  • Day 7 Mastering 360 Flips in 10 Days was a solid day. Each day learning 360 flips I learn something new. This day I used a 360 Flip trick tip From Nyjah Huston that he did with X Games. In Nyjah's 360 FLip trick tip he mentions practicing 360 flips out of a bank to give you more lift. I noticed that practicing treflips out of a bank forces you to pop the board down vertically quite a bit more for 360 flips and so I decided to practice this way in hopes that popping 360 flips more vertical could help me get a better rotation and land them more consistently.

    You can see the progress no matter what the numbers saying... Sometimes what helps me is to do tricks on a bank to get better at them

    The pop shuvit thing is exactly what clicked for me. I've been trying this trick for well over a year now, luckily I've got it down to getting one in under 10 tries, 5 if I'm lucky. Though, I've studied this trick endlessly, to the point where I have it down to a science.
    You want to scoop the board, yes, but you're pressing the corner of the tail down to the floor, crunching your back toeside wheel, THEN you scoop. If you try and crunch the back wheel while scooping it, it tends to be quite inconsistent, as it usually flips only half a kickflip or primos for me. The scoop is a vertical press downward, then a scoop.
    This is what I believe Yuto did in his tre flip in one of your earlier videos, you noted how his scoop was almost like a pop, it's because he's pressing the tail down, then flicking his ankle forward in order to scoop the tail where it needs to go. And once you press the board down, the area where you need to flick will automatically come up to meet your front foot, allowing an easier time getting that kickflip in there. If the board isn't kickflipping enough, press down harder before you scoop, it'll bring the flick area up faster, making the kickflip easier and easier.
    I've also found that if you instead crunch your back heelside wheel before you go to scoop, the flip just happens easier for some reason, it also sends the board a little higher. I'm guessing it's because the part of the tail you're monkey-toeing to scoop the board is higher off of the ground, allowing you to put more energy into the scoop. Looser trucks help with this, though having them too loose just makes the board feel unstable and harder to keep your balance.
    Lastly, my biggest problem. Keeping your shoulders straight is a problem I struggle with on tre flips constantly, as I turn 90 degrees frontside and tend to slip out or have to tic tac in order to stay on the board. What I've come up with to fix it, as you said in your video, is to think of the jump, the shoulders, the leaning, the same as a pop shuvit. Many times before the attempt where I actually land a tre flip, I think of it as "It's the same jump as a pop shuvit, you're just flipping a tre flip instead." The jump for a pop shuvit, at least for me, is floatier and gives more air time, allowing you to spot the flip of the tre flip and catch it easier, with also keeping your shoulders straight and your jump directly vertical instead of to the side. Though, I find that as I get more comfortable with committing to tre flips, I tend to naturally keep my shoulders in line with the board on my own, I think turning them in the first place is either from fear of not landing it, or from a lack of scoop.
    Oh, last thing, if you want that effortless tre flip the pros have, instead of putting all of your weight and power into it like the board weighs 80 pounds, you build pressure on the tail by dispersing your weight between each of your feet. You sort of want to have a spring-loaded tension as you set up, so that the power of the scoop comes from the built-up tension and not just pure leg power. This, combined with the pop shuvit jump and all of that, allows me to get two feet on every tre flip I try, catching them high as long as I bring my feet up. If I just apply the bare minimum, like pressure scooping vertically while jumping like I would for a pop shuvit, it allows me to kind of cheat through the effort of a normal tre flip, saving energy and allowing me to try it for longer.
    TLDR; scoop only after pressing the corner of the tail downwards. Shoulders, jump, and the lean are all the same as a pop shuvit. Build up tension in the tail like a spring before you pop, it allows for a sought-after, effortless tre flip like all the pros have.
    This is what about a year of studying this trick has gotten me, I'm on my way to get this down more consistently. I hope this helps, even just a little. Keep killing it out there!

    Joe-Jo! The third make was the cleanest yet(looked good). that's the way the trick works best for you. You need to stop over thinking the trick and just look at that clean make you made study that and then replicate it to get 10. Over time you will fine tune the trick to improve it. Hope this helps 🙏

    I can see you improved for sure. You’re starting to land them more squared instead of rolling away crooked too much. I think if all you do is focus on keeping your neck and shoulders squared you’ll roll away straight more often than rolling off to the side. Just look at your scooping foot from set up to roll away. You keep looking at your flicking foot which is why you’re opening your shoulders.

    The slight opening of the shoulders has been really helping me recently. It even helped bring slightly more power feels like to have to not expend so much leg energy with popping and more laidback just ankle doing the work. This was a great vid local joe!

    Thanks for the insight. I am getting closer to landing my first 360 flip and am finding the scoop is more of a short 45 degree slice from deep in the pocket by the wheels almost, rather than a J shape. It is like a quick chop then jump. These videos have been most helpful.

    Definitely seeing the improvement man. Your landing a lot more "misses" than before. Just got to get that little extra power to make the board finish its rotation consistently it looks like.

    When u do the scoop/pop think of an extra little scoop at the end of it with ur ankle instead of only using ur leg power so that way u get the full extension

    last two where pretty tidy. Crazy how many different techniques there is for this trick?
    I personally would find out what works best for you?
    Back foot is definitely the key to the trick, finding the sweet spot for yourself is what makes it hard. That and getting the back foot back on is awkward for sure.
    I like to do a ollie before a 360 flip, just to remind myself how to pop and get the back foot up.

    I would make the scoop less straight and towards the back and more towards the front leg and trying to hit the floor, trying to find the pop and make the board move more vertically. I agree with what you said, but when you commit you tend to go back to the old ways. I feel you bro, if I don’t commit it looks damn pretty, but keeping it pretty, vertical and with pop is hard when we commit. You getting there man! Thanks for the cool videos! 😊

    If you don’t want to kick behind you, focus on scooping towards the nose with your ankle only. All you should do with your leg is bend your knee. You can get away with opening your shoulders, but it won’t help you. Ideally, you want to square your shoulders so you don’t turn the trick frontside. Opening your shoulders is better for Tre Noseslides. Sometimes I think I under rotate my Tre Flips, but it’s just because I’m opening my shoulders frontside and the board is turning with me while also doing the tre.

    Your point about the tre flip needing to be more vertical off the bank is very true. That alone makes it a lot harder to tre flip off the bank (at least for me) than on flat.

    like watching your stuff. helps me stay motivated about my own practice. one thing though i noticed in this video in particular.: i don't know if it's just me, but your volume balance is kinda off.. like the camera recorded audio is way quiter, then the post-edit sound effects.. so i can either barely hear you, or jump out of my chair when you get a make. xD

    The other thing to remember, is it doesn’t really matter how you do it as long as it’s rotated and clean. Jovontae Turner has one of the most legendary tre flips of all time and he breaks rules like kicking too far behind him and hunching over with his back a lot. Some people can do whatever they want and it still looks rad. I just can’t do them like that. If I had them as consistent and clean as you I’d be celebrating like a motherf*cker.

    To fix jumping/scooping to the side, try jumping forward and doing the scoop with just ankle movement.

      One thing I think you could experiment with would also be tightening your back truck a bit and seeing if that helps. It makes my pop so much higher on tre flips (and everything else really).
      I skate medium tightness, but the back is always decently tighter than the front.

    Body weight more on the back foot should be 70% 30% and keep your torso straight.

    Also, I know the goal of this series is to land 5 in a row consistently, but it can cause unnecessary pressure, which often causes performance problems. It’s a self created mental block. I bet without the “pressure” and the camera you’ll have more consistency.

    One thing I notice is you have you head leaning over the corner of the board. You want to keep your shoulders parallel with the board and bend your knees and hips and not your back when you crouch for the trick. It will keep the board under you. you already know to scoop your back foot behind you in a like a 1/4 turn motion, getting that part down is next hardest part because it feels unnatural at first.

    Use your scooping foot to push the board forward. It makes the board go more vertical and it smacks your front foot. Also your body weight is still a little too far forward. That's why you're under rotating. I posted another video and around the 3 minute mark, you can see how I'm keeping my back as straight as possible. Keep it up man, I'm up to 4 out of 10 also.

    You’re not putting enough weight on back foot, act like your front foot is weightless right before you pop. You can see when you’re popping you switch weight to your front foot heel side and it eats away the pop to make it spin full rotation. Think of it as a cross pressure of weight on your back foot toe side and front foot toe side when rolling up and just before you pop let it all go to your back leg and it acts as a spring.
