I thought radiator grilles were redundant with EVs? Sometimes bold styling can highlight technical innovation (think Cybertruck). Sometimes it can seek to hide a lack of technical innovation. I fear BMW is in the latter category.
EVs do need cooling as well. The VW beetle never had one, and the 90s Passat had only a hole in the front. That was so ugly, VW had to change the design immediatelly due to low sales numbers. That was the beginning of the "smiling face" design at VW
They've got it backwards, it's not the outlandish designs that last but the simple functional ones. The Cybertruck is weird looking but everything is for a reason, no gratuitous flourishes or extra bulges just to have a bulge.
Their design language is completely confused, disproportionate, and lacks elegance. It seems to be a case of trying too hard. Beauty in simplicity imo.
In Germany, UA-camrs make fun of BMW calling the grill "hamster teeth". The grill is already smaller again at the i5, so I hope they got their head of design under control.
Yes many of the new BMW designs are hideous but they have not taken risks with the new i5 / 5 Series and they will not with the i3 / 3 Series when it comes in a year / 18months time. The biggest problem BMW has talking as a current BMW 5 Series owner is the 40% increase in prices since 2019 they are pricing themselves out of the market.
For me, the BMW's from the '70s were absolutely stunning, same thing for the early 2000's. They are timeless beauties, even to this day: BMW 2002 tii, BMW CSI 3.0, BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe, for instance. Today, I find their designs are mostly rubbish looking.
You know what looking at new BMWs is like? It’s like forgetting to clean your bedroom ceiling fan for 6 months, then going to sleep one night and while having a wild kinky dream you suddenly wake up coughing and gagging because a giant clump of dust has dislodged from a fan blade and flown into your mouth That also, is timeless
I don’t think this will put off traditional BMW customers, because it has become a trademark look. However, it may put off potential new customers. The big question is whether their strategy of using the same platform for petrol, diesel and electric cars will enable them to be competitive. At some point, I think they will have to optimise it for electric cars - as in the IX.
@@robertfonovic3551 yes, I agree. Looking at some of the new kids on BMW's block, I'm glad I'm not a fanboy. I've owned 10 cars from nine different car brands, but splurged the most on buying my BMWs. I still have one that I really like (E63, LCI, 2008), but I'll never buy another one.
I'm not a BMW fan but I have to say that design is actually pretty cool. It's not what I would buy but they look imposing and futuristic which is what that market segment wants. One of the EVs shown however did look terrible.
Matter of taste. My opinion is that it has a very fascinating, futuristic, original and sporty appearance. It cannot be any uglier than any of Mercedes EQ series, though.
I agree. I've owned 3 BMWs and their latest grill design is hideous. My neighbor has one and I have to turn my head every time I walk by his house with my dogs.
As a BMW fan, it hurts to see design at BMW is going downhill. Everybody points at Adrian but what about the board. How can they watch this worrying trend without taking action? Sales numbers are held up by older non-EV vehicles such as 3, X3,X5 that look ok and the EV,s I4 and IX3, which look attractive compared to the 1, XM, iX, x2, X4, X6,7, 5. A dark period for BMW even if they still offer a great drive.
What are they gonna say? “Yeah, we know that our vehicles are ugly enough to make a train take a muddy road”. Perhaps the hideous styling is to distract everyone from their dismissal reliability.
That’s the same message being thrown out by Lexus. ‘We are sticking to our guns’. Bring on the ugly. Newsflash Toyota - that’s why I stopped with Lexus. I thought the BMW Bangle butt was as far as they would go but no, they decided to increase the ugliness and slap it on the front! The only way you’ll get me in one of either brands cars is on a dark night with a brown paper bag over my head. Truly awful.
Should look at their bikes - the GS is hideous but is best selling big bike worldwide. If BMW car sales are flagging, that's probably down to their products themselves rather than outright looks. And the i4, ix3 and the like - much like the ICE equivalent. (Chris Bangle was worse than this van Houghton or whoever)
As an owner of 2 X5s (2003 version), one might think I would embrace their exagerated design trend. Nope, absolutely the worst design choice possible. Looks like Japanese Anime.

Methinks you should be criticizing and commenting on quality and dependability of these vehicles, rather than wasting your time trying to convince others to agree with your personal concept of ugliness/beauty. Beauty is not an absolute; it's an idea, an ideal, a concept, and yes, there are very popular "standards" for beauty, but they're not close to being absolute. Agreed, many would consider the grills on many new vehicles, or the entire design of the vehicle, to be "ugly", but others with, let's say, less polarizing views, would consider these designs bold, or unique, or "trend-setting". One has only to look at the grills of the Lexus brand over the past number of years as one example. Or how about the "ugly" fake exhaust pipes of many of the recent Mercedes models -- although as a long time owner of multiple Mercedes I've come to truly appreciate these fake-pipes; I no longer need to spend a considerable amount of time cleaning them, I also don't need to replace them every 2-3 years because they've corroded through due to the exhaust gases. Personally, I really like the bold distinctive look of the new Bimmers. With respect to the single Series 7 that I owned for only 7 months, and subsequent on-line reviews, I will suggest that BMW needs to pay more attention to the dependability aspect of their vehicles rather than the design. But I digress! There are those who might consider the choice of Sam's chest-revealing shirt, on a popular website, raising funds for a very worthy cause to be, um, bold? sexy? manly? classy? lowbrow? tasteless? embarrassing? Well, I think you get the idea and I'll leave that open to your personal view. Personally, I'm jealous; Mother Nature, while spreading her genes, never saw fit to endow me with half the chest Sam has! I think I'm just plain old ugly. (No, I will NOT publish a jpeg of my torso for confirmation!)
I commend BMW for bravely implementing the changes. Most cars are a evolution not a revolution ( eg golf) and let's be honest no one notices a golf. I just think it's too much of a dramatic change too soon for BMW.
