You're dead right - there is often an implied sneer to the term "entry level". What is more, you will never hear it said if you go into a dealer to look at a so-called "entry level" watch while wearing a 20K+ piece. In that case they will be full of how it is "unbelievably good value at the price-point" and how it makes a great "vacation watch", etc. But if any customer is spending 1000s on an over-priced factory mass-produced item (sorry folks, but that's what Rolex IS, when all is said and done) then they really have no business trying to make that person feel cheap...

    • @MarcSchmitz1979

Well, it is the entry level Rolex. But otherwise a > 5k watch is not entry level at all. Not even in the world of luxury watches. Personally I would call every mechanical watch up to around 3k entry level. This includes most watches of Seiko, several by Union Glashütte and even some by Longines, Nomos or Oris.

I believe an Omega Seamaster is an excellent choice for a starter luxury watch. It doesn't maintain its value compared with Rolex, but you get high end quality resembling if not better than Rolex for almost half the price. My 1st watch was an Omega Planet Ocean which I bought around 8 years ago. I still love wearing it. My 1st Rolex was a Datejust 41 bought 2 years ago (with the 3235 movement and 70 hours reserve) with a black dial, a great watch for formal occasions.

brands aside, omega trumps rolex in quite a lot of ways to be fair. but that's just the way it is, theres so much about marketing and it affects how people who don't care much about watches greatly. when all they want is a good solid watch, they know rolex and they buy them... after so very long, took up quite a bit of market share and subsequently came the good preowned pricing, rolex can ride on that and increase their listed price further.

Before the current Rolex price hike I considered this model and went into the city centre to look at one and try it on for size. The watch came out of the display case and the assistant handed it to me. As soon as I handled it I really just could not get my head around where they got that price tag from. It did not feel cheap just not special and didn’t look or feel better than my Seiko Saab. Fast forward a few hours and I’m looking at a Damasko in another shop and a Grand Seiko was left in a tray from a previous customer. I explained I had never been up close and personal with one before and here is the difference as soon as I handled it it shouted quality, the polish the bracelet the hands everything was way way better than the Rolex OP and what’s more it was around 2/3rds the price.

Back in '97, my first entry level watch for my entry level job as a staff accountant was a Movado. I was enchanted by the utter simplicity of the dial. It was beautiful.
Fast forward to 2014, I got a date just with the rose Roman dial and jubilee bracelet. Just got it serviced recently and looks brand new.
In 2017, I purchased a submariner 114060. This was right before the crazy hype on SS Rolex's
Now I'm setting my sights on either a GMT master II two tone root beer or the Rolex Hulk. The accountant in me says to get the Hulk due to better value retention. My sensible side says to get the root beer. The root beer is so stately looking and the color scheme is pleasing and soothing to the eyes.

It wasn’t my first Rolex as I bought mine 25 years after my first. Well not unless you buy vintage or super cars correctly...similar really... however buy a Citroen versus an Audi or Mercedes and see what they are worth in comparison after 3 years versus the desirability and longevity?...it’s also a question of how much you are prepared to pay versus the cash you lose. Take an example of omega vs. Rolex. A Rolex is twice the price with say -10% loss on a OP that’s -$600 down, versus -30% loss on an omega = that’s -$900 down. However you spent 3k vs shelling out 6k - if you have the cash great, if you’re borrowing, a different story. ...Unless you sell the watch yourself directly, you will lose money. No matter the brand. Are you buying to sell or buying to keep and wear? However Rolex retain/ gain so many buyers due to their value retention and safe bet, overlooking many cool and interesting, possibly better watches based on that rationale. Nobody can afford to lose vast sums. Rolex likes it that way. It’s what keeps them desirable at the top of the sales pile. You can’t say the same about other iconic and better made, more expensive watch companies. You will lose money on most way more expensive watch brands, JLC, Vacheron, etc. That’s why Tudor is growing in popularity (good quality same factory, and as affordable as what Rolex were 10yrs ago) you could buy 2 Tudors for one OP. Anyway I am rambling now but you get the picture.
