A few years ago, someone was seeking a virtual boy with a rental case and 6 games, one of them being Jack bros and they wanted $450. I offered $300. Can you guess who didn't end up buying it?
My one friend had one as a kid. I saw his brother playing it and said “could I try that” and he just said “you don’t want to”. And that’s the only interaction I’ve ever had with a virtual boy.
@@realzenben Yes. Beforehand at the time, only Shin Megami Tensei I & II were available only to Japan. Anything SMT related to reach America was Jack Bros.
There have been many comments about Scott’s dedication to a simple short gag, but I think getting hit in the face by a frying pan and then doing a perfectly cut scream takes the cake.
I think the fact the Virtual Boy makes a cameo in Luigi's Mansion 3 with the line "It's gonna sell off the shelves fast!" really shows that even Nintendo knew this was a failure
It's also in Smash Ultimate in the "Gamer" stage. Luigi's Mansion 3 was made by a studio in Canada so the sentence found in the game is not by Nintendo themselfs.
Of anyone to know the system was a failure, wouldn’t it be the company who put it out? It’s not like they backed it for 5 years, saw they were losing millions and then were like “what a success!” They stopped putting out games for it in 8 months so obviously 20 years later they know it’s a failure, clearly that’s evident with the Wii U too given all the ports it’s not like some secret knowledge to have lol

It may have been fake but I do recall a reader letter in Nintendo Power where a girl says her parents got her Virtual Boy for her birthday and all I could think is "There are far easier ways to tell your child you never wanted them"
I got it as a present as a kid and liked it fine. The modern day hype against it isn't reality. It was sad it didn't do well, but my family knew I enjoyed it. I remember playing Red Alarm in the car and feeling like I was moving forward in my ship. Fun times.
@@humanthehuman8016 Thanks! It was obvious pretty quickly it wasn't a huge hit, but like getting it as a kid in those pre-internet times, your immediate impression was only what you thought yourself. I remember being blown away by the detailed, 32-bit sprites in Teleroboxer, for example. Way beyond SNES level spritework. Red Alarm seemed *so* futuristic! It seemed to have so much potential, and I kick myself now that I never knew as a kid that Wario Land VB came out, because I would have loved that. It is weird, the internet has the power to rewrite pre-internet history. I'm sure a lot of people hated it, but I bet most of the people who bought one liked what few games they had. It's like, how can they make a robust game library for a system that sold 770,000? And yet the people who *did* buy it weren't responsible for that, so it sucked. Never regretted getting it, just that it flopped so hard that it was put out to pasture. The 3D effect was striking, and I honestly loved and still love the crazy mix of four shades of red and black coupled with a CPU that put the Gameboy to shame: this thing delivered sprites that looked very modern in 1995. I really missed sprites as 3D graphics took over, and seeing what a step up from even SNES, let alone Gameboy, could do in that area was really cool. A missed opportunity. You can tell from the homebrew scene that there's a lot of potential here. I loved the sound, too. The controller was really ahead of its time. Red Alarm had more modern controls than anything else would for years. Wish there were more games, for sure. Would love to have seen what that Mario Land VB would have been like. A sequel to Link's Awakening on this would have ruled! Looking down into a little diorama filled with Hyrule, how cool would that have been? A Metroid would have been great: the bleak aesthetic of a ruined planet would have meshed great with the crimson monochrome screen. I don't mind people slagging it off, I get it, but it wasn't like that when it came out. You could tell it flopped, but it wasn't like "Why did I buy this?!" It was more like "Damn, but I got this because I wanted games for it!"
@@humanthehuman8016 PS how's the Quest 2? We've got a Rift S and seeing how you can link Quest 2 to the computer makes me really want to sell the Rift 2 and get a Quest 2. @@humanthehuman8016 Haha we def have a Wii U too. We understand. Wow, thanks for the first writeup on the Quest 2!
It also appears in Tomodachi Life, with all of the miis saying "ALL HAIL THE VIRTUAL BOY"
Nintendo likes to poke fun at themselves sometimes.
@@tituslafrombois1164 I think it wasn't until Tomodachi Life that Nintendo finally acknowledged that "Yes, VB existed, and yes, it was hilariously bad". Before then, they pretended it didn't exist.
@@tituslafrombois1164, Yea I love giving my miis consoles like the wiiu, and ironically they 3ds. So my miis on my 3ds could be playing with miis on their 3ds that is on my 3ds.

im happy that scott talked about Shin Megami Tensei
I remember having a friend in kindergarten who got the thing for his birthday. Now he wears the thickest pair of glasses I’ve ever seen.
Makes sense, he got the thing that damages your retinas if you're under 7 when he was very under 7. I guess his parents didn't read the big warning on the box
He probably had a net gain from it though, those things are expensive
I've seen this comment under the AVGN's review.
I feel bad for the kids who got their parents to buy this and then never got another game system again because it was such a bad experience
Better resolution, better refresh rate, portable, AND compatible with the desktop Oculus library? It would be great just as a portable, 3D-enabled TV you could watch whenever you wanted haha.
@@humanthehuman8016 Haha we def have a Wii U too. We understand. Wow, thanks for the first writeup on the Quest 2! They just enabled "AirPlay" wifi streaming from a PC, so now if we trade in the Rift S for a Quest 2 we could wirelessly play our library of games anywhere at home: back lawn, even. Really ups the value. I didn't even know they were planning that!
