Spotted myself in the video in the grey jumper sitting behind you by the window haha! Had almost the exact same meal as you and as expected it was unreal. Home made tartar sauce was brilliant. It's not uncommon to find ice cream counters in chippies over here - the ice cream is usually brilliant!
It's obvious the owners are proud and willing to put in the good work. God bless them and you do a great job at making me feel like I was there for a hot second. This is now on my bucket list.
My boyfriend and I just left this place after your recommendation. We loved it! The lady said that the table we were sat at was the same table you sat in. She remembered you!
Last time I went to Anstruther, there was a long queue in front of this place. Unlike some of the "award wining" chippies where employees tend to develop an "attitude", Anstruther Fish bar seemed quite decent in terms of staff education. In Scotland bread whether toasted or not inevitably comes with fish & chips in the name of "Fish Tea", to fill stomach with smaller amount of fish, in the same way as Yorkshire Pudding does to save the amount of roast beef in Sunday Roast. Anstruther Fish bar has natural advantage in the freshness of material (you can actually see from your table the trawlers bringing in the haddock for you.) For information, not a few fish & chips shops in Scotland were originally established by the immigrants from Italy, hence excellent ice cream.
very proud to be scottish, so glad you gave the Anstruther chippie 10/10 its looked so yummy might go there over the weekend .next time Lee come up in the summer and taste the ice cream
Lee I've been to both and for me the Anstruther Fish bar is so much better than the wee chippie. I felt at the wee chippie it was all batter with hardly any fish in. Glad you enjoyed it, its my favourite one
We used to go every week for Fish and chips overlooking the sea with a flask of tea. But when they started with this caper in the Tyne Tunnel we haven’t been back since, because they have made it too difficult for people with Parking Discs to get more money out of folks. But yes they were lovely.
Am from England ,west Yorkshire so a area that does great fish n chips ,never had Scottish fish n chips ,but my opinion ,Scotland grow the best potatoes varietys ,and the best haddock and other sea food ,that alot of English fish shops use Scottish produce ,looked really nice Lee🤗
Excellent video - its not even 11am and you’ve made me want a fish supper……… I agree AnstruTHer fish bar is excellent but there are others throughout the UK. I find Murgatroyds near Leeds to be outstanding but also a fish & chip shop up near Aberdeen called Lows Traditional Fish & Chip Shop. Lows is fantastic
That looked fantastic, beautiful bubbly batter, chips looked perfect. They do everything perfectly. I got some amazing steak and haggis pies from a friend who went there. They were off the charts. You really need to get some. Gotta love the Scott's they have nailed so many foods, Even Indian/Chinese curries etc. I really need to go there. Only ever been to Edinburgh. That is definitely 10/10
Thumbs up mate, new to the channel and just subscribed. I always enjoy a good fish and chips review. We got some real nice fish and chips down here in South Wales, never tried Scottish ones though, I have tried lots of English ones over the years. Nice video. Look forward to seeing more. Greetings from Wales 👍
As someone who has visited Anstruther yearly for over 45 years this is the best fish and chips in the UK. The people who continously say the Wee Chippie is best obviously work for them. As I've eaten there numerous times when the Anstruthers queues are too long and they aren't a patch on them. Outstanding East Neuk fresh fish.
Need to head further north to place called Forfar, just north of Dundee and have your self a Forfar Bridie. There are two shops that make them Saddlers and Mclarens and it would be interesting for you to settle a score on which one was better
Those Mushy Peas looked perfect but the Curry Sauce perhaps a shade too dark for my taste. The Fish and Chips looked excellent and the Homemade Tartare Sauce looked superb too. A very solid 9 and check out the video bomber bottom right who couldnt stop looking up at the camera lol.
It also helps that, that Haddock was swimming in the North Sea the morning that it ends up on your plate. Scotlands about the only place where that can happen, even the best fish markets in England the fish needs to be packed in ice for at least a day before it reaches the market. Pittenweem is selling fish that was caught at 4am at 8am for it to be served at 5pm on the same day it was caught.
I have been to both when I looked into both chippies . Neither was Busy in February . I enjoyed The Wee Chippy better . But the view from the Ansthuther Chippy is sublime . Never been in main Season . Theres also a Michelin Star Restaurant in the Area called The Cave . It also specialises in Seafood . I would love to go .
Looked nice mac . You should ask for a large fish lightly battered ..I not to keen on thick crunchy batter ...but each to there own of course .and smothered with lashings of non brewed condiment .fush needs vinegar mmmmmm
Drove all the way to Anstruther last year but it was closed, so went to the wee chippy instead. It was Amazing and the best fish n chips I had tasted. Drove to Anstruther few weeks ago to try the famous fish n chips. Very tasty but the wee chippy actually blows it out the water, hats off to the wee chippy.
Really enjoyed your Scotland roadtrip. I can't help feeling there is a lot more to come. Please do return as soon as poss and explore more, hopefully more scenery shots...dust off the drone maybe?. Thanks for taking us along on the journey thoughly enjoyable. Ps a lot of unfinished business in Ireland of course, fabulous people and country
Thank u Lee..for coming too Scotland so glad u loved the fish and chips .I cheered wen u gave it a 10..very proud u said our fish and chips are best ...from all your scottish fans please come back soon and tour Scotland....ur the best .gerard
Ooh yes Ive had them when visiting from the North West 🇬🇧 my relative's in the beautiful Anstruther...they were yummy 🎉 ty for sharing McM🎉 10/10 from me🎉
In Ålesund, Norway we claim to have the best fish n chips there is. There are three ones - "Brokiosken" fast food at Brosundet, "Stuen" fastfood, and the "Fisketorget" restaurant. Here it is served with mayo or aioli and a slice of lemon. With mashed green peas of course.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Scotland, your fish and chips looked so yummy, shame about the weather ...going to give it a 10.will definitely try this place in the near future only 58miles from where I stay.
We prefer the wee Chippy, probably because you can be served quicker in the summer as all the tourists queue along the road! Both however excellent! When you’re back up in Fife try a battered pizza and a red pudding. Regards. Blair.
Went there yesterday, you are right it's very good, could not fault it on service, quality of fish & chips, cleanliness all were top rate ...but is it as good as Yorkshire? it would be if they used proper dripping rather than the fat they use - and I'm a Lancashire man BTW - I'd certainly recommend the fish bar, however a 9.9 from me.
If you stop in Edinburgh PLEASE try the haddock and chips at The Fish Market, Newhaven, Edinburgh (It has indoor seating). It is a close second to Anstruther.
That all looked lovely. I'm from Yorkshire where all the decent fish and chip shops are. Has to be Haddock for me and cooked in Beef Dripping. I now live in Widnes. I challenge you to come to Widnes to find a decent chippy. I guarantee you won't find one. Absolutely diabolical.
Like most foreign places Angela it is a struggle. I don't understand how they can live on fish and chips, and of course when we're on evangelical work living outside of Yorkshire - it's terrible for us. I did date someone from Nottinghamshire for a bit, but all the chippies are done in veg oil and bland.
Lots of these chippers get endless awards, there are so many competitions that are open for entry, for all sorts of stuff. A bit deceiving if you ask me. Anyway, on my travels around Scotland, some of my favourites in no particular order. 1. The Bay. Stonehaven. 2. Fochabers Fish Bar, Fochabers. 3. The Fish Works, Largs. 4. The Wee Chippy, Anstruther. (You picked the wrong one) 5. The Alyth Fish Bar, Alyth. Notable mention for England. Porthleven Fish Bar.
They did look really nice but why don't they serve on plates when your dining in? Great video. 👍 A question Lee, will you go back to fuel after the problems of charging you car/ lack of mileage? Thanks!
The Duchess of Cornwall enjoyed a quick takeaway from this chippy ,, we tried a good number of fish suppers from different outlets ( Ayr to Inverness ) and the Anstruther Fish Bar we thought was the best. A close second was the West End Cafe in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, I've really enjoyed the clips you have posted, very interesting with simple honest reviews ,, great job !! ,, Delighted that you made it to Anstruther. A bit chilly back in Scotland I hear ,, by the way, why the price difference ? ,, the menu board shows haddock and chips 7.95 ,, you are charged 10.65 ,, tartare sauce ( homemade or not ) should be part and parcel of the price, of course it should be included. Charging 1.30 for tartare sauce is nothing but a cash grab.
As a wee lad my parents rented a B & B in Anster. Knocked about there for 30 years. Even bought a house in a fisherman row behind the main street. That's not the site of the original chip shop. Was a ways to the left. Only carry out. Be honest I could not be bothered with the long queues. I used the wee chip shop round corner in 2nd road. Red pudding my favorite. I guess the ice cream parlour comes from the shop to the left side which sold ice cream, candies, news papers, etc way back 60 years ago..
tried both and i cant decide......Anstruther or Stonehaven.........i dunno,,,,,its landed in the morning and on your plate in the evening........so fresh and tasty
Well Lee... I have to be honest here... I was going to score the Anstruther Fish Bar 9/10... Simply for the fact that their Chips did look slightly under-cooked to me... However, i can only go on looks.... But you reassured us that they weren't... So i'll revise my score up to a 10/10... Well done Anstruther Fish Bar... Thanks for the review Lee... Cheers mate. 🍺
Great video....now in America ,traditionally our fish and "chips" fries. Comes with awesome hushpuppies and coleslaw. We don't do the mushy peas. But each place to their own liking lol. Also a hot buttered roll. I'm sure mushy peas are nice so I'm not knocking em. Lol. To try american version. Try it like I said lol. Must have tartar sauce and lemon. Malt vinegar or even apple cider vinegar does ok
My mom's family were from the south. My auntie taught me how to make hush puppies. They ought to serve them in the UK. You'll come to looove them & forget the boring fried potatoes.👍😊
That all looked a solid 10 right enough I was salivating looking at it…went to my local chippy last night after your last vlog and the bloody place was closed! You’d put me right in the mood too! It’s a pity you couldn’t stay and compare with the chippy down the road maybe something for the future…👍
I was looking forward to going there last year but our holiday was 3 days before Scotland travel restrictions were lifted, but I plan to go there one day. I've eaten fish and chips in many places around the country including lots in Scotland like one in Peterhead right next on the fish port, the Magpie in Whitby, etc but The best fish & chips I've ever eaten were actually in two different places (=1st) Capplemans in Pickering, N. Yorks, And Holt Fish Bar in Holt, Norfolk. Both places fry in beef dripping 😋, but it still doesn't stop my pescatarian wife (only eats fish, but not meat) from wolfing them down 😏
Had a road trip to Anstruther yesterday and a visit to the Wee Chippy, have to say it was way superior to your serving. Served on plates, pot of tea, bread, mushy peas and home made tartar sauce, the fish would have ate the ones you had! Must be a 12 on the McMaster scale! Gonna try Palms chip shop in March, hopefully a bit warmer!🤯👍
Looks nice Lee. I can only imagine on Cardboard due to covid. I'm still thinking about your breakfast yesterday. If it was not for a Loony running Scotland I would have to pay Levan a visit.
The wee chippy further along the harbour just beats it. Fish in both is amazing but the wee chippy is less rushed and on proper plates! If the fish bar is queued out go along to the wee chippy!
The Wee Chippy just along the road is actually the best 👍🏻😉 I was there yesterday with the sun shining, 5 degrees and it felt like -10 absolutely Baltic 🥶
Looked really great Lee , thought the batter looked a bit soft but you said it was ok 10 from me ... saying that I've just changed to 9.5 because I've looked at the photos of The Wee Chippy and they look fantastic 😋
Been in here couple of years ago. Only thing I didn't enjoy was the white pan loaf bread that was served up. Try further afield and take a flight up to Stornoway . Fish and chip shop called Cameron's near the harbour. Always a queue out the door.
been there many times over the years and their fish is best , I was brought up in a chippy and had 1000,s over the years and Ainster is up with the best of them , went to the wee chippy once and I didn't think it was as good but everyone's taste is different .
Was up there last summer, great fish & chips - definately 10/10. Beautiful part of the world too. Lovely places for F&C in St Andrews just up the coast too. In my opinion fish & chips were better in Scotland, they always seemed to use Haddock rather than Cod as we mostly get in England. Ps a lemon wedge is a must for me.
Locals pronounce it Ainster. Had a great weekend up there and also some good fish n jockeys whips. Excellent gluten free batter also! Fish suppers all round
I haven't been to Anstruther, however I have been to the Seaforth in Ullapool and to the Allan Water Cafe in Bridge of Allan. I know people who have been to Anstruther and to these others and say that the Seaforth and the Allan Water cafe are both better. Unfortunately the Seaforth has changed hands and I have heard bad stories about the new owners running it badly, however the Allan Water cafe I believe is as good as ever and I love it. Your meal in the Anstruther, I would give it a 9.8, purely because I thought the fish was small, compared to the other two I mentioned it was very small. I must make a point of visiting Anstruther to try it though, and the other wee chippy, I am curious!
Thumbs up for the AllanWater Cafe in Bridge of Allan from me too.👍🏻 Honourable mention to Benny T's in Laurieston, Falkirk who would run the AWC close for quality - restaurant better than takeaway tho.😊 Never tried the Anstruther Chip shop - both shops have a good reputation, seems to be down to personal opinion to which is best!?! 🤔🙂
Next time you are in Scotland go to Largs on West Coast, BLUE LAGOON fish and chips best I've ever had in my 73 years even better than in Yorkshire and they take some beating, I can't wait to go back there.
I remember going there years ago with my mum, stepdad and niece. It was queued half way up the street. We eventually got in and they all got the fish and chips and I got a cheeseburger. The reason being, cheeseburgers have 4 legs and say moo. Not in to that sea stuff at all. Anyway, the cheeseburger was average at best. Wasn't that impressed. Reputation wise though, I can only imagine for fish lovers, this is the place to go. You won't get much fresher, that's for sure.
It certainly looked good and although I wasn't able to try it, I reckon you assessed it well. The only reason I would think about marking it down was because for a so called top rated fish and chip restaurant, they could have presented the food on a plate rather than in a box. I think you may have marked other places down on the same grounds. You didn't mention the tea, and to be fair you should have given the ice cream a go - an opportunity missed?
Looked very nice, especially the batter on the Fish. Agree on the Chips, I thought they could have done with a couple of more minutes, but you said they were spot on - 9/10. Nice Vlog, thanks 👏👍🍺
Looks like a sold too. There are several different Scottish tea blend to reflect wonderful soft water. Y favourite is Thompson Punjani. 10 out of ten. Good value too.
Scotland did me proud. I've just read that locals pronounce it as Ainster like as in Spain but I and many other Scots probably pronounce it like you were saying brother or mother. If people I know down south watch this video they would realise why I sometimes get envious of their weather. Often in the summer I've watched the weather reports and our map has been pale yellow but London etc rich orange. And maybe a good 5 or 6 degrees hotter. Like if it was 19c up here it's 24 done there and I think why can't we have some of that.
Pleased you enjoyed your Scotland trip and especially the fish n chips! I love when I get the chance to eat there. Only thing you done wrong, you really needed a wee irn bru to wash it down. Hope you come back up during summer time as plenty of good food to be had.
10/10 for the Anstruther Fish Bar, 3/10 for your pronunciation of Anstruther lol. Great review and coming from the Clyde Cost, I would say Scotland probably has better fish and chips than anywhere in the UK and you should try some of the local chippy shops in Largs next time you're in Scotland.
Looked Amazing ... but I do agree with other comments about it being served on a plate ( not in a box ) ... you've said it yourself in previous Vlogs Lee. However ... it did look Superb 9/10 from me 👍
The Fishmarket at Newhaven, Edinburgh is every bit as good, in my opinion. Also the Bridge of Allan Cafe, a mile from my house is very popular too and does a cracking fish supper. I do enjoy the chippie in Anstruther but it gets far too busy and it’s best off- season. Also, no visit to Scotland is complete without trying our best fish; the Arbroath Smokie!
Let this Scotsman help you out ..Anstruther....is pronounced... Ann-Struth-her....not 'Strooth but..Struth with a soft 'U'. Cheers...always enjoy your vids. ;o)
Looked good, but I prefer one big fat fish fillet as opposed to two thinnish bits. Less batter = healthier and the fish tends to be a softer texture. Lot of hype surrounding that place, a bit like the Magpie in Whitby which I don't rate personally...... Maybe try some of the others when you go back as a comparison.

Hey Natalie, So glad you both enjoyed it. x
If Darren John was there he’d be in the Turkish barbers next door having a Turkish hot towel shave with a splash of Creed for good measure
Class comment Mr Adkins
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I was there in the summer & it’s the best fish & chips I’ve ever had & the place was cued right down the street, great video btw👍
The coastal area of that section of Fife is called the East Neuk. It is absolutely beautiful in the summer.
Anstruther Fish Bar is fantastic, can't be beaten. The queue in the summer is round the corner and away up the wee lane.Glad you loved it Lee.
Try Arbroath
Lee I've been to both and for me the Anstruther Fish bar is so much better than the wee chippie. I felt at the wee chippie it was all batter with hardly any fish in. Glad you enjoyed it, its my favourite one
You would love the waterfront, North Shields fish quay. Many happy memories with my let grandparents when I was younger.
We used to go every week for Fish and chips overlooking the sea with a flask of tea. But when they started with this caper in the Tyne Tunnel we haven’t been back since, because they have made it too difficult for people with Parking Discs to get more money out of folks. But yes they were lovely.

Thank you. 😎

That is definitely 10/10
I'm on the fence about not plating the meal BUT the advantage is that if you can't finish it you can just box it up and take it away with you.
I have been following you for sooo long, through the good and sad times... congratulations on 54.000 foodies, so well deserved 🙌
Thumbs up mate, new to the channel and just subscribed. I always enjoy a good fish and chips review. They looked amazing Lee, as soon as I saw the curry sauce I knew it would be a winner (looked a bit like Irish curry) my favourite 👍😁
That looked amazing
You could tell by the colour of the curry sauce it would be tasty
Nice light batter too

Agree - with my 2 visits we went to the Wee Chippy - a lovely fish supper and tartare sauce.

Its so cool it says on the menu it says how the batter is a top secret recipe - What a great review and I have loved these Scottish videos.
I'm in Cheshire but watching this I wanted to jump in the car and head straight up there! They look delicious!
Ooh yes Ive had them when visiting from the North West 🇬🇧 my relative's in the beautiful Anstruther...they were yummy 🎉 ty for sharing McM🎉 10/10 from me🎉

Don't be silly. Fish and chips. Norway, bet they are small thin frozen chips also. Stick to your meat and potatos.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Scotland, your fish and chips looked so yummy, shame about the weather ...going to give it a 10.will definitely try this place in the near future only 58miles from where I stay.

chippy in GULLANE ( just before North Berwick ) well worth a visit...made myself hungry thinking about that.😁
If it’s the one next to the Co-op I’d avoid it the owner is vile
We’ve got Scottish blend tea bags up here it’s magic brother in law is from Yorkshire and prefers it now haha
Good man now let’s go try the wee hurries tempura prawns then haddock n chips amazing n delicious
Lots of these chippers get endless awards, there are so many competitions that are open for entry, for all sorts of stuff. A bit deceiving if you ask me. Anyway, on my travels around Scotland, some of my favourites in no particular order.

Easy to spot the contrarian when they mention The Wee Chippy 😂
Looked nice....that curry looked more Indian than Chipshop or Chinese! I loved Scotland myself and the people are nice ...
Good vlog Lee
They did look really nice but why don't they serve on plates when your dining in? Great video. 👍 A question Lee, will you go back to fuel after the problems of charging you car/ lack of mileage? Thanks!
Normally they do but due to covid it’s so they can just dispose of all waste etc. I stay not far from anstruther

Great vlog and glad that you enjoyed your time in Scotland loved your fish and chips in Anstruther.
If your ever back up the road MacMaster, it's well worth trying the Allan Water Cafe in Bridge of Allan. The fish and chips there is sensational

It all looked great but I was disappointed that it was not on a plate. Safe journey home
YES, we have Scottish tea!! With brilliant Scottish water!
Where's me plate!! but bang on the food chips & fish looked delish the score of ten with the DJ scoring off the charts big thumbs up from me ☺️☺️☺️
Need to go to Largs next time you’re up mate and try Nardini’s, fish is nice and their ice cream sundae’s are amazing
Looks nice Lee. I can only imagine on Cardboard due to covid. I'm still thinking about your breakfast yesterday. If it was not for a Loony running Scotland I would have to pay Levan a visit.
We have three types of tea for each stage of the day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). They're called in bru, irn Bru and irn bru
The wee chippy further along the harbour just beats it. Fish in both is amazing but the wee chippy is less rushed and on proper plates! If the fish bar is queued out go along to the wee chippy!
come try my local chippy in Arbroath called The Harbour Fish and Chips, was called Peppos before, still great chippy
Little bit offside but my Thai lady makes superb chrispy chips & battered cod after a few trials she got it as I like it .
Come to Pattaya.
I am Scottish and British But you make the best York tea is best but Scottish chipp shop is best in Scotland 🇬🇧🏴
Hi Lee I have been to Anstruther on a couple of occasions but never tried fish and chips but after your review its on my bucket list...cheers
Great review Lee, I’ve only ever tried the wee chippy but I’ll need to try here the next time 👍🏻
It certainly looked good and although I wasn't able to try it, I reckon you assessed it well.
Hi Lee Again another outstanding vlog. By the way . Was it cod or haddock? I don’t think I heard what type of fish, take care
Haddock 👍🏼👍🏼😊
Thanks
Great to sea a fantastic fish supper in Bonnie Scotland that will ALWAYS be BRITISH🏴🇬🇧👍👍
May I agree that this Scottish Fish and Chips are amazing 👍🏻
Well hopefully not always be part of the UK.
That is the best chippy in the UK, brilliant part of Scotland the location as well 👍 St Andrews beautiful as well close to Anstruther
And you know this how ?? You tried every fish shop?
@@ianmcconnell12 cause it’s been voted it smart arse
Looked very nice, especially the batter on the Fish. Agree on the Chips, I thought they could have done with a couple of more minutes, but you said they were spot on - 9/10. Nice Vlog, thanks 👏👍🍺
You Keep cracking on about yorkshire tea . If you could just enlighten me . where in yorkshire do they grow the tea plants
My only criticism is that I would prefer the fish and chips to be served on a proper plate not a cardboard box
Hi just watch video was disapointed at size of the haddock but pleasantly surprized at seeing it wasnt greasy at all .made me hungry .lol
10/10 for the Anstruther Fish Bar, 3/10 for your pronunciation of Anstruther lol. Great review and coming from the Clyde Cost, I would say Scotland probably has better fish and chips than anywhere in the UK and you should try some of the local chippy shops in Largs next time you're in Scotland.
had a fish from there about 6 months ago a tbh it wasn't great it was very dry but I cant imagine the curry sauce making it better.
Looked Amazing ... but I do agree with other comments about it being served on a plate ( not in a box ) ... you've said it yourself in previous Vlogs Lee.
However ... it did look Superb 9/10 from me 👍
Pickled eggs with ready salted crisps. I use to put them in the bag with a sprinkle of vinegar. Oh happy days. Great vlog as always
I agree , it’s a 10. Been there twice . Everything we had was 1st class. The freshest fish, great curry sauce too.
Pickled onions and eggs😀 That takes me back to school days😀
Let this Scotsman help you out ..Anstruther....is pronounced... Ann-Struth-her....not 'Strooth but..Struth with a soft 'U'. Cheers...always enjoy your vids. ;o)
I live in St. Andrews not far away from there good fish and chips here as well
Looked good, but I prefer one big fat fish fillet as opposed to two thinnish bits. Less batter = healthier and the fish tends to be a softer texture. Lot of hype surrounding that place, a bit like the Magpie in Whitby which I don't rate personally...... Maybe try some of the others when you go back as a comparison.
I agree trenches is way better than the magpie
