Hey! Guess what. You're Awesome and thanks for watching. I promise this is the best DND tutorial based on a 30 year old Jeff Foxworthy joke you'll ever see. Stick around for more and vote in the comments for which subclass you'd like to next.
I love me some dragons.

The "Drake still allowed within a hundred yards of a school" bit aged like fine wine xD
LMAO
The Drake warden is what the beast master was always supposed to be
Word. Who needs a bear when you can have a whole element-breathing draconic mount that eventually flies? (Sorry Trinket)
But even cooler
I agree
Beastmaster with the snake does better DPR than fighters do so cry
It's not quite Dragonlance but it's close.
"Did the eragon bookseries play such a pivotal role in your upbringing that it birthed the livelong dream of becoming a dragon rider" I´ve never been called out so hard
To play Eragon more accurately a bladesinger/paladin/drake warden ranger multiclass, but good luck meeting those stat requirements. Even a gestalt build would have a hard time meeting those minimums.
If a Dm ever handwaves the stats, stat role jackpot or some other thing I'd play it in a heartbeat.
@@woutvanostaden1299 I´m not into Eragon any more, I think the ending was super disappointing. But I still am into dragons and dragonriders
@@anikanele7958 Never read Dragon but always been a Dragon lover. Thank Spyro for that.
Drake warden and swarmkeeper are 2 of the few subclasses that make me wanna take ranger straight class all the way to 20
I say yeah. Thought I also like Horizon Walker at 10th - x-Men Nightcrawler (the Ranger version)!
@@leodouskyron5671 playing one now, yea i can agree there too at least until 15. that resistance is nice
The double Drake joke is so much funnier now 😂 🤣
Drakewarden is honestly one of the coolest subclasses they have ever made.
Goose-drake.
I am become the Terror, behold Her magnificent honks and tremble.
Fear the Cobra Chicken
We had a drake warden ranger in our Icewind Dale campaign. She was a Dragonborn named Nala and she was actually really cool and was a super powerful member of the group. And her drake was hilarious and had his own personality. There was one time we had him send a message to another town and after a few days we wondered if he had made it so she summoned him back and he was so pissed. Because he had JUST got to the town before she summoned him back but it was before he could deliver the message
I overlay The PHB Ranger, Tasha’s Optional Features and Fizban’s Subclasses in order to XYZ summon the ultimate animal companion build, the Drake Warden.
Drake warden is unironicly my favorite subclass in all of dnd just ahead of swashbuckler
the Eragon thing in the beginning hit close to home for me
I'm sorry but I've been a ranger stan since I started playing DnD. I'm lucky enough to have been in a long running campaign where there's a lot of wilderness exploration so that even the "crappy" PHB abilities like favored terrain come in HUGE in terms of avoiding or getting an advantage on dangerous encounters. Simple fact is that anyone who doesn't like Rangers either don't know how to use it or the DM doesn't know how to plan with that class/player in mind.
Im a Ranger stan here, Ranger has GOOD Features and GREAT Spelllist, people just use it wrong
Tasha especially is a good buffed Ranger with Favored Foe being esentially a better Hunters Mark(Cost only its own resources AND you allways proc it when it lands unlike Hunters Mark where you HAVE to pray it land)
All the subclass features(Except Horizon and Monster Slayer) and Non Ranger Exclusive Spells are also great
Fog Cloud, Pass without Trace, Goodberry, Conjure Animals/Woodland Beings, Locate Object, Spike Growth and Plant Growth, Speak with animals
The list goes on
Even Skill Proficiency Ranger somehow is more Skill monkey than the Rogue
@@RenoKyrie I gotta disagree with you on Horizon Walker and Monster Slayer. Monster Slayer is OP as hell in my opinion by virtue of Hunter's sense alone.
Horizon Walker is AMAZING if you know how to utilize it. Which shouldn't be hard to figure out if you informed your DM at character creation that you wanted to play this subclass. A quality DM should plan their campaign in such a way that it should give every player the opportunity to use their character to the fullest extent.
@@RenoKyrie and I absolutely prefer favored enemy to favored foe. I don't need an extra d4 on damage to make my characters viable. I prefer utility in a ranger to marginal amounts of extra damage.
@@gollumandeowynHorizon Walker and Monster Slayer need Bonus Action and a super specific Range to proc their extra damage feature
Hunter Collosus slayer only need below max health
Swarmkeeper, Feywanderer, and ESPECIALLY Gloomstalker are only part of their attack action, Gloomstalker is arguably the strongest since its straight up a extra attack
Drakewarden is weird becuase you need the Drake to be in the range but at least UNLIKE Horizon and Monster you boost someone else and use its own reaction
A *Dragon-rider* could also just be a Bard that rolled a Nat 20 on a seduction Charisma (Persuasion) check.
Plot Twist: The Dragon tops.
@anthonyelie4700 That's why a Plasmoid Bard can be so much fun, the "versatility"....
Fun fact about Eragon series:
When I read the second book, "Eldest", I was so enthralled by the story of main character's cousin, that I straight up skipped all chapters that were not about him. So when at the end of the book they met and I learned Eragon became an elf I was confused to say the least.
Hah! I did the opposite and when he met back up and Cabed the twins skulls in I was like: WAIT. HOLD UP! This dude got awesome!
Rohan on his way to be the coolest character in the whole story.
Turned up for dnd content, got a bonus roasting of the Eragon Movie. 10/10
10 year old me knew two things about dnd rangers had animal companions and dragons were in the game. took over a decade but my dream became reality.
Your channel has grown so much, proud of you dude. Been here since 22k
I appreciate it!
The greatest strength and weakness of the Drakewarden is that you are not the same character fantasy as you from Tier to Tier.
You start off as Ranger Mulan with a scrappy Dragon buddy that unlike a familiar is tough enough to get in there. They are pet sized. They are great at keeping watch and are the great annoyance of DMs that like to check if party members fell asleep and they surprise the party.
Then Tier 2-3. Dragon gets a level up in size and now you are in how to train your dragon the D&D version. they are Toothless on the way that they are more a partner then a flying buddy. And though you can’t ride them in the air but you focus of having a pet that can attack with your summons, pull people into your traps, you give them a speed boost and use them to kite enemies and run down fleeing people and capture them with little to no danger to you. Heck they are a full blown second character. That you can play cards with.
But then tier 4, after your buddy reads Dragonlance novels and gets a bright idea. You ride them in the sky. Now you are even more likely to archer but you can be forgiven if you pick up Mounted Combat and a lance and doing a flyby attack with a long pointy stick. You become Marine air corp for the Middle fantasy Ages you fight anywhere land sea and air with advantages to suit. (Rangers have Climb and swim speed so you literally can fight everywhere).
The weakness is that the last tier is so attractive it overwhelms all the others. Fact is you can summon a Draconic Spirit at level 9 as a Wizard or Bard and fly on that if that is your goal, but the Ranger is go anywhere do what ever you need fighter.
(Those that want to add to it a single level dip into Cleric - Domains of Twilight, Pease and Light make most sense or a Rogue are good ways to power up but this class wants you to stay Ranger so more then one level is making it even less likely you get the dragonrider fun).
Gotta multiclass one level in Bard to play the Pokémon theme song whenever my lil dwake goes for the jugular.
One issue is that some 3rd level Draconic gifts are the same as being a Dragon born, which means you're losing out if you take that race, which is a pity as flavour wise it just seems perfect - your class is a part of your heritage.
A Dragon born Drake Warden just seems to fit, and it opens up a lot of role-play potential.
And the back story could be interesting.
The 3rd level ribbon and Dragon born species only have the language in common. The class covers this as in the book the class says if you can choose a language but it gives Dragonic as the first choice so RAW you can just pick another language. The same would be true for Kobolds and lizardfolk. So you are covered there.
Eh Draconic Gift is very much a ribbon feature. I'm sure any good DM would work with you to make it work, for example giving you advantage on persuasion or intimidation checks vs creatures that understand draconic.
I intend on making a Dragonborn Drakewarden, and my backstory is that he was orphaned and need to essentially "learn" how to be a Dragonborn, only to realise he literally is the avatar of Bahamut or other dragon-god
the intro is a personal attack
Mentioning Ty the Tasmanian tiger was an entirely unexpected wave of nostalgia. Gamecube days were peak.
I actually made a subclass that makes thrown weapons badass... Grenadier Artificer. You get to make all types of grenades, your thrown weapons deal splash damage, additional damage, and you can get the return infusion on one without expending an infusion slot. The ultimate attack is, with any thrown weapon, you can take a full round to throw one, and it hits if it misses, crits if it hits, and deals maximum damage if it crits.
My current character is a drakewarden cowboy ✨ loving it so far
My most favorite character I ever built/played was my Drake Warden, I did multiclass with Way of the Ascendant Dragon, but that was a flavor thing. I had so much fun with him, I let my DM play my Drake out of combat, and it was tons of fun. Especially when my party members tried to befriend her and ended up getting bit. Long back story short, my character was a young kitsune (fox kin, played it as a tabxi variant that originated in the faewilds) that lost his family/village and was rescued by bahamut and was further raised by a dragon, but one day the dragon disappeared so he went on a journey to find her. Probably not the most original back story but was so much fun to play.
Thanks for making me feel old, going for the Eragon reference over Pern.
The second query: Yes. Literally all of that. Every part. Especially the last bit. They're such good books. They are why this is one of my top 5 favourite subclasses in the game.
Definitely had a hard time not dying laughing! But.. Yeah I want to try out this subclass for sure.
I have the music of the first Ty the Tasmanian Tiger level in my head and now I need this boomerang build
I’m an aarokocra ranger that has a copper dragon named cooper (very creative I know). I’m an entirely air based character and I’m proud
I love this class... =)
I was not expecting a Tasmanian Tiger throwback, but hey, I'm here for it. And yes, a Boomerang subclass could be fun. You can already do so much, so why not that?
I actually like Swarmkeeper more. Just fun to have a swarm of something as you get utility features and being a ranger.
The first 5e character I actually got to play was a Drake Warden. I took Druidic Warrior at 2nd level for Shillelagh and Guidance, and I had a fucking blast. Even managed to keep pace with the Paladin some of the time. My mext Ranger is going to he a Halfling Beast Master, also using Druidic Warrior, but her main focus is on buffing and enhancing her Beast of the Land mount. The only complication I foresee is figuring out when to take Mounted Combatant, and when to dip two levels of Fighter for the Action Surge and additional fighting style.
Need more dragons
This i such a cool subclass. The only thing i would change is making the drake work like the "find steed"-mount, so you can share your initiative with it. That would make it easier to maneuvre around using it as a mount instead of having to move after your own turn is over.
These could be 2hrs long and would still be amazing! Love it and keep up that amazing work!
Master of miniatures is awesome!
Great video! Would like to see a video on an Artillerist Artificer down the road
Another amazing video. Keep it up.
I'm playing this subclass for ToA. If I don't die, I'm going to be the god damned Predator out there.
0:50 game recognizes game.
Steve was indeed the GOAT.
"The beach witches"
I'm dead
PLEASE do Oath of Conquest next! As somebody who loves the Hellknights from pathfinder, Oath of Conquest scratches that itch perfectly.
0:34 is that merlin! Ooh, that just sent a deep cut tingle down my back!
I for real just started the Eragon series
Hahah just recently played on as my latest campaign character, was a smol boi harengon and me, the DM, and the party agreed that my drake was a corgi dragon
Super underrated channel, found you recently, addicted to ur vids, awesome as usual this round.
So, I still always take old school Favored Enemy as a Ranger because I just like the flavor more.
I'm just starting my 1st DnD campaign (finally) and I'm playing a Drakewarden/moon druid (taking just 2 levels in Druid as my plan right now) and I'm so excited to have fun with my Drake friend. Even at lower level the infuse attack is crazy handy... Yes I am already envisioning riding my drake into combat just to leap off, wild shape into a Brown Bear and just go to town on my target.
Drakewarden is so underrated in my bias opinion.
Me, after seeing this pop up on my notifications: “what the fuck is a drakewarden?”
(7:57) unless you use the Fizban’s buffed version of the race.
This is what ive always wanted in dnd
Two topics I never thought I'd see cross is 1) my interest in DnD and 2) my father-in-law. lol
He's the image you used for thrown weapon fighting.
Lol nice. He's probably better than weapon throwers in dnd.
That's dope, circle of the blight is pretty cool too, it feels like poison ivy from DC comics
I am very much playing my lvl 12 drakewarden like a dragoon with the piercing feat and using lances. Once I can ride the drake while flying with mounted combat and shield mastery, we’ll be flying around the battlefield swooping in with lance attacks. Throw in the spell primal guardian in order to get advantage on strength-based attacks, and hoo-boy
Drake Warden sounds very cool.
About to switch out a Rune Knight fighter for a Swarmkeeper Ranger and its kind of nuts how many intrinsic spells he gets(w/ new Earth Genasi and Fey Touched):
• Blade Ward as a bonus action x proficiency bonus(Earth Genasi)
• Speak with Animals(team up with the DM and make the party sad that they've been feeding the party pet wrong)
• Beast Sense
• Hunter's Mark(Fey Touched)
• Pass without Trace(Earth Genasi)
• Misty Step(Fey Touched)
And all of those spells get added to the spell list too.
I recently made a Thri-Kreen Drakewarden. His drake is actually a dragonfly
Good video. Made me sub.
Should also mention, while in early levels where your mount can't fly if you Mount, if the Mount Grapples you, it can fly with you.
I really should try this class out. I’ve wanted something to the Beast Master for so long and this hits that spot in so many ways.
Great video, Drakewarden is a personal fav of mine that I've been waiting on a chance to play for a while now. Specifically been waiting for a game I know'll go to 11 so I can experience that breath attack just a little bit.
I still think you're being a bit harsh having to bring up the 'Ranger stink' when the stigmas around other classes don't ever seeming to hold them back. Some of the base Ranger features are quite good actually, free expertise, extra movement speeds, ability to turn invisible. They have a good spell list with some great pickups, (Goodberry, Fog Cloud, Pass Without Trace, Aid, Spike Growth, Plant Growth, Summons.)
Next time we get around to Ranger in the rotation here I think a good subclass to cover would be Fey Wanderer. It's a subclass that on it's own looks pretty meh but once you consider the interactions with base Ranger features actually comes out looking pretty neat.
Fey wanderer makes me want to dip swashbuckler😂😅
This man just Rick Rolled us. 10/10 Video.
Dude, if you want to be a dragon-rider, and not have the stigma of being a ranger, I’d recommend Laserllama’s homebrew class called the Magus. It’s essentially the wizard’s equivalent to the Paladin and Ranger, and it has a dragon-riding subclass called the Order of the Scales.
I love the movie and the books. I would’ve never read the books if I didn’t see the movie.
Literally finished a campaign tonight where I played a Drakewarden to level 10. Super fun subclass.
I JUST bought Fizban's so I'm eager to try the drakewarden.
Effectively a *level 15 capstone,* yes please.
That gives _5 levels_ to play with multiclassing!
Either 5 full levels to get some nice benefits, or a 3 level dip into something to still get the subclass features plus two front-loaded single dips.
I’d say go 16 levels for the ASI and 4 levels into whether you multi class into for a subclass and a final ASI.
@AtelierGod Good point, hmm, which multiclass and subclass?
I'm thinking going for ranged damage which could be a Fighter, but which subclass?
But there might be some Rogue subclasses that have synergy?
@@casbot71 Shepard Druid? If the dragon counts as a summon you’ll get some extra HP on it.
@@AtelierGod Mighty Summoner is a 6th level ability....
@@casbot71 I was referring to their spirit of the bear effect which yes the dragon qualifies for.
had a drake warden, he was adventuring with his half brother (father side) in search for his bard father, and yes his drake was the half brother.
I can’t be the only one thinking this but dragon cowboy
Allowed within a hundred yards of a school god fucking damn that was savage
FINALLLY!!! Deff my favourite subclass for ranger (maybe gloom)
there is a reason I ALWAYS take the Fizban's version of dragonborn whenever possible, and it has everything to do with how weak it is
Yes
5:59 No the Temeraire book series came up with it first.
3:30 And that's a thumbs up
To answer all your first questions; YES
When did ranger start meaning tree hunter and not far traveller?
If the ceaseless loathing is all that's required, I am fully qualified to be a Drakewarden.
You forgot bad dragons.
Why would you need that when you have a real one?
Oh thank you.
I've needed a good rickroll
Please do what feels like this subclasses’ cousin in the Wildfire Druid.
Dragonborn draconic sorcerer/drakewarden ranger/ awakened dragon monk
i swear to you steve irwin wouldve wrestled a dragon if he could have
Im deffinitly confused really with Drakewarden
Its both better but also not really than Beastmaster?
Like for sure it has actual usefull features UNLIKE Horizon and Monster Slayer
But i dont know if its on the same tier as Swarmkeeper with its Crowd Control(And Ranger allready have good Crowd Control with Spike Growth, Fog Cloud, and Plant Growth or Conjure Animals/Woodland Beings), Fey Wanderer making the Ranger even MORE a Skill Monkey now getting Charisma Bonuses despite being Wisdom Class(And you support the Party against and when using shutdowns), or the Gloom Stalker the GREATEST Stealth Archer Assassin by far
You get to ride a dragon :)
The drake warden is the beast master but actually better and it actually wants me to give the ranger a try now just because you get a fricking dragon mount
great Vid thanks
I'm actually a Deathwarden, a homebrew subclass very closely based on Drakewarden, to the point that it's _almost_ just a reflavour. Because it was originally intended to be a reflavour, but changing the creature type of the drake is mechanically relevant so some changes had to be made.
Look, I wanted my little kobold Ranger to be undeath-themed and the mechanics of Drakewarden appealed to me.
Oh yeah, the "drake" is an "undead abomination", an amalgamation of souls that crawled out of the pits of the nine hells and/or the abyss and melded together. They have multiple forms based on their elemental essence, but the most common choice is a creepy skull beetle thing with a necrotic essence. It's really cute and loves head scritchies.
Two-Weapon Fighting is completely worthless to a Drakewarden, you need your Bonus Action to command your Drake!
That honestly sound sick as hell.
I like the Drakewarden but if you really want to be a dragon-riding warrior... just play a Bladesinger Wizard. You've still got magic, you can use a sword or a bow and fight from the dragon's back. How? By casting the Summon Draconic Spirit spell. It's always Large with a flying speed so you can ride it, it can share a resistance with you, and it can attack up to 4 times plus a breath attack. That breath attack doesn't scale at all for some reason, but even as a 5th level summon, it's lowest damage per turn is 22. With a 9th level spell slot, the lowest damage it can output is 58. Sure, the 10d6 breath attack is badass, but a Draconic Spirit does nearly as much damage at minimum every turn that the Drake's best attack does at maximum once per long rest. And it doesn't have to be a Bladesinger. The spell is also found on the Druid and Sorcerer list for your Wildfire Druids and Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers, plus the Bard can pick it up with magical secrets. Sadly yes, you get most of your damage from the Rend instead of the Breath Attack, but the numbers don't lie. A full caster with a draconic spirit does more damage than a Drake Companion. A level 20 Drakewarden Drake Companion's lowest damage is 9 with a bite, and 10 with a breath attack, and it can't do either multiple times per turn. If you really want a dragon, just pick up the spell. I really wish the Drake Companion was the better option, but it's not.
Protip: If you play a Small race, you can ride Medium summons. You can ride a ghost with Summon Undead. Or a beholderkin with Summon Aberration.
I love the Drakewarden, but part of me wonders if it could be stronger. Because for most of the campaign, you're just waiting for that level 15 point. Like, when I think about playing a Drakewarden, my first question is always: are we going to reach level 15? I kind of wish it was stronger at lower levels to make it just a little more interesting up until that point. But the Drakewarden and the Fey Wanderer are the only ranger subclasses I have actually been excited to play, and wanted to use in a proper campaign.
Agreed if all you wanted was to ride a dragon get Summon Draconic Spirit and you can get that as low as level 9. But the Drakewarden can use summon spells and the ever changing dragon to have a very flexible play style as you grow. It start off as a mid to front liner running interference. Then as it grows you can use it to kite the enemy as they attack or do things like run a summon with the drake or have the drake fly and pull enemies over spiked growth. And then at 15 level you can ride it and literally be death from above as you shoot down at the enemy.
It could be and should be a slight bit better but it was the first actual flying pet possibly after the Paladin superior steed so they were way conservative.
ERAGON MENTIONED WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The eragon series is actually called the inheritance cycle
I was a fan of dragons before the author of Eragon was even born.
should 100000% percent be a version of this that uses magic
You know Rangers are half casters, right?
@@theuncalledfor aware, but I mean something more akin to Evan from Maplestory.
with all the pokemons memes the drake mention and the ranger hate I really thought this video was 6 years+ old rather than 6 months old.
Played a drakewarden before and loved it but the campaign didn’t get too much further than level 6 (sadly). But! Recently I have taken to creating a new one for my new tyranny of dragons campaign because it felt thematic. Should be fun!
Playing a new drakewarden again, this time in Tyranny of Dragons. I designed mine to resemble a copper dragon and am having fun with the roleplay potential of it. My funniest moment is when I leveled up to level 7 when going through a teleportation circle. The small drake was on my character’s shoulder. Uh, sooo…small to medium while on my character’s back. I think you can imagine what happened to my ranger. Lol, luckily no damage, just a very confused dragon on my character’s back who is face down in the dirt.
My idea is a reborn ranger having the Drake look like the Nazgûl fell beast. Live your dream of raising your own 🥰
Or Durnehviir if that’s your persuasion.
THis video drop 20 minute before I discover this channel and Drake Warden my favourite class
I am currently playing a ranger who will become a Drakewarden and for flavor my Drake is with me but is too small to fight yet.
I feel like after this we need that one paladin subclass that rides dragons
Edit: i apparently never realized this was homebrew lol, i remembered seeing it in a short and never considered the fact i never saw anyone else talk about it. Oop.
Still waiting for them to care enough about Krynn to give us a Huma expy class.
The implication that the Eragon BOOKS weren't also a travesty is troubling...
