So every studio musician should get a free house and car and be paid millions? Get real people and understand the business before you let your emotions decide. He didn't write the songs. He was hired as a session player and got paid double scale. This is not unusual. Unfortunately, the average music fan is clueless about the business and thinks people's feelings should dictate how much someone gets paid.
Good comment, I understand that many people might feel that Bob was done wrong, but if it hadn't been him playing on those tracks for Kiss, they would have simply hired another session player. We could debate about the fairness of it, but as you said, it was just the nature of the business. There was a famous session group back in the 60s called The Wrecking Crew that included Glen Campbell, they played on countless classic songs and albums, but garnered no fame from it and probably didn't get rich either.

He could only be mad at himself. There are certain session guys that basically played on everything. Dan Huff, Tim Pierce, Steve Lukather. Most people never even knew they were on the tracks.

I like this guy, but if you agreed to the terms, you did not get ripped off. It's easy to look back after something has quadrupled in sales and say I got ripped off. Maybe should have asked for a point or two on the record, that way you would be seen residuals till this day
To be fair $2.3 million and let’s say you’ve got 20 years of your life left. You ain’t moving to Hawaii on that kind of money. A house alone would be half of that and the rest would be going in two years… 2.3 million would be better spent in Florida on 5 acres in a trailer or maybe a condominium and budget your money
I think Bob knew that he had little time left to live. I think it was a dream to have a vacation in Hawaii. He could rent a modest bungalow and live there a couple of years happily and then maybe go back to Vegas and work.

Yes I think it's correct. In 1999, Ronnie James Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stu Hamm, Gregg Bissonette and Paul Taylor covered the song for the Aerosmith tribute album Not the Same Old Song and Dance. Additional guitars were by the album's producers Bob Kulick and Bruce Bouillet. Bob produced the album.

As great as the Larger than life solo was/is, Ace's Rocket ride solo on that 4th album side said it all. Plus he wrote it, sang it & killed the solo. Ace can't be knocked during those peak years...

If you are a session man, you get paid scale and that is it. Even if you contribute to a tune, create a lead, it makes no difference. Very seldom have players been credited on records, PIR was one of the few that did this, and Gamble and Huff never had to do it, they just did. If the Wrecking Crew members had gotten songwriting credits on tunes they played on, they all would have been billionaires. The absolute worst offender of screwing your players was James Brown. He put his name on everything, alone (except with Bobby Byrd who wouldn't put up with the practice), even if the band completely came up with the groove, the licks and the lines made no difference. Everything was written and produced by James Brown. That was and is the business, if you don't have it in writing and only work with knowledge your get equal part you are screwed.
Bob played great solos on KISS related albums. However, "Rocket Ride" by Ace Frehley is the most played song from side four of KISS Alive II. And, Ace Frehley's solo album is better and sold more than Paul Stanley's solo album. Paul thought he was going to teach Ace a lesson with his solo album and he didn't. Ace had the better producer, Eddie Kramer. And sonically Ace's solo album sounds much better. In spite of Bob's killer guitar on Paul's solo album.
Why did Vinnie Vincent then adore Paul? "He is really, a really extremely kind soul". And: "I love him" (EXPO talks Part I and Part II). Paul knew about his "dark" side and tried to get help at the age of 16. He went to a clinic. I really admire his intelligence. At a Soundcheck last year he even told the audience: when you have depressions ask for professional help. It's not fair to blame Paul for other people's difficulties in their lifes and careers.

Royalties come in different forms. The kind of royalty he could have received from his recorded work with KISS, or any other artist is called a Mechsnical Royalty. This is the same form of royalty performers get when they record a cover tune. Now, whether or not he would actually get paid a mechanical royalty us contingent on having a contract that specifies so. Do you think that Paul and Gene would have signed that contract, if they could get Bob to play for scale only? I suspect the answer is no. Also, Robben Ford and others pinch hit for Ace during that period, and I have never heard any of them complain about only receiving scale without mechanicals.

I have to agree with some other comments. The fact that Bob did not get royalties on his work is his fault. If you really love music, then you have to respect and understand the business side. You can create your own publishing in this country with next to nothing and most people do not realize it. I love music too. I will definitely always have the rights to my own work and my lawyer close by. That is just how the world works.

As a hired gun, what was he supposed to be paid? Not the same as the band members, song writers or producers! A session player, gets scale, confirmed by his own words here. And he said he was paid double scale. If he had written the songs or produced them, maybe he'd have an argument. As for royalties, again he didn't write or publish the material! As for the "End of the Road" since when is it his choice whom would get to be producer? It's the property of KISS and under their control. So every studio musician should get a free house and car and be paid millions? Get real people and understand the business before you let your emotions decide. He didn't write the songs. He was hired as a session player and got paid double scale. This is not unusual. Unfortunately, the average music fan is clueless about the business and thinks people's feelings should dictate how much someone gets paid.
Good comment, I understand that many people might feel that Bob was done wrong, but if it hadn't been him playing on those tracks for Kiss, they would have simply hired another session player. We could debate about the fairness of it, but as you said, it was just the nature of the business. There was a famous session group back in the 60s called The Wrecking Crew that included Glen Campbell, they played on countless classic songs and albums, but garnered no fame from it and probably didn't get rich either.

I looked up the personnel for Bat Out Of Hell and I am not seeing Bob's name. I am a pretty big fan of that record and this is the first time that I am hearing his name associated with it. Was he in the touring band for that tour?
Yes Bob Kulick was a touring guitarist. Bob was primarly on lead/rhythm, his younger brother Bruce was on rhythm/lead. After Bob Kulick passed away, Meat Loaf thanked him for his great work on that tour.

I think Bob knew that he had little time left to live. I think it was a dream to have a vacation in Hawaii. He could rent a modest bungalow and live there a couple of years happily and then maybe go back to Vegas and work.

Yes I think it's correct. In 1999, Ronnie James Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stu Hamm, Gregg Bissonette and Paul Taylor covered the song for the Aerosmith tribute album Not the Same Old Song and Dance. Additional guitars were by the album's producers Bob Kulick and Bruce Bouillet. Bob produced the album.

If you are a session man, you get paid scale and that is it. Even if you contribute to a tune, create a lead, it makes no difference. Very seldom have players been credited on records, PIR was one of the few that did this, and Gamble and Huff never had to do it, they just did. If the Wrecking Crew members had gotten songwriting credits on tunes they played on, they all would have been billionaires. The absolute worst offender of screwing your players was James Brown. He put his name on everything, alone (except with Bobby Byrd who wouldn't put up with the practice), even if the band completely came up with the groove, the licks and the lines made no difference. Everything was written and produced by James Brown. That was and is the business, if you don't have it in writing and only work with knowledge your get equal part you are screwed.
Bob played great solos on KISS related albums. However, "Rocket Ride" by Ace Frehley is the most played song from side four of KISS Alive II. And, Ace Frehley's solo album is better and sold more than Paul Stanley's solo album. Paul thought he was going to teach Ace a lesson with his solo album and he didn't. Ace had the better producer, Eddie Kramer. And sonically Ace's solo album sounds much better. In spite of Bob's killer guitar on Paul's solo album.

The kind of royalty he could have received from his recorded work with KISS, or any other artist is called a Mechsnical Royalty.
This is the same form of royalty performers get when they record a cover tune.
Now, whether or not he would actually get paid a mechanical royalty us contingent on having a contract that specifies so.
Do you think that Paul and Gene would have signed that contract, if they could get Bob to play for scale only? I suspect the answer is no.
Also, Robben Ford and others pinch hit for Ace during that period, and I have never heard any of them complain about only receiving scale without mechanicals.

I have to agree with some other comments. The fact that Bob did not get royalties on his work is his fault. If you really love music, then you have to respect and understand the business side. You can create your own publishing in this country with next to nothing and most people do not realize it. I love music too. I will definitely always have the rights to my own work and my lawyer close by. That is just how the world works.

I think Paul paid Bob very well. $3600 in 1978 is worth about $18000 today. I think Bob wanted to work more with KISS and get more money but Paul and Gene were not interested. That's what made Bob feeling bitter and disrespected. Besides Bob worked successfully as a producer and had his own projects.

When he said his favourite guitarist in KISS was a studio guy, he humiliated not only Ace, he wanted to hurt Bruce. Bob was so bitter and aggressive, that Bruce had to get a restraining order against his own brother.

Meat Loaf needed a touring band to tour the 'Bat out of Hell' album. Bob Kulick got the gig as a touring guitarist. Bob was primarly on lead/rhythm, his younger brother Bruce was on rhythm/lead. It was 1978. After Bob Kulcik passed away, Meat Loaf thanked him for his hard work on that tour to promote the album.
It wasn't all about the money. Bob couldn't get the gig with KISS because Paul and Gene wanted a tall guy with long hair. Bob said that when he got the gig with Paul Stanley in 1989, his brother Bruce said, "What do you do? Are you trying to steal my gig?" And when Gene wanted Bob to play on his solo record, Paul said, "He played on mine! You can't use him on yours." Things like that... That's why Bob felt bitter and disrespected.

As a hired gun, what was he supposed to be paid? Not the same as the band members, song writers or producers! A session player, gets scale, confirmed by his own words here. And he said he was paid double scale. If he had written the songs or produced them, maybe he'd have an argument. As for royalties, again he didn't write or publish the material! He was paid to play in the studio, he did and got paid! Being bitter about unrealistic expectations, is a personal issue. As for the "End of the Road" since when is it his choice whom would get to be producer? It's the property of KISS and under their control. Are Paul and Gene angels, probably not, but what did they actually owe him? Elton John, had someone who was a long term sound man, he rewarded him for always being there. Bob, was an at will employee at best! He was paid when he was employed and not when he wasn't! I loved Bobs' work on the KISS material, but he wasn't really a part of the band. In the end, he was envious of Bruce and even had issues with him. Further proving, it was his issues, no one else to blame. If he wanted more, he should have negotiated better!
If Bob agreed to what he was instructed to play beeing a ghost guitar player with no creds and got payed no matter what the sum was then theres nothing more to it! But if he was cheated thats another matter

In conclusion! About bands in general! The more famous a band gets the harder it gets for bamd members to stay grounded! Both feet on the ground! That is! Its like a kite syndrome flying up there with the wind! Boasted by bad people oh! Youre so great!
