I think what makes Alpha truly unsettling was the Unknown, Notch kept adding Secret Stuff, there was the Discs, Herobrine-- The Fog-.. The Fog really made you feel like you were being watched. I mean, the feeling that there is something just out of your view, ready to jump you-- Fun stuff.
also back then people didnt dig through the code of video games and stuff as much so it seemed possible for herobrine to be a real mob

Some of my first memories of minecraft are playing the alpha versions and nearly never leaving my house, as i was way too scared of what didnt really exist
same i was around 10 but mostly of the monsters
Sammeeee…. I was terrified of what was out there (mostly of creepers) and wouldn’t leave my house until the afternoon of that mc day
I was so scared playing 1.5.2 cause I didn't know I was on peaceful mode
Same!
I played almost 100% on creative mode back then
Then the only horror was discovering chunks had been reset or my brother griefed my build
I’ve always noticed how the older versions of the game are more creepy
Herobrine vibes
It’s called luminal spaces and that’s why the backrooms, Minecraft, and even gorilla tag can be scary
“uhm actually it’s liminal 🤓🤓🤓”

@@LSqre I like to go into empty servers for old MMOs and just wander around. It's a feeling that's hard to put into words.
The scariest part is mojang won’t tell you the reason your all alone, leaving it up to your mind. You can come up with disturbing things sometimes.
@electricboogaloo124🤓
I truly relate to the unsettling feeling Minecraft gives. I still feel it even with modern minecraft, but it feels incredibly lonely, to the point sometimes its hard to even go inside a cave, because I always get the feeling of being watched, and having a very good imagination doesn't help too much with that. In the end, as much as I dislike feeling such loneliness, it also makes me love minecraft even more on a horror perspective, its quite an unique experience.
Playing in hardcore on top of it, it’s an amazing time lolol. Came down to half a heart too tryna get another damn endermite for my enderman farm. Ooh the rush I felt. Im still alive though!
I remember as a 9 year old I when the sun went down I eoukd dig myself a hole to spend the night in. It was creepynaf, never had the guts to avtualky fight mobs lol. I much rather would build in creative lol
its more fun when you listen to a horror podcast while playing >:)
@@bloomenvogel Yeah lol. Two of my co workers laugh about playing in creative too. I’m the odd one out haha. I should say I spent my middle school years with a pirated version of the game. (Wish I bought it then at 20, when I did get to buy it, Microsoft jacked the prices to 30 lmao. But worth it!) But I spent years on normal survival. I love how this game allows for so many different experiences lol. My sister used to also just play on creative, built some neat places.
I love that someone finally made a video on the older versions of Minecraft. I personally enjoy the beta and alpha versions of the game there's just this vibe about it, may or not be nostalgia though even if I only started playing somewhere in 2013-2014.
this topic just kinda popped into my head and i was like, this seams interesting. i talked to someone about it and wrote a script for it, but i just kinda put it off and then i started fully working on it.
I started playing the game in 2013 until 2015, then felt nostalgic and came back to it in 2020, a month before the pandemic actually. The alpha and beta versions still feel nostalgic to me, even though I haven't played them, just like (pop) rock music, even though I haven't to it as a little child.
I started playing back in 2011, and I can say for me, personally, its 100% nostalgia that brings me back to the older versions.
That and a challenge. These old versions were tough man.
I started playing in 2011-2012, because my childhood friend convinced my mom to buy it for me. So many days and nights playing together with my friends, in such a simplistic version of Minecraft, that creepy liminal vibe that always came back when the boys logged off and you were last in the server. Minecraft is such a great full game now but nothing will bring me back like the late alpha/early beta editions
Very cool video on an interesting concept that I'm sure a ton of people were thinking but you actually put into words well
keep up the bangers & pochita brand

I love how UA-cam has been recommending videos from smaller channels lately. Keep up the great work!

“Nothing in minecraft is actual horror”
The warden: am i a joke to you?
Old minecraft is like seeing an abandon building. You dont see the culture behind it, except it's remains. Stampy, cavemanfilms, herobrine rumors, everything. It was kids playing with eachother and seeing what others can do. The thing missing is the entire world exploring minecraft at the same time. It was a giant school with different clicks. Now mapmakers make money. Redstoners creates Redstone communities with more Redstone. They've grown more and away. They don't meet in the middle as much as they did back in school.
Minecraft can either be a perfect peaceful/calming or the scariest game out there and there is no in-between
Legendary video. You put into words what i couldn't properly for years. Very well put together and a great job putting everything on display!
Minecraft unironically shook young me more than any horror game did at the time, even more so than singleplayer Gmod used to creep me out. The fog, the quiet loneliness, the naive thought that Herobrine would come after me in the game, just how dark the night and caves were, God forbid Disc 11...I feel a little silly admitting i couldn't play it very much until i grew up a few more years.
Wow you told my minecraf history
Me too me too
I actually feel a lot more alone in the newer versions. The old versions are calming for me.
Newer versions seem to work independently to me, and that makes me almost feel that I am worthless in that world.
Older versions make me feel like that world needs me, and it’s more comfortable than anything.
I like your pfp

I feel like people always miss an extremely important part of why early Minecraft was so haunting; the lighting. Lighting is such an important part of ambience, and Minecraft is no exception! Thing is, early Minecraft had an extremely basic, unnatural-looking lighting engine. This, on top of the unsettling audio, empty fog, and overwhelming feelings of a lonely nostalgia, lead to a very eerie experience, especially in the modern day.
Man, what you said really got me thinking. Back in the day there's not much to do other than ponder what will you build next and what may be lurking just behind of you.
Nowdays, however, there's so much content that it´s hard to kinda just stop and ponder about stuff, 'cause you're usually already distracted with a shiton of things like waves of mobs, dungeons et cetera...
Really good vid! quite cozy btw.
And not just the updates, the community is different as well
Back in 2012, the peak of material farming was a stone generator or wood farm
Now, you can have 20 different farms going on at once (if your computer can handle it) and look up tutorials for basically anything you want
i will always be a baby when it comes to being scared in minecraft, this captures the feeling really well!! good video :)
Back in beta Minecraft, my second Minecraft world was on a beach and I noticed a sheep looking down at a sand pit. I thought maybe it was showing me something I should dig. It looked up at me then looked back down at the bottom of the pit. I decided to start digging in case there was buried treasure (which did not exist in beta 1.7) and then at one roar cave ambience played. I had no idea wtf a cave ambience was but I darn near crapped myself. I didn't touch Minecraft for months after that one
scariest part ab this story to me is when the sheep (a mob that kinda feels a little lifeless and predictable) starts acting a little weird lol.
Older and newer versions still feel a bit unsettled sometimes. I kinda have to have music on while I play it lol.
shitty username and pfp bruh
@@BrainiumBasher9001 why what’s your problem? It’s not hurting anything

@@abdulnasirbushra6049 yeah I hate the ambiance
@@Saturn-OS Yeah its so annoying I wish they played those wholesome soundtracks when Im there
Minecraft has never been “scary” exactly to me but it’s ALWAYS startled/jump scared tf out of me. I’m much better at it as an adult but I still hesitate to explore caves a lot. Thanks for the video.
(And this video didn’t even bring up the warden)
The 13 music disc is a really good disc for a dark, unsetting ambience. Works well in night time with high fog or in enclosed spaces to strengthen the theme. Why it was one of the first 2 discs added is something I cannot answer, it scares me.
The thing I always thought was a bit unsettling about the Alpha version is the colors, specifically the lime green grass and leaves. That plus the fog and lack of mobs is very unsettling indeed
this explains why when i first started playing minecraft in 1.2 beta (i was 11) i was scared shitless of mobs and going into caves. the atmosphere is... unnerving.
This video got recomended to me, and I thought this was from a youtube with a few hundred thousand subs. Wow.
This was good, don't stop making videos.
funny thing is that i took it down last night be i thought it wasn't good by changed my mine and put it back up
good video and well done. This motivates me in a way, as I'd like to create videos similar to this, but it's hard when stuck in a niche. Always good to see newer creators getting strong support
i thought the video was pretty goofy, but it was very interesting!
didn't mean to sound like a narcist there, meant to say it lol
Minecraft Lite felt like a horror game, when there was no hunger bar, all you have to do is to quickly collect wood and build a house or a tall 1 block tower asap until it gets dark and the fog is thick and zombies surrounds your building, that's the reason i loved the old simple Minecraft
You aren’t a real fan. “Minecraft Lite” ? I was playing minecraft on my pc, for 20$ before you were even born.
@@fshoaps
"Before you were even born"
bro I'm literally 7 years older than Minecraft and back then I didn't have a PC I used to play it on my old Ipad Mini. :/
Your probably not a real fan since you didn't know Minecraft Lite
I USED TO PLAY MINECRAFT LITE WHEN I WAS LIKE 7 W MY BROTHER and the zombies scared me so much, im just happy 2 see this comment bc i guess i dont know very many people who play minecraft lite and it was really creepy, from what i remember the only mobs were zombies
One of the things I think which makes it very creepy, is how there were no real biomes. You had beaches, forest, and cave making everything looking very similar and it was easy to get lost. Also the lack of tall grass really makes the world feel sort of uncanny. You see all the bright green grass and leaves and the occasional flower, but other than that everything feels sort of truman-show-y.
I never got that feeling
It felt more post-apocalyptic or abandoned than fake
Though the empty oceans always horrified me, with their flat gravel bottoms
This is going to blow up! Awesome job with these video essays, incredibly well done!
You're not afraid of being alone. You're afraid that you aren't
Nice video! This is exactly how I felt while playing Minecraft back then when I was little. You couldn’t have explained it better. It’s just that weird sensation you get in your chest that never goes away.

This is so cool, great editing and story telling. Algorithm pulling through
As someone who didn’t start playing Minecraft til official release 1.6, these old updates always felt so ominous to me for some reason. When I was like 10 or 11 I stayed up super late and was playing Minecraft Alpha in the dark by myself when I was supposed to be asleep. My dad got up to go to the bathroom or something and came into the room I was in to tell me to go to sleep and I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared in my life.
I’m subbing. I sense that this channel will go somewhere great in a few years
Good video! I always get that feeling when playing the Alpha/Beta versions, keep up the good work!
I really enjoyed watching this and honestly I'm so overjoyed about going down the old-school minecraft rabbit hole and seeing all sortss of people doing so the same, keep it up and hope I see moe of what you have! :)
I am so happy I found your channel, I love this style of content.
Great video! Glad to see the algorithm blessed you and I can’t wait to see how you develop your future videos!
I remember playing alpha Minecraft and I always strip mined sometimes for up to 2-3 hours, and I always got so paranoid staring down my endless series of tunnels, sometimes I literally would sprint out of the tunnels thinking something was right behind me, I’d think I see something peeking around a corner at me, I always felt watched so much so I’d start blocking off the tunnel behind me every 20 blocks or so. The game was such a horror game for me back then even when I was geared and nothing could hurt me. This was back when herobrine was a thing, something we all considered to be real. Of course now he as a concept doesn’t exist because the render distance is so great nothing can really trick your mind when everything in the game is so clear. Sometimes the music wouldn’t help relieve my paranoia either, something just felt off somehow, and sometimes the music made my paranoia worse.
Always love a good video from another small creator!
wow, excellent video! i was expecting to find much more minecraft-related videos on your channel but i’m surprised to see it’s the only one.
def seems like a promising channel so you have gained my sub! loved the humor, pacing and editing c:

I was utterly surprised when I saw ur channel cuz I totally thought you’d had a million subs this video was so good keep it up!
Good Videos, I extremly like your Edit Skills, delightful xD. The backround music at the beginning was nice. You matched the Minecraft Themed Video.
To this day im still terrified of Endermen. Only video game creature that actually freaks me out
whenever i see the enderman presence while in a huge cavern i just go "nah, nah bro 😭" and run away to go find another cave
Even though you were focusing on Alpha versions, I still think the Warden is worth mentioning when it comes to "horror" elements.
Also tbh. I rarely get that same feeling when playing on newer versions. Its just a very specific thing like you are just building your house in middle of nowhere far from villages, outposts etc. And when you do stuff so long with silence, it sometimes gets you somehow. Not as major as the alpha but still, that creepy charm might come to you someday where you feel that something is gonna pop up or something...
Really cool video!
It always feels creepy when I play without music on🤣
I never played pc beta and alpha but I played some of the first versions of pe and that is basically alpha and beta so I still have a lot of nostalgia for this era of the game on top of watching a bunch of videos on the pc version. Beta and alpha have a creepy yet comfy feeling to me, I love it. I’m a sucker for this is creepy cus I’m alone… or maybe not
luv this!!! old minecraft has such a sweet and sentimental place in my heart and the spooky aspects of it make it even fonder to me!!!!
I definitely don't think Minecraft was ever unsettling except for the ambience in the caves but I always thought it was peaceful, yeah lonely, but peaceful, I never felt like someone was watching me lol

Great video btw!!!
Cute pfp btw btw
some of the 2009/2010 versions were so weird, with things such as those clay looking Steve, Rana and 'Black Steve'
I remember in 2015 (I was 8) I decided to go back to those versions but I had to download something really sketchy and it gave my pc a virus!
When I finally played it, I found it really weird 😂
Alpha version Minecraft was the OG backrooms
I felt kinda ashamed as a four year old playing early Minecraft being scared and never leaving my house. Now I realize it wasn’t just me who was scared.
Glad to see more people talking about how unsettling Minecraft is! Even though now in its current state it's a lot less unsettling, it still has that dreadful feeling at times, which despite causing me to piss my pants I will forever adore it! Now I just think it's unsettling in new ways, even if it's not as spooky.
To be honest the end still freaks me out... Lol
Minecraft bad
Keep it up man, this was such a fun watch :33
Nice video and also great editing! Wouldn't mind more videos like this ^^
You deserve way more views. This video is really good.
I think its the sense of "everyone moved on", because when I play old roblox clients and maps i also get the same feeling. the empty map that used to get many visits.
The only part when you feel you're not alone is when you hear cave sounds even if you are alone... you know you are alone but still ...
This video is so relaxing and nostalgic at the same time ಥ‿ಥ
Damn man this was a great video for a new channel. Keep up the work mate!
great video man, but this video is so unsettling as well, i never knew if you would jumpscare me i could barely eat😆 also you gained a new subscriber :)
Disc 11 reminds me of the catacombs video where the guy is exploring, gets creeped out, drops his camera, and runs away.
I’ve been playing a mod pack called stone block the premise is that the whole world is just stone that’s it. So you have you mine out your whole world. And when it’s just stone dug out for hundreds of blocks around you it’s really unsettling
I started playing in beta, and I did always get this almost creeping sense of loneliness.
In beta, the version I started with in particular, 1.5_01, there also weren't very many mobs.
Creepers, skeletons, zombies, chickens, pigs, cows and sheep were about the only things in the game.
I was never big into horror as a kid, as I had once read a creepy pasta, (jeff) that scared me so bad I decided I was not much into horror.
As such, I think the emptiness didnt effect me as much.
Everyone knew about herobrine, even back then, and even not being so interested in horror, I also knew about it.
But, anytime I'd find a weird 1×1 hole that generated naturally, because occasionally they would, I'd instantly question wether or not I'd done that or of herobrine was there.
And I wasn't at all scared, I just wanted to see it.
My curiosity was quite the driving factor at the age of 11.
Like proving big foot, I just wanted to SEE herobrine.
And then screenshot it.
X'D
I do remember a creeping sense of slight insanity though, and by slight I just mean sometime forgetting wether or not I'd made a hole and going, "uuuuuh..m did I do that?"
Only to later remember that I did after a short "that's kinda creepy."
Moment.
I think my penitent for isolation as an individual has sort of prevented me from feeling that iscolated feeling.
That sort of liminal space horror.
But the game was quite empty back then.
I like the style of your video, keep it up!
Algorithm bless you, bro. Other than those teensy little errors here and there, this seems proffesional. Keep up the good work, bro!
Great video, always found minecraft very unsettling playing alone, even in the modern versions (especially in the caves). Nice channel name too!
Ngl a really high quality video, really enjoyed it
I remember playing old versions of minecraft and having heard of the herobrine rumor, i was afraid 24/7. I specifically remember me playing on a world with my grandpa [Yes he games😋] and thinking i heard something behind me, or seeing a figure in the distance.
Awesome that it wasn't just me who experienced this horror and that you made a video about it.
Keep up the awesome work! 😁
[Small tip] When working with a script its handy to keep retakes in mind even if they take some time, the mic hit was a bit distracting. Also try to keep the talk going a bit more, if this is hard then you can edit breaks away.
About the wanting to get it over with, 1. super relatable and 2. take the time regardless. Do it for the viewers but mostly yourself, you'll be a lot more satisfied believe me.
Everything else was awesome and structured really well 😄
Loved it!
Love this video. A commentary of the game, mentioning historical Minecraft. A deeper analysis of the game. My favorite style Minecraft videos.
This video's gonna be a classic in a few years

One of my favorite things about alpha Minecraft is, surely, this nostalgia feeling that always was (for me) a bit of melancholic and too quiet, or too far.
Btw man, sometimes your mic gets a little too low, maybe it's because of the noise reduction, since your voice is so smooth (take it as a compliment). Apart from that, great vid! :) I will definitely follow you on this new channel journey, so keep it up!

This was fantastic! Good job
The eeriness of early minecraft is something I'll always remember. I remember playin on bedrock and feeling the world so awfully lonely, it always gave me such a sad and scary feeling.
My first memories of Minecraft are building a dirt hut and just hiding in it i Felt so vulnerable
1 thing : MINING DIRT WITH THE PICKAXE
when i was showing this to people when i was making this they all said the same thing lmao
JavaFelix, keep up this work of your, and you can go far :)
I really appreciated this video, thank you so much!
Even today I still think that Heribrine existed at some point between the Alpha versions, and I remember it because strange things happened to me that I couldn't explain but in the Xbox 360 version when it just came out, and I remember running into several videos of people with similar experiences and one where even filmed Herobrine on xbox 360 when the game didn't have multiplayer yet and couldn't be modded.
Another fact that I wanted to comment on, since throughout the video you mention that Minecraft has been adding more things over time and makes it less creepy, well there is a theory that says that in reality the chronology of "the history of Minecraft or the Minecraft lore" goes backwards, that is, with each new version we are going back in timeline and that precisely the first versions with an empty world and filled only with fog, is in fact the end of that world.
Really enjoyed this you should do more horror themed game videos you’re really good at it :D
*cough* subnautica *cough*
That fucking jumpscare got me a heart attack
Wonderful video dude! Keep up the good work!💗
The footage of you mining dirt with a pickaxe hurt me to my very core
What makes old school minecraft different is the whole vibe like how simple the game was how you could just spawn in and not have to worry about bosses or making farms it’s super simple and fun
Hey dude, great video! Always enjoyed that creepy vibe of Minecraft, one of the reasons I love the old versions
Subbed, guarantee this channel will be popular within the next 5 years
wasn’t really around for the earliest versions of minecraft (parents didn’t like letting me play computer games) but I remember getting pocket edition on my mom’s iPad and spending days alone in the dark of my dirt hut, trapdoors for windows and no torches because I hadn’t figured out pickaxes. that was a strange feeling, not even knowing the creatures that waited beyond my very shoddy build, meanwhile camping out, waiting for the courage to face them- courage that rarely ever came. miss those days :(
The lack of ambient sounds, the mostly constant quiet (except occasionally block or mob sounds) gives of an eerie feeling. I thinks it’s one of the biggest factors for Minecraft’s uncanny atmosphere, even in modern versions
yeah thats why i really like to breed and trade to villagers or play with my friends. Minecraft is just really too quiet
Underrated asf. I hope the youtube algorithm blesses you
