  • Terry Laughlin passed away from cancer complications on October 20, 2017, just two weeks after I recorded an interview with him for my podcast.
Terry was the founder of Total Immersion Swimming and co-author of Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier. He had a profound impact on me-teaching me to overcome a lifelong fear of water and swimming. But more than that, he’s been an inspiration for the way I’ve done anything since.
Terry coached three college and two USA Swimming club teams from 1973 to 1988, improving each team dramatically. In that time, he developed 24 national champions at all strokes and distances-the first national champions produced by four different teams.
In 1989, Terry founded Total Immersion Swimming and turned his focus from working with young, accomplished swimmers to adults with little experience or skill (like me). But it’s not just about swimming; Terry’s elegant method of deconstruction and logical progression is the epitome of what I strive to do when I’m talking about learning any skill-from investing to learning languages.
It’s with a heavy heart but much gratitude that I was able to interview Terry before he passed.
Please enjoy, savor, and digest what Terry had to impart. You can find my interview with Terry here: tim.blog/2017/10/29/terry-lau...

This is episode #10 my TV show, The Tim Ferriss Experiment! The show is like MythBusters meets Jason Bourne. In every episode, I partner with the world’s best and most unorthodox teachers (e.g., Laird Hamilton, Marcelo Garcia, Stewart Copeland), who train me for a final gauntlet. Shocking breakthroughs, injuries, epiphanies, and disasters are all part of the journey. Along the way, I show you how to replicate results in an attempt to prove that “you don’t need to be superhuman to get superhuman results… you just need a better toolkit.”
I’ll be releasing all episodes of my TV show, The Tim Ferriss Experiment, on UA-cam- for free. It was a maze to secure the rights, but now it’s done.
Make sure to subscribe to my UA-cam channel to get notified of all upcoming episodes.
    Enjoy!
Tim Ferriss is one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Business People” and an early-stage tech investor/advisor in Uber, Facebook, Twitter, Shopify, Duolingo, Alibaba, and 50+ other companies. He is also the author of five #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers: The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body, The 4-Hour Chef, Tools of Titans and Tribe of Mentors. The Observer and other media have named him “the Oprah of audio” due to the influence of his podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show, which has exceeded 900 million downloads and been selected for “Best of Apple Podcasts” three years running.

Total immersion is the real deal. I was lucky enough to live about 90 minutes from the studio (New Paltz,NY) and learn under some of Terry’s coaches. I had swam as a child, but nothing like I would have to do for half Ironman. With the technical corrections and mindset changes, I went from struggling through 50m across the pool to smashing 1.2miles in the Hudson River 10 months later. Thanks TIS!!!

I am so grateful to have been able to work closely with Terry in the years leading to his untimely passing. Terry was instrumental in my coaching and I am grateful everyday that I can continue to work with swimmers and coaches because of his influence. Thank you for posting this Tim.

I self learned front crawl since 2022(it was my retirement resolution, a task I set out after retiring). It took me a long time to make peace with water, condition my body, and minimize fear. I mainly used swim snorkel before I attempted breathing. I wasn’t following total immersion but by now my style is close to total immersion (pace, body line, and kick rate). I learned to breathe on both sides. It was really hard but eventually I can breathe smoothly every 9/7/5/3 strokes. I practice 4/5 times a week for about 2 years now. I use paddles and fins. From time to time I wear a float belt to jog the lap. I haven’t tried 50 meter pool yet. I am working on my stamina and endurance in a 25 meter pool starting this year.

Seeing this just a few days after I finally gathered the courage to sign up for swimming lessons. Really hope to do well even though it will be standard classes.

It's all about breathing. Your lungs are your floatation device. Keep them full and you will float.

@danielnaberhaus5337 My lungs definitely need training. We've been doing an interesting technique where I swim with above water but continuously blow air into the water to get used to it. Harder than I expected.

Going from being a total beginner swimming in a pool, to swimming half a mile in open water in just 5 days, is no joke.
As a competitive swimmer and swim coach, this was awesome to watch. Sarah kicked ass with this challenge!!

At the last "level of swimming" they showed to us there is absolutely no way she can swim half a mile.
Talking from experience, after 2 years of self-teaching. The building of strength, , cardio-vascular endurance and CO2 tolerance just cannot be done so quickly.
