  • During this interview excerpt from December 23, 1989, Eric Carr, KISS's second drummer, offers a candid and humorous glimpse into the making of the iconic 1989 KISS album, Hot in the Shade. Eric opens up about the four KISS musicians fighting in the studio, which he believes is part of their creative process. And with his usual sense of humour, Eric Carr also reveals the identity of the model who served as the inspiration for the HITS album cover.
Eric's humour shines through in the fun interview excerpt as he jokes about the album before getting into the details of writing and recording "Little Caesar."
Hot in the Shade saw KISS return to their hard rock roots after experimenting with a refined rock sound on the previous album, Crazy Nights. Eric Carr, Bruce Kulick, Gene Simmons, and Paul Stanley hit the road in the summer of 1990 for a memorable tour to support the album, which was Eric's last tour and album with KISS.

The best Kiss lineup, with Bruce and Eric Carr.

Wished they put Eyes of Love or Somebody’s Waiting on this album, it’s sad Eric only got one original song to sing on this album.

I like Little Caesar, but I think Eyes of Love is a better song. Eric said the reason Somebody's Waiting wasn't on the album was because they didn't want two ballads.

Can you feel it is really good too. he should have got a producer on his album to get a better sound on it

The album is great but the tour was even better. Not so much the stage show, but rather the amount of songs. The biggest song list at the time.

Ive always liked this album. I know everyone seems to hate it but I don't. Lots of good songs on there, catchy and a fun listen, nevee understood why everyone hated it so much

I totally agree. I've always liked the album, but there are a couple of songs that should not be on any album. I really don't like Read my Body for example. But there are some really catchy tunes on that album. So, it doesn't matter why others don't like. I just enjoy listening to it.

I think most songs are at least reasonable. Hide your heart is brilliant.

I really liked it a lot when it was released and listened to it regularly for about a year and a half, but now, years later, overall, the record doesn't hold up too well, yes there are few songs that stand the test of time, but I don't really consider it to be a classic KISS album.

I always felt like the whole album was personal demo's from each member cobbled together for an album and history has proven that was the case. Amazing tour and probably still the best set list ever- certainly during the non make up years

I was at the Old Orchard Beach show. My first time seeing them live. Little Ceasar and Slaughter opened.

The recording went by so fast because they cobbled together a bunch of demos, polished them up, and slapped it on the record.

    • @ericcarrrevealed

Thankfully the songs on HITS are not as polished as the over-produced Crazy Nights album or the two songs on Smashes.

I heard Pauls Stanley shit on Eric Carr during the hot in the shade tour they weren’t even talking ,Eric imo was going to be replaced before he got sick .

HITS is alright. Stripped down rock and roll. I think they got some fans back with that tour.

I prefer that sound than the production on Crazy Nights.

Eric singing is like 10 times better than most of the singers in the shitty LA bands that were coming out in the last half of the 80´s.

The song aint that peculiar that was in the box sex that came out in 2001 was that song recorded later on?

Good album but a couple of Paul's songs I could have done without. Should have been replaced with songs by Eric instead

    • @chrisoakley5830

Paul would never have allowed that to happen.

From what I understand Eric had a lot of mood swings the last years of his career with kiss. A large part of the problem was his jealousy with other members of the band. He was a funny guy at times but a little bit of an odd personality. He was paranoid quite often too. It sucks how everything had to end. And a lot of people blame Paul and Gene for many things involving his death, but there are many sides to a story and everything points to a lot of it being BS. Just because somebody has passed and you missed them and love what they accomplished don’t automatically take their side, that’s not the way truth works. As far as Eric goes, he was OK, I’ve been a fan since the Love Gun era so my opinion counts. Drum skills, personality, and professionalism without a doubt Eric Singer wins that hands down and is easily the best drummer kiss has ever had.

"Little Ceasar", along with Paul's "Forever", are the only two gods songs on HITS. A total garbage album.
