loved your tech school and hope to make it over there one day and learn from you. I love cars and have a sioft spot for ford f100 and utes.
Hope your going well with your new setup

i’ve been working at a pawn shop with all of these kinds of tools for years, and now i’m gearing up to buy a 50 year-old vehicle that needs a new paint job. this is all such great, important information - from the tools, their specific functions and favorable traits, down to the techniques. thank you so much!!
I got one for you a honda civic eg hatchback needs a paint job when can you do it
Edit didn't notice you were woman... marry me
@@secredeathsaying eg hatch scared her away
You’re the man.
Thank you Pete.
You never ask for anything, and just give a wealth of knowledge.
Thank you, very much.
I don't want to ask for anything because all I want in life is a roof over my head, food in my mouth and my bills paid.. I make my videos for people to learn from.. A Thank You is good enough for me! Thanks for watching ZED!
Wow, I’ve just realised I’ve been watching your videos for nine years. That’s a lot of learning done. I still remember little Bruno..🙂
Ya me to was thinking of him the other day
Omg I haven’t seen Pete in years! Glad I found you again!
Good tip! One thing I like to do when sanding hoods on the car is pop the hood latch in addition to tape so sander won't hit fenders
Good tip but want Poppin da hood as u suggest allow for all of the dust (trash) to go inside the engine bay and all over it?
Gotcha, see what saying. Saving time and clean up
I have done my share of body work for a very thorough shop owner and wow there is so much more to it than anyone could imagine. The master/owner always said I was good but I think he was just a positive type guy that liked to try to inspire being there was so many things he could see and feel that I couldn’t. But had I started young like him it might have been different. The best of the best start there trade at a very young age. We both love motorcycles and both started riding at about 4/5yrs old and i have to say I had him there. Lol
Big Fan Pete! I did body work back in the day. And loved it. For some reason I always get nervous when I go to paint. Why you ask? Well there is so many variables, Temperature, Mixture of Paint, Air Pressure, Gun Set Up, Etc. And really have not had a lot practice with that. But enjoy watching your Videos. Thanks for all you do! Big Jim. Chardon, Ohio
Prep a sheet metal tester and test before you spray the car...be sure you are dialed in before you move to the car...
@@warrenweapon Agreed to that. The inside of my shop door is many colors.,. LoL
Thanks so much for these excellent videos. I am in the process of restoring a 1975 MGB. The bodywork is finished and I have used the trunk lid for practice. I've made and then fixed several errors. Now I need to strip the base and the layers of primer because I had not given the primer enough time to cure. Lesson learned and, once again, thanks for all of your guidance.
Thanks Pete I start a new shop this Monday it’s good to freshen up on a video
Great Videos: your videos make my wife and me smile. Is my summary good/complete?
- Finish sanding repairs & rest of original clear coat w/400 (assume perfect now) on entire panel(s). It’s OK that existing clear coat stays, as long as it is 400 sanded.
-Clean. -Epoxy Prime Bare Metal. -Paint entire areas/panels just sanded w/ 1 stage paint. -2K Clear Coat, etc.
Hope I got this right & get an A from your classes! I’m a restorer not a painter/body guy. Thanks. Want to do some professional small/tiny repairs.
Thank You for sharing your sanding experience.
This is very helpful.🙏🏼
Great work Pete. Always have inspiring words, and your knowledge is gold.
about to finally put all the knowledge you passed down into my Toyota pickup!
New sub. I appreciate the old school technique and advice. Thank you man
love the 70's vibe
Pete you should do a video on using a foam interface pad and when they can be used. Thanks for the video keep up with the hard work.
Foam Interface?? Maybe I need to learn something NEW! You got me interested Ill check into that.. Thanks Sketchy!
Thanks for the video & advice 🙏🏽
I think for a small or medium sized car a short throw sander with a rougher sand paper to cut through paint a less rough sand paper to smoothen out and even the surface & a light sand paper to get the swirl marks would be my plan of action after that you can use a small 4 inch roller with an oil based car paint for $50-170 maybe $200 bucks if your on a budget💰 it can be done D.I.Y 🧑🏽🏭
I like this guy really seems down to earth
Always appreciate all the helpful info you give us here ty pete and minnie..
Cool MFP, keep em coming!
Thanks Dbelcourt!
Sweet info man! I'm making an attempt to have a bare metal finish on my Jeep Wrangler... Have been using a random orbital, but have been using it wrong. Instead of getting more coarse grit sand paper/net, I was pushing harder to get rid of deep scratches (tried a different method of paint removal before and REALLY scarred the surface). As soon as I'm off work, am going to use your technique from 60 grit up to 600-1000 grit to get that mirror finish! Awesome video, thank you again!
Thank you Pete 🙏🏽
thanks, Pete for another good show/vid....big fan
Before anyone thinks you always use a 'short throw' sander like I did for fine grit sanding the 3M rep slammed me and explained that the 'Trizact' line of papers was designed specifically for long-throw traditional D/A palm sander. Which I didn't know before that.
great job pete
Nice video, to the point. I have just bought a new Mirka Sander which is mains powered instead of air, comes with an extraction unit which really keeps dust to an absolute minimum. Thanks for taking the time post your videos.
Thanks Pete!
Thanks for all the good information my friend Pete!
No problem Robert.. Thanks for watching!
Man I need this video thanks pete
The money saving bit sounds good))
Saving money is always a good deal Jim.. Hope things are going good for you!

@D.I.Y. AUTO SCHOOL Hanging out for my T shirts. Spread your name
all over town )) oi oi oi
I just started at a euro classic car shop. Got any tips? One question i have is arent you supposed to wet sand for a finish and i like 600 for fine finish not 180 or 320 idk just think it looks better nut like i said idk i just remeber the basics from highschool i 35 now so was like lots of years ago. Anyway i like ur video and i like the fact u talked about the guide coat i have rattle cans of it and its a great tool.
i accidently did the left side of my car with 80 grit...i gotta go 180 220 an 800 grit to smoothen down those scratches right? Love your videos im just new to this but hopefully i fix my car!!
It's good mate I'm glad you're getting there
Great knowledge brotha thank you!!
Just subscribed to your channel also received my SWRC MOAB UTAH tee shirt today 👍👍 I am going to order more thanks
good video video mate been looking for something like this :)
Great job
Good shit
Do you recommend painting the car during the autumn , winter season ?
thank you
for your help
How do you go about the dust produced? Is there any sort of shop vacuum you can recommend or do you suggest I keep on top of sweeping. Cheers 🍻
Great video but not quite DYI as I thought it would be I don't seem to have access to either one of those sanders ? Im ex communicato.
Starts at 8:10
thank you pete u are so helpfull
Great tip. Thank you very much.
Thanks for watching Guillermo... Hope it helps you out!
Great video! I understand you should use the Short throw DA to save sandpaper, so when should you use the other larger DA?
To sand down body filler im guessing.
@@Yophillips3272 what i mean is how do you know which one is appropriate for which job? and if i could only buy 1 as a DIY beginner which one would it be
I always find it amusing that people helping others use the slang and jargon associated with their field. Yet the FEATHERING OUT is a term most would not understand. Also SHORT THROW? So everytime its mentioned some one is going, What is he talking about? Feathering, Short Throw? Oh you mean the size of the circular pattern the sander is designed to travel? LOL. But wait, Do you get a duster that has feathers in it and then stroke it against the car body? Short feathers for Short throw? LOL But its not just the slang feathering term or short throw being used here, its everyday slang people mention but that doesn't explain anything to a beginner. It is many words that we know of and learn when we are doing it everyday, but the novice or beginner listening in has no clue. So are we an effective team? No not really. Great stuff here. I'm guessing that people will look up the words they don't know...hopefully. Or perhaps hear them enough to put two and two together to make 3!
Speechless. Top bloke Pete. Wish I could buy u beers 🍺
Is a dual action the same as a random orbital?
Hey Pete.... what is the secret for painting basecoat, clear coat over single stage? Last time I tried to shot clear over single stage.... It all peel off in a few weeks.....
Love the shirt! I have a 50 merc couple with traditional flames!!
Good tips Pete..I should get one of those palm DA's.
I guess winter has hit over there.. Everytime summer hits here I think of you and the AUSSIES! Hope things are going good Ziggy... When I get to MOAB, you and your wife will have to come out for a few weeks to visit...
@@myfriendpete Yeah getting colder now Pete...If things ever square up here and the financial situations improve we'd love to come visit.
I have always wanted to paint my own car
I am about to get my chance. I always learn a lot watching the channel. Thanks and keep up the good work.
My Friend Pete! After the DA on the repair areas, will you sand the whole hood by block sanding, then paint? Or do you apply Primer to the whole hood, sand then paint? On a side note, I have been watching your videos for years now, and I still have no idea what paper to use.
Maybe while you settle in Moab, you can make a video guide on sand papers, that would be very helpful. Thanks again Pete!
I'm digging the old school phone. Nice video.
I have that phone so nobody will ask to use it! Y2K Generations don't even know how to dial out on it!!!!
Can you do this on rounded panels like. A Harley gas tank?
Hey Pete, are you not priming the whole hood due to single stage paint? I tried what you just showed a year ago and I have dark spots where I primed vs where I didnt but that job was all base clear. Thanks for the videos. I cant wait to eat my am oatmeal at my desk at work with my new SWRNC coffee mug! While wearing my SWRNC under my shirt and tie! Hahahhaha
I’d do a primer sealer coat right before your base, to avoid light dark spots
Thanks Micheal, I think I will be redoing this job very soon! Thanks for the tip!
"Ring!!!!!" "Hello......," "Uh, I want a pizza to go and no anchovies!" "No anchovies? You've got the wrong man. I spell my name, Danger!" "What?"
Hey my friend Pete, is your short throw a true dual action or is a random action one? Your friend John from Northern Ontario Canada.
Hi new subscriber here. I am ready to purchase an air compressor and hvlp. A recommendation if any and not sure what psi is necessary for compressor. Thank you again for your teaching videos. Chris.
Nice work Pete
Thanks Buck! Im hoping to see you guys in Moab someday!
D.I.Y. AUTO SCHOOL Oh you can count on it! We will be stopping by.
Also what pattern should i use when hand sanding or block sanding whatever u call it....i like to use my hans for the snall spaces i feel like getts into the curves better i have been working on older cars. I was told by boss the x pattern and
I remember back in the day, many bodyshops used 180 hand sanding before painting 😟😟I would see bad ass paint jobs with allot of sand scratches.Half a sheet of 180 dry to sand a whole car.
Times have changed for sure Filiberto. I remember Hand Sanding a car all the way to 3000 before buffing! Now it's all done with a da pad! Makes life easier for sure!
@@diyautoschool lol when wetsanding I still hand sand with 3000 before buffing
Nice video pete
THanks Yalcinbey!
Your friend paul suggests if u have not already , go to playlists , on the diy auto school site .... check out the 69 chevelle make over or big paw 64 chevelle complete paint job .....
I watched you c10 paint video. Wow, that turned out show quality! What paint gun and paints do you recommend? Thx
Chroma base is really good and 5 star clear with medium activator
What kind of primer use in this project I didn’t know if you made a video explaining primers kind and what’s the diferent!!! Regular 1k 2k filler high built etc
Getter done my friend pete
I am sure this will piss you off Pete, but since I am learning I need to ask. When you primed this did you use rattle can primer or your gun? I'm not trying to be insulting, I am truly trying to learn.
No Rattle can primer over here! ALL RATTLE CAN PRIMER IS LAQUARE BASE.. We want to stay away from that.. I sprayed it with my gun using High Build 2K urathane primer... Thanks for watching.
Excellent, thank you for your videos.
Hey pete what do you typically use for guide coat
You can use any cheap black paint and save a lot of money
Short throw, is betta but v lad said be careful with that.
I love your vidios. I am restoring FJ40 and need to know the process of painting the power train after cleaning it.The primer name and paint name.
Thank you.
Hey I have a question, I have some z3 style fenders that I'm wanting to fill the vents on to make it an oem looking fender. What would be the best method to fill them? I don't really want to fill that much with body filler unless there isn't any other option. I've seen people use spray foam but that sounds chintzy, what would you do? Thanks.
Just add fiber glass patches then sand them down
So wait, Let me make sure I understand, So you used a " Short Throw " DA Sander?
Thank you Yoda
HA HA Big D! Thanks for watching!
I have a question. I have a pearl black 2020 civic and need to touch up the bottom of the drivers side door half. I tried back masking but it left a thin line. Do you recommend I base out the bottom half then clear the entire door or recommend repainting the entire door to get it to blend.
What grit though?
did you use wax & grease remover first?i don't care who can do anything fast they made mistakes too.i like working slow i get things done right in the first place no re-doing it again.can't afford mistakes & skipping few things.hate loosing money & profits.i think twice.
Hey pete what i do is just use a red scoff pad and agitate it 🤷
Hi. We are painting a truck with Dynacoat Opticryl C900 RM (single stage), prepared 3:1 paint:thinner, and noticed that the paint is sticky after 1 week of application on the roof, but it is perfect dry and hard on the hood. Any ideas why the roof ended up sticky?
How many liter of your compresor?
The death of paint stripper is an absolute tragedy
How do I keep my metal flake from standing up when I spray it. How do I get my flakes to lay down?
This guy is hilarious.
thanks pete
Hey there Scott! Thanks for watching buddy...
Nice
How do I get ahold of him I got a 95 Nissan hardbody I want to restore
Okay question I'm doing custom hood louvers on my car, and custom fog light covers I built into my plastic bumper. So I get all the Bondo on it and everything I'm trying to get it smooths out and some of these corners I can't get down in. it's very frustrating I've tried to do it with the Dremel I've tried to do it with the da have tried to do it by hand. I'm still a student and I'm still learning this stuff would you help me please? I don't want to leave looking like crap I want to be able to smooth it out.
I bought a nice short throw sander after watching a previous video of yours. Haven't used it yet but i will soon
You'll LOVE IT!
Gonna viisit u in utah pete once you are settled in im here in vegas !!
That would be GREAT -- Patriot. Ill be waiting..
really fast talks for 2 minutes
Is this the Over Engineered European car that the while front of the engine needed replacing?
No this is another over engineered pile of shit just like the other one..
Is that a w201?
I can't figure out why you don't get a big exhaust fan hooked up right in front of you stay safe and don't say you're wearing a mask it does gets everywhere in your eyes you know it
I purchased a used one as the piece is a bit pricey, but the machine ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6fbm3cHBd7CNTjk5D-dwYe9c9tCB9ZN has surpassed my expectations. We sand small parts by hand often, sized around 1"x1/2," and specifically look for a piece that's designed to be vertical. The motor has plenty of torque and great speed settings. The only inconvenience I had is that the disk measures 5" where we trim 6" stick-and-sand disks down easily by mounting it then cutting with a box cutter.
Pete how you doing in Dallas with those thugs on the loose?
Im NOT! Staying right here in my prison yard minding my own business.... Thanks for asking though!
i have a Hutchins palm sander im not sure what im doing wrong but when im sanding its like right away i get swirls in my paint. and primer drives me nuts, could the issue be i use a velco pad instead of the PSA and I buy 3m paper. great video
It might be a LONG THROW Sander and NOT a SHORT THROW JOB! Just because it's a palm sander doesn't mean it's a short throw.. Check out the mm throw on it vs. other brands and see if thats where your issues are.. I have an older hutchins da sander and it's a long throw job.. Good luck
What is the other sander
If u handsand edges n stuff first the d.a gets all the handsand Mark's out ..
