Philippines have more struggles than Guam. Guamanians are more fortunate than the Philippines because they don’t have to worry about third world problems.

Quality of life is better in the Philippines. Without base access this guy would be hurting in Guam

I lived on Guam for 3 years from 8 to 11 years old. My father is retired Air Force and a Vietnam Veteran. I learned to swim at the USO beach, not sure if it’s still called that or not. I miss the beautiful, clear, aqua water (not the coral on my feet though, haha) the food and the beautiful temperatures. Would love to go back and visit again at some point. I’ve heard it has changed a lot due to a typhoon taking out most of the island a few years after my family left. Thanks for the video, I will be watching for more. Best of luck to you and your wife. Guam's problem is that they have allowed too much foreign (Japanese, Korean, Chinese) money to flow in here buying up all the apts/condos... and now single family homes. The other issue here is that Guam is a social welfare state - overly dependent on Federal funds. As a result, slumlords are in control and regular Guamanians can no longer afford housing here.

Good video, I retired and moved Mactan Island and my wife was Samar. I moved to Guam so my son could get a better education and free medical care for all of us. Dental is the one thing I will fly back to PI. Having been a expat in Korea also; cost of living was close to Guam if you have that military affiliation to use to base. I would fly back to Korea from PI for commissary and PX/BX/NEX shopping. I would get my medical care done too so I get the free medicines although medical is cheap in PI. You can't be free.

Just leave your attitude, negative comments and sarcasm in plane once you arrive! We are good people and live to a different drum, more reserve then most people. Have an open mind and enjoy the island lifestyle, beaches, sun, food, BBQ’s, parties and fiesta’s! You do this you’ll enjoy the hospitality of the locals, be accepted and enjoy the island and life like the people in this video! Many a times a haoli wife comes out and complains about everything under the Sun! Give her a one way ticket back and enjoy the life and travel to Manila and other Asian countries and REALLY ENJOY LIFE visiting and returning to recharge the batteries and enjoy the American life Island style. Being a non-veteran that supermarket tour just proved to me I could never afford to retire there with my soc sec and meager pension. The only thing that was the same price as here was Spam $2.99, everything else was about double. The number you showed from Numbeo for a single guy was $1,309 per month not including rent. Unless there are some really cheap apartments suitable for an American guy your monthly income would need to be over $2000. That lets me out. I guess I'll have to wait until central Luzon opens up!

Actually you could live on 1309 month in Guam including rent but it would be tight if your non military. First there are two-bedroom places for 750. IF you want one bedroom you can get it around 500. As to utilties, I pay 150 a month though I only use air when I am home. So lets say you have a studio for 600 add 150 that's 750 Add internet at 100 thats 950. Add 75 for cell phone, thats 1025. Okay that leaves food and transportation. Get a moped, yes it rains here in Guam but in year only 3 times such has been issue (have raincoat). Also as far as buying grocies I have zero problem putting groceries on moped. Anycase go to LA cycles it costs 1100 for moped, insurance via Calvos which includes appartment rental (have to have it) is 160 a year. Average gas bill 20 a month. So for first year 125 a month for transportation (including price of moped paid over 12 months). So now we are to a total of 1150. That leaves you 250 for food and other expenses. Its tight, but duable. My cost of living is tad higher but thats because i have two bedroom appartment in prime location near the beach. My per month cost is 1600 covering all my base expenses including food (between 100 to 120 a month buying at payless and cost u less). Though I am living confortably and enjoying life so my expenses that include eating out at restaurants (I do 39 buffet once a month), going to water park, and going to bars such as Jimmy Dees, I live confortably at 2000 a month

I now live in the South/Central part of Maine. From what I see in your video, the cost of living in this part of Maine is similar to the cost of living (excluding gasoline) in Guam.
I actually live not far from the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. When that base was open, we had a fair amount of Filipino dining options. When the base was BRACed, a lot of those places closed. Sad....

Interesting perspective. That said if you look around Guam isnt as expensive as folks think. You can even find small houses for rent for 700 but make sure your good friends with neighbors. That said, I pay 1100 a month for 2 bedroom apartment with washer and drier right across from beach (from my door to sand about 3 minutes). Internet is expensive as compared to mainland. I pay 107. Utilities (water and electric) costs me 150 a month; though I only run air when I am in my appartment (takes 2 minutes to cool down). I do have my own transportation. I drive moped. Mopeds are great for guam. I pay 16 dollars month for gas. Insurance which includes moped and my appartment rental is 160. After, all my bills, insurance, gas, all comes to 1550. Add about 100 to 300 for food costs. Add 200 for movies, relaxing at beach bar, you can live 2000 dollars with no complaints but same time no huge luxeries. As far as stores, Cost U Less is great, company is connected to Costco indirectly. Payless not bad, ,key is specials and their reduced price. Now if you have base access thats great. Gas is 1.50 less and food costs are on average not 30 to 40 percent cheaper but more like 50 percent cheaper at commesary. The Exchange is closer to in town costs but still a bit cheaper. For some reason tomatos and cucumbers are cheaper at exchange than commesary.

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  3 роки тому

The best perspective anyone could give is via a testimonial like yours. I know there are cheaper places to rent, but you just have to beat a few jungle bushes to find them. I find tomatoes cheaper at Payless than at the commissary. Thanks for the input, I'm sure many will find it useful.

@@TropicShade No problem. Having base access sure does help. I do go to Payless frequently. I live just short walk away. I mostly go there to refill my water, look at reduced price stuff, and specials. Cost U less, also simular.
Yeah, Payless as a whole is cheaper than commissary when comes to tomatoes. I asked about that and that's because Commissary airfreights tomatoes in. But you go to the Exchange gas station either at the main naval base or one at the Naval hospital and tomatoes are 1.89 a pound. Cheaper than Payless unless on special (right now Roma tomatoes are on special I think 1.29). Cucumbers at Exchange Gas Stations than at Commesary or Payless. The last I paid was about $1.60 at the exchange gas station. Also, things like Lettuce unless they are on sale at Payless Commesary is so much cheaper. 1.19 per head for Romane Lettuce at Commesary while Payless is $2.59lb (one head is about 1lb)

Finding a ton of good information in your videos. Super useful and super relatable.
    However.
I caught the part about the gas price, as stated 'under the current administration'.
I know we have a supercharged, divided electorate. I sense I am probably on the opposite side that you are, that's cool. We both have homes in Phils, and wives from there, and I most definitely relate to your appreciation of Asian life. Fist bump!
But... Presidents do not influence the price of gas. They just don't. I had lots of complaints about "the last administration" for a lot of things, but whenever gas prices were higher than I liked, or not, that was never up to him, even if he claimed it was when it was low. (Presidents do that.) I don't blame any of them, because the market dictates the price. It's just the way it is.
That said, I'm eating up your content like crazy, and don't be surprised to see I've touched down with my family and want to get together for a beer. :)

Food was way out there because it has to be shipped in by boat. Rent is mot as bad as LA but close. Electric was 3x's what I am paying here since all the houses are cement wall to wall and is nothing more than an oven so the AC is working hard to keep things livable. All that aside. Also if you like off roading there are some nice spots. Great hiking with nice waterfalls. I lived there in the 1950s when I was a kid for 3 years. My dad had a civilian job on Anderson AF Base. You couldn't be a tourist back then as Guam was closed by the government and you couldn't go there unless you had government clearance. From time to time a Japanese soldier would come out of the boondocks and give up not realizing that the war was over. Strangely enough I later started working on cargo ships and Guam was a regular stop for us. Like you said in the video the Jones Act keeps the cargo coming in on American flagged ships. Usually I would rent a car for the day and just drive around for a while to take in the sights and bring back some old memories but a whole lot of things are different now. having lived both in the states and GU, i definitely had it easier financially bc i was on a weekly pay and it was quick and easy for me to find a home and own a car.. but i missed the home feeling from GU so i had to move back. the thing i miss the most was gas prices 😭

What's your advice for using Guam a home base for traveling cheaply? It seems flights from Guam to Australia, for example, are a few thousand dollars.

If you must live in the U.S., then Guam is a great base for traveling SE or East Asia. Flying to Ausralia though... it might be cheaper to originate elswhere like Manila or Singapore.

@@TropicShade I've lived in Guam for many years. Graduated high school here after arriving from Okinawa in '72. Spent over 13 years in LA for college and work but eventually returned here. I retired here last year because of the Pandemic and will travel from here to PI and use PI as a stepping stone to visit other countries as well as the different islands in PI. Guam will always be my base and the weather has become better over the years. We haven't had a major typhoon in over 13 years. Maybe it's the climate change? If you're single, you might be able to hook up with some homes that have single rooms for rent and drastically reduce your rent.
