years, on a daily basis ? Is it easy to transition from Columbus ? The weather is constant ~ 85 degrees F. Was it hard to find a place to live ? What are the best areas (safe) and close to places. Thanks for the reply. -- RS.
My dear friend that is truly a nightmare, move to Puerto Rico and you pay half or less of all you have said. A nice beautiful home and save $400 to $600 a month. Food is a lot cheaper here a half gallon of fresh milk $2.25, meat 75% cheaper and the rest here 50% cheaper. Transportation everywhere but having you own is better. Gas right now $3.08 a gallon. And most we too are US proud American citizen.🇺🇲🇵🇷
Thats a good idea... I would need to research the price of all those things. My wife and I sold all of our stuff before moving here. We only brought 4 suitcases lol
You should make a video about vehicle suggestions. I am bringing a RAM which having it serviced would probably cost 3 times what it costs in mainland since all the parts would have to be shipped.
So uhm! For your milk!…you may wanna consider going for the boxed kind if you haven’t already since making this video. It’s shelf stable and it’s relatively cheaper. I get the Anchor brand
I'm on social security and SSI I'm 60 years old what would a house cost to buy two bedroom one bath and do they have Amazon deliver Do they have cars dealerships Do you have to pay taxes on the properties and what you own
Great video. My dad is retired Air Force. We lived in Guam back in the late 70s, early 80s. Miss that place. No. Military don't have to spend all of their BAH or lose it. A lot of Military move off base because they'll get that extra money. They can live for less, and pocket the left over. We did that in Arizona. We lived off base. Got $1400 (back in the early 2000s). Our rent was only $900. The rest went to utilities and food.
Hi, I have a question I’m having trouble finding an answer for. I’m on the fence about Guam or CNMI, I have a live aboard sail boat, would you happen to know if Guam has any marinas? Possibly any that rent out annual slips with power and water hook ups?
Thank you for sharing. I am interested in traveling to Guam as a traveling nurse, will someone please drop some info about the hospitals here and which agencies work with Guam hospitals?. I've been watching You tube on Guam and really love it. Thank you in advance, Alexa
Hey Alexa, my wife worked as a travel nurse when we first moved to the island. She can help with any questions you may have. Send her a message on Instagram @refined.wellness.by.megan and she will definitely help you out.

Hey great video...I am being sent by the military from California to Guam here in June...do you think the prices are insanely higher overall than California? Gas prices here are about the same as what you mentioned in your video.
what about military base PX. do you think they have the same price as US? because i'm a hundred percent disabled veteran i can access us military base PX
I believe, the prices on the military base are similar to the prices in the States. I haven't been to the base PX myself, but several military members have told me the prices are similar.
Thanks for sharing a realistic take on life in Guam. I'm looking for a seasonal basecamp in Asia - somewhere I can set up a small tourism business and travel to visit family and clients through the Asia-Pacific region. I've lived all over the world so I don't care about cost of living as much as what people typically spend on tourism. What I want to know is how much are property prices and the demographics of people who live there and tourists who visit. Is it super wealthy people like in the Seychelles or budget travellers like in the Philippines and Bali? I'm going to try to contact the tourism board there see what they can tell me.
Although I don't have any hard facts to back it up, I've heard the majority of the tourists that come here from Japan, Korea and Taiwan (our primary markets) would be considered middle to upper-middle class. Guam isn't as expensive as Hawaii, which some consider a more premiere location (I might disagree with that lol) but its also not the cheapest option.
I will be moving there from Texas in a few weeks. I heard you say it rains allot this time of year. Is there flooding? Should I stay away from a first floor apartment?
For me I’d like to know the prices on booze and the nightlife there. I enjoy going to bars to play pool and get to know the local characters in my home city and I feel like that would be an easy way to get to know more about the local culture. That and who doesn’t like a nice beer after a hard days work lol
Hmm... well, I don’t have any kids, so unfortunately, I don’t know too much about the daycare situation. I know there are several daycares on the island (including one run by someone at my church). It’s readily available, but I can’t speak to the pricing.
$900/month for 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment??? I'm from Stamford, Connecticut, in ritzy Fairfield County, 30 miles from New York City. I would KILL for that deal! haha Double for rent for me would place the apartment in the $5000 range in Guam, so that definitely doesn't apply to me, thankfully.
Food at Supermarkets are more expensive in Guam because mostly everything are being Shipped into the Island 🤷🏽♀ from all over, but, if you shop wisely, you can get your Bang for your Buck $... As for Restaurants & Fast food establishments, you can find reasonable prices... As for Gas 🤣 Good Luck 🤦🏽♀ Military are lucky, way cheaper in the Basement... My wife and I planned a trip to Japan last year, but we didn't get to go because of the virus. Hoping to be able to visit soon. Any news as to when Japan will open its borders? Maybe after the Olympics?
It sounds okay. I'm debating on moving to Guam later this year to get a covid vaccine then move on to hong kong / macau if they have a vaccine passport by that time.
You don't say why you left the US for Guam. You seem to like it. Your prices are now history as inflation and supply-chain issues bite into our wallets. Best of luck, brother!
I was looking to move / retire to SE Asia and was going to use Guam as a jumping off point. I'm moving because it's too damn expensive. To hell with guam. Philippians here I come
If your on Guam you should get a job as a government contractor you will have navy exchange privileges or get a job as U.S. govererment civil service state side hire yo have commissary privileges
My wife and I love living here. Its been a great year and a half. We aren't sure how long we will stay. We might stay here forever or may move some time in the future. Its hard to say.

Pretty much anywhere would be a good break from cali
I'm a mixture of relieved and surprised to see that it's comparable to or cheaper than California.
you are right....military housing stipends leads to higher home prices and rent for locals...
Thanks, I’m interviewing tonight for a 4-6 month contract out there. This is great to know.

She won't regret it lol. I give it my hardy recommendation lol
Some very good videos about Guam.
What are the job titles/positions/ careers you and your wife have on the island?
Still cheaper than living in Southern California. I'm looking at retiring to either Guam or Thailand.
Great videos! Appreciate expanding my knowledge on certain sites of my island home. Keep up the great work 🤙
Thanks, will do!
Hafå adai! Thanks for visiting my home🇬🇺
Hafa adai! I love your island. Thanks for watching
Kind of wish these prices were still true. I honestly can't believe how much prices has jumped in such a short amount of time...

Great video on cost of living. Consider doing a cost breakdown of your move to Guam. Cost and process of shipping your possessions? Vehicle?
Thats a good idea... I would need to research the price of all those things. My wife and I sold all of our stuff before moving here. We only brought 4 suitcases lol
@@tayloredstory8241 right on! Probably best way to do it
Loved the video, what about the availability and prices of electronic automobiles? Is their a ev charging infrastructure there?
I grew up and coming down from l.a. so high prices is a theme out here specially compared to Ohio so I think I'll be ok 👍🏼
You should make a video about vehicle suggestions. I am bringing a RAM which having it serviced would probably cost 3 times what it costs in mainland since all the parts would have to be shipped.
So why would anyone want to live in Guam, what is the upside?
No air pollution on island than P.I.
So uhm! For your milk!…you may wanna consider going for the boxed kind if you haven’t already since making this video. It’s shelf stable and it’s relatively cheaper. I get the Anchor brand
Very helpful, but we’re moving from NYC, so the prices made us laugh lol

How much are cable TV, Internet, and cell phone services?
And, is the Internet any good there as compared to your previous home?
Internet? Satellite? Considering moving from CONUS to Guam for Army contract.
Anyone knows if there's some sort of aviation business, island charters, flight schools ?

Hello do you feel the cost of living matches the average income for locals?
Unfortunately it does not. Dept of Labor dies studies for wages in our area, however those standards compare us to other surrounding islands
Definitely not. I’m a local resident on Guam for 6 years and I feel it does not match the average income for us making
Agreed with the other comments. It does not match
