I have never had mushy peas as I grew up, so I cannot imagine looks nor taste at all.
Are they like mushed potato?
Anything freshly fried seafood is welcomed. Their batter looks crispy, I can almost hear it from your bite.

im not the biggest fan of mushy peas, definitely an English thing. after twenty years of Jill beating me down im thinking mushy peas should be a thing with fish and chips.
personally id go for Curry Sauce as Cara suggested, or a slice of white bread and butter to make a chip buttie.
after honeymooning on the East Coast of America we can both happily agree that any fish options are best served in California.
there is nothing in the UK that can hold a candle to that culinary experience! xx

I've never had root beer despite being to America quite a bit, but I have also never had Dandelion and Burdock! I will have to give it a try. Those fish and chips looked delicious. The 'I wonder what it's like when it's not in bloom?' made me laugh. The poor flower displays are looking a bit bedraggled this summer with all the rain. Absolutely gorgeous place guys, I think you couldn't find a better place to enjoy. Here in Sweden, I have yet to find a place with fish and chips that I liked. Maybe it's destined when I come to England to try real fis and chips! 🤗

three years without Fish and Chips Alistair? thats too long without the national dish! i bet you have some cracking chippies in your neck of the woods. Humber Bridge is starting to become a haunt of ours, we used it to visit Skegness and we are toying with the idea of doing the Wolds Way so have done a bit of recon around the starting segment. we are still surprised its only £1.50 to cross the bridge, in previous years we have driven miles to avoid the toll, never again! D&B is the classic choice, hope you are having an awesome weekend! 👍

Hey both, back from our Greek adventures and catching up on our favourite Gen X’s!!! What a great opening shot of those gulls. Ok, those fish and ships look very good, nice box…plastic fork? Hmm, maybe they should go with wood. 10 out of 10 for a chip, wow and the fish looks amazing!! 60 miles for fish and chips, fair play, they must be good, you should compare them to the Magpie in Whitby. Mmm, dandelion and burdock, love it. Never had root beer? They used to sell it in MacDonalds back in the day!! Nice shout out for Dara and Ian.It does kinda smell and taste of deep heat or Tiger Balm!! Can’t believe you didn’t stop at the 2p falls 😂. That’s a lot of non fish shops. Hornsea doesn’t look the most picturesque place in the world, but we’ve seen worse. Worth a visit for the fish and chips!! Keep out!!! Loved this guys, top work 🍻 x
so excited to see and hear more from your Greek adventure! good spot on the plastic fork, for the leading chip shop that has a strong ethos about sustainability and environment that was a real slip right? i think a chip can easily slide on a 10 scale. its the one thing most chip shops seem to still get consistently wrong. hand cut, locally sourced potato, consistent size chunks, the waiting tray cleaned and emptied between breaks in customers and then cooked once for the exact time to be crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. no bits from a previous serving, no chips reheated! its the most important part for me. think when the price of fish went through the roof a decade or so ago every fish and chip shop learnt that fish needed to be only cooked on order. they couldn’t afford to have a cooked fish waiting to be sold and not getting sold. these are the winners of fish and chip takeaway of the year 2023. a televised event hosted by comedian Jason Manford. it was the lovely Dara that gave us the heads up on the fact that the winner was a reasonably close distance for us to visit! As soon as Jill said it smelt like Deep Heat (it does) that was me done with sampling anymore. she has since took to chasing me around the apartment whenever she has sore muscles and has deep heat on. its her new thing, “root beer, root beer” she will shout! Hornsea? well there is a first time for everything. if only that wonderful fish and chip shop and its staff could be picked up and put almost anywhere else.. hope you had a great time on your hols. we are just in from our first visit to Lincoln. what a lovely place. its currently hosting the Lincoln Asylum so it was absolutely mental there. exhausted now, yours is a great comment to come home too ♥️ 🍻

Ooo yeah, a good classic, fish and chips! Yum! Love that you can put your own condiments on, makes all the difference haha. That fish looked very tasty and chunky chips, beautiful! Love A&W root beer but can understand it's not to everyones taste, i always have either a Cream Soda or Dandelion and Burdock with my fish and chips. Great to see around Hornsea, fab video you two!
oh a cream soda, now thats an inspired choice! I love cream soda and thinking back it does pair very well with fish and chips too. im surprised Jill stopped their with the condiments, she must have been embarrassed that I was filming particularly after chatting to the great staff. Jills ratio of salt to chip is usually 60% salt 40% potato, all swimming in vinegar! That Root Beer was absolutely vile, after Jill said it tasted like Deep Heat I couldn’t possibly try it again! i think if i was to try it again it would have to be a blind taste test challenge with a few brands or versus D&B and Cream Soda! thank you so much for wonderful comment xx

Well you had me drooling over those fish n chips ... looked absolutely scrummy. Have to say I've never been able to bring myself to try mushy peas haha I think it's the texture and aroma so when you stood your fork innit and it stayed up right, that confirmed all my worst fears 😃😃 I have to admit I didn't know where Hornsea was .. had to look it up, so you've educated me this evening. Seemed a long way to go for fish n chips ! My most frequented chippy is the Wetherby Whaler ... always delicious though not sure if it matches up to Whiteheads ... it's 100 miles away 🤣😀 but handy being half way on route to visit my Dad 😁 Shame about the Mere, such a great attribute not being fully utilised (apart from perhaps the wildlife) Those opening shots around the beach looked great and f you got a gorgeous sunny day I'll bet Hornsea would be an attractive destination for a seaside jaunt😎 Hahaha I'm just chuckling to myself as I've just remembered Jilly' s comment about footballers legs 🤣😃🤣
They were good Christine but after the fact we decided we have had better closer to our home town so there maybe future videos! Wetherby Whaler sounds nice will keep that in mind if in that direction! Thanks for another great comment! yes we don’t do football but Jilly’s dad use to take her to his matches when she was younger and says the changing rooms always smelt like it she has since realised it was deep heat but she did put tiger balm on an ache she had just the other day and said smell this and that too took us back to trying this very unusual drink that is root beer 🤣

Love Hornsea if anyone is driving there is Hornsea garden centre which is massive or 5 minute drive there’s mr moos ice cream.
The towns struggled a lot with Covid ect but is recovering
It seems really popular on an evening with the bars and pubs.

A&W is the most famous root beer here! Its usually made with root beer floats. OMG those fish and chips looks so good but I will pass on the peas! I was disappointed you didint push the gate of the day! LOL Awesome video Nick and jill!

You can't pass up the opportunity to show us the best fish and chips. But...... what about the one that was always queued out the door? Whitby, was it? How did it compare to that. I must admit that when the chips are done well, they are great, but a lot of places batch cook a couple of buckets of chips, and then everything normally sits under the warming lights. Another great vlog, Nick & Jill. Thanks for sharing.
oh i hate that Chris, its my pet peeve. recooked chips or chips not made to order. that seems to be the biggest offence committed by chippies. back in the day both the fish and the chips used to be sat under lamps waiting for customers. thankfully every chippy cooks fish when ordered and not before (probably due to the high cost of fish now). sadly whilst Magpie has a long standing great reputation they do cook chips in advance. what you’ll almost certainly get from there is reheated chips. Mr Chips is the place to beat in Whitby, NorthBayFisheries in Scarborough and the 192 in Bridlington. Frankly out of them all id say 192 has the edge even on Whiteheads but the ethos in Whiteheads for sustainability and professionalism makes them the better shop. making me hungry now..
The Fish & Chips looked delicious and such a lovely setting to enjoy them too! At least the mushy peas were on the side. But where's the coleslaw? Worth the 2 1/2 hour road trip! No root beer there? That's a crime! So was throwing it away! It's our favorite soda.

Looks delicious! I am finding all your seaside videos so nostalgic. I had relatives who lived in n.e Lincolnshire and Yorkshire as a kid. So I spent many summers visiting Scarborough, Skegness, Cleethorpes etc. Never been to Hornsea beach but we used to go to the pottery factory.
You should travel up to Scotland some time. Stonehaven does an excellent fish and chips😊

Never had root beer not sure we will bother if it's like deep heat 😆 however love dandelion & burdock that's a taste that brings back childhood memories of the pop man coming round each week. Oo I don't know Hornsea but I love any beach and that looked quite nice though you said to give it a miss it did look quiet when in the amusements ! 😃The fish and chips looked so good and quite a good sized portion. Alf likes mushy peas, I prefer garden ! He he you have definitely put me off root beer though 🤭 but then I don't really like fizzy drinks. ah its really sad Anna. even before the lovely Dara from Magenta Otter Travels clued me in to a fish and chip shop within 60 miles winning a national award i was already limbering up to do a what is there to see in Hornsea video? having not been it was always high on our list.
we are super glad it has the 2023 best fish and chip shop because beyond that it has nothing else.
other than the lovely fish and chips which we had to hurriedly retreat to a 30C car for to avoid the millions of sand flies, Hornsea has massive problems. I couldn’t recommend anyone visiting there!
i think if you grow up with it D&B or Root Beer is a taste you can get onboard with. the local pop man brought D&B to us every friday, i loved it. can understand a similar thing was going on with Root Beer in the States at the same time.
if you grew up with that taste, its probably still acceptable if your pairing with a lovely fat and carb injection of fish and chips! ♥️ 🏴

I can see why they were voted the best of 2023, they looked amazing and a reasonable price too. Not keen on peas or dandelion and burdock and never tasted root beer but by the sound of it, not for me either lol. Despite the brilliant fish n chips, looks like nothing else to attract us to Hornsea, I think we will stick with good old Mr Chips in Whitby (after the schools go back of course). Cheers Alan
thanks Alan. to be fair to them and give credit where it is definitely due, they are 1000% deserving of the award. step back a second, its set in an area notorious with high crime, in our first few minutes there we were not only privy to a few examples of that a lesser couple would have fallen victim to it too. not the greatest of starts.
on the many pluses, the fish and chips were genuinely up there. there was a team of staff so professional they should be on TV constantly, not a word or attitude came out of there mouths that wasn’t professional. their ethos? i felt like id appeared twenty years into a super green, super professional environment where the best fish and chips could be eaten.
WHITEHEADS, HORNSEA, deserve the award for the next twenty years running because thats how long it will take for their number two rival to catch up.
but Hornsea? you’ll never see us again. Mr Chips in Whitby, Northside Fisheries in Scarborough and the amazing 192 in Bridlington will be our go to places. the hassle in Hornsea is more than we will ever suffer again xx

Who doesn't like a good meal of fish & chips? These looked great. Amongst all the 'sustainable and 'local' bits I was surprised to find you got plastic forks with the meal. JUst a minor ting. Here plastic utensils ( amongst many other things plastic) have been banned for a while- and I really loath the wooden replacements for them. Love crunchy batterand flakey fish. I am now sooooooo longing for a decent F&C meal. It will have to wait till I am back in an English environment. The 🇳🇱 don't do F&C well. We do have lovely chips, just not the same. However, I. would strongly advise that you eat your meal in comfort and not on a bloody bench. Plastic forks! The last time I eat a meal with plastic cutlery was in prison. Root beer! thank you so much Micky Grylls! alas Hornsea, not our favourite place by a long mile. will not divulge any of the info here but this was certainly the worst day filming we ever experienced. started off really, really bad,thought we could make the most of it with the fish and chips, after the first bite we had to retreat to the boiling car with all closed windows, the place is infested. after that we wanted to check in with the famous biggest water body in Yorkshire, Hornsea Mere, well good luck with that, we suffered the same fate as every other youtuber, but we did get very scared going up private back alleys riddled with signs full of bullet holes trying to get to it. a day that started with a single policeman trying (AND MASSIVELY FAILING) to arrest a drug dealer outside of the award winning fish and chip shop quickly escalated worse. Lets just end and say even if a lifetimes supply of those fish and chips was on offer we would NEVER, and i mean NEVER, step foot near Hornsea again! bombers.. make that run…. ✈️ ✈️💥💥💥

Hello Bruce and Otis yes they are Chips much thicker or fatter than French fries so more potato in them! you call chips what we call crisps so it becomes very confusing 🤣 you must be the only person from across the pond that has tried mushy peas and so glad they were the best and from a family recipe! oh maybe it was a knock off root beer so might have tasted all wrong, won’t rule it out yet then! They did a puffin trail with those arty puffins but sadly some have been auctioned and sold but some still remain! have a great weekend 👍

Cracking video. poor Horsea. At least it's got good fish and chips. Root beer is definitely an acquired taste. Drink it freezing cold, and quickly, and it's not too bad. Dandelion and burdock is better though.

yeah im not sure getting invited to Parliament anytime this last decade is anything to be happy about, what a long standing mockery it has been. yes the Root Beer was more of a miss for us, especially after Jill rightfully said it smelt and tasted like Deep Heat. she has delighted in rubbing Deep Heat into her aching muscles and chasing me around our abode shouting Root Beer ever since. that smell will haunt me! i can’t believe the biggest body of water in all of Yorkshire is entirely privately owned with little to no access to it. what a waste and a real mess up! hope your having a wonderful weekend guys xx

Had fish and chips from Whiteheads a few times fairly recently and my honest opinion Is they were ok on most of the occasions bar one when the fish was rather strong,other than that they were Ok but nothing to get overly excited about.There were never that many people waiting for them to open and it was relatively quiet on every occasion we visited. Fish and chips rarely consistent In my opinion like the british weather they are changeable.Whiteheads an average seven out of 10 from me sorry! but that's the best i can say.
thats really helpful Steve, yes we only made the effort because it had just won the National Award. if we are being honest we think they were awarded it on their “sustainability ethos”. we arrived at the start of service so everything was cooked to order, a better way to review would have been to rock up a couple of hours later and see if the fish or chips had been left standing and waiting for a customer. to be honest we pefer the 149 in Bridlington which won the award a few years back. they are consistently great and half the travel distance for us. thank you for the honest review its a great to hear from somebody that has been there..
There are many different Root Beer brands on the market. A&W is a classic brand, but it is artificial these days. I prefer A&W’s Cream Soda to their Root Beer these days.
The top brands to look for are: Mug (classic), Bundaberg (fancy), Barq’s (caffeinated).
Don’t write Root Beer off just yet.
Best over a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a large mug and eaten with a spoon.
…and for the record… I actually love mushy peas. Just can’t get em in Kansas City, and can’t even find marrowfat peas to make them at home.

What a great thing for Hornsea to bring in the tourists. Sounds like is fresh, tasty and crispy! Does it beat the fish and chips from the Magpie in Whitby or Papas in Cleethorpes though?!? I'm a curry sauce lady rather than mushy peas. My hubbie like dandelion and burdock eww not for me. I'm not sure if I've ever tried root beer though. You didn't sell it to me Nick lol. cannot comment on the Papas in Cleethorpes but the Papas chain is genuinely regarded as the best fish and chip chain in the UK with several of their stores frequently winning awards. i imagine the Papas experience to be a very consistently almost perfect fish and chip experience. hands down beats the Magpie though, ive eaten their several times, we are yet once to get fresh chips made to order. they deal in such large numbers that they sadly cannot deliver a great experience. the chips are cooked in massive bulk WAY in advance of the order. the fish from their will be spot on as is their professionalism and branding. want a good chip? go elsewhere. Mr Chips when in Whitby. we definitely got a good case of the squeaky teeth after that root beer! once Jill pinpointed the taste to Deep Heat that was it, not a chance I could have another sip! in the weeks that have followed she has put Deep Heat on her aching muscles and chased me around the apartment making me relive the Root Beer experience! its not a taste i will soon forget! if its not D&B with fish and chips it has to be a cup of tea. although Alessa from POP has reminded me that American Cream Soda is also a good pairing! i can’t really recommend Hornsea unless you really want to put Whiteheads through their paces. they do serve up great fish and chips… ♥️🇮🇹

@@earsandideas7266 they do great fish don’t they? They still come overall top of all time on the same national survey. They have a winner for each year in the restaurant and takeaway divisions, this year was Whiteheads for take away. The overall suggested go to has been Magpies for several years. For me its the 192 in Bridlington they won the takeaway award back in 2017 i think, but ive never had better fish and chips than theirs. I visit at least once or twice a year and they have never let us down!
I'm with you guys, root beer tastes like medicine. But what the hell is Dandelion and Burdock? Burdock is a root vegetable used in Japanese cooking, and dandelions are a weed. We read a book about foraging for food and they recommended a salad made from dandelions. So we went and picked some and it was crap. Give me kale any day of the week. So I can't imagine a dandelion and burdock drink. It may give root beer a run for its money in the undrinkable stakes. The fish and chips looked alright though. Probably go well with a couple of battered prawns and some calamari and some seafood or tartare sauce. I was thinking I should do a video with fish and chips and then I remembered I've shot a couple over the last couple of years but I am so far behind in editing I haven't got to them yet. Might have to do them a historical videos - getting fish and chips back in the day. Loved this one though.

Oh Shane I had to laugh about your dandelion experience. Made me research a bit. I've often come across the comparison with Rocket and Dandelion. Found this: Is * Rocket the same as dandelion leaves? Rocket is like fine dandelion or radish leaves. Rocket originates in northern Europe. In the US it's known as arugula. The flavor is strong, bitter and nutty, with an element of pepperiness that can sometimes be quite strong. Looking forward to your historical 🤣 videos. 🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿

It might be an acquired taste. There used to be A&W drive in hamburger joints all over the US and it was kind of like the old car hop thing where they would bring the food out to you on a tray at your car. We used to go all of the time when we were kids. It can't say that I have smelt tiger balm rub, but now I guess I know what it smells like! 🤣🤣@@GENerationXplorers
