Hey! Guess what. You're Awesome and thanks for watching. I promise this is the best DND tutorial based on a 30 year old Jeff Foxworthy joke you'll ever see. Stick around for more and vote in the comments for which subclass you'd like to next.
Gloom Stalker, more like your DOOM Stalker. Ok honestly not my best but I'm tired. Seriously though I need to find a game to play this sub cuz its really incredible. Pray for the DMs that have to try to balance a game with the Gloom Stalker cuz... its gonna be a rough one. Have fun!

Gloom Stalker: “I am the Lorax! And I speak for the trees! Come any closer, and I’ll break your fucking knees!”
no trees will be harmed while the lorax is armed
Imagine the power couple of a twilight cleric and a gloomstalker raining hasted arrows from a shadow
That's absolutely terryfing. I love it
I'm actually starting a campaign next week as a gloomstalker with a twilight cleric in the party. I'm excited :)
@@007narufan Oh my God, that's awesome. I hope you have a lot of fun making your DM cry
As a gloomstalker player who plays with a twilight cleric and uses Nature’s Mantle, remember that dim light is partial obscurement. Within Twilight Sanctuary, you can Hide anywhere. (This also works for wood elf rogues if your DM counts dim light as natural phenomena)
I am planning a gloomstalker (5)/twilight cleric (x) for a campaign I have coming up soon, honestly so excited for it!
I actually made a Gloomstalker before I heard about how good it was. My brother was running a homebrewed mega dungeon (ACTUAL dungeon, caves and the like), and we started at level one. My original plan was horizon walker, but I spoke to him about what we were doing in the dark and with me playing scout, gloomstalker felt like a better fit. He agreed and I took the subclass.
My favorite moment was when he clarified the "invisibility to darkvision" was continuous and needed no activation or caveats. So, when I entered a dark room full of garbage only to find three "apparently humans" rummaging around without light sources, I guessed (correctly) wererats. I approached quietly so they wouldn't know I was there, then stood ten feet from them and spoke to them directly. Left an implied threat in the air, told them they would not bother myself or my party and we wouldn't bother them. They agreed out of fear, and I went back to lead the party through the room while they cowered in the corner. We were only level 3 at the time. It was so much fun. 10/10, would play this subclass again.
Imagine being those wererats
Just minding your business when suddenly behind you you hear "don't start shit, there won't be shit"
Yeah they were probably smart not to start shit lol
gloomstalker+crossbow expert+hand crossbows+sharpshooter=dm taking you aside to explain that you need to let your other party members fight from time to time
My wife made a GS Ranger/Assassin build for a Curse of Strahd game. She became the Boogey Man to the Undead! She hunted them in the places they felt most secure and nearly took out Strahd by herself!
There are things that go bump in the night, she's the one who bumps back.
Yah this is the build that people who look at how to be good in D&D combat, especially ranged, come up with either through study or recommendation... it's insanely good. You even get some spells from being a Ranger... so you don't have to go all fighter/feat-heavy or something to try to balance the fact spellcasters generally are more powerful/fun than martials!
@@nicksavelle9493 So, Batman?
@@nicksavelle9493ah, quoting Professor Broom. I see you too are a person of culture
I could imagine being a bug bear with that build to hit for even more ambush damage, or a Half orc so that the Critical hit from Assasinate hits an extra damage dice harder.
I always thought Ranger was a flawed but very enjoyable class pre-Tasha's. After Tasha's I would call a solidly fun class, and Gloomstalker really ups it. It's so much fun.
Ranger is flawed but when they work, they work
The most flawed thing about Ranger are Hunters Mark and Features before Tasha, Non Hunters Mark Spells and Tasha Features tho? They work WONDERFUL with Ranger Playstyle
Gloomstalker looks like something out of a horror movie: Invisible terror, elusive hunter.
The "unseen killer" thing sounds a bit like rogue, too... I'm surprised base rogue also doesn't get some invisibility.
Basically lets you play as Predator
Now I want to try an Echo Knight-Gloom Stalker...
I wonder if you could sprinkle in 3 levels of Hexblade warlock, or possibly Assassin rogue?
The Skulker feat I think a lot of people forget about actually pairs extremely well with Gloom Stalker Ranger.
Really? Pear? The fruit? As opposed to pair?

I love the reference to Liam Willhemenia, the True War Guy.
I'm playing a gloomstalker in tomb of annihilation - I think there, any ranger would be good (even if just for the fact we don't get lost in favourite terrain) but the gloomstalker is just crazy. So many things will attack you at night which is where this class really shines...or, more precisely, where it disappears.
The only improvement I'd make to Gloomstalker is to allow the extra attack from Dread Ambusher once per combat instead of making it mandatory on the first turn. Sometimes there are other things I might want to do Turn 1 other than Attack, but the opportunity cost is too high.
These get better every time. Arigato Sofa-chun
I gotta play this sub one day. You think Oren has a long lost son somewhere out there?
I've got a Loxodon Gloom Stalker build in DND Beyond, that I am looking to be the Elephant in the room that no one knows about, for all the reasons you stated in your video. Thank you.
I'd like to bring up the fact that the ranger class itself is more of a jack-of-all-trades. It's just that people don't know how to play it, this is a result of them thinking automatically of Legolas the elf instead of Aragon the Ranger. Legolas is supposed to be the titular version of the elf.
My first experience with Ranger was my second ever time playing D&D, and it was Gloom Stalker as my first tried out Subclass, you better believe that I wanted to see this one.
it is genuinely unbelievable how good your content is. I got your first ever video and though youtube was glitched. been subscribed ever since. Im sure you already have an awesome video plan but Ive never really seen alot of love for my favourite subclass. Astral self monk! would love a video on them. Keep working dude!!!
So here's the problem with "rAnGeR iS bAd" memes: bad features don't make class worse if you're not forced to use them. You can effectively ignore favoured terrain and enemy - which yeah, are pretty trash, but they don't make other features the ranger gets any worse.
Rangers get some of druid's greatest hits on top of your basic martial kit of fighting style and extra attack. No really, at level 5 compared to fighter you trade action surge and second wind for half-casting. If you go TCE, which you should, you also get expertise, 2 free rituals and foe slayer (though that one is minor, it doesn't consume your bonus action like Hunter's Mark does.) They might be no paladins or full casters - and they don't transition into tier 3 very well on their own (which is a shared problem), but ranger gets a pretty good package.
So impressed by the quality of video everytime you drop a new one.
Genuinely surprised he never mentioned Swift Quiver. Say you're able to sneak up on a target (and let's be honest you were able to sneak up on a target with Umbral Sight, Greater Invisibility and expertise in stealth from Canny) you can cast Swift Quiver before a fight for a quite frankly absurd 5 attacks in the first round of combat. 8 If you dipped 2 levels in Fighter for Action Surge. And if you have an ally with Haste? 9 attacks on the first round of combat, all with advantage thanks to Umbral Sight, two of which with extra damage from Dread Ambusher and all able to have Sharpshooter damage added on.
A Gloomstalker Ranger makes a strong contender for the best 'one rounding the BBEG and making a massive anticlimax' character in the game
A few wrong thing here
Haste is Suboptimal, Bless actually does way more than Haste both in early and late game
And Swift Quiver is good but idk some lower level Spells like Conjure Animals is better but hey, it and Lightning Arrow are good spells no one use
You are right on Ranger being a really good Tank Melter tho, because unlike Paladin who need to waste resources, Barbarian and Monk who risk at being in Melee ESPECIALLY the Monk
Gloomstalker is just, best Martial class period, theres no competition
And you can even ditch Hunters Mark for Goodberry which other than being broken in Survival game unless you want to roleplay, its also a really good healing spell alongside Aid
Also dont use Greater Invisibility, you litteraly have Fog Cloud and Pass Without Trace
@@RenoKyrie There is only one good Haste - twinned Haste.
@@notsochosenone5669Why would you waste Sorcery Points on Haste tho?
When you can have much better thing to Cast
Thats like saying "I cast Hunters Mark" only to Grapple them
No way I was gonna miss this! So good my dude! Your audience is WELL satisfied
“I’m not an astronomist.”
I lol’d.
Feywanderer is another one that is kinda strong by its own, you can pick druidic warrior with shilleilagh and magic stone and use medium armor+shield with a club and make a full/only wisdom character, for travel, fighting and interaction, and the spells are awesone, for rolepkay, you can be soneone from wonderland who dont understand the world and would be funny
lol I actually play a variation on red riding hood for my fey wanderer. She has a sled dog companion (I was a later addition so dm allowed this given the group already owned a donkey) which uses the wolf stat block and is chased by a mysterious shadowy canine shape think that followed her out of the feywild. She fell into the feywild as a child though which is what I explain as “the woods” for her.
Hey! I made a comment on how I think Ranger is overhated last time and definitely am glad to see Gloomstalker getting love as the obviously best Ranger here. But I think base Ranger (With the optional features) is still a lot better than given credit for. First of all I actually think Hunter's Mark is a huge trap. Rangers are starved for bonus actions and they will need to reuse this bonus action anytime an enemy dies, you get more damage out of favoured foe and crossbow expert. Even if you don't take Crossbow Expert your Concentration is also highly contested as a Ranger and is best used on something like Conjure Animals, Spike Growth, or Plant Growth. Even at first level I would argue your slots are better used Goodberry, Fog Cloud, Zephyr Strike, or Absorb Elements. The problem with Hunter's Mark is that it isn't 'something to do with your bonus action' but rather that it's actively taking away from better options.
Favoured Foe, Deft Explorer, and Primal Awareness are all big upgrades over their original incarnations. Favoured Foe does use concentration but you can just apply it and get the damage right out the gate without burning your bonus action, and Primal Awareness are all really good exploration spells that really help in a pinch and access useful information. Deft Explorer is just a series of super useful buffs, nothing to really explain and you went over it well in the video, What I like to think of it like is that the original Ranger features were all about bringing your best to nature, while revised ranger is about bringing the best of nature with you. While not as good as Gloomstalker, Drakewarden and Fey Wanderer are good contenders for your Ranger subclass.
also, my obligatory 'can't wait for Rune Knight' here.
Love your approach to these topics -- and yeah, gloomstalkers are awesome -- top 5 subclasses in my book!
Gloomstalker is the best subclass hands down, but the most fun one at least for me was fey wanderer as a skirmisher teleport to get in and out of fights, plus psychic damage it was so cool.
Love this subclass so much!! I'm really hoping to play a full Gloomstalker someday. I'm currently playing a multiclasses Gloomstalker with oath of vengeance paladin for a Curse of Strahd game and I love that character to death. The only problem is that we end the game at level 10 so I know I won't get to experience the full fun of the Gloomstalker part of my character. So I hope one day I'll play a full campaign as a Gloomstalker cause let me tell you, it might be my favorite subclass in all of DnD!!
Ngl content creators really need to stop calling ranger bad after the Tasha’s features. It’s not even close to the bottom half of classes if you use those and the stereotype is just old and propagating misinformation to newer players these days.
The optional features from Tasha"s were a decent start at improving the class but even then it still has problems. For one, unlike every other class, the optional features replace existing features instead of simply being added to the class. Second, Favored For, the Hunter's Mark alternative, is both weaker less applicable and still requires concentration despite being a class feature and not a spell.
Beyond that, their spell options aren't exactly flexible for varying playstyles. It focuses on ranged weapons for combat, not much for melee and very limited in terms of support options. Ranger isn't the worst class out there but between it and the monk, it's foundation is shaky
@@nojusticenetwork9309 Ranger is still fighter, but with spells on top. You have rogue, monk and barbarian - and all three of them are worse than ranger, especially after tasha's. Two lackluster ribbon features don't make class worse.
@@nojusticenetwork9309>Spells are not Flexible

Also i would reccomend Pack Tactics if you want to see his VERY indepth guide to Ranger
How Hunters Mark is garbage, how actually good Ranger spells are, and how Rangers Feature can actually work fine even if some of them are weak
He even made a video how Hunter and Beast Master is WAY better than Horizon Walker and Monster Hunter
True. Me as a new Player if i hadnt sawn this video i wouldve never thought to make a Ranger ever
My favorite ranger class by far
1:01 did you just miss a dragon and hit a rabbit?
If that was an accident, that's hilarious. If it was intentional, that's the biggest flex I have seen yet.
another 10/10 video you never miss
Dude I love your videos Keep the great work
Great video! Currently playing a Gloomstalker in my weekly online game on Fantasy Grounds.
This might’ve been the greatest explanation dnd video I’ve ever watched
Fey wanderer I find has also been great for a more political circles oriented campaign. I also use drakewarden in another campaign but this works because it’s a small party and having another attacking “person” works out pretty good, especially when I want to keep to the back with the longbow. Also is just cute roleplay with the dragon who is slowing but surely getting growth spurts. I will say, I do love the gloomstalker and do play one in my Icewind Dale campaign. But I’ve also played the other two since I’m a ranger main. I usually ask a lot of questions about the campaign because you are right, rangers are very specific to the campaign they are in. The ones I picked are good for the campaign they are part of but I do tailor them heavily with input from the dm and with the party makeup in mind. Having that suddenly change, which it has before, was a huge curve ball for me to learn to adjust to. I had to change up a lot of my play style because of it.
Dude you're hands down one of the best UA-camrs, deff a hidden gem reaching the spotlight here
I love this series. Can’t wait for the next video.
bro where do this guy apeard from?? like the frist video of his chanel is a fuk**n masterpiece of editing
you can cure exhaustion on a short rest rather then a long rest...
so... you literally never have to sleep when your party does you just manage on a 10 minute power nap.
that is fucking stupid and I love it.
you still have to do long rests to get spells or abilities back, but you can basically take every single watch, and put an end to THAT INANE CONVERSATION that happens at every long rest.
no joke, I think that is my favorite feature of the bunch.
permanent invisibility in the dark is pretty good.
but being able to put an end to the "whose got first watch?" conversation instantaneously? That is worth a million permanent invisibilities.
i have also given the entertainer background to my gloom stalker. hes basically one of those punk rock eco-terrorists.
Hey, can you make a you might be a Archfey warlock or fey wanderer ranger? The two are one of my most loved.
New dnd player here, and I gotta say I love your videos man. Thanks for the fun and informative videos 🍻
Good video, hello from Turkey!
Crossbow Expert!
Here's an interesting and strong low level party build I have in a game where it's just the DM and me with two characters
- Blood Hunter (currently level 2) variant human with 16 Dex that will take the Mutant Order with Archery Fighting Style and Crossbow Expert
- Artificer applies Repeating Weapon to the Blood Hunter's Hand Crossbow - I believe this also means they can use a Shield while still making 2 attacks per round
- At level 2 (when you get Crimson Rite), that's two attacks per round with +7 to hit and 1d6+4+1d4
- At level 3, Mutant Order for the + max Dex mutagen - +1 attack and damage with both attacks, +1 AC
- At level 4, Piercer feat for +1 Dex, another +1 attack and damage with both attacks, +1 AC and the reroll bonuses
- At level 5, Extra Attack and the Hemocraft die goes up - 3 attacks per round with +10 to hit and d6+7+d6 damage, 20 AC with studded leather and a shield
- Add some Goggles of Night if you need them as you don't have Darkvision
The most captivating way to ever speak about a ranger: the Gloom Stalker decided to take the ranger class in a completely unheard direction by making it.. um.. good.
The Gloom Stalker subclass makes me accept all ranger propaganda :D
okay tbh when i make rangers i like to take favored enemy (the old feature) and pair it with deft explorer (the new feature). the additional d4 of damage is... nice but advantage on tracking a specific enemy is fun for flavor as well as useful depending on the campaign - you can also specifically pick humanoids to get around the pesky 'situational' problem.
Don't you have to choose 2 specific races if you choose humanoids?
But heres the thing
You allready going to have a lot of advantage to begin with
Favored Foe also only cost its own resource being equal to your PB, its just part of your attack and not a Bonus Action
Sure you wont be a good Spread damager, but you will probably be the guy who instantly murder the biggest threat in the room with just 2 Attacks, 3 if we are using Gloomstalker since they somehow just do more attacks than the other Martials
The combo of Hexlock, Paladin, and Gloomstalker is terrifying.
Personally I like augmenting this with a level 1 dip into twilight cleric. Advantage on initiative, mega darkvision and nice bonus spells are really powerful with a stealth archer like this.
Love the content! Thanks for the video.
Favored Foe is better than Hunter's Mark. It doesn't cost a spell slot and it doesn't cost a bonus action. Sure it does less damage, but it does damage earlier, assuming you're making use of your bonus action to attack. And why wouldn't you?
I mean, if you're not a vhuman, I guess there's a case that Hunter's Mark might be better before you can get your first Feat and pick up Crossbow Expert.
I personally think Favored Foe synergize the most with Gloomstalker since while they dont have the best spread damage they do have the best first turn Nova Damage, and Favored Foe is resourceless AND you can ditch Hunters Mark for something better
Like idk, SHUTDOWN SPELLS AND UTILITY
Am I the only one thinking about a gloom stalker Batman character who fights with throwing knives and disappears before your eyes when you blink.
So far with 3 levels of fighter and 2 levels of ranger, my character literally said "you know metal arrow heads are about the same as one and a half musket balls or something like that" and then pulls out a Kalthoff Repeater because I'm gonna fight some bears like Leonardo Dicaprio as Hugh Glass
Played Curse of Strahd as a Gloomstalker Ranger and he was a total badass. If a Rogue is like a ninja assassin then my dwarf was a military scout sniper. In the final battle I rolled a nat20 and he decapitated Strahd.
you've been giving me excellent enemy ideas for my players to face. nice.
*Looks at hands*: I might be a gloomstalker.
Rangers got so much better! If only monks got half as much love...
Btw a Scrubs AND Runesmith reference?!
If I had more than but 1 like to give....
Imagine a Gloomstalker who takes eldritch adept for devil sight paired with a hexblade
Gloomstalker is still campaign dependent since it requires darkness, which isn't always heavily utilized.
Thumbsnail: guy with a sword and a bow
15s later: "go with thy bow"
As a newbie DM with a newbie party, this channel is pure gold! :D
I'll make sure to show them what subclasses they can delve into after 3rd lvl. We're following the XP system, so this'll give us plenty of time to check out the classes they'd like to play and the ways I can assimilate them in our campaign :3
Okay, hear me out, Gloomstalker Ranger cross classed with Kensai Monk choos crossbow as your kensai weapon
And now you also know why I was so on for this particular subclass. You combine this badass mofo with your arcane trickster and moon druid and MAYBE you get a fighter or wizard and your dm is gonna shit themselves and don't be so evil as to make your race DROW cuz this is BROKEN
Can't wait for Grave Cleric, Divine Soul, and Necromancy Wizard. Eventually. Some day.
great vid as always^^ maybe as a suggestion, how about shadow/kensei/open hand monk next? just interested in seeing you trying to make the weakest class in the game look goodXD
Great video, very educational and entertaining. 3 thumbs up.
I literally just watched a crown of candy. The "you're a war guy now" killed me
The gloomstalker is not edgy, it's ereganto
Well damn this is great. I think I will play this the next time o play Ranger. And I will be taking your advice and dipping into Rogue with this but probably Thief instead of Assassin to make my sneaky boy extra sneaky. Either way this subclass rules and so does your video
GS with Champion is not to be overlooked, as well. Wanna do those swarms of attacks... with a 10% chance to crit every one of them? Add in some Assassin and just be the DPS of the party that makes your Barbarian jealous.
Very nice. Number I don't know asking for Valour bard.
Always love to see a John Waters reference in the wild
Great video, I can tell you put a lot of work into editing your videos. You deserve more subscribers.
The problem with Ranger was the forced hyper specialized elements of it at first and the design limitations they put on it and that is why this one could beat that. The Gloomstalker was about night attack. Not forcing you to be okay in one situation but one that happens all the time!
(Truth is that the Ranger is a support fighter. They never were meant to be the main fighter or caster but meant to be the person that supports others. Goes into the camp so the rogue has back up. Fight along side the warrior so they can’t be flanked. That kind of thing. They just did not go all the way with it and should have. )
Gloomstalker doesnt even need to be in Darkness to proc Umbral Sight making them usefull unlike most other Ranger
They get more Attacks in turn 1 while also allways get higher initiative is allready enough to boost Rangers toolkit
Throw away that garbage Hunters Mark, Favored Foe is litteraly better in the Short amount of time you use it and use better Spells like
Entangle, Goodberry, Spike Growth, PASS WITHOUT TRACE the Party Spell that makes Greater Invisibility look like a clown, and Conjure Animals
Sure you arent a Sorcerer, Wizard, Cleric, or Druid but Rangers are equally as strong as Paladin Half Casting, people just keep playing Ranger wrong
The only genuinely trash Subclass is Horizon Walker and Monster Slayer
i am playing a living weapon monk goliath (custom origins) with the weretouched martial discipline whose whole deal is "i fight like a feral beast because i wanna be at the top of the food chain" and i'm having a really hard time deciding if continue full monk up to lvl 10 (our max lvl for this campaign) or dip 2 or 3 lvls into battle masters for the "the most dangeorous beasts know how to pin down, intimidate or where to attack their prey", or 3 lvls into gloomstalker because "the most dangerous predators are the ones who know how to hunt in the darkness", and being honest i'm highly inclining into gloom stalker, is just THAT GOOD.
Im a Twilight DomainCleric in a campaign with a Divination Wizard a Totem barbarian a Rune Fighter and a Gloomstalker Ranger/Rogue and it's like the Gloomstalker/Rogue is 10 levels above us. He does stupid amount of damage and I don't think he got hit once by a single attack. Whe had to fight a warewolf cult and he killed the boss of the cult in his second turn.the boss had like 200hp and becouse of that our DM needs to crank the hp of monsters to max. Whe are lv 11 now maiby when whe level up whe should all multiclass into a Gloomstalker
obligatory comment to help you with the algorithm because i enjoy these videos
1:15 ayoooo my boy wickedwind
A fun party could be a gloomstalker ranger, a twilight cleric, a shadow magic sorcerer, and way of shadow monk.
Obeying the almighty algorithm. Great video. The Gloom Stalker is a best of a class. I think it might be the best build you could make in Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign.
4:42 hahaha, classic plant joke.
I don't know yet how I'll make that work, but imagine some burglars in a dark alley surrounding the party, when suddenly out of nowhere, a dark hooded person emerges from the shadows, just to smash one burglars head with a pickaxe just to disappear again. You don't need intimidation if you are intimidation.
this is what happens when a D&D designer looks at the Demon Hunter from Diablo and says "bet"
also Batman
First character was a ranger, and everything he did didnt matter because we just glossed over pretty much everything that has to do with being alive, like eating, drinking water, staying warm in the icewind dale etc.. I even compiled a list of edible/poisonous plants and mushrooms that i could find that matched the setting because they where all native to Alaska. Didnt get to do any of that.
I've effectively used Gloomstalker to become Ravenguard in a friends campaign.
It's absolutely hilarious.
3 Level's Of Ranger/Gloomer
& 17 Level's Of Wizard/Bladesinger,
Shoot, Move, Communicate...
If you play your Gloom Stalker right, it is an endless arms race between you and your DM. And you don't even have to do the normal cheeses like crossbow master or even sharpshooter (though, you should.) Gloomstalker 5 / Twilight Cleric X , is an excellent path to go. You get all the best parts of Gloom Stalker, then get to make it even better. Plus, at higher levels of Cleric, you get to slightly keep up with full casters in your party, while having a pretty good fallback plan for when you run out of spell slots. But being able to keep being the scout/skirmishierr/UMBRAL AMBUSH GO BBBBRRRRRR.
Gloom Stalker also is a great melee character when you grab GS3/Eldritch Knight 5+, and take Blindsight. Because now things are stuck in melee with you, most likely with disadvantage unless it has blindsight, and if it is not dark enough for Umbral Sight bullshit, you can make blindsight fun with Fog. And also eventually get other fun things like Haste. And Ritual Detect Magic, and Summon Familiar. Also really annoys the fuck out of DMs when their invisible creatures can't run around willy nilly. Because you can get a BAT Familiar with its 60ft of blindsight and just ask your bat "were be thy annoyance in my life?".
My wife chose this for our homebrew and decimated every encounter I threw at the party. She also out classed our barbarian in ways that made him rethink his existence.
Ur videos always make me laugh so hard :>
I played a GS 5, War Cleric 1, Rogue 2, and I have never been happier. I'll probably dump the rest of the last two levels of Curse of Strahd into Rogue
Don't forget the potions of speed you brewed up for 4 attacks at level 3, and 5 at level 5.
Your videos continue to entertain
I'm curious as to where you get the little character art profiles done, it looks awesome!
I had to pause to say, Pesci, followed by Dean Pelton, earned you a like and sub right off the bat!
Are you afraid of clowns? How about a shadow clown with a gun? Does that make the back of your short heavy? Because it f&@kin should!😂😂😂
oooh look, video interaction
Your videos have a +4 to making me chuckle. Heh heh heh
Food for the algorithm! Lest we get ambushed in the night by stealth Archer Batman- I mean a gloom stalker.
I mean, it sounds like my arcane trickster, but instead of sneak attack it's extra attacks, specially after the dm allowed me to turn shadow blade into shadow weapon and make a bow with it (shadowfell tattoo and clokcwork amulet)
I'm somewhat of a Goon-sessering myslef
If you want another great class for ranger with a lot of flavor potential go Drake Warden Ranger, make a small character, I picked a kobold, and then start stating into things that make spears op for you such as sentinel. At level 5 because you are small, you can start riding your Drake. Take Knight of the order background for even more flavor and take my Drake Wardens clan as inspiration where they only study dragons never kill unless they absolutely must to help drive your campaign and not to mention the ranger. It's great reasoning to be running around. Even more flavor take Spellcasting at level 2 because the dragons give you power and your natural explorer is mountains because dragons. The theme is fun, the class is a blast to play, personally being a kobold was hilarious fun. You can shoot your bow from atop your mount, get the high ground on people, plus your melee is buffed by the fact that you are riding a Drake. At like level 11 the dude can fly but by that point you are just having a blast. If you have trouble with early game stuff try to pick an early game enemy for your favored enemy like Humanoids and Goblins or something.
