If you're looking to buy a router to install DD-WRT on, I highly recommend the Netgear Nighthawk R7000. It's not too expensive on eBay and I picked one up recently, so I can vouch for its amazing performance.

Genuine tip: if your frames are suffering in tf2, delete your maps downloads folder. I had so many trash orange maps and stuff in there, i cleaned it out and my fps went up by 10! Just thought id share for anyone who sees this. Edit: also your voice in videos sounds a lot more confident now

Cloudflare has several datacenters across the globe, so using 1.1.1.1 will connect you to the closest one. You can go to 1.1.1.1/help to see which datacenter is in use.
If your router has a good enough processor you should be able to push it to 95-97% of your normal speed. Yes this does reduce your overall speed but it'll trade it for more stability. Plus people today seem perfectly happy with using for VPNs that also reduce your max speed and even pay for them. QoS is 100% free so it should be a no brainer. Expect if you like to annoy other people in your house by maxing out the connection while they're playing. In that case keep it off. P.S.: Some ISPs use DNS poisoning to block certain sites (think of DNS like a giant phonebook for the internet. DNS poisoning means redacting certain numbers). Using a custom DNS lets you browse the uncensored internet. Although for some reason certain sites block 1.1.1.1's DNS so if by using that DNS you suddenly find some sites (most notably archive.is) stop working try Google's DNS instead. But do keep in mind google keep logs if you use their DNS so it could be a privacy issue.

this is a good video. i can't stress enough... do NOT do this to your router unless you're willing to run the risk of "bricking" your device. the only way i can comfortably recommend this "mod" to non-tech people is if your router has a "dual bios" mode. that way, if you fuck up the process, your router will revert to the backup bios. ALSO, your router is basically a mini-computer, complete with it's own ram and cpu. because of that, after you flash your router, your router might do a boot loop (turn off and on a couple of times). this is normal. all it is basically doing is this: your router's new operating system is learning the hardware that it is running on.
