The song's origins are rooted in the historical French-German enmity, and it was particularly popular in Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War. They could have. The Prussians and the rest agreed to offer Napoleon the Rhine frontier after the 1813 Battle of Leipzig. If he had simply said 'ok', Antwerp, Brussels, Luxembourg, Cologne and Mainz might have been French cities for two centuries now.

When i was in first grade my teacher told me to stop singing German patriotic songs because i was "polish" but when i got home i asked my dad if we were really poles and he answered me:Your Greatgrandpa didn't die for you to be called a pole.I am proud to be a german from Danzig even tho i dont live in Danzig anymore!

Here’s a fun fact: this tune was used for the Yale University school song (used to this day) that has the refrain “For God, For Country and for Yale”- and when you sing the refrain you have to wave a white handkerchief (don’t ask me why, i have no idea). And in in my day at Yale ((the late 1970s) whenever the classic film “Casablanca” was shown at one of our film societies, during the wonderful scene in Rick’s Cafe when the German soldiers start singing “Wacht am Rhein” and the French in protest start singing the Marseilleise, all us Yalies would stand up and sing our song along with the Germans, waving our white kerchiefs, and then dissolve in ironic laughter. Needless to say we were all stoned.. Ah,happy memories!

Sehr schön. I do not feel ashamed for being quite a Germanophile. I am a Czech myself and as such I have been taught the whole life to hate the Germans (by the history and literature teachers, several statesmen etc.). I have nevertheless preserved some independent thinking in this regard and refused to blame solely the Germans for all the past mishaps on our continent. Other ethnicities have their share of guilt, too. And unlike the Germans they have never apologized or admitted their guilt.. Germans have many admirable traits.

IIRC I've read that someone estimated US foreign policy since 1945 to have cost 20-30 million lives. That's half of the death toll of WWII. The death tolls of Stalin's and Mao's regimes are greater than the death toll of the WWII.
If my numbers are correct, the US government is guilty of a _lot_ of shit, but other regimes have been even worse.

It'll never happen. Most Germans accepted their loss and those lands are ethnically Polish now, with the last German people born here dying off.

As much as we German-lovers hate it, it’s part of history, we should just accept it. Those lands used to belong to Neanderthals for god sake. German crusaders germanized East Prussia, that’s how we got Prussia in the first place. (This thing I can’t remember exactly, please double-check). After all, it doesn’t really matter if those lands are no longer German since genetically speaking y’all don’t really have much difference anyway.

I'm a Dutch, from German Descent, My great grandfather was an officer in the German Army during the First World War came to the Netherlands for better prospects, Funny that my grandfather would fight against the Germans during the Second World War.
Most of my family are liberals now and kinda hippy, For me I continued my families tradition joined the army mechanized infantry as an Sergeant. Listing to it gives me chills through my spine.
Did he fight as a soldier or in the resistance? And how did his fellow Dutchmen think of a German in their ranks? Not to offend anyone in anyway, I am just curious. Here in Belgium I heard similar stories.

He got some decorations and a written letter for his bravery signed by the queen of the Netherlands thanking my grandfather services rendered for the fatherland. After the war he became a bookkeeper. He was also a faith driven men staunch catholic being a pastor at there local church and leader of choir being a pillar of the community and also got a papale recommendation from the pope the for being a pillar of the community.

The French have taken the western bank of the Rhine. It's been theirs since 1945. The reason why Germany is reluctant to take it back is because the EU would have put a decisive halt to that
The 1800s were an incredibly exciting time in German history. Often overlooked and out shadowed by WW1 and WW2 it deserves way more attention. Especially the dynamic between the German states and France, it was a historic thriller of the 1st order. I wish I could live in that time for a month and explore it.

As an American who has German heritage in him. I’m so intrigued in the history of Prussia & the German empire aside from my own country’s history I’m fascinated by German history, culture & songs!
Im filipino, has no german heritage, but is fascinated by the history of Prussia and Germany itself, kinda weird but its what i like learning and what i like. I also like the german culturr and songs

This is honestly probably my favorite German March. I know Königgrätzer and Preußens Gloria will always be the mainstay marches for most, but the passion in the performance of this one is so beautiful to me. You certainly cannot be slouching around listening to this. It makes your back straighten and your eyes water with pride. Thank you Dr. Ludwig for these wonderful posts.

und immer darauf achten, dass die Flagge das Gelbe (die Sonne) unten ist und das Schwarze (die Erde) oben, so dass wir immer weiter symbolisch begraben sind. Und fast keiner hat es gemerkt. So traurig.
Every time I hear this, I can’t help but feel proud of being German. I got called out for using the Iron Cross as a profile picture at school and almost got a mark on my record for it, I still can’t believe that the only thing the Cross symbolizes for people is Nazism.
That's the massive ignorance and also antigerman propaganda since ww1 that never really ended. Just nicely explain to them, that also the modern German army is using it and that it comes from the Napoleonic wars in 1813, where it stood for freedom and bravery against invaders.

Although I am not a German but a Filipino, I will always hold Germany and its past in high regard. Our own national martyr, Jose Rizal, lived in the German Empire particularly in Wilhelmsfeld, Heidelberg and Berlin. In his letters, he had nothing but admiration for the Germans, their customs, their industriousness, and their rise as a nation. He too hoped that Las Islas Filipinas would one day reach the same heights as Germany did.

They didn't have an official anthem and when they were asked to make a national anthem they used Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz and Die Wacht Am Rhein
