      This is the balanced sweet spot because they gave up just a tiny bit of corrosion resistance to keep it on par with S20V in edge retention and with 4V or Nitro-V in toughness.

      I’m setting up the 1% salt fog corrosion test as we speak. Recommend you don’t scratch the knife in the meantime, just in case you’d want to return it after the video comes out. I’m not worried about the blade rusting it’s the hardware made of various metals and the associated galvanic corrosion that worry me.

    Full transparency. I pre-ordered the Mini Adira. I sweat like a mad man and enjoy bringing a knife with me on the boat so corrosion resistance is a must.
    That being said, the box is a bit much. Out of every knife I own, I've probably only kept 2 boxes just in case I wanted to sell them later. I've thrown every other knife box and cleaning towel out.
    I plan on comparing this knife with the Magnacut Spyderco Paramilitary 2, and the Magnacut Cold Steel Recon M1 when they drop.

    If these are just the regular omega spring steel I would not trust them at all in or near saltwater, no matter how polished the finish is. Every omega spring I’ve had break was due to moisture from humidity simply causing rust and eventual cracking. Also none of them had ever been near saltwater or even wet/submerged. Hopefully they went with extremely corrosion resistant components and parts on these but I again just wouldn’t trust these knives over something like Spyderco’s salt knives.
    I feel like Benchmade could have really made a great blue class water series with these but it seems like they went way “overboard” with the packaging/marketing to help explain why these knives are so much more expensive than a regular blue class knife. Unfortunately in turn it significantly increased the price making them further out of reach for those who might buy a blue class knife.

      Not a single one of your statements is entirely correct nor are they incorrect. Please read this article by Dr. Larin Thomas and then you should be able to separate Neeves opinion on what hardness a pocket folder should be from the multi-dimensional reality of metallurgy. Actually Neeves understands this very well and actually has repeatedly stated that his preference is for small to mid sized folders.

    As for me - I would prefer Benchmade with full steel liners or with metal handle. Construction of these looks not sonbad for small, but for large model - doubtful.
    And thanks for hardness test - it is very useful and Benchmade keeps level, it seems. But I didn't understand this changes of hardness from 60 to 66. Do you have some thoughts about this difference?

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  4 місяці тому +1

      That’s how the hardness tests are always done. I only have two blades and so I hit them 3 times and got the average. Large manufacturers test a sample of 3-5 blades in a batch of 100-150 blades and take an average - there’s an industrial sampling spec for that.

    Excellent review, thank you! How confident are you with the Hardness tester, did you ever crossreference it? I am interested in buying one. But all manufacturers say the tested material has to be of a certain mass / thickness (mostly 1kg or 0.5") which is a lot more than typical knife blades. Does the block do the trick enough? How does the coating/surface influence the hardness reading?

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  4 місяці тому +1

      I am promising to myself to make a video covering these topics. Bottom line it’s as accurate as an older dial indicator free standing tester and slightly less accurate than the digital hardness tester.
      Placing the sample on the block is the key, it requires some practice and about the same level of control as shooting a precision rifle in thousand-yard match.

  • @KingKsEDC
    @KingKsEDC 3 місяці тому

    Reason why I love Spyderco is they think of EVERYTHING including something as innocent as coating on some hardware. When creating their Salt series Spyderco tested everything inlcuding all hardware. They took 3 years testing out which screws would be the most corrosion resistant. I love that about then. But I dont feel that way at all about Benchmade. Case in point...coating on the spring.

      @@CuttingBoardRx I don’t want to see your brand new knife rust, but for science, I think you should test the noble (non reactive) properties of the Magnacut steel used in the Adira. I really enjoy your approach to the knife hobby/community and have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you

      I did that to a brand new Narrows a year ago, almost to the date. So why not this one?
      BTW, galvanically-induced corrosion was pretty bad between all the different metals. But the solution I used was acidic, this time I will go with 1% salt fog.

    Stay with you assessment of the knives, you're great at that, not at marketing or sales and packaging, that's a different skill set. Apple has become the biggest company in the world using better packaging, then other companies have followed simply because it works. The first impression can not be changed and the box and packaging is the first impression as to the look, quality and how the product make them feel. Just because you think it's a waste of money just means you are not in your lane as the big picture of retail is not just about the product it's self. It's also about how that product is presented to be sold.
    Why do you think a dentist office or lawyers office uses a young pretty girl at the front desk that probably can do anything except great you and answer the phone, it's because that first impression is a positive one and that counts a lot in making sales. It's done all over the world in businesses that want success. Because looks and first impressions are very important to people.
