Yeah the camera for Classic Sonic in Generations does a lot of work. The shitty Classic stages in Forces actually made me retroactively appreciate just how well done they were in Generations.
@@justabrownie1435 no they learned a lesson. And the lesson they learned probably is that people don’t want classic sonic due to people not liking his inclusion in forces
The camera in Generations for the Classic levels doesn't get enough praise. Not only does it add a cinematic flair to it, but it subtly telegraphs if a hazard or critical jump to an alternate pathway is coming along by panning towards the right or shifting to diagonal 2.5D perspective (similar to the Trials games). This is some really good stuff.
I love classic sonic in generations, I’ve played the levels 1000s of times, and yet you still told me things I never noticed, it immerses you without you even realising it’s happening!
@@AidGum but they're well designed platforming levels with fine controls and cool gimmicks. In this case it doesn't matter if the physics are different, it's not a brain dead game like 4 or Forces. The levels look and play awesomely.
13:49 I was never aware of this either. It's honestly incredible to find out something new about Generations which is already a decade old now. Just further proof that Modern Seaside Hill is the pinnacle of boost gameplay level design in my opinion. That's why I felt Forces was safe (I was a lot more hyped for Mania, of course) when the trailer said that it was apparently being brought to us by the Colors/Generations team. I was hoping to get more Generations-tier level designs only to be disappointed when I watched gameplay videos. I never got Forces because of this.
I didnt even know people are beginning to dislike classic sonic in gens. Ive always liked classic sonic in gens even to this day, it feels like its own thing and has really good level design.
Classic Sonic was tainted since he was the big part of the meta era that we’re all currently in. So he’s became a target much like Green Hill, the Wisps, etc. Trust me, once this era ends, people will start to look back on this game and Classic more fondly again.
I genuinely think classic is the best part of gen, I love every level of classics and the speed tech. Even planet wisp and seaside hill, stages I despised on my first playthrough after learning some skips to go faster. (Seaside hill spin dash launch at the start that saves 5 seconds, Planet wisps ending cut using the spindash with the wisp that skips the entire ending of the stage) I've had a blast playing them
Love this channel. Generations is so good, still one of my top fav Sonic games to this day. It was such an awesome one of a kind celebration at the time, that I think definitely has lost a lot of the charm it once had because of the over reliance on Classic Sonic to help carry the brand to this day. Forces in particular really did a number on the perception of Classic Sonic, which is a shame because when utilized well, we get great stuff like Sonic Mania. Ah well, is what it is, as a Sonic fan myself, we're used to Sega's mismanagement lol. Great video. Looking forward to more!
@@AidGum Bringing him back AFTER Generations kinda did that, but I'd say the biggest problem is that Sonic Team fears developing ideas because last time they did it they got terrible scores... That weren't for those ideas.
it was really nice how generations classic actually inhabited a 3D space with all the corners and turns he goes around as opposed to how flat forces classic's levels were
It really sucks that Classic's continued appearances somtimes for dumb reasons (looking at you Forces) really taint what was supposed to be his one time return and how good it actually was. A once beloved comeback has turned into a slowly descending pit of nostalgia bait.
@@undeadbatman9762 Even better, what about going back to having just one Sonic? Character design changes shouldn't be canon, especially when they literally start messing it up ("Sonic from another dimension").
@@inendlesspain4724 I do think that having both 2D games from the mania team and 3D games from Sonic Team would be great. At least they'd be focusing on less games at a time and put more polish into it-oh who am I kidding they don't care
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 Oh, I'm not against more 2D games in the vein of the classics, just wished they stopped it with the classic Sonic nonsense. I wouldn't even mind them still using the classic Sonic design as long as they don't pretend it's a whole separate character.
I don’t think I understand the argument of nostalgia baiting. I think a lot of people prefer the games that the “classic” design of the character came from, as well as his design. If sega ever made a triple A game with a design like to old one with a lot of the gameplay aspects, modern fans would get pissy so they keep throwing the two designs in with each other. Personally I think the modern design of sonic is a bastardization of his original design, so I don’t see it as nostalgia bait so much as sega trying to appeal to everybody and failing spectacularly both counts
@@aidenpomeroy1848 Do you see Nintendo trying to market white Kirby, fat Pikachu, brown-haired Link or blue-shirt-red-overalls Mario as „Classic“ versions of these characters? No, because that would be being a shameless sellout. Just because you like the design doesn’t mean it’s not. Using this design in something like Mania is perfectly fine, that’s more like Pokémon using sprite art in something like the PokePelago, but as a complete game. And why not let people who like this art style have some games with it? However, I for one think that the Sonic Generations/Forces version of „Classic Sonic“ is a bastardization of the original Classic era design. It’s way too round, way too cutesy and has none of the personality and edge the character had in the original trilogy. If there is one thing Sonic was never meant to be, it’s „cutesy“ and Classic Sonic being misinterpreted as such was literally the reason SEGA stopped using the design in the first place. Nowadays they’re perpetuating this misinterpretation because it sells. That’s a big problem in my eyes. TLDR: Using the Classic 16 bit aesthetic for new games: Good Shoving a sanitized cutesified version of the Classic Sonic design into every other modern (supposedly) 3D game: Bad
Nah, it was good for the anniversary game. But the problem is how they're using it. I would be fine if the mania team did 2d games (both classic and modern, I'd like to see them do a rush-like game) and Sonic Team made 3d games. I'd buy them both. Buf of course that's not gonna happen because Modern isn't profitable anymore...
@@rainpooper7088 I think because of the way the the two designs are so different in presentation and artstyle it makes sense to let both have games, and I absolutely hate the way the design is portrayed in 3d games, but I don’t think that should mean that the design of the character should be thrown out. I don’t even want the design in modern games, I just want to be able to see my favorite character design actually playable in big sonic games every once in a while, not just 2d 16 bit retro platformers. The way stuff like the mania shorts were portrayed made me the most happy with the series I’ve been in a really really long time, and I just don’t want them to ditch it because people think bringing back the design is nostalgia baiting. Forces is 100% baiting, but bringing him back is not in itself baiting nostalgia.
"But wait I thought Iizuka said he wanted to close that chapter of Sonic and move on to bigger and better things." Honest to god more proof that Iizuka should just hire a PR guy at this point, 9 outta 10 times he says anything he ends up looking like the bad guy cause he was practically lying. Most recent example: "We took away the SEGA characters to give love to lesser used Sonic characters." proceeds to use the entire cast of Forces, the only "lesser used" characters being the Chao.
I mean Blaze and Big weren't there. That's not me disagreeing with you, just saying. I think I'd take any under used character over Zavok again somehow. Seriously, how and why is he still here.
@@narxmagee727 Their repeated Zavok usage in recent games makes that statement about "lesser used characters" now seem like an excuse to shove Deadly Six in every game they can.
To be fair Omega arguably is a lesser-used character, he was absent in Generations and appeared for about 30 seconds in Forces. But yeah, the roster for TSR was kinda meh, definitely needed more playable characters
Stop hating on my man lizuka he is probably faulty too don't get me wrong but don't blame it all on him there is probably some higher up fuckery going on here forcing classic in forces keep it in mind lizuka directed some of the best sonic games ever sonic 3&k sonic adventure 1,2 and he wasn't even involved in sonic forces development that much if you check out the covarage at that time he was more interested in mania
@@cin2110 dude ... izuka is one of the best directors / producers in the series, he was responsible for several good things, he was responsible for expanding the history of the series back in the days of sonic 3 and sonic adventure, created the shadow, the knuckles clan , master emerald, and many other things, but it is remarkable that he is not in one of his best phases, I think he is a little overwhelmed to work only in sonic games since 2009, I think that is why he is replaced by nakamura as a producer of sonic forces
When you really think about it, the camera's are kinda like badniks (Specifically the Eggpawn's.). In Generations, both would follow the player, and interacted with them in a multitude of ways. In Forces, badniks were usually static and rarely did anything.
Still rubs me the wrong way that Classic Sonic was supposed to be Sonic’s younger self in Generations rather than a artstyle. I would rather have him be from another dimension than him being young Sonic
I actually agree the whole Spider-verse way of explaining Classic Sonic makes more sense since Classic Sonic is canonically the same age as modern Sonic. So I’m okay with the young Sonic thing being retconned.
That's why the Classic Sonic Improvement mod is so great. It doesn't just fix some level design and physics, it also changes the camera angles throughout levels to make them feel 3D. Each level even has a cool intro. It took the fans a couple years to do it, but they still outdid Sonic Team
Sonic Team could easily do what the fans do, Generations proves that. It's not a matter of them lacking the talent/capability, it's that the higher ups/main designers actively choose to be lazy.
@@islandboy9381 yeah, that's pretty much it. Sometimes the fans get a little too much credit, but I think it's definitely deserved for what they did here. But It'll be better for everyone the sooner Sega/Sonic Team gets their act together
I recently played generations and it still holds up. The classic stages give so much life and freedom to run around and explore in different paths. I also like how you brought up the opening for sonic cd. What's crazy about it is that some animators from dragon ball z worked on that. Great video dude.
Honestly, as a "modern" fan I never once thought the complaints about Classic Sonic in Generations was anything outside of "it doesn't control like the original games" and personally at the time I had no complaints about Classic Sonic either because I was pretty happy with the modern section of the game, I wasn't about to nitpick something that wasn't made for me. In the context of today, I still have no issue with Classic Sonic in Generations but now at least I can thank you for pointing out the detail the Classic Sonic levels put into the game where I was too focused on beating the levels because I wanted to play Act 2. Classic Sonic in Forces however lmfao yeah it's a fucking dumpster fire tbh
Sonic Generations was a visual spectacle, and it had the gameplay to back it up; I've been playing since Sonic 1 and 2D Sonic here was some of the best in the entire series handsdown.
The set pieces and level design for generations are top tier asf, I was so excitied for forces thinking it was gonna be like generations with original levels but ahhh nope
Despite all the overuse Sega’s been doing of this guy, I really do love Classic Sonic in Generations. It was just the coolest thing to happen to the series at the time, and his stages were actually pretty good.
Disappointing to know that "professionals" at Sonic Team can't for the life of them recreate Classic Sonic 2D or 3D. Yet the fans be doing it on a daily basis, even on fucking Roblox for crying out loud. Looking at you Sonic Onset Adventure.
@@theonlybilge The Genesis games are well documented enough that source code really wouldn't change much. They've been disassembled (reverse engineered into something that can act like source code) and Sonic 3 & Knuckles basically has a source port in the form of Sonic 3 AIR.
12:14 This is one of the most frustrating things about Forces for me. They made Green Hill into a desert, but there weren't any desert mechanics. They turned the forest into a Casino, yet there are only ever either casino level design or forest level design in any level. Why can't I swing on a vine into a slot machine or climb a tree to escape a pinball section? There was so much potential with mixing and matching these level themes which could've given Forces some semblance of identity. Ultimately, its the terrible controls and level design that ruin the game for me, but the fact that the unique level twists are always purely aesthetic is the biggest missed potential in my book.
I still think that Generations is the best 3D Sonic game along with Sonic Adventure. It's a shame that Forces didn't follow through with everything that made Generations so good and only copied it at a superficial level.
Thank you!!! Someone has finally realize the genius 3D plane that the level design takes advantage of, I've always admired how you could see the different pathways in the background that you could have taken or that you will end up at, For example in rooftop run Act 1, you can see one of the area's that you'd end up at in the background, but you still make it there despite being in 2D Or in speed highway, hiw there will be a spring or a rail right next to you but it's on a different pathway, emulating the level design of the genisis days but now you can see that there is anith path and it's up to you to find it. it's so amazing and i wish forces took note of it
Classic sonic is my favorite sonic, mainly due to mania, I lost my love of modern sonic after forces, but I started to appreciate him again after generations, but I completely lost faith in tails, even after generations.
This video explains my excitement for Sonic Supsrstars along with my Issues with Wonder. (if that debate is still going on if anyone sees this comment) If you're making a 2.5D then take advantage of it being 2.5D! It’s what makes the classic levels in generations so fun to play through along with how they handle the l camera making them feel alive and beautiful. And most of that seems to be applied with Superstars except for how the camera will work, they probably can’t do much which I assume the reason being because of the limitations when bringing the physics from Mania to a 2.5D but I might be wrong with one of the screenshots of lagoon city zone so it could be that they just couldn’t do much when having co-op in mind but they still did an amazing job with making the levels feel alive with scenarios happening in the background. My issue with Mario Wonder is while it does have cool new mechanics and the art style looks pretty, it still has that same issue with the NSMB games where it’s just flat jpeg bullshit with SOME 3D models, they never take advantage of 2.5D which makes them so boring to look at and when they do take advantage of it, in this case, Wonder they do it in the most boring way possible. Even Kirby did this 10x better, they don’t do much with RTDL & SA but they go all out with TD & PRB taking full advantage of the fact that the game is 2.5D. If Wonder took notes from Superstars or the Kirby games on the 3Ds by going full 2.5D and abandoned everything that resembles past 2D Mario entries then it would be on par if not better than something like Superstars
unrelated to the main topic but 4:46 i just replayed generations a few days ago and DEAR GOD this clip happened to me so many times while i was revisiting the level to collect the red rings i can't believe this boi's placement wasn't intentional
im easily a modern/3d sonic fan but the classic sonic levels in generations are easily my favorite part of the game. theyre just so incredibly designed to carry this satisfying sense of momentum and flow, especially crisis city- that level is AMAZING to play the spindash i find to be comparable to the spindash in sa1. if youve memorized the stage and have good reflexes and timing, you can use it to skip large portions of a level, but its not SO overpowered that anybody can pull that off successfully/consistently. its very satisfying and encouraging of the inherently speedrunny nature of most sonic games so classic sonics control in forces is one of my biggest gripes about the game. his inclusion was unnecessary to begin with, but if the level design wasnt bad enough, they had to completely fuck up his physics too? i was really excited for this game, but no joke, the moment i got to THAT part in chemical plant where the game intentionally slows sonic down to a crawl just to force you to spindash up a measly ramp, it hit me like a sack of bricks how much they phoned it in for this game. i still cant comprehend why the hell they put classic sonic in just to butcher him this much.
This video exemplify why I always head for the classic stages. It shows off the 3d aspect of what the stages could show you. Rooftop Run is a great stage to just appreciate the many object layers in the beginning.
Something I always think is the “team” in the Forces teaser is talking about Sonic *TEAM* , and people took it so that the Generations and Colors team made the game.
One thing I did love about Classic Sonic in Generations compared to Forces was the control mapping. Of course this game came out before Mania so the Drop Dash didn't exist yet but I really did love that the Spin Dash was implemented in the square button, saving so much time and effort when controlling this character. I was unfortunately really pissed they removed that in Forces so I'm forced to tilt down and rapidly tap x instead, and that's the same button to jump! There are literally so many buttons on any platform that they could've easily mapped the controls better.
I remember replaying the Classic Sonic levels and absolutely adoring everything of them and just going like "Yes! Thats how you design a classic Sonic game!" A lot.
Coming back to Generations after Forces made my old dogs come to life, my girlfriend came back, my parents look younger and it reversed global warming. It's that impressive when it comes to scope in both of Sonic's interpretations
I've been replaying Generations and Classic Sonic gameplay was WAYYYY better then I remember. The controls work well and the level design is so fun. Killing the blimp in Rooftop run was an amazing mix of classic S3&K style cutscene and modern level theming.
You know what else in Generations deserves praise? The splits. It's perfect for a game series designed around of speed and replying levels. It's an idea so good it should be in every game.
@@wistfulanthophila9317 Whenever you pass a checkpoint you've already passed on a previous run of the level it will give you a plus or minus the difference between the two runs. A green minus if faster, a red plus if slower. It's similar to what Speedrunnners do and for Sonic I think it's a good idea.
I kept getting this spammed in my recommendations since yesterday and I finally decided to watch it and I dont regret it. I'm glad the algorithm is treating you right!
I’m curious what Mark will talk about next since not only has Roger Craig Smith ended his run as Sonics voice but Pontac and Graff have left as writers now. The meta era may be ending.
Imagine being Sonic team, the guys who have more failures to their name than any other franchise could survive, and to see a fangame creator get more acclaim than any game in your franchise in decades. A game so good it had people convinced "Sonic games will be good now" only to follow Mania up with Sonic Forces.... That feel when a fangame spanks your AAA ass in front of the whole class.
Kirby 64 kinda does a similar thing except minus the three path thing. Which is probably why it’s one of my favorites in the series, it just shows that a small change in the camera angles can change a whole lot
THANK YOU!! I have ALWAYS wanted to talk about this. I feel like classic sonic in generations is a good platformer, but not a very good classic sonic game. there's a lot that they missed, like ring boxes being very scarce, no sheilds without an ability, and the spindash being mapped to a button press and being strong as a bullet but it feels so good to play and it works really well. really underappreciated.
TIL that Sonic Forces used an engine recoded from Lost World (recorded from Generations'engine) instead of the complete engine used for Generations. What I didn't learn; WHY?!?!
Sonic generations's classic segments is honestly one of the best 2.5D games I've ever played. The only 2.5D game I think does a better job than it is Kirby 64.
I don't understand how it's been 10 years since Generations but I'm still vividly upset that they go out of their way to add a Classic Sonic half of the game and STILL PUT 2D IN THE 3D LEVELS OH MY GOD.
Kinda reminds me of Kirby 64 and the bosses of the Sonic Rush games. It's interesting seeing how developers can exploit the 0.5 in 2.5D. Hope that game developers can further abuse the creative and mind-bending potential of the concept. Just being able to see the alternative paths RIGHT BEHIND THE PATH YOU'RE CURRENTLY ON is really cool! Tropical Freeze takes a lot of notes from Classic Sonic's stages and is just as chaotically fun. Really, 2.5D is just something weird yet amazing.
My guy really just said that sonic jam was the last time we have seen classic sonic before generations. SONIC JAM IS A COLLECTION. there were plenty of collections of classic sonic after that. AND sonic pocket adventure
The only problems generation have is half of the side missions, camera control (which was none), and the story. Other than that the game was pretty damn good.
There is a glitch that allows you to see Classic Sonic in full 3D and it is AMAZING! You should try it because it is pretty easy. (You can find the glitch on a channel called Son Of A Glitch)
I liked Classic Sonic in Generations, but playing Sonic 3 and Sonic 1 constantly over lockdown has meant that I have now have noticed the incredible difference in the physics and it feels slightly strange to go back to.

Damn, I play Generations every pecking day and i never ever knew you could slide under there. Bloody fantastic game. When I finished my first play through, I had no idea that classic would have an even better spindash if I spammed the button. However, it was only after basically 100%'ing the game, that I stopped replaying modern's states over and over again and pages some more attention to classic's. And damn, I was kinda sad that I hadn't given these levels the credit they deserved, equally as good as modern stages.
12:17 also about forces green hill, what the fuck is with the happy-ass music? I’d kinda get it if it was literally just the green hill theme, but what’s the point of making an entirely new track for a level only to have it somehow fit _less?_ same with the music for modern’s first level. Like “oh yeah man can’t wait to boot up some sonic unleashed and fight dark gaia while listening to the stage builder music from smash bros brawl” like yeah it’s a fine song but wtf is it doing _there?_
@@SilverSpireZ oh ofc, I just didn’t think it needed mentioning due to how clearly awful it is lol Lots of people said it’s because they used Genesis instruments, but as someone that makes Genesis covers of various songs in my free time, that’s definitely not it. @@funnyusername4774 Fair enough. I still think it was a dumb choice considering Generations and Mania didn’t use them, but that’s not the problem in and of itself. Especially if you listen to remixes like Lil Boulder’s, which sounds amazing. The specific instruments chosen just sound terrible.
@@SilverSpireZ both used them (generations did in the first three levels, mania has some kinda peppered here and there) but neither exclusively used them. Either way the generations songs that did use some Genesis instruments would still sound great even without the the “regular” instruments because they’re not designed to cause pain to earlobes, unlike forces lol
One of my favorite childhood games was Disney's Tarzan Action Game, where you play as Tarzan in a 3D world, but follow a side-scrolling path, much like Classic Sonic's gameplay. The most exciting parts in the Tarzan game for me was when the camera shifted while we the players kept running left to right, similar to what you described. So, naturally, I was super excited when I found out that gameplay style was gonna become part of the Sonic franchise, starting in Sonic Unleashed, which I seriously hope it's ported to PC. The platforming and controls are more solid than in Generations imo. When done right, 2D does work quite well in a 3D Sonic game.
Is it just me or does SplashDash sound like LS Mark, I asked on his subreddit and the post was deleted, I tried posting it again and yet again it was deleted, but this time I got a PM saying I should “stop asking questions” WE CANNOT BE SILENCED! THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! *YOU ARE N*
Y’all don’t give these games credit tbh..we could’ve got more games like Unleashed, colors, generations but the fans didn’t support those games like they do now. People forget how companies and shit work..if the sales and everything are good they’ll stick with it. If the sales aren’t good they don’t stick with it
Sonic Generations was not the first Sonic game I ever came upon. That honor belongs to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, one of the games I remember my child self play most fondly. But I did play a demo of Sonic Generations at an electronics store. I played City Escape. So, as I was clumsily (I was still very young) running through the CITY, *BOOM!* A giant truck blasts from a building and starts chasing me! I was running for my life! I remember even seeing it having, like, saws coming from the engine, and the truck was running on buildings like it was nothing, obliterating everything in its path! It scared the crap out of me, but it was awesome escaping from that truck.

I actually finished sonic generations again recently and I agree with everything you said I always enjoyed speed running the classic stages back in 2011 and even now , wasnt bored during the playthrough, the levels are so damn well made I really don't care much about the tweaked physics if I wanna play the same classic sonic I'll go boot up sonic 1,2,3&k and even recently mania the gameplay in generations seems like the evolution it was trying to be, even the op spin dash feels great when you use it perfectly the stages have a lot of memorable locations and events they mix up the events from the original stage between the two acts classic gets a nice spin on it like how in the modern stage of speed highway you dash through the roads and roofs and surfaces while in the classic stage you are going through the buildings like the hotel , mall , apartments and etc... I can bring many examples on how the stages feel good unlike the classic stages in forces which seem to use the same "lego block" over and over just to make a stage sunset heights is the first and best classic stage in sonic forces after that none of the stages feel even a bit fun , they all feel blocky
The one aspect about this video I can't really agree with is the fact that you state that people are JUST NOW going back and giving the Classic stages in Generations shit. People have never really cared for the Classic stages. No one really ever thought they where absolutely terrible but in comparison to the classics and even Mania, the Classic stages in Generations aren't really anything to sneeze at. However I do agree that the sheer amount of effort put into the spectacle of the Classic stages in Generations should not go unrecognized. There was actual thought and effort put into these stages unlike a certain other game.
Sonic 2 and 3 also did a lot of psuedo-3D and 2.5D stuff in it's level design to really push the Genesis to its limits, most notably when Sonic runs around some pole in a 3D like fashion very fast or stuff being in the foreground. In fact the director/main designer of Sonic 1,2 and 3 said he treated the games like it was 3D not 2D, both Generations and Mania honored that 2.5D level design very well while Forces was too fixated on it having to be 2D all the way because ''thats how those ancient 16 bit platform games were''.

@@johnjohnson6142 I'll believe it when I see it.

Looking forward to more!

it was really nice how generations classic actually inhabited a 3D space with all the corners and turns he goes around as opposed to how flat forces classic's levels were
Agreed
It really sucks that Classic's continued appearances somtimes for dumb reasons (looking at you Forces) really taint what was supposed to be his one time return and how good it actually was. A once beloved comeback has turned into a slowly descending pit of nostalgia bait.
Why not just have Classic in 3D, in the Classic timeline, with no Modern Sonic?
@@charliekahn4205 yeah it's that easy, leave classic to his games and modern to his.
The idea of Classic sonic itself really shows Sega loves Nostalgia baiting
True
I don’t think I understand the argument of nostalgia baiting. I think a lot of people prefer the games that the “classic” design of the character came from, as well as his design. If sega ever made a triple A game with a design like to old one with a lot of the gameplay aspects, modern fans would get pissy so they keep throwing the two designs in with each other. Personally I think the modern design of sonic is a bastardization of his original design, so I don’t see it as nostalgia bait so much as sega trying to appeal to everybody and failing spectacularly both counts
@@aidenpomeroy1848
Do you see Nintendo trying to market white Kirby, fat Pikachu, brown-haired Link or blue-shirt-red-overalls Mario as „Classic“ versions of these characters?
TLDR:
Using the Classic 16 bit aesthetic for new games: Good
Shoving a sanitized cutesified version of the Classic Sonic design into every other modern (supposedly) 3D game: Bad
"But wait I thought Iizuka said he wanted to close that chapter of Sonic and move on to bigger and better things."

I'd like to point my blame of the shit stream at Iizuka and the higher ups at SEGA that call all the shots.
Imagine if the source code for the Mega Drive games was leaked, it would be just like Doom.
@@theonlybilge The Genesis games are well documented enough that source code really wouldn't change much. They've been disassembled (reverse engineered into something that can act like source code) and Sonic 3 & Knuckles basically has a source port in the form of Sonic 3 AIR.

This is one of the most frustrating things about Forces for me.

Hi
@@BitchChill Hi!
I can smell the opinion police coming for you
The scale of the classic levels was always one of my favorite things about generations, glad to see a video appreciating that
Thank you!!! Someone has finally realize the genius 3D plane that the level design takes advantage of, I've always admired how you could see the different pathways in the background that you could have taken or that you will end up at, For example in rooftop run Act 1, you can see one of the area's that you'd end up at in the background, but you still make it there despite being in 2D Or in speed highway, hiw there will be a spring or a rail right next to you but it's on a different pathway, emulating the level design of the genisis days but now you can see that there is anith path and it's up to you to find it. it's so amazing and i wish forces took note of it
Sonic Subverts expectations when the game is successful
finally someone appreciates classic in generations epic video
Yes exactly

"It's hard to imagine a Sonic Forces fan using the word desolate."
That insult was absolutely ruthless, and I love it.
The spin dash in generations is BASED my second favorite to use. You just have so much power and it's fun trying to do trick jumps with it
im easily a modern/3d sonic fan but the classic sonic levels in generations are easily my favorite part of the game. theyre just so incredibly designed to carry this satisfying sense of momentum and flow, especially crisis city- that level is AMAZING to play
the spindash i find to be comparable to the spindash in sa1. if youve memorized the stage and have good reflexes and timing, you can use it to skip large portions of a level, but its not SO overpowered that anybody can pull that off successfully/consistently. its very satisfying and encouraging of the inherently speedrunny nature of most sonic games
so classic sonics control in forces is one of my biggest gripes about the game. his inclusion was unnecessary to begin with, but if the level design wasnt bad enough, they had to completely fuck up his physics too? i was really excited for this game, but no joke, the moment i got to THAT part in chemical plant where the game intentionally slows sonic down to a crawl just to force you to spindash up a measly ramp, it hit me like a sack of bricks how much they phoned it in for this game. i still cant comprehend why the hell they put classic sonic in just to butcher him this much.
"From the team of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations"
Why did you lie SEGA?
I mean it sure was made by the people who made Colors and Lostworld
Maybe they lied to increase sales? I bet it wouldn’t sell as well if it said “From the team of sonic colors and lost world” but that’s just a guess. 🤔
It *was* made by the people who made colors and generations. And Lost World. And 06.
This video exemplify why I always head for the classic stages.
It shows off the 3d aspect of what the stages could show you.
Rooftop Run is a great stage to just appreciate the many object layers in the beginning.
The level design in generations is amazing. There are so many divergant paths that in any other game would only be background elements
I don't understand how everything in Sonic Forces looks like a place-holder.
This video explains exactly why classic sonic was fun in generations, they were my favorite parts in the game!
I remember replaying the Classic Sonic levels and absolutely adoring everything of them and just going like "Yes! Thats how you design a classic Sonic game!" A lot.
Green hill in forces literally looks like it was created in a level maker
"Sonic mania plus sonic forces"
Was that intended lol
I'm glad someone's talking about how well Classic Sonic was brought into the 3D world in Generations.
I recently played generations for the first time, and I loved it.
Classic Sonic: *exists*
Sega: I can milk you.
It's an idea so good it should be in every game.
what do youmean by splits?

Imagine being Sonic team, the guys who have more failures to their name than any other franchise could survive, and to see a fangame creator get more acclaim than any game in your franchise in decades. That feel when a fangame spanks your AAA ass in front of the whole class.
Glad someone praises how much the camera moves around feel like its something people forget how important it is
Kirby 64 kinda does a similar thing except minus the three path thing.

Still not as bad as the instrumentation. Geez, it’s seriously one of the worst songs in the whole series. It honestly hurts listening to it.
@@SilverSpireZ oh ofc, I just didn’t think it needed mentioning due to how clearly awful it is lol
Lots of people said it’s because they used Genesis instruments, but as someone that makes Genesis covers of various songs in my free time, that’s definitely not it. They just chose the most grating synth from that style of things for some godforsaken reason.
*YOU ARE N*
SplashDash is that LS Mark from the alternate dimension.
@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770
That’s right.
SplashDash used to be the past version of LS Mark but they retconned it.
whenever people wonder where 2D mario can go after mario maker, this is the video i'm gonna show them.
I'll pile on the candy
It's such a pretty sight
It makes the food taste a dandy
But my tummy hurts all night
I'll put in some ingredients
But keep the rest for me
I'm not just disobedient
I'm careful can't you see
It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake
If you're way is hazy
You gotta do the cooking by the book
You know you can't be lazy
Never use a messy recipe
Your cake may end up crazy
If you do the cooking by the book
Then you'll have a cake
We gotta have it made
You know that I love cake
Finally it's time to make a cake
Making food is just like science
With tools that blend and baste
And every fun appliance gives the food a different taste
It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake
If you're way is hazy
You gotta do the cooking by the book
You know you can't be lazy
Never use a messy recipe
Your cake may end up crazy
If you do the cooking by the book
Then you'll have a cake
We gotta have it made
You know that I love cake
Finally it's time to make a cake
We gotta have it made
You know that I love cake
Finally it's time to make a
You gotta do the cooking by the book
Cake!
I actually finished sonic generations again recently
and I agree with everything you said
I always enjoyed speed running the classic stages back in 2011 and even now , wasnt bored during the playthrough, the levels are so damn well made I really don't care much about the tweaked physics if I wanna play the same classic sonic I'll go boot up sonic 1,2,3&k and even recently mania
the gameplay in generations seems like the evolution it was trying to be, even the op spin dash feels great when you use it perfectly
the stages have a lot of memorable locations and events
they mix up the events from the original stage between the two acts
classic gets a nice spin on it
like how in the modern stage of speed highway you dash through the roads and roofs and surfaces while in the classic stage you are going through the buildings like the hotel , mall , apartments and etc...
I can bring many examples on how the stages feel good
unlike the classic stages in forces which seem to use the same "lego block" over and over just to make a stage
sunset heights is the first and best classic stage in sonic forces
after that none of the stages feel even a bit fun , they all feel blocky
This feels like cybershell had to stop swearing because there's kids around
Tbh this is how I treated classic sonic back then :
Classic stages : parkour.
Modern stages : boost.
2:57 why would i do that?
Splash Dash: wanna know ho to scare a sonic fan? "CLASSIC SONIC"
"Screams"
Me: that scared me as fuck
The one aspect about this video I can't really agree with is the fact that you state that people are JUST NOW going back and giving the Classic stages in Generations shit.
People have never really cared for the Classic stages. No one really ever thought they where absolutely terrible but in comparison to the classics and even Mania, the Classic stages in Generations aren't really anything to sneeze at.
However I do agree that the sheer amount of effort put into the spectacle of the Classic stages in Generations should not go unrecognized. There was actual thought and effort put into these stages unlike a certain other game.
THANK YOU for talking about what I exactly always thought about Generations and Forces.
You sound exactly like LS Mark you could easily replace him lol
Sonic 2 and 3 also did a lot of psuedo-3D and 2.5D stuff in it's level design to really push the Genesis to its limits, most notably when Sonic runs around some pole in a 3D like fashion very fast or stuff being in the foreground. In fact the director/main designer of Sonic 1,2 and 3 said he treated the games like it was 3D not 2D, both Generations and Mania honored that 2.5D level design very well while Forces was too fixated on it having to be 2D all the way because ''thats how those ancient 16 bit platform games were''.
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
(Ooh, give you up)
(Ooh, give you up)
(Ooh) never gonna give, never gonna give (give you up)
(Ooh) never gonna give, never gonna give (give you up)
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down

Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
