Good to see others doing this and sharing how. Found this on the Ladyada x0xb0x page, regarding VCF offset:
"There is an 'official' tuning for the VCF. According to the Roland TB-303 manual, when playing C1 (65.4Hz) with the cutoff frequency knob set to 50%, saw waveform, and resonance knob at 100%, the resonance frequency should be 500Hz (give or take 100Hz depending on how it sounds to you)."
I wonder if anyone's given that method a go with the TD-3, to get the offset set just right? I might give it a try when I get mine, but it's gonna be a while yet because I was a bit indecisive about whether I wanted a blue/red or to wait for silver, and missed my chance to order. So looks like I'll be waiting after all.
JesusGreen Thank you for the information thats very interesting, i didn‘t know that.Hope you get yours fast 😉
Thanks for the info! Had mine since release and intend on moding it today, will try out these specs :)
Thanks, tuned mine this way too
And still, it will not sound like a Roland TB-303.
@@synthetic24 As someone who has owned a 303 and have friends who do own or have owned them in the past you sound like a clown, no two 303s even sound the same. The TD3 sounds like a real, live, actual 303... because it is one.
This mod is super simple to do and transforms the TD3 into a much smoother sounding synth. Totally recommended!!
Now that actually sounds more like a real 303. My gripe with this machine was that it too much excitement, too bright. My favorite tones on the 303 are when the filter is muted.
and now I'm going to order one :)
The new SMD components are much "better" regarding tolerances noise etc than the original components which unfortunately means that synths can sound a tiny bit more plastic-y. Also trimpots and other component value change over time which micght be the reason the original TB-303 sounds darker. Going to open mine now!
Thanks. this was so easy and worth it! You can get it plenty bright by raising the envelope high and decay still even if you take the VCF offset pretty far down. It gives me so much more play in the vowelly-ness of the filter now. It sounds so much more foreboding being able to go that low now. Honestly I almost didnt want to put my backplate back on feeling like I'd want to mess with the offset every time I use it. I put it back so I dont overdo it and break the trimmer.
Nice job baby. I have a four month old, I'll try this with a new born that's on its way.
Thanks for the Tweek.
( Both are SR's BTW... 👍 🇮🇪 )
Nice video... short and to the point. Nice to hear the changes in context as well. Thanks.
Thank you for feedback Scott🙏
Did this to mine on day one. Behringer did a bang up job and I've already ordered a second one to mod... :-)
Haha this is a game changer. Would consider getting one now. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Brilliant!! Glad it’s a easy tweak! My unit comes in soon. Thank you 😊
-. J \ have fun with your TD if it arrive 👍😀
Hmm, I like the TD-3 sound already but might have to try this! Great video, thanks!
Yes it sounds right out of the box. With the little mod it sounds a bit more authentically. But its not a must. Thanks for your feedback.
@@Creamtronic Kudos to Behringer for including the option to adjust it internally though. I've seen comparison videos where it sounds rather different to other 303-clones and it was clear the major difference was a more open VFC!
That changes a lot. Thx so much
Philippe 🙏Enjoy you TD3😀
Thanks! Mine sounds great now :)
Nice gonna do that to mine this week. It's way to bright sounding sometimes.
..the TD-3 does sound brighter to me than a TB-303.. but was thinking that could be welcome change.. that is awesome that you can set the cutoff to a piont where the sound almost drops out instead of using the volume control.. on a Juno 106 you have wider range of cutoff.. I will have to buy 2 of these one silver and one black to have a reference point and set each different from each other...
Nice idea, have fun with it :-)
Exact mod I did when I opened it up and looked around. I felt the default setting was too bright. Nice video.
Thank you
Thx so much, I made it darkest. btw. for those whose t was ''factory'' detuned, vr11 screw!!!! it need to be tuned in a daw though with reference notes of best two or 3 synths, not just tune it to what sounds great ya know
Hi, look at the first comment of this video there is a description how to tune it org. like. I used a eq plug-in in my daw to tuned it right. If you tuned it to the darkest you lost to much of the highs.Less is more 😉
I dont understand. Can you elaborate please? My td3 is so out of tune it sounds like garbage. And when I try to tune it it goes out of tune within seconds. I dont know if I got a lemon but none of my other analog gear behaves this way
Is this inter-linked with the filter shape as in the other 303 clones and the original? whereby you can get more of a 'wow' shape on the filter when the cutoff trim is made somewhat darker?
Yes! Nice video
thank you!
Thank you! More of these td3 mod tuto please
oh f*(k yeah, that worked perfectly!
thank you so much for sharing
How much height do you think you reduce by removing the bottom half of the case (not including the I/O section)? I'm getting one at some point but need to reduce it's height to fit it into a case packed with other gear.
its
Hey. Do you know how much does it has to be turned to sound like a real tb 303 filter?
Hi, look at the first comment, there is a hint how to tweak it near the original.
Does anyone know which trimmer should I adjust to tune it? Mine gets sharper# in higher octaves
I am really interested to do this on my own unit, but how do you know how far to go? I am afraid of wasting my time in doing this, putting it all back together and realizing it is worse! Can you do this while the unit is plugged in, powered on and running? I believe that is what you are doing, but want to make sure I don't fry anything, or myself.
Andrew Henderson hello , yes i am tweaking the screw while it is plugged in. But i think you dont have to do , the tb3 sounds good out of the box. But if you want do Look at the first comment of this Video there is a discription of the freq you should set. I run the the tb3 through an eq plugin to match the freq.
@@Creamtronic Thank you so much for the reply, I really appreciate it. I am glad to hear that you were able to tweak, while the unit was plugged in and powered on. This would be much easier to test, then making an adjustment, then testing it after the fact, potentially going back and forth. I know I don't 'have to' do the change, but what I am hoping for, is having the sound disappear a bit more, when the cut off is all the way down. The way it is set from the factory, quite a bit still comes through, so I am hopeful the adjustment will allow for a steeper cut on the filter, when it is all the way counter clock wise, muting more of the sound that comes through.
what is vca balance?
which size needs to have the screw drivers?
good démo TD 3
do u have the pattern noted?
Wow no wonder why mine didn't sound that great.. it was adjusted about mid way up from factory. I turned it all the way to left.. sounds better.
If this is an option that's built into the board why not have a knob to make it easier to adjust?
Loads of analogue synthesizers have trim pots for adjustments. Analogue systems drift over time, and the trim pots are to reset it if you have access to a scope, analyser and the documentation.
Is there a documented solution to add CV input for modulating the VCF?
Hi, there is a vcf input for modulation its just called Filter in 😉
@@Creamtronic It was my understanding that this input is for filtering external sound sources (not cv modulation of filter). Is this incorrect?
@@csselement yes this is incorrect , the filter in Input is the vcf cv input for the TD3. So there is no need for moding a cv vcf Input it is still there👍. Try it out and you will see. In one if my Sessions i use this input with an ext. Lfo to change the cutoff

@@Creamtronic I picked up a TD-3 and the 'filter in' actually is for filtering an input signal (not CV control of the TD-3 filter). Disappointed!
is there anyway to check which firmware version is on your machine
I think is the pre firmeware before the last one.
Download the music tribe software from Behringer’s site. Once you connect via USB it will tell you firmware or if there is an update. Super easy and user friendly :)

noice..
can the filter be controlled by midi CC?
no
No
Only the attack
Nope
nopee Nopeee Da hast Du vollkommen recht.👍
@@Creamtronic und vorallem
Das muss ich noch erwähnen. Viele leute kaufen nostalgische originals. Zb mpc 2000xl
Weil der sample sound so warm ist.
Yo
Is there a trimpot for resonance?)
I think no
Has anyone used an octave pedal with this?
Way late response but I just connected mine to an octave pedal for work on an upcoming live set. It sounds great but can become a bit muddy depending on the pedal settings. Not sure what you're working with but I'm using a DigiTech whammy pitch
I want to do this but I don’t want to void my warranty 🥵🥶
You will be fine. No worries my friend. You could make a note to yourself, how many turns you made.
