      I'm 56. With really bad hand eye coordination trouble. My teachers went MAD trying to get me to PRINT straight. And then the whole cursive thing started. I tried, oh I tried. But all I could do was a kind of crazed, demented, rabid headless chicken scribble. All over the space between the lines. On the line? Well, I AIMED for the line.
      If I had to, I could read cursive, if the writer was able to write in a clear, legible hand. I don't use cursive, I tend to scrawl in an odd slovenly form of cursive printing. I developed it to take quick notes in school, during classes. I don't even type well. I've taken typing and keyboarding, and I can't get past 15 words a minute.
      I think today's kids are only taught some printing and keyboarding. They won't have those charts all around the classroom, showing how to make a perfect set of cursive letters.
      Can we have a moment of silence, for the demise of the hand written note...

It’s like his voice is just perfect for reading bedtime stories, in a really good way. You can easily stay awake and listen to “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry” because the content is so fascinating. But he just leaves you feeling very peaceful inside. It’s completely different from listening to his podcast StarTalk where it’s energetic and many people are trying to talk at once. I wish he had more time to narrate more of his books, but they did find someone who does sound close to him to narrate, like “The Pluto Files.” His books are always so enlightening. Like I learned a lot from “Accessory to War”; lots of things I wish I had known when I was enlisted in the Air Force.

    iirc, Pluto is smaller than the average comet (and in fact a theory is that it may be a trapped comet from the Oort cloud or interstellar). The fact that it is still considered a planet, albeit in a sub-category of dwarf planet, should really appeal to fans of Pluto. As time progresses, and many more planets are discovered (including the mysterious one causing disturbances in our own solar system), more categories will be thought up for planets, like ice giants or gas giants, etc, and eventually Pluto may even have a new home (like dwarf ice planet vs. dwarf rocky planet). And planets that we call "planets" will eventually have to be separated out into their own groups. The word planet is still there. If anything, Pluto should serve as a reminder of how we are furthering our path through space. It was less a demotion and more of a restructuring due to the remarkable progress we have made in interstellar cartography.

    If we restore Pluto to planet status, then we have to make our moon a planet. Luna is bigger than Pluto. The Earth/Luna would be a binary planet.

    • @jensraab2902
      @jensraab2902 4 роки тому

      Not necessarily. The moons Ganymede (Jupiter) and Titan (Saturn) are larger than the planet Mercury, for example. I'd have to look it up but doesn't it have something to do whether or not the gravitational center of the two-body system is inside one of the bodies?
      The center of gravity of the Jupiter and Ganymede should be within the bounds of Jupiter, just as the center of gravity of the Earth and Luna is inside the Earth - that's why Ganymede and Luna are moons.
      Hope I'm not spouting nonsense! ;-)

    • @jensraab2902
      @jensraab2902 4 роки тому

      @@jhill4874 Size ratio would make sense as a criterion. Of course, unless the average density is very different the size (measured in volume) is directly linked to the gravitational forces which determines the location of the barycenter. So ultimately, those two criteria might yield similar results.
      Maybe an interesting scenario could be a binary system of a gas giant and significantly smaller (by volume), but solid Earth-like body of comparable mass. There, the two criteria might yield very different thresholds but I guess such a scenario is unrealistic since these two very different celestial bodies would probably not form in direct vicinity and if one planet captured the other this system would probably be unstable. (I cannot provide any evidence for my conjecture that the system would be unstable. It's just a hunch.)
      ETA: Thinking about it, I think there are problems for a "mixed binary" planetary system for the two extreme cases of distance. If they're too distant from each other their orbit around the sun probably wouldn't be stable, whereas if they're too close to each other the gas giant itself might be unstable due to tidal forces (see Roche limit) and the two bodies might eventually merge. I wonder if there is a theoretical "planetary Goldilocks zone" where both planets would "survive" in the long run. Like I said, my gut feeling says no but I don't actually know.

    "Please write back, but not in cursive, 'cause I can't read in cursive."
    🤷 What the hell is going on in schools, nowadays? Fourth grade is when they _taught_ me how to read and write in cursive, and I _knew_ how to spell the word "scientist."

    • @anthony7697
      @anthony7697 4 роки тому

      Other than the fact some schools are just better than others, people learn differently and at different rates, and some people just aren't good at certain things for some reason. By fourth grade, I could tell you the power plant, weapons, speed, range, etc of just about any American, British, German or Japanese plane in World War 2, a ton about the Titanic, and other things that were well beyond some of my class mates, and was further ahead in math and science knowledge. High school I was doing the math for physic's problems in my head before classmates could even punch it in to their calculators. But I struggled with spelling and I still do. I have no idea why, but there are words in my vocabulary that I know the meaning and usage, but cannot spell to save my life. So when I've had to spell a word I don't remember had to rely on doing so phonetically. Which aside from things that will trip you up regardless becomes that much harder when say the people around you pronounce 'Scientist' like 'Scientest'. And someone younger will likely default to spell it how it sounds.
      As to cursive - As much as I was taught to read and write it, the problem is especially in handwritten cursive that I can't discern beginning and end. Some of the letters when written by people can look the same, least the variation I was taught 20 some years ago. I have to take time to discern 'are those two n's or one m, is that supposed to be an o or an a, etc. It just appears frequently as loops and squiggles that take time to decipher assuming it's neatly written and a more 'basic' form like what I learned and a decent size - what my mother learned is flat out illegible to me and looks like it belongs on some piece of parchment as a royal decree 500+ years ago in Europe. Case in point the US constitution - I can read the first lines after "We the People" with no problem, trying to read Article I - maybe with several hours and a magnifying glass. It's hard to describe how and why I struggle, despite various attempts to teach me how - I just do and always have.
