I wore wigs for 7 months to work during the day and I was fine. I also did twists over my locs twice over the summer and my hair is flourishing fine. It just depends on how you take care of your hair and how long you leave it in for . Also the tightness of them. Good luck to your sister though.
Same here. For the first year I also wore wigs and twists amd my locs are floruishing. But just make sure not to keep then in too long and to not sacrifice the health of your locs for a "cute style" . I take my wigs off every night to let my hair breathe and I didn't keep the twists in longer than 3 weeks to a month. I think twists are fine and loose, but box braids are a bit tighter so I can see why her locs got damaged. Just do them at your own risk basically. Everything isn't for everyone
I know this comment is 5 months old lol. But I am currently wearing wigs at work and let my hair do it's thing when I am home. I want to do havana twist over them in about a month. But I think box braids may be a no no.
Yeah I wear wigs over mine as well. I was nervous about getting jumbo twist over them because I’m gonna need to add locs together . Wondering how long I can leave them in before my hair underneath fused together ...
It was nothing but the LORD! I didn't even click this video I was looking for protective styling tutorial and God intercepted like a damn football and said let Vo talk to ya!!! Thank you! My locs are 6 months and they're so thick, I combined a few and have around 68-70 something! I love me some thick locs Let me keep it moving lol! Great job Vo!! Your local look so beautiful!!
Meek Meek 😂😂😂 so glad the lord brought you over to my channel!! And same girl I loveee thic locs! We have the same amount! And thanks boo! Good luck on your journey!!
After 8 months I had to comb out my starter locs before it got too Thin for that same reason ... now I enjoy my fro for a year .. I can’t wait to start over with my loc journey
Honestly I just started my locs earlier this year in April so I’m on my 9th month.I just got my first retwist a couple weeks ago. I wore protective styles over my locs Up until I got my retwist. I had my mom do twists and I put faux locs over them just by wrapping the hair and I did that a few times and then I did long faux locs and then I did a curly crochet and honestly my locs are fine. They are thick and they look healthy. I didn’t do braids though. Maybe me doing my own hair has helped me monitor what’s going on with it and making sure it’s healthy. All my styles were pretty lightweight.
I think she just used the styles too much. Protective styles are misleading because people think you can just put them in and ignore your hair. You still have to take care of the hair under and just like anything in life, too much is bad for you. So I think that it was the multiple box braids and crochet styles that did it. If she would have done it in moderation I think she would have been fine. I don't want to sit here and say that just because protective styling for me worked out then it should for everyone. Because I do understand that everyones hair is different. But she should have done the style, kept it in for a little while then taken it out and given her hair a good rest before putting in the next style. Also idk how long her styles were in for but keeping then in too long can also be damaging. Don't think its fair to just blame protective styling
I agree there’s a less damaging way to use protective styling but ultimately for the loc forming process I think it does more harm than good. But I’ve already lectured her for not listening to me lol
It’s crazy because my locs are a year and nine months old and when I was a loose natural I loved box braids and other protective styles my hair was never out and that didn’t change once I loc’ed up my hair😂the entire first like year and six months my locs were up in protective styles for two and three months at a time and they formed just fine they’re still thick and my roots are so thick that some days I don’t even want to deal with it lol do you think people with naturally thicker hair can kind of get away with doing more protective styles on locs and it not harm the way the hair develops? Or when it comes to locs of any hair type it’s best not to do protective styles constantly?
I wore crochet "nu locs" over my starter loc for a year. I'm on year 5 now of being loc'd and my locs are good. I do interlock so IDK if that has something to do with it...
Diedra Underwood that’s what I had decided. I didn’t want to hinder the process at all and I want my locs to get as thick as possible lol 🤞🏾. And yessss Good luck on your journey girl! ✨
I’m 4 almost 5 years locd and I do protective styles. Maybe one or two a year. It depends on how I feel. I have sister locs and they’re perfectly fine. I think you sold give it a try!!!!
If you know your hair and know what your hair can take then you should be fine. I don't think passion twists are any different from actually twisting the locs so idt that there should be damage unless they were done super tight and were not maintained. As long as you take care of the hair under you should be fine. There are people that put in protective styles and just ignore their hair for weeks then wonder why their hair is damaged after they take the styles down then end up blaming the damage on the actual style itself. When in reality it was their own neglect that caused the damage. I don't think that people should just turn their backs on protective styling their locs. Just do so at your own risk
It’s not only about damaging the hair, it’s about altering the way the locs form and shed hair can’t properly distribute itself throughout the shaft if it’s compacted in a protective style. That was the issue my sister had, her locs didn’t thicken properly due to protective styling.
Rain on my parade why dont you :( looolz...Was just about to put in some box braids or twists but i will refrain...however, I am 7 and half months in and I cant take my hair...its not even how it looks its the shrikage and i hate short hair on myself aaaarrrrghhh - help....anyone?! lol
Exactly what I thought. Honestly u shouldn't put braids over any kind of hair. It literally tears your hair even if u oil it wrap it up. Just be your natural self and your hair will grow. Extensions put a lot of tension on your hair
Maybe whoever started her Locs didn’t really know what they were doing. That’s what it looks like. She has too many Locs for the texture and density of her hair. The faux Locs didn’t create that damage, boo. Jussayin

And how often you do it! 5 protective styles over a 15 month time frame sounds like alot.
I know this comment is 5 months old lol. But I am currently wearing wigs at work and let my hair do it's thing when I am home. I want to do havana twist over them in about a month. But I think box braids may be a no no.
Wigs are fine, but crotchet hair over locs & 5 protective styles is going to alter your locs regardless
Yeah I wear wigs over mine as well. I was nervous about getting jumbo twist over them because I’m gonna need to add locs together . Wondering how long I can leave them in before my hair underneath fused together ...

After 8 months I had to comb out my starter locs before it got too Thin for that same reason ... now I enjoy my fro for a year .. I can’t wait to start over with my loc journey
I was so happy to learn that you could crochet over your locs just for a little more versatility but was scared of damage my locs. Thanks for sharing!

Yes this is just with starter locs you shouldn’t do this . But if your hair is locked it’s ok , I do it and my hair is loced .

I'm 13months locd, do you think its too soon to get braids over them?
Let me go take these passion twists out I’ve had them for about 3 weeks now I’m scared 😱
girllll you playing with fire! lol

That’s exactly what it looks like
So by protective styles does that include wigs?
Miss Louie Lynn anything that keeps your locs compressed for long periods of time.
Very nice, looks a lot healthier now😊 can’t wait to see how it’s coming along for her🥰
Carolyn Bryant she literally just chopped them off to start over lol
♥️
She should just start over.
knewknots she should but she’d rather not so this is the alternative she chose
I wouldn't have fix it she'd be on her own because you told her not to put that mess in her hair, and she kept doing it her bad for not listening.
