Louis Staab composed "No More the Moon Shines on Lorena" in 1889. His song is sometimes confused with Henry Webster's wildly popular "Lorena," published in 1856. The Smyth County Ramblers recorded it in 1928 under the title, "Way Down in Alabama," and the Carter Family did it in 1930 using the original title. In recent years, Jerron Paxton of New York has popularized the song among traditional banjoists.
My instrument is a 2000s Terry Bell minstrel #banjo tuned d♯G♯D♯G♯A♯ (gCGCD dropped four frets).
Way down on the old plantation
Where Master kept me as a slave,
He owned a yellow girl he called Lorena
Who I courted where the wild bananas wave.
CHORUS
No more the moon shines on Lorena
As we'd sit and watch the raccoons climb the corn,
And the possums playing in the wild bananas
With the old owl a'hooting like a horn.
Several years there we courted
We were as happy as one,
Hard work we done for old Master
And the happiness of life had just begun.
One day I went to see Lorena
I thought she'd meet me at the gate,
But they took her away to old Virginia
And left me here to mourn for her fate.
Many long years I hoped to see her
Thoughts of her was ever in my head,
Til one day Master read to me a letter
Telling me Lorena she was dead.

I signed up yesterday. 👍🏻
And the lord said BLESS YOU CHILD
I'm chilling on my back porch with some scrambled eggs, left over grilled chicken, toast and a beer. Watching the grass grow and looking at the woods. Got two more days off before work, and now some good banjo music playing. In a couple months my new wife is going to join me. Damn, life is good.
that's how it's supposed to be
This is a stellar rendition. People are about to be clamoring for that lesson.
Hell even people who already know the song will learn Clifs version! I know I will just so I can mix the one I play and his.
A sad, sad story but, a good song can bring tears to the eyes…
awesome claw hammer going on there, and on a fretless to boot. great vocals as well.
Thanks a lot.
Can’t beat that Boucher sound!
Clifton Hicks is the next Clifton Hicks!I'm not sure what to say but that he's a complete bada** with his own sound and I owe him a ton of money cause I listen to him all the time while I'm working sooo...(hands in pockets, lookin' round whistling at clouds)Top shelf artist with obvious love and knowledge of his craft.A craft that tells us who we are in a deep sense. His videos are proof of his hard work and dedication to preserving an important part of our history.
Thank you Mr. Hicks
Possibly the best singing i've heard from you.
Dang songsmith made me shed a tear.
One word : Magic. Watching this in England & I cannot tell how much pleasure this rendition has given me. The blend of voice & banjo is nigh on perfect. This song has taken a firm hold on me just as 'Rye Whiskey ' did.Cluftob Hicks you are a musical treasure, thank you.
cheers to that
Just watched Jerron play this earlier this morning for the first time. Perfect timing!
Just like clockwork, Senor Hicks.
Your uploads are a part of my Saturday.
💯AWESOME 💯
A marvellous performance of An incredibly upsetting song. The essence of blues - tell your story and hope the audience appreciate the horrors it contains. This story seemed to take its toll of the artist too.
Geat song for this Saturday morning, thank you, and take care
Federal property doesn't exist, JS
Missed your music brother. I've been so dam busy but haven't forgotten you. Keep a strumming
Excellent 👌
Incredible singing and lovely story telling.
When Brian Jones first played a Robert Johnson record for Keith Richards, Keith asked who was playing with him on the second guitar not realizing Johnson was doing it all himself live(on the record).
That’s what Mr. Hicks at his best makes me think of, Misters Johnson, Jones, and Richards.
What a beautiful performance! Thank you, sir.
That was doooooooope
I just received the notification for this video 40 minutes ago.
How did you watch this 2 week's ago?

I can’t reveal the mysteries of time travel on a UA-cam comment sir.
@@baningobarge ha ha 😉

But honestly, I’m on his discord
You sound great here! Killing it on the Bell
Dang Clif, this is just so frickin good.
This is a great song. I learned it listening to Jerron Paxton. Although my rendition isn’t nearly as awesome as his.
Nice stuff, man. And happy, peaceful scenery to boot. ❤️🔥
Really great relaxed delivery of this song. Not hurried or rushed, just comfortably loping along on a nice Saturday morning. Great work Clifton!
The delivery is something. If not for the Bango I'd say the overhand right you never seen coming. Sang like hakuna matata 😂
Damn Clif, your voice and singing just keep getting better. Really nice.
Ironically, just as another person said in their post, I just watched a Jerron Paxton performance of this yesterday.
A timely post on your part.
this is gut wrenching sad sheesh. Clifton for prez
I love this old tune. Your version is less hectic than Jerron's, the pace is better for my playing style I'll be pesting you on discord about this one buddy, Thanks man you're the best.
Jerron Paxton has a wonderful understanding of his instrument. His version isn’t hectic at all. Just more complex.
@@michaelbaker602 I'm not getting at BBP but he does try and pack a lot of notes into a very short period of time...
@@td4dotnet I’d say he not only tries to pack in a lot of notes; I’d say he succeeds. They are more than a few players out there who try to impress their audience with their speed and in the end it just comes across sounding like a runaway train while they’re saying,”look at me, ain’t I talented.” Jerron Paxton isn’t one of these. He’s obviously a master of his instrument
👍Heart-wrenching 😭
This gives me ALL of the peace. I'm going to have to learn this one. Jesus christ on a seesaw, this is stupid fxcking beautiful.
I like to hear you play Red Wing on that if you do requests. Peace, man.
👍👍👍
Just brilliant.
10/10 thank you for this rendition
Hey brother! Been watchin for a while now amd love your banjer pickin. I have a channel an tell ole Appalachian mountain stories and was wonderin if I could have your email.
clifhicks@gmail.com
That was awesome, thanks.
Just watched a young woman named Nora Brown on UA-cam playing “East Virginia”crediting you for teaching her this song. It’s definitely worth a listen. It’s a Ted Talk.
😪😪❤
That was awesome 🙏🤘
Hey clifton. Idk how often you check your comments. But I was wondering if someday you could do a banjo version of "I been all around this world" not the one you did about working for John henry. I think it was originally done by greatful dead? But I really like the way Foghorn Stringband played it. I was born and raised in southwest Virginia smack dab in the valley between the blue ridge mountains and Appalachian mountains. And that song always makes me think of home. I've been working in Michigan for the past 5 years and have only been able to visit a handful of times
What's the name of that type of banjo and strings?
❤️
I see your Reefer-patch back thar
Do you have any advice or resources for learning and practicing that technique? It’s amazing!
I call the "up stroke" or "up picking." It's one of several techniques I teach at BanjoHeritage.com
Great version clifton. Have you ever considered doing a rendition of the classic old tune "Oh Shenandoah" or any of its various names?
Possums and coons get all the attention in old times. What about the squirrel? Are there any old time squirrel tunes?
This is way different than the Lorena I'm familiar with. Still really good!
Hey friend, where can I find a banjo like that one?
wonderful playing! I believe that this song can be traced back to at least 1848 from an unknown black composer, but I only know that from Jerron Paxton's rendition.
Would of never heard this if it wasn't for you
It saddens me that this is not an authentic old slave song like I’d thought haha. But I suppose I’ll learn the words anywho cuz it is swell
You aren't the first to be fooled by old Lou Staab.
That's some technique mister Hicks - your right hand looks like it isn't playing half the notes, but very obviously your left hand is!?Did you overdub or am I an eejit?😂Thank you ✌️🪴🤘
Should have wrote 'Clifton',looks like 'clubfoot 'The keyboard on smartphones can drive you mad
