I agree it is the perhaps the best Rolex to get... Simple, no date so easy to set, and the stick hands for those whomdon't like the mercedes hands, 39mm is perfect for many people.
Just a mention on the Explorer which has been made practically perfect in its latest guise with the hand length corrected. It’s awesome value. I have the (ubiquitous... yeah yeah) Date Sub and the ability to change the bracelet length on the fly is very practical and something I use a lot. It’s interesting how your wrist expands slightly going from a freezing day into a warm room. The easy link extension on the Explorer is perfectly adequate. You only need to go up and down by a couple of mm in most cases unless you go skiing up a mountain for example or fly to a foreign beach over 30C. I’d say if you are torn over the pep 39 and the Explorer 39 go Explorer every time. It’s not much more cash and you’re getting a much cooler more practical product that will also hold or increase in resale potential over the coming years, especially if it’s a limited run and they discontinue its production for another iteration.
@Lucky Strike not the correct meaning. Entry level means as a starting point. This could be due to its simplicity but more importantly its availability new from an AD.
Send it in for service, or take it to a reputable master watch maker. If you go to Rolex, put a note in it to not replace the original parts. Like the hands, the face, the "glass",etc.,or you could make an expensive mistake.
Clyve Watch-Wrangler No, they aren't. The best value Rolex is the sky-dweller, because it's the only one(besides the YM2) that isn't replicated well. The OP is on the RWG list of super reps, meaning a fake 400 dollar watch is practically identical to the 5000 dollar real one.
Well, my opinion is that if you want a Rolex, buy a really nice fake superfranken(a term for a watch with some fake parts but also many real parts that is literally indistinguishable from the real thing for ~1/4 of the price), or get a Sky-Dweller.
Thats right guys, it's an amazing piece. Why is it considered less sporty than the Airking or Milgaus? It has a better movement. So why pay more for the other models, for the clasp and dial? Forget it. This is the perfect everyday all around watch. Entry level? Nope. It's a Rolex and its beautifully designed and esthetically pleasing. 39mm is a perfect modern size.

@@rousseau327 yup, the OP is intact THE original Rolex sports watch - hence the name; Oyster case + perpetual rotor = Oyster perpetual, in which every other Rolex model bases its name. So under rated... I actually find the Explorer a bit over rated. So much so I sold my 214270 last month.:D
As you mentioned Rolex got back on track with this one. Would love one of these but can't justify it. My Tudor BB 36mm (Not as prestigous granted) is filling that space at the moment.
Tried on the 34mm OP recently--can't recommend enough. Wears quite large for its size, very similar to a vintage 36mm Datejust. 19mm lug width and larger lugs help quite a bit. Extremely handsome watch, especially in the soft white color.
Your friend is right - that old Air King looks roughly 6 million times better than the new model. The new Oyster Perpetual is a nice addition too - I have relatively small wrists but I still doubt I could pull off a 34mm watch. Rolex's best watches are simple and refined. Two tone datejusts and gold subs are really not my taste and are responsible for the mixed feelings many watch lovers have about Rolex - ie. people will think "does that person love watches or are they just posturing?". If (when, haha) I get a Rolex it will be a vintage Datejust, Explorer 1 or maybe even one of these but I think I'm leaning towards the Explorer. It's subtle which I like. (One gripe - I wouldn't describe Sinn as entry level).
G1234 X the fact is that the Exp1 has a personality of it’s own while this one.. Besides being pretty.. Not that much in my opinion. But it’s personal taste. Have a nice day
My favorite Rolex. "Not messing about" sums it up... Beautiful proportions, form follows function, and a purity of purpose. It's a toss up between the white and black dial, but these are killer pieces.
Thanks for this review. What I like about this is that it is one of the more appropriately "least expensive" new Rolex and it is the perhaps the bare essence of Rolex in the most understated and underrated fashion. I like the fact it is also one of the least mainstream watches so it is actually something different from the mass collected Rolexes. I REALLY like the new monochromatic colors for the 39 OP. I personally would want the white dial version. I'm not sure if I would go 36mm or 39mm. I am leaning towards the 39mm, but would like to see how the 36mm fits and wears on my 6.875" wrist. I can see this being my one and only watch for a long time. I inherited my father's Rolex 6426 and it was his one and only watch basically forever. As such, I really want the new white dial OP, but then again the 6426 is basically the same watch in original 34mm vintage manual wind fashion. So, IDK? Do I need one? Would it be doubling up in the same basic watch design? Damn you! Now I really want one! There's something cool about going after what I would consider to be an underdog in the Rolex catalog. Although having more prestigious backstory and iconism is great, this OP line of watches doesn't need to ride on its own laurels, fame or mainstream popularity to be very nice watch to own. It is a pure Rolex in quality and design that does all a watch really needs to do. Fyi, the only "colorful" version I liked most was the Grey ish rhodium dial version with the light blue pips. Most subtle but the color combination and small highlights were nice and tasteful. I'd still go with one of these newer monochromatic versions, though.
This is my favourite Rolex regardless of price! Mind you I do like the black face with red hour dots! It’s a classic design but the splash of colour just sets it off for me!
This watch makes justifying the purchase of an Explorer so much more difficult. Not that I wouldn’t get an Explorer, it just makes buying an Explorer so much more difficult. What an absolute beauty. Excellent review! You hit it on the nail with your argument.
Got my Rhodium, due to the sunburst effect, it is sometimes silver, black and grey depending on the angle at which light falls on the dial ! It’s watch porn !
WOW I was looking up videos on the OP on UA-cam a few days ago but didn't find good quality videos and I was wishing the main watch UA-camrs like you would make a video on it Thank you Adrian for some how knowing that this is the video I've been looking for!
Such an elegantly simple watch. This is Rolex at its understated best and a really carefully crafted video too. This channel deserves a lot more subscribers!
Amazingly understated but beautiful watch. Very versatile. You cannot go wrong. An instant classic very reminiscent of the Oyster Perpetuals of the 1960s.
I like the OP better than the Explorer and one major reason is I like my crown in white gold (or any other material) at the 12 o'clock position and not a triangle.
I tried on a couple of Aqua Terra’s but as soon as I saw the Oyster Perpetual I went straight in and bought it. It was a cancelled order. Mine is “fun” blue and I love how understated it is. Great accuracy, great quality and finish, no regrets.
It is a great watch, very in tradition with what Rolex was originally-a solid, very well made, understated item, much like pre 1990s Mercedes Benz. That is a watch you could buy and wear for a very long time then pass to your son as his first great watch. In the US in the mid 60s the Lincoln Continental was a very fine car and their ads often had the tag line of "Understated elegance is a Lincoln Continental". I think this Rolex fits that well. Thanks for the vid.
Excellent point about the different bezels (domes vs flat angled) between the OP and the Explorer 1. I never noticed that until you pointed it out, and now I can not unsee it.
Another nice watch that sits under the radar. Looks like a Seiko on the wrist to keep attention away- and I mean that in a good way. Also gives you the 36mm option if that’s your preference.
I've got the black dial version (the one shown in the video, great video BTW), and honestly that's is one of the main reasons I like it so much: doesn't grab unwanted attention and I can wear it to work, yet if you pay a closer look it's a Rolex and a very high quality piece. Love it, what can I say.
Jarrod Lee What are you talking about? Every man? Probably less than 1% of global male population can afford ANY new Swiss watch. Within this 1% you guys are free to afford anything. You are also welcome to help those who were not as fortunate.
From a pure design point-of-view, I think the OP trumps a lot of the other Rolex offerings. It has a similar form to the Datejust but the symmetry it lacks - the same thing that makes the Sub no-date better than the date. I disagree on the coloured hour markers on the pre-existing versions. The bright red and signal green aren’t my thing, but I’m sure they work for other people and personally I think the light blue on the grey works very well. Good video - thanks.
How things change in 3 years. The one constant is that you've always been very upfront about being a Rolex fanboy. That puts you in a unique position of seeing all the good points while being able to admit the bad. I'm on a waitlist for an OP 41 with a yellow dial. I check in every 6 weeks or so, but I know it's going to be a waiting game. Despite being primarily an Omega collector, it's what I want and since it's a want not need... I wait.
The Air King was my first luxury watch purchase in 1998. Twenty years later and a lot of watches bought and sold again I have an Air King. Obviously I am in the camp that likes this watch, I think the the dial design with the numbers and dash of color makes it look great. The Oyster 39 looks like a great watch but the AirKing is not that much more expensive and should be considered for a first Rolex purchase. Really like your videos. relaxed feel to the video and insightful comments and opinions
Have watched this video 3 times in as many days. Looking forward to purchase my first Rolex. Went in loving the Explorer I, but the more I see the OP39 in black the more I love it. The price is the icing on the cake. Thanks for the video!
Agree with you almost 100%, but if we agree that "entry level" is not a synonym for "cheap" (or "poor man's watch"), so it is actually an entry-level watch WITHIN Rolex range. I mean, a Porsche Boxster actually is the entry-level car in Porsche's world. No matter how much money it is still worth. A 6-million-pound yacht it is still an entry-level "boat" if it turns out that that one is the cheapest boat in that super expensive yachts brand's range. Entry-level does not mean "cheap" or "un-expensive", it just means that the first price at the base of that range's pyramid. I know that most of the people give "entry-level" a negative connotation... but it shouldn't work this way. This entry-level Rolex (within their range of watches) is totally not a watch to enter the magic world of watches, because it actually costs a fortune to most of us. So it's not an entry-level watch in general. But it is in Rolex range ('cause it's still the cheapest).
Bought one the other day, and I just can't stop staring at it. Movement is superb, and aesthetics second to none. It's really a great watch. Your video helped me decide to get this, thanks.
The dial is more balanced than the Exp1. Instead of triangle + crown logo + Rolex at 12 o'clock, it *uses* the 5-point crown *as* the 12 marker, then matches 2 lines of text above, 2 lines below the handset. Wish it had the easy-link clasp, then it would totally rock.
When I retired, I received a package, a gift from my brother. It was. Oyster Perpetual. I wear it every day. I love it. I don’t want to wear any other watches.
I own the rhodium dial OP and feel it has something extra compared to these. Yes it may be because I am younger (which is clearly the target audience), but having handled the new OPs in black and white, I found them to be a bit lackluster compared to mine. It may just be the sunburst on my dial but great watch!
Credit where credit is due, and I think that even though this video is almost 15 minutes long, you managed to keep it interesting and fast paced. I see some watch channels making videos that could be cut a lot shorter due to rambling about uninteresting things. Not to name drop but *cough* the urban gentry *cough*
Thank you very much for a great review, the OP is a nice classic watch and I like the black dial. One important point to be aware of, if you purchase a watch or Rolex Tax Free at the UK Airport when flying outside the EU (would be TAX free price), you would need to declare the watch and pay back the 20% TAX when returning back to the UK, so this means no TAX free savings.
Brand new subscriber. I have to agree with you Adrian. It's a Rolex! I think it's absolutely beautiful. I've only been collecting for three weeks now and have eleven watches so far. As a regular working guy (I'm an electrician) I'm not in a position yet to buy a really nice watch.... yet. I just got my Seiko SNLK23 and love it but it is one of my dream watches to one day own a Datejust Rolex or possibly one of these Oyster Perpetuals. Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed it.
Hey buddy, thanks so much for subscribing and I’m so glad you liked the video. Good work with the Seiko, I have 2 very similar 👍🏻 This OP has made my love rolex again. They annoyed me with their sports models being too luxury, but this OP is awesome.
I know I am not a big fan of the Rolex explorer 369, I know you love it, but I do really like this. Not the obligatory diver but beautiful on stainless steel. You are right the different colors they tried to add also ruin those for me , but your buddy hit the jackpot with this one for me, as it is a great watch!
Hi just got my first Rolex, went with rhodium grey in the end after trying on black and blue variants. Anyway it was loose when trying on 3 times in different ADs. now got one from Chrono24 sold as new but there are no spare links and it is a bit tight on the wrist. How many links should I have I count 12 and that’s everything connected to the strap? Thoughts please
Better than the day date for the symmetry and no cyst on the glass. It's a work of art Orchams razor. Everything is stripped and leaves the important things
Nice, but I think the Explorer is a better value proposition. Try and get some face time with Bremont - they're opening a new store in CW and I'd like to see the Supermarine
Example of the word "Oxymoron" = Affordable Rolex :) I was looking for a review on a Black dial 114300 model. A channel called JazTime small demonstration/review videos on all of the dial variants of this watch. Another one called "Bear Cooney Watches" has a brilliant review on the white version. This is a beautiful watch. The white indices on the black dial provide much more visibility than on the white dial. This is a perfect example to mention on forum threads with topics such as "If you could have only one watch". A timeless classic design (without any stupid colours).
I spent a long time looking at and trying on the OP, Explorer 1 and DJ. In the end I had to go for the 214270, the mercedes hands and adjustable clasp really make it along with the 3,6,9 fully lumed numerals - it's killer! I love it more than the 114060.
The OP is a great watch for someone that wants a great all around watch. It's the perfect one watch collection. Personally, I'd happily pony up the extra cash for the Explorer. Great video as always.
Great video I have been thinking about this or the white version but I also love the air king. I know it doesn’t have the 5mm extension but Does the clasp have the 3 micro adjustment inside.
I agree with you. There are no "affordable" or "entry level" Rolexes. There are models that are less blingy but thats not the same thing. I have a Tudor North Flag and many people call it the "poor man's Rolex" I couldn't disagree more. Made as well as a Rolex by any reasonable definition and although they share "DNA" with Rolex, they have their own unique thing going on. Just my few thoughts cool video.
I definitely agree, a 5400€ watch can never be seen as an “entry” thing. Many of us are watch enthusiasts, but perspective must never be lost. Great review, great channel, with a simple an authentic philosophy, about pure essence of watch making.
I have the blue face. It was between the blue and black face. I love the blue which works well with the steel..I wish it had batons at everyday 10 like the black face.
I tried on today the new date just 41 Wimbledon, astonishing model! But surprisingly it had the same "cheap" bracelet clasp as this oyster perpetual in this video, however the price tag was 11k euro
“This is more expensive than a Speedmaster - that’s not an entry-level watch...!” Brilliant. I love my Omegas as well, and you’re absolutely spot on with this analogy. Keep the great content coming, sir.
I went into my AD today. Was quoted a year wait list for a black dial 39mm, assuming I paid a £500 deposit today. I look in their window a lot, seen Explorer 1 in there twice, seen Tudor GMT twice, never seen a 39mm black dial OP
OP stanley steel 904L Same case and calibre 3132 like explorer 39mm . But is calling entry level? I believe soon the price will increase and will be difficult to fine in black or white color around the word .
Do you know if the 34mm in white or black dial is ‘in stock’ at any AD’s in london? I am not from London and would like to be able to purchase this watch directly when in London without being put on a waitlist. Hopefully you know more??😬 thanks
Hi Adrian, today i have been on the hunt for the explorer 1. Actually I noticed really fast, that here in Germany every authorised Dealer has one, and the “hunt” wasn’t actually one! So if you’ve ever have problems with getting a Rolex which is popular in England, try Germany
Adrian, I was saving for a Tudor bb58 but also love the look of the Oyster Perpetual white dial. I would probably go for the 36mm. I am looking for something that can be worn everyday and although I love the 58 I’m not sure of the longevity of the anodised bezel (picking up scratches) I’m only a few hundred pounds short of the oyster perpetual and wondered what your thoughts are? Bb58 or spend a little extra and go for the OP? I ask the question as I know you have reviewed both watches. Nick
What did you end up getting? I’ve had a blue BB58 for over a year now & I love it. I’ve been looking at OPs lately though, wondering if I should have waited & saved for one!
@@chriscon8463 got the BB58 but then ended up trading it in for a Datejust 36 silver dial. Recently got a call on the new Explorer 40mm so that’s the one I own currently. Explorer 40 is a cracking watch though but then again so is the OP…
@@nickharker6299 Thanks! Very nice selections. That Datejust 36 sounds like a nice watch! I think if my BB58 had a date window at 6 o’clock it would be close to perfect for me.
Oh, I 100% agree. I don’t like the new AirKing as much either. I don’t like the green, the face, I don’t like the increased size. I have an AirKing 14010 AirKing (similar to the older AK you showed at about 1:50 but I have the Machined bezel) and the oyster perpetual is a great watch and has a very similar look. Although I still like the machined bezel. And yo can even bump up to an OP date just for not much more. About $6500. All great watches.

That's what you could call understated quality.
This watch makes justifying the purchase of an Explorer so much more difficult. Not that I wouldn’t get an Explorer, it just makes buying an Explorer so much more difficult. What an absolute beauty. Excellent review! You hit it on the nail with your argument.
The oyster has more dress appeal.
I agree that the Oyster is a bit more dressy. Would look very nice if you are wearing a suit.
Great video Adrian! And congrats on 15k
I would have had a hard time to decide between the new black OP and my rhodium dial OP. Perfect every day watch.
Claus-L. Müller rhodium is better more to give than the plain black
Got my Rhodium, due to the sunburst effect, it is sometimes silver, black and grey depending on the angle at which light falls on the dial ! It’s watch porn !
I think they should put bright pink pips around the dial.
Give it some flair.
WOW I was looking up videos on the OP on UA-cam a few days ago but didn't find good quality videos and I was wishing the main watch UA-camrs like you would make a video on it
Thank you Adrian for some how knowing that this is the video I've been looking for!
Such an elegantly simple watch. This is Rolex at its understated best and a really carefully crafted video too. This channel deserves a lot more subscribers!
I have a "old" Rolex 1501 OPD from 1972 with a solid oyster bracelet and an engine turned bezel. I am really happy with that one.
Just bought a 36mm silver face.. my first ever Rolex.. I'm so happy with it! Cant believe iv actually got one. Worked hard for it!
good for you
I live in Berlin ... Actually the Explorer 39mm is in all the display cases, but the black Oyster Perpetual 39mm is hard to find, sold out everywhere.
Amazingly understated but beautiful watch. Very versatile. You cannot go wrong. An instant classic very reminiscent of the Oyster Perpetuals of the 1960s.
I agree. I think Rolex has executed this one perfectly.
Agreed. It’s like saying entry level Bentley or Rolls Royce. No such thing.
Ehh, more like entry level Audi or Benz... Bentley or RR in the watch world is Patek and VC.
Nah rolex is more like bmw . Almost everyone can afford an entry level one . Patek is rolls royce .
I have the entry level Rolls Royce !!!
I ve got mine. Pretty happy with it. But when i can afford again, will consider upgrade to datejust 41
Why not just buy a Seiko?
@@eyeeyeoh because if you can afford one every man needs a Rolex at least once in their life
Jarrod Lee What are you talking about? Every man? Probably less than 1% of global male population can afford ANY new Swiss watch. Within this 1% you guys are free to afford anything. You are also welcome to help those who were not as fortunate.
@@eyeeyeoh I can and im not rich. Baker by trade could pay cash tomorrow. Am 43 and single though
I wait.
Thanks for watching Tom. And I’m completely with you in the thought of “it’s a want” so I can wait. 👍🏻
I may pick this up as my second Rolex. Its simple and not over the top. I can casually wear this everyday.
The domed bezel looks really good on top of the sharp edged case & links. Great contrast
I've just bought an OP39, Rhodium dial.
Love this watch! Saving up my money - I really like the white dial version of this OP.
No date... Love it... Plein and simple...
I agree, the rhodium sunburst is gorgeous - and I like the gleam of the non-lumed hour markers!
The blue one hooked me.
Black and white seem a
Bit staid.
I'm happy to see your chanel growing !
Thanks buddy.
Nice piece! Does it have micro adjustments in the clasp?
Credit where credit is due, and I think that even though this video is almost 15 minutes long, you managed to keep it interesting and fast paced. I see some watch channels making videos that could be cut a lot shorter due to rambling about uninteresting things. Not to name drop but *cough* the urban gentry *cough*
Yeah half the time that dudes talking a load of absolute shite about random movies
Good work with the Seiko, I have 2 very similar 👍🏻
This OP has made my love rolex again.
It's a work of art
Orchams razor. Everything is stripped and leaves the important things
Nice review however, why not opt for the 36mm OP with 3,6,9 dial? It's cheaper than the 39mm OP and looks nicer with the 3,6,9 Arabic numerals!
I love this watch and it's on my list of must have. I love how simplistic, and clean it is.
Last week I got one, it's full of quality. If you don't own one, you will never know what is Rolex.
nice video. its the best looking Rolex in my opinion. i have the Blue faced one and admire it every time i look at it.
Nice, but I think the Explorer is a better value proposition. Try and get some face time with Bremont - they're opening a new store in CW and I'd like to see the Supermarine
So true about the neon pips on the first 39s! If the rhodium dial didn’t have the bright blue pips it would probably be my one and only watch.
Example of the word "Oxymoron" = Affordable Rolex :)
I was looking for a review on a Black dial 114300 model.
I love it more than the 114060.
nice video! which one would you choose, OP white dial or explorer1?? thanks
Thanks for your reply - I was referring to the OP in my question.
The integration between the end links of the bracelet and the case look really precisely machined.
Hi, are the 14000M Air and the 114300 of similar value relative to the year produced? Thank you!
I tried on today the new date just 41 Wimbledon, astonishing model! But surprisingly it had the same "cheap" bracelet clasp as this oyster perpetual in this video, however the price tag was 11k euro
Fantastic watch, love this one with the white dial
“This is more expensive than a Speedmaster - that’s not an entry-level watch...!”
Brilliant.
I love my Omegas as well, and you’re absolutely spot on with this analogy. Keep the great content coming, sir.
love the simplicity of this watch
Thank you so much for making this video. I have actually purchased the same watch and just took it home today. Absolutely in love with it.
Congrats Joe. It’s an awesome watch. 👍🏻
Watch goal for me this one, another step up the ladder, just a matter of time.
I went into my AD today. Was quoted a year wait list for a black dial 39mm, assuming I paid a £500 deposit today.
I look in their window a lot, seen Explorer 1 in there twice, seen Tudor GMT twice, never seen a 39mm black dial OP
Agree with all your points. Beautiful, understated...will last a lifetime. Maybe 'attainable' is a better term than affordable.
I recently bought the olive green 34mm Oyster Perpetual, it's awesome. Understated and classy but still undeniably Rolex.
OP stanley steel 904L Same case and calibre 3132 like explorer 39mm . But is calling entry level? I believe soon the price will increase and will be difficult to fine in black or white color around the word .
Thank you good sir for being bluntly honest.
Thanks Michael. 👍🏻
Last saturday i purchased with the white dial. A beauty. Very rare still at this point i believe

I am looking for something that can be worn everyday and although I love the 58 I’m not sure of the longevity of the anodised bezel (picking up scratches)
I’m only a few hundred pounds short of the oyster perpetual and wondered what your thoughts are?
@@chriscon8463 enjoy, the 58 is a cracking watch.
50next year and up for new watch. cant decide between used explorer 36mm or new Op. Thoughts?
Oh, I 100% agree. I don’t like the new AirKing as much either. I don’t like the green, the face, I don’t like the increased size. I have an AirKing 14010 AirKing (similar to the older AK you showed at about 1:50 but I have the Machined bezel) and the oyster perpetual is a great watch and has a very similar look. Although I still like the machined bezel. And yo can even bump up to an OP date just for not much more. About $6500. All great watches.
The airking is a perfect sports watch if you want to have an easy read dial.
Love it. Does what it's suppose to do: tell time. Like that dial too.
