This is one of my favorite videos about old Minecraft, because it's not a critique on modern Minecraft, it doesn't put down new Minecraft or people who enjoy it, but it simultaneously makes clear why old Minecraft is so different and good.
Sorry I’m late lol. Thanks for the comment, I didn’t want to put down or compare the two versions so much. Both old and modern MC feel like wildly different experiences and I like parts of both of them, but feel like classic minecraft has far more emotional impact since I played it early on.
Exactly. Modern MC has world-building, storytelling, and friendly mobs that are there to help, while in old MC, you were just...alone. The only mobs were prey or predators, and the world was empty aside from the biomes and forests, beaches and caves.
Modern Minecraft should really add a beta world generation option, or even make it a very large biome you can find in your world. The same endless biome with only abstract mountains and floating islands as landmarks is such a different vibe from the dull, realistic modern world gen that somehow feels more repetitive despite having a million more biomes and tree types than beta .
This was a flashback episode. So many many many hours spent in some version of 1.6, mining, building, exploring. This was when I got friends into it, and everyone had their own idea of what made a fun game. Your video is a wistful remembrance.
As far as I'm concerned early Minecraft is a horror game. I started playing in Beta 1.3 and I remember spending the first night blocked in inside the side of a mountain, terrified the mobs were gonna get me. When day broke I dug out, checked the menus and realized I had been on Peaceful Mode the whole time. Even without mobs the game was scary. The game is not near so scary now, especially when you've got full enchanted armor and tools. I play on Bedrock version now but I want to get Java version and downgrade to these really old Indev and Infdev versions to see what they're like and piss myself when a mob sneaks up behind me. The soundtrack is basically perfect. The only problem is it barely plays. You can go 20 minutes or more sometimes without hearing any music. It's the reason why, despite me loving the soundtrack, I often had it turned off and had music playing on youtube while playing the game. I'm so glad you had tons of friends to play this game with. Growing up I only had my brother to play this game with as my friends at the time were those kind of guys that were like "retro graphics = bad" despite them having played retro games as kids. As far as they were concerned when a new game came out with better graphics the games they were playing before were old and thus it was embarrassing to continue playing those games. Because of that since Minecraft had these retro graphics they considered the game not worth their time and refused to even try it out. Oh well their loss.
Yeah new mc ain’t as creepy in part, to me at least, with how much easier the game is and how the world itself is much more predictable. The weird old world gen and strange behavior of the mob AI made it an unpredictable exciting experience
@@Nikos. I honestly despise the new terrain generation, it's way too mountanous, there are no flat areas, I think the world gen would be so much cooler if only mountains were rare, also the fast that a lot of biomes are height dependent is also anoying, why can't we have swamps in high places? swamps irl can be in high places
I play only on large biomes worlds, I think it helps a lot with how consistent the world is, in the past biomes fit together nowadays they look so weird next to each other, but when they are really big you simply don't see them next to each other, though I still think old minecraft gen was better even considering large biome worlds
I went to go explore my 4-5 year old survival world when I was about to leave I left the mine area that always scared me, I herd a door open with a cave sound and I instantly left.
Mojang officially lost me when Jeb called Minecraft a "medieval fantasy" game during Minecon Earth 2018. Minecraft was never a "medieval fantasy" game. Minecraft is its own thing. A platform to build to your heart's content and explore the themeless but beautiful block terrain. Modern Minecraft is a wildly different vibe from old Minecraft, and anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.
Yeah old minecraft kind of had hints of medieval fantasy but was drenched in the abstract and survival mechanics that muddied the waters and made the game feel wholly unique from everything else out there
Classic Minecraft is the best Minecraft, I find the new versions are bloated with too much content (Which might sound like I'm complaining about content, when we live in a era where most games launch with barely any content). But something about it was just, humble and awesome.
I could not put this game down in 2013 and 2014. I still hate mining, jump scares on top of going into the caves or strip mining for 8 hours only to find 4 or less diamonds wasted away my youth. I still miss it but Minecraft has drifted so far from what it once was.
For me, it was so exciting to see a cave entrance...yet terrifying! I remember playing it all of on spring break with my youngest son, we built the neatest city! So fun!!

I think I haven't played for about a year and some. I started back in 2014 at 1.7.10 version and I still feels the best version. Although future versions with all the "items" added make the game feel more "real" and welcoming.
"Half-remembered dream" is a good descriptor of nostalgia. The unsettling and familiar mix as we wander a landscape devoid of the same hustle and bustle we remember as kids. Running around by yourself on a map from an old (often multiplayer) game hits that funny bone in our brain that makes us mourn our youth, think of friends who are only remembered, and the distance between Then and Now. Nostalgia can be weirdly addicting, even for a time or place we never experienced - which may explain why Liminal Spaces are popular across various age groups. As depressing as it may seem, it's good to be reminded that life is ethereal and fleeting. Our memories, even if only we remember them, are special.
Its weird to think about, but I think there is gonna be a lot of younger kids that just do not understand how original and impactful Minecraft was when it first came out and was at its peak. It was unheard of for a small indie game like that to be as culturally huge as it was. By now, Minecraft has been owned by one of the biggest companies in the world longer than is hasn't.
Yeah… new mc is cool and it’s good to see the game super popular, but the alien feel to new mc was unrivaled when it came out. I loved the mystery of it all, back when youtube was just figuring out how to make gaming videos
It makes me tear up , how good was 2013- and before- Minecraft.... Was this the best game of all time ? It definitely was a Different game , in a good way... Perhaps ...not what anyone asked for... But what everyone of US needed.
Minecraft probably is one of the best games of all time considering it can be made into pretty much any game. I never realized how good the early 2010’s was until now too
I remember the first time I played minecraft 10 years ago I actually didn't want to go mining because I was scared. I also was learning crafting recipes on my own so that was fun and not fun lol.
Old Minecraft was a lonely and mysterious experience. Filled with somber, yet haunting moments of exploring deep caves alone. It reminded me of a show like Lost, especially since back then when the player always start spawn on to a beach like a stranded castaway. It really made you wonder why this world was so devoid of other people but filled with monsters. The balance of the eerie mystery, but cute derpy and bright graphics created such a great contrast. The bright colors and silly graphics disarmed the senses to then catch you off guard with the darkness and danger of night. I really wished they leaned into exploring more of that mystic and contrast with the subsequent updates. The Adventure Update was the truly the last time we saw the devs play into those themes with the additions of ruins, abandon libraries, and deserted mine shafts. It is a shame we never saw more mysterious and eerie ideas implemented into the game because i always felt like the ominous atmosphere was a big reason it was so appealing. Nothing felt better then stumbling on a strange structure like a dungeon and finding items in chest, leaving you to wonder what could’ve left those items. It created a sense that there was truly more to this world the just blocks in front of you and the player was just a small part of it.
@@Nikos. Totally agree, finding a spawner with items as a kid, gave this spine chilling impression that maybe these monsters that you’ve been terrorized by during the night and in deep caves, were not just a natural occurrence, but deliberately created. In early interviews Notch revealed that he was a big fan of dungeon crawler style RPGS growing up. Notch’s most current project from his new studio seems to be a dungeon crawler. You can see how those influences also seeped into Minecraft. I think the Adventure Update being Notch’s final entry into the game before stepping away and selling, were very indicative of what he envisioned the game to become. The update felt like a final little guide to let the devs work off of and expand. There is no telling where the game would’ve went from there, and the current game is not bad in itself, but somewhere down the road Minecraft truly lost its atmosphere, edge, and overall mystery.
