This song predates World War I, much less the Nazis, and was written when the French started making noises about annexing part of the Rhineland in the 1840s, when there was no unified Germany at the time.

As a leftie I think it's stupid that this song gets taken down so much. It's a good song, it predates the Nazi bastards who tainted its legacy by nearly a century, it's just about self defense and patriotism, not militaristic nationalism or conquest. Thanks for uploading such a good version of it.

WW2 wasn't a defensive war when it came to Germany... neither was WW1. They declared war on France, Belgium and Russia, if they didn't do that, they wouldn't have even been in WW1, and so, would have also prevented WW2.
