"Romulus. How well i remember it. You'll find the predominate color to be grey. The buildings, the clothes, the people. Did you know the Romulan heart is grey? Its true! And all together appropriate for such an unimaginative race." ~ Elim Garek
Nice pic
Honestly, the Romulan capital looks gorgeous. The grey buildings are so they don’t take away from the landscaping
Their Bird of Prey ships look dope though
Elim Garek shows condescension of another people he subsumes under the term "race".
Elim did like to confuse people. Take what he said with a mountain of salt.
You know, for such an optimistic setting, Star Trek has a surprising number of atomic wars.
I think the real world reason is the cold war and the in-universe reason is that it's proof that with unity, determination, and passion, you can rebuild from anything.
In the 24th century before TNG era began they had been at war with the Tholians, Tzenkethi, Talarians and Cardassians.
Let’s hope we skip that step in our journey to the stars
It's only optimistic if you're a human or a member of the Federation. Some species live a very miserable existence. Just ask the Vidiians.
I mean, no matter how optimistic you are, War is a universal content.
Love how the Romulans entered the Dominion war based on a ‘lie’. My favorite episode of the DS9 series
The funny thing is that the Romulans are always trying to trick other people into going to war with each other. Half their plots in TNG was trying to get the Federation and Klingons to fight each other.
Technically yes, but also let's be honest...after finishing off the Feds and Klingons, the Romulans were always going to be next ...
@@Youalleatmuffins Yea, I have no idea what the Romulans thought they were going to do after The Dominion crushed the Federation and the Klingons. The best they could hope for was maybe a generation or so of peace as the Dominion occupied and consolidated their new territory, but the Romulan Star Empire would have a rapidly approaching expiration date.
The post-dominion war relationship between the Romulans and the Federation reminds me of the post WWII political climate.
Is this all stuff covered in TNG?
@@ReverendMeat51 Technically the TNG movie Nemesis
@@samtemdo8 and the 2009 Abrams film
There was actually a novel that dealt with the Romulans finding out about Captain Sisko's deception and the role he and Garak played in the death of their Senator Vree'nak and tricking them into the war with the Dominion. Suffice it to say.....the Romulans were not happy at all......
It’s very common throughout history for allies in war to become hated enemies afterwards. Athens and Sparta allied to stop Persian expansion and then later became rivals themselves, culminating in the Pelopennese War. Rome and Carthage allied against Pyrrhus of Epirus and almost immediately entered into armed conflict after Pyrrhus’ withdrawal from Magna Graecia. Octavian and Mark Anthony allied against Caesar’s assassins and later became enemies as well. Even the USA was deeply distrustful of Great Britain after WW1, and actively made plans for war with GB.
Please do the Goa'uld from Stargate SG1. For that matter I would love to see the Ori and the Ancients as well. Don't forget the Tok'ra.
joshed You must ask the permission of the Great God Apophis before you have the impertinence to make a history of the Goa'uld! May your insides be devoured by dung beetles!

It would be great to have a series set after the dominion war.
dentoncrimescene Unfortunately Discovery is set in the past before TOS and everything looks rebooted.
You would be pleased to know that I've been kind of kicking one around, although of course I doubt it will ever see the light of day.
I call it Star Trek: Dawn. It carries the ST saga into the 25th century, and it works something like this:
The year is 2402. Kira has just been made President of Bajor, and faces the task of building up a fledgling state amid a very complex political situation. The Provisional Government has been made permanent, and now shares power with the church in a sort of Iran-like arrangement. The Maquis have laid down their arms and joined the political process, some holding office in the Federation government, while others have seats in the Bajoran Parliament. Kira's moderates, who want to reduce the power of the church and ultimately secularize Bajoran society, are faced with a conservative party who wants to keep the old ways, led by a very savvy but corrupt female politician with a personality very similar to Kai Winn.
The first episode begins with Jean-Luc Picard's funeral (old age), and Kira's victory speech. We find that Sisko is retired and living on Earth; Nog has his own command--the USS Cairo, being Edward Jellico's old ship; Jadzia has died and her symbiote has been been passed to a young female named Eliya. Eliya Dax is in command of Deep Space 9--and now gets to call Sisko "old man" : )
Jake lives on Bajor, and has become a famous writer and controversial political speaker (his stance is a bit Jordan Peterson-ish).
Unlike previous ST's, most of the action in Dawn takes place dirtside, on Bajor--following the story of Kira as she applies herself to the delicate of task of uniting the disparate factions of her world. So it's a lot of talking heads--essentially aimed at those who like the politics of ST more than the battle scenes. Kind of John Adams in space, if you will. (If you have not HBO's John Adams series, I urge you to check it out.)
Cast, where not already known:
Kai Malak (Kira's conservative rival): Rosamund Pike
Jake Sisko: Don Cheadle
Eliya Dax: Kirsten Prout
yep
Half of voyager is set after the dominion war
Star Trek Online did a whole lot with that.
Unfortunately, it'll never be converted into anything mainstream.
"It's a fake!!!!" -- Nice addition :)
*No!! Its real!!!*
It´s a trap! ;)
No, *it's a FAP!*
The Best episode of DS9
I thought Trump coined that phrase.
I've always loved the Romulans. Like Vulcans in appearance, but without the deadpan stoicism. (Cloaking is cool too...)
@cristopher wong that's a strawman. Admiring the cunning and villainy of a fictional faction doesn't mean he'd like them in real life.
A very intriguing race.Unfortunatly the FEDERATION is allways stealing their tech, claiming sectors and brain washing their citizens with endless propaganda to create distrust and hate. And despite what some sources say,The Super NOVA was a federation autrocity to end the ROMANULAN threat !!

Thank you for taking the official/public line about why the Romulans joined the war against the Dominion, and for stopping the video before any JJ-timeline garbage!
6:26 Due to the agreement, the Defiant should have always had a romulan observer on bord the ship. Its a shame that the series havent take that point serious, i would have loved to see a romulan in their crew among Worf :-)
Fabio Rüegsegger they did at first but probably stopped as they weren’t technically supposed to use the cloaking device in the alpha quadrant
mjolnir112 I think it would have been interesting to have a Romulan character who befriends the crew and decides to eventually turn a blind eye to the cloaking device.
The actor who played the Romulan fell out so she was ignored as a character. But I do agree. Having a Romulan on the Defiant as a main or regular secondary character would have been awesome. :)
Google Martha heckett. She portrayed races. Subcommander T'Rul was planned to be the first Rumulan office serving in Star Fleet on the Defiant with Worf. The studio nix the idea sadly.
I am familiar with Star Trek since the early 90s, and I know basics about the main factions and races, but this is the most detail I have ever learned with regard to a particular faction within the franchise.
You should go and check out Orange River's YT channel. He's primarily Star Trek/sci-fi focused. Makes fantastic, well-researched video essays. Released his 'Romulans' vid about three weeks ago.

"It's a fake!!!" Love that moment in DS9.
Well informed and well put together video, keep up the good work.

Fantastic video really well told! Videos about the Dominion, Dominion War, Cardassian Empire and Obsidian order would be amazing!
Entertaining video, I've been a Star Trek fan since I was 4 years old. I started watching the original series and the animated series in '74 or '75. I've loved every Trek show until Discovery. Thanks again for the great analysis of the Romulan Star Empire! 🖖
Discovery is no worse than voyager
@@johnfinley8158 Discovery's ratings dropped off every single episode that came out. Voyager's ratings went up and down, but generally kept climbing and spiked in S4. Voyager's the better show. Also it got three more seasons because it was prequel dogshit.
This was just recommended to me by UA-cam, and I'm really glad I clicked and watched your `Romulan Star Empire´. Good segment, intelligent, calm clear voice, nice range of illustrative material (could do with more charts or maps, but maybe that's just a personal quirk of mine). Looked up your channel home page, found out I already watched one of your vids, Incoming on Star Trek Discovery. Then I found out I also know your channel's name from your collaboration with Star Wars explained. Enough of that, I just subscribed, and am looking forward to more.
If you're doing empires, maybe you can do Asimov's Foundation empire, and the preceding Galactic one some day.
Either way, this sounds like a really cool project, maybe something that could prove educational as well.
The foundation is basically the catholic church, preserving roman knowledge throughout the "dark age". A neat story
Nice video. Romulans are my favorite sci-fi race. I absolutely love their premise, but feel as Trek went on they were mishandled more and more.
The became more and more vigorous mustache twirlers as the series' went on.
I strongly recommend reading Rihannsu: the Bloodwing Voyages by Diane Duane. They are a terrific series of books set in the TOS era that make the Romulans a wonderfully intriguing culture, and they are very different to the TNG+ Romulans.
ggsimmonds1 .. are the romulan related to the Vulcan
ggsimmonds1 they're cool but I'm more of a Terran empire man
They have enormous potential. I would love a TV show focusing solely on them.
Really good explanation of the Romulans!
Thank you for what you do, great stuff!

Meh "Romulan Republic" just hasn't the same ring to it. Sounds weak.
I would be interested on what you have to say about the Imperium from the Dune series.
I dont know what Dune is, so all I know is the spice must flow and heretics must be purged
@@just_some_dude019 Dunno what spice is but heretics must definitely be purged. The Emperor protects brother
Well done! Long live the empire!
The Dawn of Victory team recommended you guys, and I'm glad they did! Your videos are great! Keep it up!
Great video. Here is my suggestions...
1) The Strogg (Quake).
2) The Imperium of Man (Warhammer 40,000).
3) The Kelvin Timeline (Star Trek, and please include all events in the comics).
4) The Cybermen (Doctor Who).
5) The war against Mental (Serious Sam).
6) Cybertronians (Transformers).
My favorite Star Trek species.
The disconnect between the Romulans in this video and those portrayed on STP is staggering.
Because in TOS, TNG and DS9 we saw only soldiers, politicians and agents. In addition, Narek, Narissa and commodore Oh seem to you not enough romulan?
Mass Ryb tbh, Narissa, Narek and Oh are Tal Shiar agents.. also, does this guy forgot that the Romulans have no strong Government by this point?
This was a grand feast for a hungry Star Trek fan/nerd! From the inception of the Romulan species, they were forever underutilized for the more aggressive Klingons.
Btw, if at all possible, can you branch out into He-Man and The Masters of the Universe and/or She-ra: Princess of Power lore? I'd love to see what you're able to accomplish with the likes of:
The Evil Horde
The Kingdom of Eternia or various Etherian kingdoms
The History of Eternia/Etheria
etc...etc...etc!
Well done. You have my subscription.
Also, here are some suggestions:
* United Federation of Planets - Star Trek
* Klingon Empire - Star Trek
* Galactic Empire - Star Wars
* Galactic Republic - Star Wars
* The Dominion - Star Trek
* First Order - Star Wars
* The Terran Dominion - Starcraft
* The Breen - Star Trek
This was a very good video documenting one of my top three Star Trek races!
Romulans the Bipolar cousin of the Vulcans. Christ.
Those stoic Romans with their Bread and circuses. Quite the mix
I pretty sure this is what Vulcans used to be like before worshiping logic.
@@Vasileski88 Strangely enough, both modern Vulcans and Romulans are a distancing of the original vulcan species. Both are disciplined in different fashions, sculpting their societies around their coping mechanisms against their baser natures. Vulcans have their logic philosophy, Romulans have this strange, cautious cunning which has them reign their emotions until they can act at the best time on them with careful planning, but they aren't nearly as bad as how vulcans were, whom were nearly psychopathic with how extreme their passions and emotions effected them.
Great video guys. I am a Star Trek fan and I'm glad to see you really covered the major events.
Awesome video! Gotta love the rommies. My very personal wishlist for future videos on your channel would be:
-The Minmatar Republic (Eve Online)
-The Mars Congressional Republic (The Expanse)
-The Khaaneph (Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak)
Subbed for sure.
Excellent report
Excellent presentation.
Long live the Romulan Empire romolus invicta.
The Treaty of Algernon is such a failure for the Federation. "Oh, we won't have cloaks, but you tooootally can, that's fair! Hahah... ha.... heh..."
It's more of a script actually, the idea you know that the good guys shouldn't use sneaky and deceitful tactics, much less on a larger scale, and those cloaks were far from perfect, they consume immense energy and you can't go above warp 6 when using them, not to mention fire weapons, and they emit tachyon emissions, which can be somewhat easily detected by more experienced starfleet personnel
These are fantastic! Keep this up!
Great video, so professional & a terrific narration
I'd like to hear more about the Hydran Kingdom.
That is, until JJ Abrams came up with the dumb idea of destroying Romulus.
bombarde1701a I choose to believe that the AbramsVerse either isn't cannon, or that Ambassador Spock actually succeeded in saving Romulus, and that Nero was just a confused, misinformed snowflake. I refuse to accept the destruction of Romulus.
Same here. By the logic of Star Trek 2009, the events of that movie would have erased the whole timeline up to that point, which we know from producers isn't the case. They insist that it's an "alternate timeline." So I'd say that for any of the events of the original timeline to have happened at all, it *couldn't* be the same universe as the one in which Romulus was destroyed.
Percy Danvers unfortunately Id have to disagree. The Trek Encyclopedia says Romulus was destroyed. So the mind meld/flashback scenes of the Prime Timeline are canon.
I hate that whole idea - especially as it was destroyed by another star going nova. How does a supernova travel light years?
Daniel O'Donovan i agree. A supernova wouldve taken decades to reach Romulus. At the very least weeks. They could’ve evacuated the entire planet in that time.
Literally Romulus and Remus in a Sci-Fi setting
Nice jacket that grey one.
It would have been nice to have them as "fully developed" as the Klingons.
I disagree. A xenophobic and secretive species like them shouldn't have much development
That was great :) Please do more about star trek. I loved the map too ,maybe you could show more of that too . Thankyou so much I'll be looking forward to the next one . You're onto a winner here :D
This was great! Could you make videos about the empire (warhammer fantasy) or the tamriel empire?
I cannot wait for your full video on the United Federation of planets
I'm here because of the Season Finale of Strange New Worlds. I haven't seen TOS except for a few chapters, now I confirmed how Kirk prevented the war.
Very well put together, I'll certainly be watching more!
These are good videos. I'm not too current on the whole Dominion storyline, because i didn't watch much of DS9. Was often too busy for tv back then. Someday i will catch up on Netflix.
Yours seems to be more coherent a site and less prone to " patting oneself on the back". Well done.
That was amazing and very well done. Bravo bravo !!!!!!!!!
Wouldn’t mind seeing a video on the United federation of planets and star fleet
5:33 Interestingly, the destruction of the border posts in TNG "The Neutral Zone" was originally conceived as the introduction of the Borg as a common enemy to the Federation and the Romulan Empire. Look up the episode over at the Memory Alpha wiki and the background notes go into it some.
Kinda ironic how all the pictures of the romulan senate is right before they all die XD

ahhhh yes...... the battle of Narendra III.
I always thought the warbirds mentioned in the lore were Firehawks, not washed-down Deridex's.
dammit Templin, now you made me boot up Bridge Commander and play that scenario!

a very entertaining and informative series thus far, more please! Subbed!
Dang, holy coitus interruptus Batman, you left out the destruction of the Romulan homeworld by their star going SUPERNOVA! That crushed the Romulans as we saw in the Picard series. Ultimately leading to their reunion with Vulcans and then Vulcan becoming Ni'Var (Discovery). They seemed to have ultimately joined the Federation (Discovery) in 3190 after solving The Burn. Would have loved the announcer here going through that part of the Romulans' history!
You forgot the Romulan goverment reformed after Senzian to be more friendly UFP, and the distruction of the Romulan homeworld means a goverment may no longer exsist.
Great first for the Star Trek universe with this video, so definitely would love to see more from you guys. Only issue was that the background music competed with the narrator's voice, so it was distracting to focus on what the narrator had to say while filtering out the background noise.
Fun video! Loves me some star trek.

Sup swiss, Maarten here. Gonna leave this comment to request the Empire of Man (warhammer) and the Empire (Elder Scrolls). As a reminder.
Maarten Blom The Empire in Elder Scrolls is boring and there’s not enough lore to really delve extensively into them. Hell a Stormcloak video would be more interesting
very interesting video
If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable.
It's a shame the writers of 'Picard' never saw this video. They don't seem to understand what the "star" in "Romulan Star Empire" means.
the Romulan Stellar Empire may be vast, but as a unitary state its central power is in Romulus and with the destruction of Romulus and the post-war political fragmentation led to insurgent movements throughout the empire and the collapse of the neutral zone with the refugee crisis.
@@imperatortiago I don't buy that. The Romulans were able to control their vast Star empire for centuries and had months (or years) to plan for the disaster. Even the Klingon takeover of the Romulan Empire in the alternate future of "All Good Things..." made more sense in context than this poorly thought-out nonsense.
Great video.
4:10 That's a War Bird, not a Bird of Prey. Before some smart ass tries to say "but it's shaped like a War Eagle, or a King Eagle" That ship in that episode was impulse only, so it could only be a War Bird. If it could go warp, then it would have been a War Eagle, or possibly King Eagle (not likely, it only fired one Plasma at a time, so would have most likely been a War Eagle). The Bird Of Prey is a Klingon light Cruiser. Several of them were sold to the Romulans for conversion to use Plasma instead of Disrupters, but it's still a Klingon hull.
I like the idea that their home was lost. I mean, it isn't the first time and just like before the Romulans will rise. They also paid in kind by destroying Vulcan's own home planet.
This was great thank for the info

This was a very good and thorough video about the Romulans, but one thing was missing as far as I could tell. There was no mention about the Romulans in Nemesis or what happened in that movie, or speculation as to what happened after that movie.

I love your videos, however I am definitely wondering why you did not include the reman rebellion under Shinzon? Even though this movie gets a lot of flack, I think it is just as good as any of the other next generation movies accepted as canon.
