  • Sultans of Swing is a Dire Straits song written by guitarist and singer Mark Knopfler. It was released as a single in May 1978 and then re-released in January 1979.
It was Dire Straits' debut single and is also one of their best-known songs, thanks to Mark Knopfler's ingenious fills and solos that mix virtuosity and technique in his fingerpicking (which takes you back to Bluegrass). It was immediately appreciated by critics, and quickly reached the top of the charts. The peculiarity for which he liked the most was certainly the final solo, containing a very fast part, placed in a strategic position to compensate for the apparent monotony of the entire song.
The classic guitar response to the voice (fill) is a Knopfler peculiarity, as are the clean timbres.
The story depicted in the song is that of a jazz group, the Sultans of swing, made up of London employees who think only of their music with no interest in popularity - they only perform in a small London club. The text paints various scenes that can be seen in the room: two particularly significant members of the group busy playing, some boys dressed in fashion who are absolutely not interested in music and the man who, at the end of the evening, dismisses the audience.
The single was originally released in May 1978, but failed to be very successful at the time. It was later redistributed in January 1979, entering the charts around the world. The song reached eighth on the Official Singles Chart and fourth on the Billboard Hot 100, allowing the group's debut album to stay on the charts for over a year.
